Ever wonder why they charge for ice at FW when they don't at the movies or music resort, I'm paying as much for my prefered site as I did for a room at the music resort last time we went. And we did fill up our cooler there too, like most people do. I know there's no answer for this because they just do, but I think it's a shame because we are paying resort prices. I really don't think campers use an excessive amount of ice any different than a resort guess, just a thought :confused3

I didn't know they do that since this will be our first time there! hmpffffffff
How much do they charge?
I shouldn't complain to pay for ice since it is a campground but the Mickey soaps do sound like a nice tradeoff.

I have read on the boards that ice is 2.00 a bag, about what it would be in any campground, but other campgrounds are loads cheaper and you can see why they would charge for it, but at FW you are paying resort pricing and you would think ice would be included like everywhere else on property. I think they have done this for years...

I would think that people who are camping use much more ice than the normal person staying in a hotel room. In a regular hotel room I normally never even use the ice machine, and I don't think most people bring coolers with them for use in the regular resorts. When we camp, we drag our giant cooler that can hold a lot of ice. When you multiply that by the many campsites - that's a lot of ice (and it's not free for disney to run and maintain the machines). It were free I think a lot of people would use even more (costing even more $$$), even if they didn't really need it.
I think it's only $2.00 and I usually need to use two of the provided bags to be able to carry it all.

Terri, I totally agree that you should at last get ice for free at the fort. The first time we stayed there I saw the ice machine at the comfort station and thought oh cool in a good place so everybody can get to it easily. Then I saw the money slot and thought wow u even have to pay for ice here. I would think WDW could at least give u a token for 1 bag a day or something. It doesn't really effect me because it's usually just DD and me and we have a travel trailer which holds our drinks and food in the fridge but somebody with a tent or pop up depends on coolers and should be given free ice.

Wow it never crossed my mind we were about the only ones to bring a cooler into our resort room. When I read your response all I can say is thank goodness they have the good sense to charge us for ice. I wouldn't ever want to take avantage of WDW. Thanks for the heads up !

Don't stop with the ice.
How come:
1. Towels are not provided at the FW pools?
2. For that matter, why not provide towels for the guests to use in the comfort stations? People who stay in the All Stars get all the towels they want.
3. How about some Mickey soap and shampoo in the showers? All the other resort guests get that.
4. Why no room service at the camp sites? They could at least have Pizza delivery.
The answer is- WDW doesn't provide these services, because they don't have to! FW is nearly always full, and there are people willing to pay almost the same, (if not more) for a campsite as they would for a budget WDW hotel room.
If you think about it, camping is not necessarily cheaper than staying at a budget resort.
But, you cannot beat that FW ambiance! It is worth every penny. So, save up some quarters, and don't think about the two bucks you have to pay for a lousy bag of ice. And, BTW, a poster on this thread said that you usually get more than a full bag of ice. Not anymore! On my last two trips, I got about 3/4 of a bag both times I used the machines. That, I did not appreciate.

The ice question was just a basic observation...my tt has an ice maker so it wasn't a personal complaint...we could go on and on...why not have a wake up call , they have these at the value resorts, why not mousekeeping, they also have this ? Yea, why not towels at the pools, why the pet charge ? Why not an extra charge per extra adult...oh wait they do have this..goody, we're almost even.

I don't consider FW to be a value resort. If you look at the price of a cabin vs other resorts it falls somewhere between a mod and a deluxe. I see the price difference between a cabin/campsite as the same relative ratio to Disney's cost to provide each. In many cases, campsites can be more expensive than value resorts.
At any rate, I have spent much less per night elsewhere than my Disney campsite and recevied a complimentary newspaper. Heck, I would even pay extra for it.
Why not have a cart go around with sweatrolls, coffee, newspapers, etc in the AM. I hate having to go to the Meadows/Settlement for a newspaper if they still have any.

I rarely see mean remarks anywhere on DIS so when they appear it is nice to see the Moderators jump right on them. Keep up the good work. But, back to the original post...as campers, I think we will all agree that we have not found any campground we have stayed at, give away ice. After what we have payed for our equipment, whether it's a tent or a luxury motorhome, the expense of a $2 bag of ice should be the least of our concerns. As expensive as FW is ( if that's what you think ) imagine what it would be like if they did give you ice or a newspaper or towels? :scared1: ;)

They sell the $2.00 a bag ice in the store and out of the machines. I have found that the bags supplied at the machines are not near big enough to handle all the ice that comes out of the machine so I take a large bucket and fill it up. You get far more ice out of the machine then at the store.

I believe that the bags say they are 7 pounds.
I also think that the machines have been adjusted in the past few months to give less ice. On a trip this past November, I got only about a half a bag from the ice machine at the 900 loop. A camper who was in the site right next to the comfort station saw me walking back with my half-full bag and said that a lot of folks had complained about that machine, and supposedly it had been worked on, but it still was giving out less than a full bag. Most recently, just last month, I got shorted by the ice machine in the 800 loop. I got about 3/4 of a bag. As I'm sure you remember, there always used to be piles of ice around the ice machines, because the bags would not hold the ice. I don't see that happening any more.

To me it seems that the ice sold at the store is frozen "harder" than the ice at the machines. It seems to last longer. (It has been a few years since I've bought ice though).

There are times I wonder some of these things too. As for soap, towels etc., I can understand not giving these. If they stocked the comfort stations, those things would be taken in mass quantity and none would be left for anyone else. But, it might be nice to have a care bag or something when you check in with a couple of bottles of mickey shampoo, some soap etc. But, they dont' have to and most people camping have this stuff with them anyway.
I never have used the ice machines so didn't even know they weren't free.

Bring that muffin on over to the Kiwi if I am there and you can have some fresh ground Kona coffee. This year, I'm bringing the French Press for some press pot Kona. FWguy and FWdog are up early (6 am) and the coffee will be on. Just be quiet so FWgirl can sleep in.

We stayed in the cabins about 6 months ago, and I was surprised when we went to the pool that there were no towels, and I guess it was because the cabins do cost as much as a deluxe resort. Ironically, we are tent camping next month, and I wouldn't expect little luxuries camping, even though we are at the same place. I do agree though that it would be nice to get a little bag of toiletries or something at check in.

Many years ago, (2001/2002) they used to have the soap/shampoo dispensers in the showers in the 1500 Loop, but that has also gone away.
