The lists are made. There are piles of clothes stacked in the corner of our bedroom. The birth certificates and luggage tags are in an envelope on the desk. A years worth of planning and excitement and researching and discussing and questioning and agonizing is coming to a head over the course of the next nine days. BUT…

It hasn’t been without trauma. :headache: Over the last two weeks, it seems that we have been met at every turn with something that frustrated and made us want to crawl in a hole, pull the dirt over our heads and stay there until they called our boarding number. Most of the trauma has been cruise related… some not. See, here’s the thing…

This is going to be our third Disney cruise. We started with a 4-night Wonder, graduated to a 7-night Western last May, and are now doing the 7-night Eastern. All previous cruises have been with my wife and I and our teenage daughter. Well this time, we are bringing my wife’s parents. We’ve never had to account for anyone else on vacation before. We’ve never had to worry about other people’s happiness and enjoyment of the vacation before. My Mother-in-Law (MIL) and Father-in-Law (FIL) have never been on a vacation in their entire lives. Ever. Ever ever. They are in their late fifties and have never gone anywhere for pleasure to relax or do anything away from their normal, everyday lives. So the idea to take them with us on our next cruise was born almost the day we disembarked from the Magic last May, and the idea blossomed bigger and bigger ever since. So here we are, nine days away from a very first vacation for them, and we have done everything in our power to make it a memorable one. There in lies some of our recent frustrations:

We requested connecting rooms. We didn’t get them, but the rooms are at least side by side. Okay, we can live with that. It might be better that way anyway. :rolleyes1

We requested the early dinner seating. We didn’t get that either. We’re down for the second seating. This was a really important one for us. My wife’s parents live by a drastically different schedule than we do (and quite possibly drastically different from the rest of civilization as well). They tend to get up somewhere around 4am-ish in the morning, have dinner around 3pm-ish in the afternoon, and be in bed by 8pm-ish. So taking this into consideration, having the early seating was very important to them and to us. We didn’t want them face down in their Celebration Cake at 9pm at night, although there are reasons to dive into your dessert face first, sleeping isn’t one of them. So as of right now we’re down for the second seating. I know that we can see about getting this switched once on board, so I’ll head to Rockin’ Bar D to see what’s what.

Also, two weeks ago my FIL decided that he’d like to go bottom fishing. :fish: My wife and I had been wondering what we could do to make this special for him. He isn’t the most excitable man in the world. He is retired and isn’t really involved with anything in the community and doesn’t really have any hobbies or interests. Weeks and weeks and weeks ago we brought up the idea of fishing, but at that time he wasn’t interested. Well all of the sudden two weeks ago he pipes up wanting to go. Well the Bottom Fishing Excursion on Castaway Cay sounded like the best one, so I checked online and of course it’s sold out. I realize there’s another fishing excursion on St. Maarten, but I don’t know… we haven’t really heard anything about it and we just had our hearts set on the one at Castaway Cay. So, again… after we board, I’ll keep checking just in case someone cancels.

The cherry on this diabolical and nasty sundae is my work schedule. I am in a state of such agonizing hecticness in my job right now that I can hardly see straight. :sad2: My schedule changes almost daily, and I’m getting to the point where I need to put post-it notes on my bathroom mirror to remind me where I’m due and when. So take these things and what do you get? An extremely frustrated wife. :mad: Which is never a good thing. Again, everything is pretty much hinging on her parents this trip. This may very well be their only vacation in their lives, a once in a lifetime trip, and my wife wants it to be the most awesome and unforgettable experience ever for all of us. So we’re only thinking about them. Truthfully… if it were just us traveling, we wouldn’t care about having the late dinner (that’s the one we prefer ourselves) and we would never have dreamed of going on a fishing excursion either. And it’d be just us so we wouldn’t need connecting rooms.

I’m sure these things seem minor to most people, but these little requests were pretty important to us. Overall, I’m fine with it, but my wife is a bit taken aback by it all, so we’ll see what happens on the ship. I’m not too overly worried. I’m looking at the big picture. Being on that ship for 7 nights, all the island time, and eating, and pool/relaxation time, and eating, and snorkeling, and Castaway Cay… and eating. It’s going to be fabulous! :woohoo:

Overall, there is still an enormous amount of excitement swirling around this vacation. We’re not totally wallowing in a mud pit of self destruction. Heck… we’re still going on a Disney Cruise in 9 days!!

Oh RV! Been there, done that! Oh my, there are moments when you want to send "the family" on a totally different cruise, while you relax alone on the Magic. Don't despair! I don't know how, when, or why, but it will all work out in the end. At least that's what I tell my coworkers, and wife. Coworkers roll their eyes at me:sad2: , while DW just glares:mad: , but low and behold "it all works out in the end":banana: and everyone is happy:laughing: ! Good Luck!

Thank you all so much for all of the words of encouragement. I know that it will be fine. They were just stumbling blocks along cruise planning's road. I tried to hurdle them, but instead got tripped up and fell on my face, but I'm healed now. ;) :)

I have a FULL week of work between now and this Friday. Maybe that's a good thing... keep my mind occupied more than I would rattling around my house wondering what to do with myself. MIL and FIL are due to arrive on Wednesday, then we have O'hana reservations on Friday evening (which, with any luck, will be the subject of the next installment of my report).

Part II: The Babies Know We're Leaving and O'hana Means 'Family'


Hey all! :wave2:

I feel like a gluttonous pig having just come from O'hana at Disney's Polynesian Resort, but I like to think of it as practice for the week to come! I'm stuffed to the gills with turkey and bread pudding, but more on that later...

It's here! :dance3: It's here! :dance3: It's finally here!! :dance3: For some reason, the wait for this cruise has been agonizingly longer than any other. The in-laws arrived on Wednesday afternoon from Kentucky, and we've all just been hanging out. Or rather... they have. I've been working my tail off. But not anymore!! :banana: :banana: :banana:

Things of note since I last checked in with you all:

The Planning
I have to say... my in-laws have got to think that we have completely flipped our lids. All we have done is talk talk talk this cruise to death, talking about the ports and the food and the Celebration Cake, and the shows and the food... nonstop, day in and day out. The same questions have been asked over and over again. The same answers have been given over and over again. The amount of planning that has gone into this vacation has been astronomical and that is something that they, as people that have never gone anywhere in their lives, just can't fathom.

As we were helping them fill out their documents today, I couldn't help but wonder what they were thinking having to fill out forms to go on vacation. Having to produce birth certificates to go on vacation. To be inside their heads this week... oh boy... this is gonna be an adventure for sure.

The Puppies
My puppies are sad. :sad1: They know when something is up, and something is definitely up. Whenever the suitcases come out, my babies eyes fill with a sorrow so soul scathingly pitiful that I can't hardly stand it. Our church friends have agreed to come and take care of the puppies while we're gone so I know that they are going to be very well taken care of. Our friends LOVE to hand out bones!

Also, my in-laws have a dog as well that they have brought with them. Coming here and having one additional dog in the house for the week was an okay alternative than having her boarded back in Kentucky. So she's here too and boy... she DOES NOT like our puppy-sitting friends. We've been doing trial runs where they come over every evening to visit with her and make nice with her, but she really has no part of it except to bark her fool head off for an hour straight! I'm thinking things will get better once we all get out of the picture and leave.

O'hana: A Review
Tonights trip to O'hana was not our first. It was a first for the in-laws but not for us. We go quite frequently as it is one of our Disney favorites. All went well except for the check in process. The Cast Member at the check in was not on top of his game this evening. We had reservations at 5:15pm and arrived at 5:20pm (that pesky I-4 Friday traffic, you know...). He asked for my last name... it was loud, there were many guests around... polynesian songs were being sung quite loudly... he asked for my name again... I told him... he looked in the computer... he had a system glitch... he shut down the compter... I watched over his shoulder... he rebooted... he tried signing into the system... he put in the wrong password... error message... he put in the wrong password... error message... he put in the wrong password... error message... shall I go on? :sad2:

This went on another couple of times... someone else came in and put in their password... he asked for my name again... he couldn't find us... I told him to look under my wife's name... I spelled it four times... he continued to scroll down and down and down when her name begins with a "C"... I could go on but I think you get the point. We were finally given a pager and went to sit. The moment we sat down the pager went off, so at least we didn't have to wait long.

Once we were seated things were fine. If you are a true Disney fan (such as myself) you may know that O'hana has gone through some changes over the last several months with their menu. The way it used to be, there were spinning lazy susans in the middle of each table where they would place a wire rack of salad, shrimp wantons, chicken wings, rice, and veggies (sorry if I forgot anything). You'd snack (or devour, take your pick) on that for awhile and then the servers would start bringing around skewers of turkey, steak, pork, and king prawn shrimp. Then to top it all off a juicy quarter of sliced pinapple (pre-skewered) would come to the table with warm caramel.

Now... there is no lazy susan. Everything is brought to you and placed on your table. There is salad, veggies, chips with dips, chicken wings, peel and eat shrimp in a bowl, and cheesy au gratin potatos (YUM!). NO WANTONS and NO RICE! :sad1: But cheesy au gratin potatos! For the main course, they bring the turkey (THANK GOODNESS!), steak, pork, and polynesian sausage (instead of the king prawn shrimp for they are now on your table in a bowl of marinade). Now for dessert, they bring you bread pudding slathered in vanilla ice cream with warm bananas foster sauce! Still good eating in my opinion! It was a highly enjoyable evening. Perfect had we gotten checked in without issue, but ah well...

So now we're home, I'm full, and the house is in a state of total wreck! I can't see my bed due to it being covered with four (yes four) suitcases. The puppies are going crazy, the daughter refuses to help, we're tired and there is still laundry spinning in the dryer. I NEED to sail away. And I'd better get off of here and wrap this up before my wife's eyes bore any deeper into my soul. How did this post get so long anyway? ;)

So we're heading out at about 9:15am tomorrow morning. I'll take good notes. I'll miss you all (if I remember to). And I'll check in within 12 hours of returning home.

:) My puppies have same reaction when they see our suitcases. We have learned to be sneeky and put all of our clothes and other necessities in the spare bedroom to pack once the puppies are at the sitters. I am SO enjoying your pre-trip report. I want to tell you this. We take my husbands family or my own parents on every cruise. We all have very different lifestyles. His Mom stays up till all hours of the night. My parents go to bed at 9pm. Just remember...you don't have to babysit them. Let them go off and have some adventures. They will really enjoy it. My Mother in law is 76 years old. My parents are mid 50's. We always have a great time. Take a deep breath and relax. It will be great. My husband's Dad had never been on a boat of any kind since WWII and we were pretty nervous. Plus he had never flown in a plane. Plane was fine...And he grabbed a cup of coffee and was dancing a "jig" on the deck of the ship by 7pm while we were leaving the port. Cutest thing I ever saw.
Leonard was not know to be very emotional. So seeing him do this was GREAT!! It will be 3 years tomorrow that he passed away. Taking your wife's parents on this cruise is really great. You will treasure this time with them. We sure do. I know it's a lot of hard work and worry, but it really will be worth it. None of Stephen's sister's got to have this one on one time with them. ( Or see the jig) :) Just remember to take a deep breath. Which itinerary are you going on? Eastern or Western? Take Care!!

I totally agree!!! That's why I want to take this cruise with my mom. She's 75 this year and I will have memories and experiences with her that my other 3 siblings will never have... ok... maybe 2 of them... my sister did take her to Ireland last year.

Uh, well... they did fine I suppose. It wasn't magical like we Disney people experience the magic while on a Disney vacation, but they did okay. They say they had a good time, but I don't really feel that they did. They spent a lot of time in their room and just kinda hung out for the week.
