:charac2: Does anyone else get that, you must be crazy look from non DVCers when you say you bought into it? Most people I know think I'm a pretty smart person but when I talk about DVC to family or friends you would think I had 2 heads with the look I get. I just wondered if anyone could relate to this?

Yup, all the time! But we don't care. It's our happy place and we share it with family and friends who understand.
We just added 150 points :cool1: ! So let 'em scratch their heads and wonder what is "wrong" with us. Less people to compete against when making our ressies ;)

I think I got it over the phone yesterday from my mother when I mentioned my husband and I were probably going to buy in.
I wish there was a better word than "timeshare" to use, because I'm pretty sure she stopped listening after that. People already think I'm crazy for going to WDW once (or more) a year so what's a little more derision? :)

Oh yeah. The biggest problem seems to be that they cannot grasp the concept of points and how they work. It takes a lot of explaining and sometimes the glazed over look is still there. Oh well, I know it is a great value so that's all that matters.

hahaha! i know exactly what u mean and i just became an owner. still waiting for my packet to arrive. believe it or not i am also considered to be a "smarte" person by freinds and famile. when we told them we bought into dvc they didnt know what to say. i know its somewhere between congrats (i think) and boy r u stupid! everyone knew it was only a matter of time before we bought a "timeshare" but they never would have guessed it to be dvc. i can tell they almost feel sorry for us because they think we got suckered. oh well, i cant wait to show them all our pictures from our first visit to ssr probably next year. i bet after they see the pics they'll start asking some more questions :)

Yep. Count us in as 'people who just cannot be thinking logically!' I was a little shocked at others' reactions and can totally understand why you submitted this post.
Fortunately, there are boards like these and you can see the excitement in those who have and are purchasing!!! Also, my SIL/BIL have been DVC owners since 1994, so they are thrilled we joined and have enjoyed their benefits for over a decade now! They have never regreted their purchase and in fact, just added a 150 points!

I'm a single guy who owns , with my mother on the deed too. I explain the whole thing and how it works to dear ole dad. Dad is also my boss at work.
Last year go away on vacation to BWV during summer.
I tell dad this winter I'm going back this summer. He says " AGAIN?" you just bought DVC last year, are you gonna buy it again.
I guess he thinks it cost $22,000.00 for a one week trip to Disney World. Thank goodness mom understands! <G>

We get it just from going to WDW so often I don't even tell people we own! We just got back and my sister said "aren't you sick of that place yet" I replied yeah but cm's come to our home beat us up and take our money forcing us to go back.:rotfl2: Why in the heck would we go if we were "sick of the place"

My MIL had a similar reaction. "You want to go again?"
As my husband just said to me, "You can go hundreds of times and it's different each time." We still haven't done everything yet.
We just did Family Magic Tour in December and we plan to do Cirque DuSoliel for the first time in June. :)

What about the comment--"You are going to Disney again? Didn't you just go there. . ." Though now my "little" sister is slightly hooked! She now wants to go with me every 2-3 years now that she has a job. Most people ask what is there to do if you have already been before without realizing that each trip is different than the last. That's fine with me, the less people know the real Disney, the fewer crowds for me to deal with on my trips! Though I now have my good friends' toddlers telling everybody I am taking them--they are 3 and 4--to Disney, just the 3 of us. . . They seem to forget their older sisters and parents are going too. . .

I have a friend who bought at OKW in 1996. I thought she was nuts. So in 1999 she invited me to a weekend with online friends at OKW. I fell in love with the 2 bedroom. About 6 months later, I bought at BWV. I loved that area from when I stayed at the Beach Club. Now my mom thought I was nuts. Until I took her to OKW about 6 months later. As she walked around the 1 bedroom with her jaw dropped, I knew it was worth it!:goodvibes When we got home, she was telling everyone about "our apartment"!

We have been to WDW several times the past few years and our friends DON'T GET IT. My parents have been a lot with us too and I have not even told them. My dad gets burned out on Disney but my mom loves it. We will probably NEVER TELL OUR FAMILY. :rotfl: They don't get it, they don't appreciate it like we do. I have a close friend that became members about 2 years ago...SHE GETS IT. We talk Disney all the time. Our kids love it and their kids will too. Who cares what the rest of the NON DIS world thinks. :hippie: Peace-Love and Disney.

I get those looks all the time. Usually, those people already think I'm nuts for going to WDW that often. I'm from CT and amazingly, the people that don't understand why I go to WDW so often, have no problem going to the Jersey Shore (which I despise) every weekend in the summer. But "that's different".

Hey, CT. I hear you! We're land-locked here in lovely central OH and people either go to VA Beach or Myrtle. Give me FL beaches and WDW any day!!! In fact, we had gone to WDW in July and then spent a week there before Christmas. Want to hear the worst part? We hadn't joined DVC yet!!! That's approximately $4,000 we could have put towards our membership! Ughhh! :headache: Anyway...talk about a magical time! I had never been over Christmas and the decorations were beautiful (not to mention the 80 degree, never-rained-a-day-while-there weather!!!). You guys are right...a different experience EVERY time you go.
Wishing all of us many happy, healthy, safe & magical returns!!! :grouphug:

Yup, we're new members and some of the few people we've talked to about it with give us "the look". Of course, it's odd because while we get "the look"....often times at some point in the ensuing conversation a hint gets dropped about going with us on a trip. :)
As for "the look", I ignore it. I know what value it is to my family and, since I dont' tell others how to spend their money, I don't expect others to tell me. I just smile and mentally move them to the bottom of the "maybe go with us someday" list. ;)

There are a few people who scratch their heads, but being from Florida, it's more accepted that you spend a fair amount of time at WDW.
And I find once we invite the doubters along on a trip or two, they quickly change their minds.
One of my favorite things is to take guests into a 2 bedroom unit at OKW! Never had one yet who wasn't amazed.

I get so tired of being asked, Disney Again?? Why on earth would you buy that timeshare? Non DVC people just don't get it. My family, as most who own DVC, absolutely love everything Disney. I just have to dart back, with their love, oh skiing again, or Oh Vegas again. It is just a matter of what you like to do. If you love Disney and go frequently then DVC is a better way to go, I feel. More economical for my family anyway. If I have 2 heads in the conversation then so be it!!!:)

I am so with you!! DH and I have both done financial analysis as part of our jobs, so I think people believe us when we say it's a good deal if you go often enough. I think they just don't understand why we would go that often!! Mind you, most of these people have either never been, or went once as a kid 20 years ago. They don't know what they're missing!! I bet a lot of people who say, "You're going again?" think that there's only Magic Kingdom -- with Space Mountain, a few characters and some kiddie rides. :rolleyes1 They probably think we spend our time singing "It's a Small World Afterall" over and over again. ;)
If they all knew the truth about our World.......it would be too crowded.

Since my entire family owns a DVC (Parents, Sister), I don't get this from my family. However, our neighbors and people that I work with don't get it. They think we're rich because we go to Disney every year. I've even explained the DVC to them and they lookat me like have 6 heads.

I am glad I started this tread. I knew that 1 way or another we all have shared the same experences with family and freinds. The people I love the most My children and wife and grandkids get it. Of course they do get the benefits. I just find it disearning that people actually give you that look of lost respect for your judgement or how could you possibly want to go anywhere that often. I do understand that concept tho. I have had great vacations other places the first time around, then you go again and the trill of the adventure is not quite as neat as the first time there. Except for Disney I have been there at least 7 times using DVC and each trip is truly a new adventure. Its like going to my own apartment in WDW, how cool is that. It is heart warming to me that there are so many us 2 headed people running around and we have a site like this to talk to other 2 headed people. Apparently 2 heads are better than 1!

I'm single, upper middle-middle aged, no kids and I'm a member. I'm so glad I am, but that's not how I started.
When my sis and her family bought, I thought (but didn't say) they were crazy. How many times can one go to WDW after all? ;) Then I met them down there and fell in love with the place. Ironically, we didn't even stay in her BCV place that time--used a military deal at Contemporary. Next time I went with them, we stayed at BCV.
I went again, stayed at Shades of Green; then again to BCV. It occured to me that the air they pump into WDW addicted me. I bought my SSR home last year and have used it three times. Work friends think I'm nuts, but like so many others have said here, each trip is different.
Maybe I do have two heads, but both are filled with Dis dreams, so let them scoff. I'm where I want to be when I'm at WDW!!!

Get those looks and comments ALL the time! (just had it 5 min ago from a friend). My brother and sister in law joined us in October, and they get it now. They understand that it's not that we are "theme" park addicts, but we enjoy a good resort with all the amenities that are included.
Gee, that's 2 down and 999,999 people to go. Maybe we could do the 6 degrees of separation theory and eventually ALL would understand!

I am purchasing right now and some not all give me the whole timeshares are not an investment like Real Estate. I say I'm not in it for an investment, I'm in it for 50 years of awesome Vacations at a great price. I also get the whole, there are more places to go than Disney.
That's true and as a Military person I travel alot of places. China Thanksgiving, Guam next month, and Australia in the summer, but even though I have been to alot of places, no where gives me the joy that Disney does.
Whenever I ask my kids where their favorite vacation spot is they always say Disney. I guess I will just live with the so called bad investment and have a great time loving it. Oh yea, most of these people are not very happy.
DVC soon and thrilled with my decision to finally do it. :thumbsup2
Have a great Day!

We get that crazy look all the time. We've only been members for about a year yet we have been to Disney 4 times with plans for a return visit in June and 2 trips in 2008. We just added on again( won't tell anyone. They don't understand why we bought in the first place.) We just say we are going to Florida. If they ask then we tell them WDW. We usually get the "AGAIN!". At first we tried to get family members to go with us. You mention the words timeshare or Disney and that seems to put them off, so we say more points for us. I finally got my side of the family to commit to a trip using the" before we get too old, medically incapable and just too busy" I would like to plan a Disney in Dec. trip 2008. My parents are the only ones still iffy, but they can't seem to plan anything that far in advance.Go figure....They are retired!
Believe it or not I took my husband (then boyfriend) twelve years ago to Epcot for the day. The next year when we were down in Florida, I wanted to go to Mk for the day. My then fiancee's responce was " We have already been to Disney." I told him we hadn't touch the tip of the iceberg with Disney. 8 years later ...guess who thought we should buy into DVC?? You guess it, my husband! Now we are going to be down in Disney for our 10 year wedding anniversary in June. How sweet it is!!!!!! Be patient, most people will warm up eventually. But do you want them to???!!!!

We have decided not to tell my parents/brother that we are buying in, precisely because of that look. We did explain the concept to my parents during their visit last week, and my dad did seem to sort of get it, but he is very conservative and anything that has the word "timeshare" even remotely associated with it makes him go  .
In-laws all think it is great and want to come try it out. MIL/FIL don't do very well financially, so we will likely treat a time or two. BIL has a ton of Marriott freebie points from super-travel, plus they are very well-off, so he won't even accept our pts for a trip.
DH took me for the first time as an adult last year, and I was a doubter. However, I think that the air there must be addicting, because we have gone 3 more times since, and decided to buy DVC last month.
I get the "you are going to WDW again??" at work a lot, especially as we are a child-free couple. :lmao:

I don't even tell people about DVC unless I know it is someone who gets it. We joined in 2004 and then did the 7 night Western DCL cruise. Last year we had 6 nights at BCV and then another 5 nights at VB. In September we are using points for one of us and cash for the other for another 7 night cruise. The points we are banking we are going for 2 weeks to BCV and VB in 2008. Yes, it was a big waste of money.:rotfl2:

I think it all has to do with their concept of Disney and what to do while they are there. Last year, just prior to buying into DVC DH and I went with my mom and dad. They only go once in a blue moon, not yearly like DH and I do even though we do not have kids. They are used to doing Disney commando style (with my nephew) and standing in lines forever. I explained we'd be doing things differently and the plan was to relax and have fun :rolleyes1 We went during Thanksgiving (yikes crowds:scared1: ) but I had ADR's for all meals and had booked a tour for each day we were there and made sure we went back to the room to relax and unwind. I thought dad would be the hardest to impress since he's used to doing it "his" way. I think he had the most fun! They never knew about booking tours or making ADR's. I thought Dad would have had a hard time enjoying Hoop Dee Doo review since English is a second language for him and can be somewhat challenging. That was his favorite thing second only to the Segway tour! Other than Soarin we did not ride anything that wasn't part of a tour and they both completely loved the expreience!
So, once we bought DVC and broke the news, they were so excited about coming along on our next trip! They were both very supportive and are looking forward to doing some vacationing with us from time to time. My brother on the other hand, totally doesn't get why or how we could go to WDW as much as we do, much less buy DVC  In his opinion WDW is the most stressful thing he can think of and can't wait until his DD2 and DS11 are old enough to not want to go anymore. I suppose he hasn't considered the fact that they very well might have inherited MY love for WDW :lmao: I kinda feel sorry for him, he has no idea what he's missing! I told him to just gimme once chance and do a Disney trip with me and see if he changes his mind. It hasn't happened yet but I don;t give up very easily. As for the rest of the world (friends co-workers) they already think I'm nuts so this isn't a big surprise :rotfl2:

None of my family gets it, I really wish they did. It must be a gene.( and I'm glad I have it) I love community theater and most people in that love disney. No DVC'ers but if they knew the details( or just took the time to investigate ) they probably would be neighbors. I talk to a person tonight that goes every other year, now he could stay in at a DVC for what he pays for that value resort. People just don't get it. Even Disney lovers don't get it.

My family really doesn't get it but they respect our choice in DVC ownership. Co-worker opinion is pretty mixed. One co-worker loves all things disney but is happy enough to stay at the All Star's or Pop Century and doesn't feel that DVC is for her because her husband never travels to WDW with her. Another peer commented (before we actually finalized the contract) "I wouldn't waste any money on that...I told my kids that we're done with Disney!" Most people know how much we love WDW and just laugh..."so when are you going again?"

So far we've shared our Dinsey "home" with our good friend and his two children, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, two sisters, a nephew, a neice her husband and their two children, and in April we're going with a dear friend, his wife, and their three children! None of them will ever look at us with that two headed stare again!

We know all about the "look". Thankfully we do have some friends that get it, and we hope to take my MIL and FIL next January. If we can actually get them to go, I'm sure they will be converted as well.

We also have had the same problem over the last 10 years. We have owned DVC for the last 7 years and have gone there every year since we bought. Everyone always asks where we are going for spring break even though they know where it is and I usually just say Fla. I always feel vacations are very personal and should be where you enjoy yourselves and really feel comfortable and safe. We are taking friends this year and the last 2 years we have taken family. We have all of the sudden come into a problem next year because now family wants to come with us again and all the families from the senior class want to come down too. All of the sudden they all don't want to go to Mexico (not sure if it is because if everyone can drink). They actually say they dont want to ever go back to Mexico with the kids so Im not sure whats happening there. I will have to ask. Lots to think about before next year.

I like the one where they say "Oh, that's right - you have to go to Disney - you bought that timeshare there, didn't you?" And then you get the look.
We get this comment all the time! We also get the "Why don't you just go to Six Flags? It's cheaper and it's the same thing." Umm....No!

I was wondering after reading about the "look" we get from non-Disney people, has anyone ever had a friend or family member dislike WDW after a trip? A recent trip that is, not 10 yrs. ago. I've only read about people who "get it" after they have been there. Has anyone not "gotten it" after a trip?

Oh yea, I know people have not "gotten it" after a trip. I'm sure these are some of the people that become the ones who give the strange looks. Some of the reasons they dislike Disney after they go, is because they do it "all wrong" IMHO. They go in the summer, or on a holliday weekend, they pick hotels that involve the most logisitcal nightmares, and they don't plan for any meal reservations. Plus, they don't understand other things such as the fastpass system, etc. One huge mistake I feel is not scheduling in some "non-park" days. This is a huge help to making a 7 day + trip go very well.
So when they get back hot, sunburned, out of money, and a from a week of standing in line after line even for dinner, yeah they "don't get it". I think every first timer should go with an experienced guide and planner to help show them how it's done right... :)

Get it all the time. In fact my DH uncle tried to talk us out of it and tell us it was a scam (but he is a scrooge anyway)
I have friends tell us we were crazy for buying but who do they call when they want to go to WDW and see if they can use our DVC,then get upset after we say yes and tell them how much we will charge them, after that we tell them to book it themself and see. HA HA!!!!!!!!

:teacher: Excellent reply!! You are dead on right. :worship: They make work out of it and miss out on all the pre vacation excitment in the planning. Not having some kind of dinner plan can make it very stressful. Before having DVC I would think about how much I spent just to get in, I mean your paying al least $500 a day for the family to be there ( with room), and waiting 1 to 2 hours for a table, or finding out all booked up and then being frustrated to go more time looking for food. Its crazy!! The dining plan made us make ressies 1 trip and omg what a differents. Not thinking about where to eat for dinner, walking past people just trying to get a ressie with kids in tow, tired, hungry, and get turned away. Been there done that!!
You are absolutly right, these are the people that don't get it. And if I didn't love disney so much I probably would have turned out to be 1 of them. Man I get so excited to think I will be there again soon.

We also are one of the Been There Done That crowd before finding the DIS and buying into DVC. I've often thought of all the wasted time we spent in lines, doing the commando type touring and hoping to find a Table Service place to eat that had availability. :scared1:
Thankfully, those days are behind us now. :)

DH and I are still deciding whether to buy in or not, but we've been once per year since 2002 and we LOVE the magic. You either get it or you don't and you can't explain it to those that don't. They think it's all about waiting in lines and eating at CS in the parks over and over again. If only they knew about all the wonderful dining, just stroller along at DTD or BW, and the wonderful resorts/DVC homes...
Thankfully we 'get it' and we'll continue to go each year - LOVE IT!!

We went to Six Flags Atlanta a couple of weekends ago while visiting family on Spring Break. Cost us $250 to get into the park for one day (not including food), and the kids were sick of it by lunchtime. My 4 year old kept asking where the Princesses were and if they came to this "world" when they leave WDW. :rotfl: (DH's answer under his breath: Yes, if they're very bad, St. Peter sends them to this world when they die.)
I just kept thinking--for this amount of money, we could have gone to Disney World. :headache:
As to the looks when the word "timeshare" is mentioned....my sons (6 & 8) once told their friends that we have an apartment at Disneyworld. I liked that so much, I've started saying it too. :rotfl:

Try living in Orlando and telling people you belong to DVC. They really think you are crazy! I just smile and think about that nice little weekend escape by the pool at OKW when the real world gets to be too much.:goodvibes

When we bought, we got the "In my day, people didn't treat Disney like a week-end retreat! It was a once or twice in a lifetime vacation" from my Dad. Well we took my parents (who are now the grandparents) on a week-long vaction in a 2BR at BCV with the DDP! They loved it! By the end of the week they were talking about "next time" and "what about coming with db/sil/nephews sometime"? (which would be fun, we agree).
DF talked to other DVC families who mentioned how often them come. I think they liked the idea of a "resort" experience. It took them awhile to get into it (Dad showed up at the pool with his bath towel the first day.) DM realized how a bit of organzation really enhanced the trip when we were touring the grounds after having dinner at Boma and the woman she was sitting next to in the waiting area mentioned that they had wanted to try Boma, but that one needed to make reservations months in advanced to get in at a decent hour.
We can't wait for "next time" with them!

At first family & friends thought we were crazy, especially being from California (we have Dland....so  ). Now they are dropping hints like crazy.. "going in December HUH ???... who are you taking?" :sad2:
We use DVC as an excuse. Both of our families live in the Tampa area, and while we love our parents, they do get on our nerves as times. We tell them we "must" use our points, as we got roped into buying them and they're so expensive and we just can't waste them. :rolleyes1

We have gone to Disney only once per year untill last March, when we bought into DVC. Now we have gone 3 times in the last 12 months- our last trip was the first week of March 07. We stayed two nights at Saratoga, two nights at Boardwalk and four nights at beach club. Before we bought into DVC we would stay at the Moderate resorts, usually Carribean Beach- what a difference! We had so much fun staying at 3 different resorts. As soon as we got back home, I booked again for week after Thanksgiving! That's what I love about DVC- being able to go whenever you want! I think my best friend is jealous now because when she called to find out how my trip went, she sounded irritated when I told her about going again in November. I don't know, maybe we are a little over the top, but who cares, we work very hard all year, why shouldn't we go as much as we can?

:charac2: Does anyone else get that, you must be crazy look from non DVCers when you say you bought into it? Most people I know think I'm a pretty smart person but when I talk about DVC to family or friends you would think I had 2 heads with the look I get. I just wondered if anyone could relate to this?
oh yes!! when I first bought in 2005 my mom kept telling me how Clark Howard ( a TV guy) said that timeshares are a bad idea and waste of money. SO...I have brought her along on my 3 of my trips and guess who just bought at SS in Jan? that's right....my doubting mom!!:lmao: there is hope for the doubters!
I also have this girl I know who asked me if I would ever grow up? I just looked at her and told her there were a lot of fun things for adults and she said she found that hard to believe. Then she tells me she's never even been. Had to feel sorry for her at that point....she will never experience the magic...while, we (the DVC) get to experience and share the magic....how wonderful!!pixiedust:

Does anyone else do this? Sometimes I'll be talking to someone and they will ask what travel plans we have for the next year (they know we're retired and can go when and where we want to). I'll say we're going down to Florida a couple of times and also to Hilton Head Island. And then it might get mentioned that we went last year and will go back next year. Inevitably it comes up about where we're staying. Usually I just say we have a timeshare in Florida and another one at Hilton Head. I don't usually go into the details that this is a Disney timeshare, etc. I'm not trying to hide the fact and if the person wants more info. I'll just say it's a timeshare we bought from Disney. But it is sometimes just easier to say Florida or Hilton Head timeshare than have to explain what DVC is. I wonder how many people when they hear the term Disney Vacation Club associate it with a timeshare. I bet most don't until they get into the details.
