View Full Version : The Chicago Meet

Patrick IL.
12-21-2001, 08:31 AM
Discon gave me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people. I have done a couple of Chicago meets, but now my "circle" of friends extends nationally and even internationally! My one regret is not spending more time with everyone, there was just so much to do in such a short amount of time.
I would like to invite anyone who can come to a BBQ at our "humble abode" and trust me it is humble, on Saturday July 6th. Of course there are lots of other things to do in Chicago on top of this. A trip in our beautiful City to Navy pier, shopping on Michigan ave, a ton of things, I can post links later for other activities.. It has also came up that we could go up to Great America in Gurnee for a day, great coasters.
So I have clearance from "the tower", I would love to have any and all of you to meet my family and meet up with some great old friends. I might need some help organizing and keeping up with numbers and other filler activities, helpers? Glo, Nancy? More to follow later I am sure. I have some initial commitments from some of my friends from Baaaaassstttaaannn, which I plan to hold them to.
So I do not want to wait a year, I am reminded of my favorite line from a favorite movie Field of Dreams "If you build it they will come" Any one interested?:D

PATRICK!!!!! You know your friends from the BAASTEN area would not miss this for the world. I better be cute and sweet for the next month or so, so I can go.....I'll help you with whatever you want in the planning aspect.....I can not wait!! This will be a lot of fun....DO you know what you are in for??? Does Ellen?

SO if Lousie...heheheheheh ok ok...Louise (MAAAAAAASHA) really is up for the road trip we are there....

I can't wait!!!

LOLOL.. but I would love to see Chicago and this would be the perfect time.. We will plan on a summer vacation there and maybe we will hit a few more spots.. I have to save a week for DisCon though.. Hugs..

I think that my family has been prep'ed for an annual Chicago DISmeet (or two). If the calendar says that we can make it, then I'll be there.

Well...that is our regular camping weekend so I can't commit right now but I'll say maybe we will be there. We are going camping and we could come from the campground but we'd have to leave by 8 to get back before the gates close. So we'll see as it gets closer.

For those of you traveling LONG distances to attend, I highly recommend using Priceline for hotel accommodations, though I'd wait until it gets closer to do so.

glo
12-21-2001, 12:50 PM
Hey Patrick....maybe I can pitch a tent....hmmmm...economical and I am used to camping....who needs Priceline when you can pitch a tent and be where you want to be at early in the morning....lol.

PS. DO not worry Patrick I am j/k. well, maybe I am just a littel bit joking..... ;)

Last time that we visited Chicago for a DISmeet, we used our Disney Club card's "Entertainment" feature. We found a room at a Holiday Inn Express that was $50 a night for our family of four.

Any suggestions on where to camp Patrick?

Wish we could come to this one, especially since it's on my birthday, but I think we'll have to sit out this part of the summer DIS meet tour. :( The vacation budget just can't handle all these meets!

Patrick IL.

:( I am sorry but certainly do understand. Pat I will have to do some research on the camping places- Any one else local have any ideas? I am sure I can find a websight or something- give me a little time.

Hi Pat!

Sounds like fun! I can drive up there again! Hopefully, I can talk Kevin into coming along this time. When he gets home from Iceland, I'll ask him about it.

No, on second thought, I won't wait until he gets home. And, I won't ask, I'll tell him we're going!!

Can't wait to see everyone again, and meet new friends, too!

Camping? Hmmm. I'm familiar with that word, but I'm not sure exactly what it means. ;) :p :D

Actually, I've camped a lot in my time, but I will probably come on the train (if I can swing this meet), and I don't think I'll be able to drag camping supplies with me. I will come and bug you at your campsites (if you tell me where you are. :D )

<font="comic sans ms"> I like taking the train. I took it all the way from Kansas City to Boston last year. You can meet some very interesting people on the train. I met a lot of Amish people since they don't fly. Of course, we also had to stop in the middle of the night somewhere in New England for Federal Marshalls to take a fugitive off the train, but that could happen anywhere. I missed all the excitement because I was in my room (closet). :D A porter told me about it the next day.

glo
12-22-2001, 02:06 PM
Did you run the tent city by her yet?

NancyIL
12-22-2001, 02:12 PM
Glo, in Chicago - you don't need tents. Cardboard boxes work fine! :D

Patrick IL.
12-22-2001, 02:15 PM
LOL true Nancy, nothing like those big refrigerator boxes, can get a whole winter out of those-no glo I did not run "tent city" by her yet. I figured you could call or have marsh call and ask her:D

glo
12-22-2001, 02:34 PM
Sure Patrick I will call and ask her tonight? You guys going to be around?? Er...um...Patrick we talking about the same Marsh we know and love??....lol.....her in a tent? Have you lost your marbles??? I think you need to sit down and relax for a while....rotflmao.....Hey, think of all the great bonding between DISers and your family if we stay in your yard??? hmmmmmm....I think I will definitely ask... :D :)

Patrick IL.
12-22-2001, 02:40 PM
Just showed Ellen the thread- thought that it would be prudent at this point;) Glo, she said she is available to talk this evening- around 8- thats 9 your time:D

Er...um...Patrick we talking about the same Marsh we know and love??....lol.....her in a tent? This I would pay to see:D :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

glo

hey Patrick tell her I will call....I'd love to chat with the woman who puts up with you...lol... I do not like cardboard boxes though...I have a two room tent I use...maybe I can rent the other half to another DISer and help defray cost....rotflol....hmmmmmmmm

This I would pay to see

Patrick you and I together could not come up with enough money to see that happen....lol. Nope I think the national surpluss isn't enough....
 :D ;) :p

Patrick IL.
12-22-2001, 02:53 PM
OK I will tell her to expect your call- I will run the camping idea by Marsha, I bet deep down its something she always wanted to do;)

Towncrier
12-22-2001, 02:56 PM
DS James has a THREE-room tent. Perhaps this could be a money making proposition. I could sleep in one room and rent out the other two. And Sue has a bunch of huge cardboard boxes that she saves from when flowers are delivered to our house. Perhaps I can rent out all three rooms. This is going to be great. :)

NancyIL
12-22-2001, 03:10 PM
Hahaha....I'm sorry I ever brought up the cardboard boxes! :p I'm with Marsha about camping! My idea of roughing it is an Econolodge! :D

glo
12-22-2001, 03:20 PM
Ok first of all...if you get Marsha in a tent for one night I will be your personal slave for the day...Will cut the lawn, take out the trash, and do all the stuff you hate to do at home Patrick. YOu name it and it will be granted...lol

Now, I will talk to Ellen tonight everyone and we shall see what the real boss of the house says...I will report after our meeting :D :D :D :D

Mackey Mouse
12-22-2001, 03:21 PM
ARE YOU TWO CRAZY?????? You expect me to rough it in a tent..Roughing it to me is a Holiday Inn.. Get outta here.. NO WAY!!!! Besides I am staying in the City, I think, and training it out to the suburbs....Does Chicago have a Ritz??

I think you have all lost it. how could a Queen sleep in a cardboard box or a tent?? Puhleeze.. hehehehe

NancyIL
12-22-2001, 03:38 PM
Marsha, there used to be a Ritz-Carlton at Water Tower Place (fancy mall on Michigan Avenue), but it isn't listed on the Ritz's web site any longer. Any Chicagoans know what hotel is there now?

I'm perfectly happy at most Holiday Inns. The one and only Econolodge I stayed at (in Eaton, Ohio) was a DUMP! I love GREAT hotels at CHEAP prices, and that's why I like Priceline! :)

glo
12-22-2001, 03:41 PM
Oh Poor poor Patrick...the queen has spoken.... wiping brow and taking a deep breathe here. Would have had to admit I have never mowed a lawn before...I bet it would have been interesting looking to say the least...

Gee Patrick that was a quick kill.... You couldn't even try to talk her into it? Gee, I thought the cardboard boxes could be made to look like a mini Ritz...what do you think?

Man and what an offer...you could have sat with a beer in your hand while I did all the chores for the meet...of course I would make sure Ellen would got at you for working the guest to death.

TC give me time...I will talk to Ellen tonight.... then I will let you know about our money making scheme... just remember I was there first...lol

I do not think the person who responded was the Marsha we know...Nope no way...Holiday Inn? Nope, no way Jose. Roughing it for her is the Marriot Coutyard...I can not see her at a Holiday Inn. Nancy the Econolodge even less...rotflmao.....

Barb
12-22-2001, 03:48 PM
I'll tent it as long as we can have a campfire and make s'mores. :) :D :) ;)
I'm anxious to hear what Ellen has to say to all this! :D
I do have to draw the line at a cardboard box, though. They don't do too well if it should rain.

Crissup
12-22-2001, 04:05 PM
Patrick,
I'll bet we can fool Glo with an inflatable Marsha in a cardboard box and still get your lawn mowed. LOL!!!

Patrick IL.
12-22-2001, 05:54 PM
Hey I have 6 months to work on Marsh, I bet she would do it for me, I do not ask much :) I was thinking of looking around and borrowing an old used RV- I could park it in the drive way and Marsh could sleep there! People could use the portable toliet in there also! That would win me the bet and help spruce up the neighborhood;) :D I could be in serious trouble after this phone call tonight:p ;) I am not afraid, I am not afraid:rolleyes: :D :D :D

OK, I will concede even to an RV in the driveway, but it can't have a real bathroom has to have the pump type...lol...nope never ever happen. Are you kidding??? I will do the lawn in a bikini and cause a disturbance of the peace..if she does that...omg....

Thanks Nancy....I am glad you took it that way, but I think Crissup was making a short person dig...lol...Oh well... anyway...I know my dates for this Chicago meet. I will be there from Friday July 5th to either Monday July 8th or Tuesday morning July 9th depending on the airfare. I think I will be giving Priceline a try for the hotel...Have always had great luck with it...got the Swan a year ago for $72 a night..... I have a list of the surrounding towns from Patrick that have hotels...will start my research soon....Can you tell I am excited???

NancyIL
12-23-2001, 09:59 AM
A nice long weekend in Chicago will be great, Glo! I've had good luck with airport hotels via Priceline. I've gotten the Doubletree O'Hare Rosemont and the Hilton O'Hare with $30 and $35 bids. Last summer I got a hotel near N. Michigan Ave. (Ambassador West) when Expedia had their hotel price matcher, so there are good deals to be had. Be sure to check out www.biddingfortravel.com first!

I just checked Orbitz, and a non-stop flight on American from Boston to Chicago (July 5-8) is $223...not bad. Of course, you could always try Priceline for airfare, too.

glo
12-23-2001, 10:36 AM
Hey Nancy thanks for the great info...what rating did you use for the hotels? I would like to be at the $50 range or so. Hoping I can get something good. May need to rent a car so not to be an imposition...have to figure this all out.

glo

Hey Nancy!!!
I just thought I would let you know. I pricelined it and got the Embassy Suites in Oakbrook, which I was told was only a few minutes away...for $36 a night. The lowest rate on their site is $98.10 with a AAA discount. I am psyhed!!!! Next I have to start looking for flights...I think I will still try to do better than $220.

NancyIL
12-23-2001, 02:03 PM
Woohoo, Glo! I LOVE a Priceline bargain!!! If you decide to go the Priceline route for airfare, be sure to check Hotwire first (at www.hotwire.com ). Priceline will probably beat Hotwire's airfare. Be sure to click on Bonus Money Opportunitues at the Bidding for Travel site - to get $25 (I think) bonus money added to your airfare bid.

As for car rental - I'd go ahead and reserve something now to get a good rate. (I wouldn't try Priceline until you're POSITIVE you'll need a car.) I imagine the CTA has some sort of public transportation between Oakbrook and Downtown, right, Pat???

Now that I know you'll be in Oakbrook - I might give Priceline another try. I bid for the O'Hare zone, but my bids were rejected.

NancyIL
12-23-2001, 02:49 PM
I just bid for a 3-star hotel in Oakbrook, and got the Embassy Suites, too!!!! ;) I'll just be there on July 6th for 1 night. I'll have my mini-van, so you won't need to rent a car for THAT day!

glo

Embassy Suites is a great place! We had one of Erins overnight birthday parties there- she had 4 guests, and me and Ellen- Two room suites, indoor pool, a free cocktail hour and free breakfast- back several years ago it was $100 a night. Its about 10 mins from my house :)

I'll have my camera. It still needs to be broken in. I only took 2,000 photos this last trip to WDW. LOL!!

By the way, you can see my photos at http://disney.crissup.com/

Hi there!

Most of you don't know me, but I was told about this meet by a little bird, and since a few people that I want to meet seem to be attending, may I come by too? I promise to be nice and polite, you probably won't even know I am there, since I am such a quiet person.:D

Just wondering, I think I read that this meet will be in Berkely? I am coming from I-88, in the Aurora area. What would be the best way to get to Patrick's house? Will there be children attending? And what's this I hear about bikinis? Trust me, you don't want me in a bikini, so hopefully that is optional.:p

And just to reiterate, I am very nice, and I promise I don't bite (hard).

Katalin,
Patrick is in the Oakbrook area, so you'll just zoom right across I-88. You gotta be there too, no excuses. Bring John.

Patrick, as much as I'd love to join you, I'll be in WDW at that time. Bummer right? :) Seriously, maybe during the next Chicago meet I'll be able to make it. See you then!

I would like to come also but will have to see what the plans are for that time of the summer. The next day is DS' birthday - he'll be 21 and he now lives in NC. Not sure if he's going to want me to drive down for that big day or not. But if I can find a way, I'll be there.

I mentioned to Bill about going to Chicago in July, and he just smiled. He also said that "some of us have to work". So, don't know if I'm coming alone or not. I don't have a room yet, but hope to work on all that this week. Looking forward to seeing you all again and meeting some new DIS friends, too!

I mentioned to DH that he should schedule somthing in Chicago about then. He says the project he's on right now could entail multiple trips so we'll keep our fingers crossed and see if he can work it out for an extended visit.

This way we get to stay at some of the nice downtown hotels :D
