It was actually the end of March, 2006 that it was announced for Disney Visa cardholders. Keeping our fingers crossed here that it is announced again this year. If not, we're staying offsite in October instead of onsite in September.

Count me in!
I'm going to WDW with my DD in early October for 5 nights for the Race for the Taste 10K. I'm hoping the Free Dining will include the time I'm there. I have a feeling I'll miss it by a few days.
Fingers are crossed!

If I remember correctly the promotion was announced on March 31st of last year because on the Mousesavers website it said something like, "This is no april fools joke, free dining is back!!" So, with that being said, I know that I'm not going to be able to sleep much the last few nights of march thinking and hoping that it may be announced again. Either way, we are going, but it would be nice to get the free dining again!

I talked to a supervisour the other day due to an error in my ressies, and she kept saying "Watch out for the free dining offer" this is not something I am interested in, not sure how it works, but she mentioned paying 35 dollars a day...??? and dine for free??? personally I have not any use for it. I eat eggs for breakfast and a burger for dinner, that is it. so it did not hold my intereast and she said it would not pay for me to do it.
so not sure if it will be "FREE" but looks like a small fee may be needed, like a ticket or something......
sorry to sound confused, never have used this before!
BUT it looks like something IS looming.....

Come on, free dining!! I loved it last year and would gladly go back for it this year. We're going in May and staying offsite. I want to go back again before Feb '08 (when DS turns 3), so free dining in the fall would be perfect for me!

'Free Dining' means 'Free Dining'. When the dining plan is added to a package, it costs approximately $35 per person per day. Therefore, when a package is purchased during the 'Free Dining' offering, you do not pay for the dining portion of the package. We have taken of this offering on two separate occasions, and it saved us huge amounts of money. In addition, the restaurant selection is fantastic! We always go to the more expensive restaurants to get the most out of the 'Free Dining'.
Bottom line, if it's offerer during your stay, take advantage of it!

I am hoping that they offer free dining. I think that is the only way my husband will be willing to go. In his words "I am all Disneyed out." But, I know me and my boys would be able to convince him if they were offered. But, on the off chance that it isn't, my boys and I are still trying to get my 18 month old to say "Disney."
I think that would would be a sure fire way to go. How could he deny his little princess.
We will see.
Free Dining, Free Dining you can't come soon enough.

we'll go even if they don't offer the free dining, the cost of it still comes out cheaper than paying OOP, especially with 3 17 year olds who LOVEEEE to eat :rotfl: but if they do offer it we may consider upgrading to WL or AKL or i'll spend all that savings on fun stuff :goodvibes

Well, I'm putting all logic aside and hoping we hear something about free DDP very soon! What's really killing me is that I will be gone the first week of April and won't have internet access. I seriously think I will just call CRO each morning and ask if it's a green light. It would just drive me insane if we missed the opportunity to book the promo because we were away from home!

then it looks like THIS is what is going to be offered. because I said to her, "Is this the FREE dining offer" and she said NO...that is would cost 35 bucks a day. and that there was not going to be a free dining offer, just the one I mentioned. She also told me to keep watching for it...and twice I said to her that I was not interested in paying 35 bucks a day for food I do not eat.

I too want to join the Free Dining Watch! We had free dining last year, and had a great time. Does anyone remember from previous years if free dining was offered at all the WDW resorts? Were some not included? We are interested in WL this time around. Also, was there a minimum night stay for free dining? I want to say last year it was a 3 night minimum, but I am not sure. Thanks!!

Just got off the phone with Disney, trying to get a code, wasn't one attached to my name. She said it was random.
Asked about free dining - She said they have not been told about it for this year yet - but if so, it would be the first of April again...
We had free dining the first year it was offered, it was wonderful!!! Stayed at a condo last year, it was very nice, most relaxing and easy trip so far. This year it was a toss up. Nice big condo for all 5 of us, or little room with lots of great food. We want the free dining plan!!! Crossing my fingers and hopeing everyday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just hope all these advanced bookings and reservations everyone has made in hopes of getting free dining hasn't messed up our chances for it this year!!!

03-15-2007, 10:44 AM
We will have free dining but the offer will not be as liberal as in the past. I'm betting that they will require a minimum amount of days be purchased on the MYW tickets in order to be eligible. No more one day tickets.
Either way I will need the dining plan. Ever at $35.00 a day each it pays for itself with just the TS meal each day.

You would have to call back and request the new offer. I don't think you'd have to worry about any fees as long as the changes were made 45 days prior to check-in. Also, usually anytime you make a change to your reservation that generates a higher price, they don't charge a fee.
However, please keep in mind that if everyone keeps booking in anticipation of free DDP...it will create higher occupancy levels and therefore shoot us in the foot!

Another one waiting for free dining :) We really really need free dining this year to stay on site as we're booking two rooms, instead of just one. My MIL got the 40% off code and I was tempted to book it...but I'm going to wait until April and then if no free dining we'll stay offsite.

Free dining would save us about 525. I'd probably book a few extras for DD4, and have a few $ left over. I posted a thread asking if free dining was offered, and the new offer required you to buy length of stay passes, if this was still a great deal for AP holders. Nobody responded, except someone who said they've only had to buy one day passes in the past. I know that, I just want to know if it would still be a good deal *if* they required length of stay passes this year. The UK offer required more than one day passes, so who knows?
Kitty-chan
03-15-2007, 01:29 PM
We're AP holders, light eaters, booked a AAA rate at POP for six nights during value season, and we usually eat mostly counter service. So, even if all that's required is buying a one-day one-park pass, I'll need to do the math to know whether free dining would mean significant savings for us.
But hey, I'm good with spreadsheets, and would love to have to do that math! And if it's offered I'll probably take it even if it's not a big savings for us, because I think it would be great to check out all the TS places that are usually beyond our reach.

The UK offer required more than one day passes, so who knows?
The UK offer wouldnt have saved us much at all this year! It required us to book a package (instead of booking flights and hotel seperate) and get a pass for the entire length of our stay, because we are AP holders it didnt work out a good deal!
Im booked in the dolphin now for 10 nights but we are also going to POFQ for 3 nights so im hoping for free dining too!

03-15-2007, 02:18 PM
We normally go every-other-year, but would be very tempted to squeeze an extra trip in this summer if dining were offered again. We enjoyed it sooo much last year. We figured out that we would about break even if we paid OOP for our meals or paid for the dining plan, but the dining plan for free saves us about $1100 (4 "adults" 7 nights). Heck, if it's offered, maybe we'll stay even longer (the longer we stay, the more we save and the more we eat :thumbsup2 ).

I'm hoping for free dining too. We'll be there 9/28-10/6 at POFQ. I just want to try some of the TS restaurants that everyone raves about without breaking the bank so we'll most likely pay for it. If there is no free dining, let's hope that we can at least get some kind of discount so that I can spend it on other things.:rotfl: I haven't done my ADR's yet but I'm looking forward to it.

We're booked end of Sept and traveling for the 1st time w/ friends and their children. Planned a few meals together and a couple of touring times but otherwise, separate. I think it will be great. Free dining would be fabulous, but we booked w/ a code and purchased the DDP so we're going regardless. Just, free dining would allow us to do MNSSHP and have more spending money! We all Love to pin trade!!!!! :cloud9:

03-15-2007, 03:16 PM
 I can't stand the waiting!! Even as I write this my heart-rate increases!! LOL! someone in another post brought up the fact that Disney must realize that we pour the money we save on dining into other activities and trips there! I know for me that free DDP means being able to go for a longer time (therefore giving them more money in hotel and park pass revenue). For some it means booking other activities like illuminations cruises and such (again, money still going to Disney). For others it means being able to go more than once a year (more money for Disney!)...
plus they would get the personal satisfaction of making millions of people (well, at least us Dis-ers anyway) happy!!:goodvibes
It is the year of a million dreams isn't it?
But the waiting is a killer!!!! :hourglass

Able to stay at the Poly with 40% off? I wish I had your problems  I have 6 people, need 2 rooms, and got no discount on anything, unless you count AAA, which works out to about $250 off my whole trip after I pay the membership fee. Free dining would be an absolute Godsend for me :)

I'm hopping on the FD train. I talked to a CM last night and he said he wasnt sure. They did the free dining b/c of Katrina and last year when they did it, it was to draw people back during the hurricane season.... but no rain at all last year. So he was not sure. Not even a rumor he said. He was a great guy.

No rain last year is what scares me. Last year when we went the last week of Sept - first of Oct we never got rained on once so my biggest fear is that there will be twice as much rain this year and we’ll end up not getting free DDP.

My dh doesn't want to go this year if free dining isn't offered. He loves Disney as well, but he's...ahem...frugal...yeah, that's the word, and was spoiled last year...lol. He wants to eat at LeCellier and Crystal Palace only for 10 days. (NOT happening) Free Dining would cost our family almost 1700 dollars (5 people 10 days)...so a HUGE deal for us. I might need a tranquilizer if I don't get my Disney fix this year. :scared: :faint: It's killing me that I haven't booked already!
btw...about the rain...September isn't usually a rainy month...only when there are depressions and hurricanes. So I'd say if those were not a factor at the time of your vacation, then you should just expect normal summer afternoon showers.

The year before (not last year but 2 years ago) when they first offered free dining it rained a lot. We even bought a pin for our lanyards that was Mickey in one of the yellow rain ponchos (really rubbery feeling like a poncho). We would put our ponchos on in the morning and sometimes you'd be able to take them off by noon and then back on in the evening :( We still had fun....but it was different since we never have ran in to that before. We have pictures of the parade in the rain....I'll be all those fuzzy animals were miserable in those costumes soaking wet.

Same here, needing 2 rooms is a killer! Free Dining lessens the financial pinch for our family of 6.

This year in May our family will be down from NY so we needed two rooms. We are DVC members and I booked a two bedroom which holds 8 with my points. We still needed more so they rented 1,026 points and we got anouther two bedroom at the BCV. Saved them alot of money. However in Aug if they get the free dinning DH and I will stay at POR. We are simple eaters so we never buy the dinning plan. We eat alot of counter service. Plus the one and two bedrooms at DVC have full kitchens. We were looking foward to trying the free dining this year though because we missed it the past 2 years.:sad2: I am from Fl. would be willing to go through a catagory 1 hurricane for free dining.:rolleyes1

Everybody see http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1389477? The web site associated with the Unofficial Guide is reporting that free dining may be offered 8/26 - 9/22. This web site is generally a good source, so while we can't bank on it yet this is a good sign.

If you arrive the last day of the promotion then using last year as a guide, you will be able to have dining your length of stay as long as it isn't over 10 days.
So, if you check in on the 22nd, you should have dining for up to 10 days thereafter...IF the plan is the same as last year's.

Just talked to a nutty women at Disney, I ask her about the FD. Of course she didn't know anything about it but did say it was highly unlikely as they are really busy even into Sept - Oct. She said that marketing is the one that make that desion, and from the projected attendence in was unlikey. Let's just hope that she was just nutty. :)

We had the free dining the last two years & it was wonderful! We tried so many new TS restaurants that we probably wouldn't have. This year we got the 40% for AKL & we're paying for the dining plan, so free dining wouldn't save us any money (unless we change resorts...which won't happen!!:lmao: ). But I still hope it happens for those who can use it! It's a great plan even if you have to pay for it!!

"Free dining may return
We ain't guaranteeing anything. If we were the wagering type, however, we'd bet that free dining will be returning for travel dates 8/26 through 9/22, if booked 4/12 through 6/24. As always, those dates are subject to change.

I was hoping for free dining to start earlier. We're going Aug 11th-21st. If we get free dining then I was going to switch from the Swan to a mod to save $$$. It was going to make the decision making easier. If we don't get free dining I have to decide whether to stay at the Swan (with a great price) or switch to a mod and get the DDP???? I don't want to have to decide... We haven't been to Disney in so long that I don't know what is best for our family of 7...:confused3 :confused3
So still hoping for free dining....

We'll be getting there 8/25. I guess we could split our ressie and book the 1st day as room only and then do a package with free DDP for the rest of the trip. Is that possible?

you should be ok. When/IF free dining comes out, you just need to call your TA and give them the code. Let them know what you want to do and just have them do it for you.
I like being able to do things my self and thats why I dont use a TA. I make too many changes (I would have used one if I got no discount however, I have AAA)

Talked to a CM last night to price out a possible August trip. No pins or codes for me:guilty: BUT he said why don't you book anyway and when the next offer comes out next month you can get in on that, after all you wouldn't want to not have a room available. I asked him if he meant free dining and he said it was highly possible. Now I knew better than to book, because any room I got now wouldn't necessarily transfer over to free dining. And it did seem a little sleazy for him to tell me otherwise. But I want to believe him about free dining!:goodvibes Here's hopin'!

I am wondering why CM's keep telling people to book NOW and change to free dining when/if it comes out? I thought if a resort runs out of free dining rooms you can't just switch to free dining because you are already booked there.....from what I hear you might have to switch to another resort with free dining rooms available.....just seems wierd....

I'm booked for 9/13-9/23 with dining plan. I've gone the last two years on free dining. I never booked early before but did this year because we are going regardless and wanted to make my ADR's. She said if and when it was released she would automatically transfer my reservation to free dining and email me with the details?

Also, anyone worried about hurricanes? Is August rainy season anyway?

I'm a little confused by some of the comments on here. From my understanding, there isn't a limit to how many free dining offers Disney will have available. I don't think it is limited to a certain resort or type of room. It was my experience two years ago that it is the same as purchasing the dining plan (where they don't limit the number of people who can purchase it or put restrictions like type of room), only you don't get charged for it. They might have changed it since I took advantage of it in 2005, but I don't think it is a "book now or you might not get a free dining plan room" type of situation.

Last year when I called to switch my reservation to free dining, I had to upgrade from WL woods view to courtyard view. The CM told me there wasn't any more woods view (or standard view) rooms left that could have free dining applied. I could have booked those views as room only or MYW pkg with paid for dining, so they were available. Other posters reported not being able to get their first choice of resort with free dining.
Hope that helps.

As 5DisneyNuts said - there are only a certain number of rooms allocated per resort for the free dining promotion (just like any other special or discount promotion). And within each resort, there are a number of rooms per category (i.e. standard, courtyard, garden view, etc.) that are allocated for the discount as well. This is why 5DisneyNuts had to upgrade to a different view when changing to the free dining promotion, and why I had to book Courtyard view at the WL during free dining last year - that was the only room category they had left for the free dining discount when I booked (all other free dining rooms were gone for woods view or standard view). I guess how many of these rooms they allocate per resort, per category depends on how many rooms are available when they announce the promotion. Does that make sense?
So actually, there is a limit to the number and types of rooms that are available for the free dining package. That's why you want to get in on the deal as soon as they announce it! :thumbsup2

Each person registered in the room will receive 1 TS 1 CS 1 snack per day of stay. ( it must be every day of the booking, for each person on the reservation, and each must purchase a ticket to be on the MYW package)
Can you imagine if people started inviting all there local (FL) friends to stop by and eat free? :scared1:

I could have booked those views as room only or MYW pkg with paid for dining, so they were available. Other posters reported not being able to get their first choice of resort with free dining.
Hope that helps.
I guess I stand corrected. Thanks for the clarification. Maybe the room I had in 2005 (Contemporary Tower - MK View) was one of their Free Dining Eligible rooms, so that is why I didn't know of the restrictions.

No problem :thumbsup2. As ekball said there seem to be a certain number of rooms in each category available for WDW promotions including free dining if offered.
BTW, I love the CR Tower MK View-it's the best!

We have 4 in our family doing the dining plan. we are bringing a teenager friend who doesnt want to do the dining plan. Is that allowed?
if you are getting him a pass, and are reporting him to disney as a guest, he has to be on it if you are.. Its all or nothing
That is correct, everyone that is listed on the reservation has to be on the same package - MYW with dining, all tickets for the same amount of days (even if it is just a one day ticket). FWIW, you might also have to upgrade to a deluxe room at AKL with 5 people listed on the reservation unless one in the group is under 3.

Thanks for the information! I am VERY lucky in that my BFF from college and her husband are Disney CM's. They typically can sign me and the family into the parks for one or two days for free when we go down on a 4 day trip. So I usually only buy single day tickets based on their work schedules instead of a 4 day MYW. So, my plans are for the family of 4 to stay at POFQ for 4 days/3 nights. Am I correct that I could buy a one day MYW ticket for each person and then I could (theoretically) be eligible for the 3 nights of free dining? :woohoo:

EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING is crossed that free dining is offered!!! I already booked my airfare for 8/24-9/2 and if the rumored dates are true we'll do 2 days room only then the rest a package. Whatever it is I NEED the DDP as we love to try new things and have many sit downs we usually wouldn't do so a big room discount of something will help as I will pay for the DDP.
158 days to GO :)

That's correct and then you can always upgrade some of those tickets at the front desk if you need to. The dining plan is based on nights of stay...

A couple of folks asked about the weather. If free dining comes thru this will be our third time for the last week of August. Generally expect rain every day. It doesn't rain long and it certainly doesn't cool things off! We found it to be almost like clockwork..we would come back to the room about 2:30 for a break, relax a little get organized for evening then go down to the pool. Then the skies would open up (I love to swim in the rain:cloud9: ) By the time we were ready to go back to the parks about 5:00 the rain stopped.
We have always managed to miss the hurricanes, but I would NEVER travel this time of year without travel insurance.

For those going only if free dining is offered, are you making your ADR's and then planning to cancel them if it is not offered? :confused3
I'm not sure if I feel comfortable doing that, without a reservation - but I guess it has to be done to ensure getting the ADR time preferred, right?
Thanks Dis

I struggled with the same dilemma as Mary-In-Oh, I felt like I would have been wasting my time if I booked ADR's and ended up not even going to WDW. Not to mention, by booking an ADR that I may not need I would be taking a spot away from someone who actually has a trip booked and needs the ADR.
Anyway, we booked our trip on saturday and made all our ADR's already with no problems. I just hope they offer free dining and it covers our dates, but we are going 8/10-8/17, which is earlier than the last two years of free dining and the rumored dates, oh well, that is when we are going.
This will be our third year in a row in August, the first was with free dining, which was great, last year we didnt use it and regretted it and this year we will pay for dining if we have to.

I'm another one hoping for free dining. We are going no matter what, but it would be nice to save $600 ! I may add park hoppers and water parks if free dining comes out!:goodvibes :surfweb: :hourglass
And it is posts like this (and those that say they will upgrade their rooms or add a few days, etc) that make me think it is more likely than not we will see either free dining or a comparable "special" discount program again this year. We were pulled in by free dining, taking two of our grandsons (ea 3 YO). We came home, ended up buying in to DVC, and have three trips planned before the end of the yr - one trip is for 20-26 people! Well worth Disney's "investment" of free dining for 8 days, I'd think.
Truth is, most of us will eventually look at the "savings" as a type of "free" money, and many of us will spend those "savings" 1 1/2 to 2X before we leave WDW.
JanineandMike
03-19-2007, 06:58 PM
i agree with the free money comment, and if free dining is offered i would really be tempted to just roll it over into staying at a moderate over the value we are booked in now (if available of course) but on the other hand getting back close to $500 dollars would be nice. that's why we booked a trip with a budget we are comfortable with, which includes paying for dining, so if we get it free later we can either enjoy the extra savings or upgrade our room, because we are going either way.

Since this is the year of a million years, here is my dream……..
On Monday April 2, 2007, Disney will offer to the general public, FREE dining for Aug 5 - Sep. and since this is my dream - I will be the first to find this info online. I call Disney and a CM immediately answers, book me, and then tells me, Mrs. DJM99 you are not only going to have FREE Dining, you have won $700 in Disney Dollar ($100 for every day I book). Wow, thanks Disney...... :cloud9:

You do not have to have a reservation at a Disney resort or any other hotel to make ADR's. We don't currently have a resort reservation, and won't be making one if free dining doesn't start until the rumored August 26, but I did go ahead and make a few ADR's, mainly for the hard to get places. I can't say I feel bad about "tying up" ADR's someone else could use, as I will cancel them if we don't end up going. I'm sure someone who has been trying without success to get into Le Cellier will be thrilled with my last minute cancellation!

I talked to a CM last night at Disney, and his words were " We look for the Free Dining to come out again this year but it won't start to the first to mid May." I then ask him if this is just what he thinks or he knows it to be true. He said, I haven't heard it come out of the Higher Ups mouth but "they" all think that it will happen from what they have heard. So... with that said. May is a little later than what I was hopping for, but I can wait............:rolleyes1

The same with us. We got free dining in 2005 and purchased it last year on our Christmas trip because we received another discount. Now the DW says she wouldn't go back without it!!! So I fully believe they earn back the dollars either immediately or in the future.

It was actually the end of March, 2006 that it was announced for Disney Visa cardholders. Keeping our fingers crossed here that it is announced again this year. If not, we're staying offsite in October instead of onsite in September.

Just subscribing to join you all in watching for free dining. We have a trip scheduled for May, but if they do free dining again this year - we're going in August too. Won't cancel my May trip - might have to shorten it tho. Wouldn't ordinarily do 2 trips so close together but DGD is getting older now and can't miss school and I can only be gone 5 days at a time.
Besides, now - thanx to you guys on this thread - I know I can just tell my husband I "won" a free trip in August. :lmao:

"A quick update to my original post. I read today that a lady who says she works for a company that Disney advertises with saw an upcoming ad proof that reads, "FREE DINING, it's delicious - don't believe us, ask the dishes." She said that it quotes a 5nt/6day package for $455 per adult based on double occupancy, with the offer being available most nights from 8/26-9/22. The date that bookings begin was not mentioned. I would expect that this would be a sample quote for a value resort. She also didn't mention what day this ad would run, so unfortunately it's all still rumor at this point. I hope that Disney does finally announce this officially very soon for those of you who are waiting."
Sounds good!

I do not believe the 8/26 -9/22 dates will end up being the "FREE Dining" dates . Just looking at mousesavers.com history of codes/rates, etc., I believe strongly that Disney will initially offer "FREE Dining starting August 5. This is way I feel like that.
In 2005, Disney offered "FREE Dining" for check in dates 8/21/05-10/4/05. The packages were for the general public and were made available 3 different times. The first time it was made available on 6/2/05, exp 7/3/05, then 7/19/05, and lastly extended Free Dining dates for 8/21/05-10/4/05. So in 2005 FREE Dining started 8/21
In 2006.......
FREE Dining was offered for the check in dates of 8/13/06-9/30/06 and the packages were for general public, they were made available on 4/4/06, and exp 6/4/06
Then a little later.... in 2006
The packages were for check in dates 8/20/06-9/30/06. The package discounts for general public ("free dining") made available on 6/2/06, exp 6/25/06.
So in my conclusion (if you understood the above info) In 2005 the FREE Dining packages were made available initially for check in dates of 8/21 then in 2006, initially made available on 8/13 (a week earlier), so my theory is that if Disney does offer FREE Dining, it will initially be available for check in dates on Aug 5th (a week earlier than last year). They might only allow 8/5 check in dates for a couple weeks but initially August 5th. Remember, this year Value Season BEGINS August 5th. Keeping in mind that this year we have a "new" summer season, its likely Disney will do something a little earlier this year. Besides why begin Value season so early. I think Disney was seeing the thread of low crowds in early August. As I stated in a earlier post, I went early August last year on a Thursday (August 3rd –I think), and I was able to get through MK with NO problems. I literally rode every ride and saw every show. The crowd was VERY manageable - not crowded at all!!!

DJM99, I would love your theory to be right, but you forgot one little thing. The Bounce Back Promotion. Had they not offered this, there would be more availability. Since these groups were offered this promotion in advance, it seem to have taken care of the earlier weeks and later weeks for the free dining. What the general public is going to get is the leftovers. If the BBP had not happened I would be more positive, however, I'm not and have pretty much moved to Plan B and have booked a 2 bedroom DVC location with my leftover points. I'm just waiting now for official announce so that I can start canceling my existing packages because I won't need them now. I did see a second reliable message out this morning, stating that someone has seen some information (publication ready to be released) that have the same dates that we saw earlier. I want the free ddp just as bad as others, but I don't think it going to turn out the way you and I both want it to.

I think you are assuming that many of these people that checked in during 11/8/06 thru 12/31/06 would want to be in WDW the first week of August and all these individuals that made (lets be honest) last minute, un-thought out vacation dates for the NEXT year kept those dates. Just reading these boards proves that people had to make changes to their bounceback dates - which I think, unqualified them for the FREE Dining. And by reading all those old post, it wasn't like the bounceback offer was being tossed in their faces. I read several post of individuals having to "find" the bounceback booth, call around to different resorts, and just go thru extra hoops to get it. I'm not saying it wasn't widely offered, but I'm saying you are assuming that these chosen winter vacation WDW travelers want to go to WDW in August/September. I just don't think we can assume that. And, I think we give this message boards a lot of power. I'd like to think we do too, but not really.

This is just getting crazy - right now I have a trip booked for October, but if free dining comes out we're going to go in august w/my parents. I feel like I'm in "limbo" - I can't book a flight, I don't want to make adr's without knowing what I'm doing, I may have to book a rental car.... I've never tried to plan a trip like this - I just wish we could find out soon so I know what I am doing!!!

I am so hoping that your theory is correct, djm99, since we will be going Aug 12, however, I think disney may have pushed a lot more people into taking an August vacation due to the new summer season they added this year. They raised the prices for July and lowered them for August. Normally, we probably would have picked July for our vacation, but couldn't justify spending an extra $30 per night at a moderate so we held off for August. Our kids don't go back to school until after labor day so it really doesn't matter to us. I'm wondering how many people have done the same thing. Between hopes for possible free dining in August AND the prices dropping significantly, I bet quite a few people opted for August this year instead of July. I'm hoping that they didn't, but I'm sure many did

I'll be soooooooo disappointed if this turns out to be true! But as the previous poster wrote - I wasn't thinking that the summer rates could push a few back a couple weeks. That’s if they did research and realize that Value season stated so early this year. It sure pushed my dates back. But then again, in doing research - some might be in inclined to book when its cooler vs early August. I was there last year, and prior to 2005 was consistently there during August, and attendance has really gone done. Since DH and I are both Educators early August is really the only time during the summer we could go. DH usually works summer school which ends late July. Attendance had been done like crazy. I think Disney will offer something early August. Beside I have to be optimistic!

I gotta say, while WDW is offering deals here and there to just certain people, Universal is offering great deals and perks to everyone. You can't beat their "front of the line" perk! I hope WDW isn't alienating their most loyal customers like all of us, but it sounds that way. We have decided to stay at Universal for part of our trip if the 8/26 start date is correct.

You know, it sounds like that 40% off code was a better deal than the FREE Dining. I did the numbers. My travel dates are Aug 6 -12. My 7 day 6 night in a Value preferred room Resort with 7 day hopper passes cost is $1399.05. Those same dates same resort same room with dining and the 40% code cost only $1159.80. - shot, I'd rather have that code for my dates then FREE Dining....... Lets wish this code for early August. :wizard:

It depends on the make-up of your family and where you are staying. I have done the math for my family at values, mods and deluxes, and the mods and vals come out cheaper with free dining, while the deluxes come out cheaper with the 40% off. There are 4 "adults" in my family, so the free dining is huge for us, $160/day. That is much more than 40% off a value! I would be happy with ANY discount...so far there haven't been any that apply to us.:sad2:

Someone mentioned a deal that Universal has about "front of the line". What is that? I have noticed some great deals on admission though. Does anyone know if my daughter's ages 10 and 6 will like Universal at all? My older one loves coasters, young one does not.
Also is Sea World worth it? How many days do you need at Sea World? We did Discovery Cove recently and were given 7 days free but werent able to use them becaue we were leaving for a cruise. Wish we had.

FOTL is if you stay at a Universal Hotel, you get a special pass and can go straight to the front of every line-no waiting. It's like a deluxe fast-pass for everything. The FOTL is offered to the public for a really large fee, but you'd get it free for staying there.
I have the same situation w/my kids. The older one loves coasters and the younger one just doesn't. We've decided to put off Universal for a while for that very reason. At disney, there seem to be more things for the entire family.
Sea World is AWESOME! If you can fit in your schedule, do it! I think your kids are the perfect ages to fully appreciate it. I think one full day during off-season would do it; two if it's a more crowded time.

Okay who has the code for 40 % off ??? I'm staying at Disney the week of Aug 1-7. Not sure where yet. Trying to decide this week if I'm buying a DVC membership. Free dining or 40 % off would help me save money and be able to wait on the DVC thing.

The 40% promotion ended on March 15th and it wasn't for your dates. It was for trips starting Aug. 22 to Oct. 3. The free dining has not been announced, but so far it looks to be for vacations starting Aug. 26 to Sep. 22. So you are like us and OOL.

I'm hoping for any discount at this point. We are staying at a mod (it's only 2 of us) but haven't crunched the numbers to figure out which would be better. I figure I'll worry about it when the time comes. Any discount helps out, if we get a discount on the room it will help pay for the ddp. If ddp is free then I can save money on the food. Either way it's a win win for us. If nothing is offered, I'm really going to have to be creative with my budget. :rotfl: Here's hoping for something. pixiedust:

Thanks for all the advice about Sea World. We have decided to work it in our trip. IF a code for free dining AND/OR 40% off code becomes available, which is best for moderate and delux resorts. We will be staying at POR and AKL OR ASMU and AKL. Not sure which way to go. Also, would AAA help me at all. We are not members yet but would consider if they offered a large discount.

Not to be mean...but I see this a lot on the DisBoards. Most of the people in the thread don't really care how many people have subscribed. I understand that posting a message will subscribe you, but you can also subscribe at the top of the page by clicking on Thread Tools, then subscribe. If we could all just do this rather than posting to tell the world that we are subscribing, then everyone would not have to spend as much time reading threads...there would be fewer pages to load and pages would load faster because the computer wouldn't have to download all of the graphics that are in the signatures.
I'm done with my rant now.
I am also awaiting the free dining announcement. I was hoping it would go a week later because I would love to be there for Epcot's 25th on October 1 and for the Food and Wine festival. But if dining is offered, then I will arrange my vacation around those dates. If no dining, then the vaca will start Sept 29th!

It really all depends on the make-up of your family, number of adults, children, what category room, etc. At this point, the ONLY discount rumored (through Disney) is the free dining, so it might be a waste of time to even think about 40% anymore.
I've been calling Disney at my leisure to price out all different packages, at rack rate, then backout the cost of discounts that might come available. I've figured out that for my family, free dining would be a better deal than 40% if I were to stay at val or mod or std. rooms at WL/AKL, because we are 4 adults, so the dining is worth $160 per day. If we go deluxe, 40% is a better deal because the rooms start out more expensive, so we'd take 40% from a bigger number. Anyway, may be a moot point.
AAA discounts tend to run around 15% off the rack rate for a room. If you call Disney and request AAA rate, you must book room only, no package, which means no DDP. You can also book directly through AAA, but I thought the discount is disappointing. It's better than NO discount, and they will book a package for you (but the discount is only on the room portion). AAA is good to have in an emergency, so I recommend getting it anyway. You can save lots of other places besides Disney, too.

One discount per reservation. Generally, you have to pick the one that works best and go with it. Most times, you are able to switch if something better comes available. Before you book a package, make sure you understand the terms for making changes or cancelling.
Good luck!

Hi!
Well I am new to the boards. I've been to WDW as a dependent, but never the trip organizer. I am freaking out as my first time planning a trip as a mother! I picked a Sept. trip as my son is on a year round cycle school and is on fall break. Also my husband dreads crowds, so I figured it was just a good time for us overall.
I've been wrestling with staying on site versus staying off site, but free dining in Sept. is really a powerful motivator. We aren't big eaters, but not having to dock every snack and meal would be refreshing. So I think I might just reserve a room with WDW and make some ADRs this weekend. My question is, if I have to redo or cancel the reservation to add the full magic with dining package, do my ADRs get cancelled or transferred over to my new reservation? I'm only looking to do a few ADRs. I don't want to overplan
Thanks!

We went in '05 for free dining (end of Aug.) and it was not very crowded.
You will have to rebook your room ressie when and if the dining deal comes out, and being able to get the same type of room/location or the same resort will be subject to availability.
BUT...
I think your ADRs are related to your phone #, as offsite guests can also make ADRs.
You will need to make ADRs for all of your Table service meals if you plan on eating them, as walk ups are VERY hard to come by during the free dining period.
Some people have had some luck, but not something to chance, especially if you have children involved.
It is a pain to work around, but it was so nice to have a time each day when we sat down and relaxed.
ETA: I am hoping for free dining. For us, its a no brainer. We're staying at a value, and we will have 4 adult prices and 4 children prices. That's around $2000 savings for the 10 nights we hope to stay.
If you stay at a value resort during value season, you would have to save $80/day for two adults to make a room discount cheaper. Not gonna happen in a room that cost $92.50/night including tax.

I've been to WDW during just about every crowd level (everything from Easter week to the end of January when no one is there). I went for free dining last year and the ONLY time I've seen it LESS crowded is during the end of January/beginning of February. We never waited more than 10 minutes for ANY ride or attraction, and honestly, I don't ever remember even waiting that long. I can't STAND crowds (I don't even do well at the local mall), but I was fine.
