Just got the bill for our car repairs... £1000 (plus just spent £600 on it). It needs new driveshafts at £450 each plus £100 on bearings.

The car is prob worth less than £1300, what should I do, fix it or buy a new one?

HELP!

No Disney holiday for me anymore.

Poor you.

Personally if the car was worth only £1300 then I wouldn't be spending £1000 on it.

i agree with flo.....spend the money on another car :guilty: what a shocker:scared1:

oh Claire, nightmare, I agree with Flo and would think about replacing it

That's a difficult one. Is there much else likely to wrong in the near future?

It's easy to say put the money towards a new car but are you willing and able to spend more on another car? I doubt if you could replace the car for £1300 but I know what a money pit cars can be once they start going wrong.

So I haven't really helped you have I?

Libby

PS Do you trust your garage or is it worth getting a second opinion on what work needs doing?

Chilly

Nothing else should go wrong in the future (I think/hope). We are going to get a second opinion and check that nothing else will go wrong.

We couldn't really afford to buy anything decent unless be buy it on finance.

carolfoy

really difficult one, I'm sure I'd just shop around and see if anyone can get the work done a bit cheaper or if you can spread the cost out over years.

Oh what an nightmare Claire, I hope it works out cheaper if you get a 2nd opinion, sorry to hear that you've had to cancel your holiday

Don't know much about cars but thought they only had one drive shaft?

Claire ;)

So sorry Claire, you must be very upset:grouphug: I think a 2nd opinion is a really good idea, i was going to say go for the new car, but its not worth paying it off for years is it?Sending big hugs,

Claire ;)

All front-wheel drive cars have one shaft for each wheel, therefore 2 front wheels=2 driveshafts. How old is this car? I'm guessing if it's only valued at £1300 it's reasonably old and that in turn means that there's every likelihood that more will go wrong in the (near) future. It might be worth considering changing for something even just a couple of years younger, but it's hard to say without more detail about your car. :confused3

We've just had a bill for £500 and I thought that was bad! Hope you get it sorted, what make is your car?

Claire try phoning around a few scrap yards. You could find a low mileage write off and pick the parts up at a fraction of the price of new.
There is a one in Vigo Lane Yateley ( not to far from you) that strips cars and has the parts off the shelf so you don't have to worry about stripping off of a car in the yard.:thumbsup2

If you want to PM me some more details I'll ask my workshop manager to let you know how much it should cost.

Hope this helps

Tony

Thanks Tony I've sent you a PM.

For everyone else it is a Hyundai Accent, 1.3, 5 door hatchback, X Reg bought new in Jan 2001 making it 6 years old.

The service said everything else should last for another 50000 miles or something along those lines.

id first of all get a second opinion if youre using a main dealer then try some one cheaper what make of car is it ? but dont spend that sort of money to fix a car worth that much but also beware is the person youve just gave 600 in repais the same one thats just qouted the 100 if so i smell a rat

DBF has taken it to a local garage that was recommended. They said it is unlikely to be the drive shaft and both don't normally go at once and that it is more likely to be the new brake pads/discs that the other garage has just fitted!

Fingers croossed it will now cost a lot less and Disney will be back on!

No it started before that happened!

The garage couldn't get it to make the noise last night so think it is not a major problem and could be a bearing. They have kept it overnight and will look at it again this morning.

Thanks everyone for keeping your fingers crossed.

well that's better news Claire, but how scarey that the other garage were going to charge you thousands over the odds - I would seriously think about reporting them to trading standards before someone else gets caught out.

My mum had her previous car serviced regularly by the main dealer she bought it from. When she stopped using them (they moved so a location "not on her route") she got a local mobile mechanic in - he said some of the parts had not been changed for YEARS, if ever:scared1: (filters etc.) yet she had been paying for them to be changed every service.

caveat emptor! A six-year car should still be good for a few more years - i thought you were going to say 16 years!

Chilly

Yes I am def thinking about complaining. I might write to Watchdog as well.

So everyone be careful when taking your car to...

....KWIK FIT!!!

KWIK FIT!!!

I would drive out of my way to avoid them.

Had a bad experience years ago with them and have never used them since.

ask the new garage for a written report and send a copy with a c.c. to the trading standards and a solicitor, stating you were grossly misled. I bet you'll get the work done for free

I can't decide when to go. I think my fav idea is to go on Dec 27th for 2 weeks. But other times appeal as well like Sept/Oct for MNSSHP or Jan for price and Pirates & Princess party.
