had bloodtests done a week ago - spoke w/nurse who said doc is sending me a prescription and lab slip to be retested after taking the meds for 2 months
My total # was 187, good cholesterol 56 - I thought total needed to be under 200 and good # btwn 45-60? My father died from heart disease, older brother has had a bypass

I just started on Lipitor in Dec but mine was at 259 when I went on. IN one month I went down to 169. Are you sure that the 187 was right? Maybe they are being more cautious since there have been family problems in the past.

My DH is a bypass patient and what we've been hearing is that the numbers desired are more like 100 with good/bad ratios in the right place. With family history, perhaps your doc is looking at making the numbers closer to this. Ask questions of the medical staff/doc if you don't understand. You need to know.
Good luck with it all.

I am at the borderline with my cholesterol. The beginning of this month I was at 200. My bad cholesterol is at 133 which should be less than 100. A couple of years ago my doc put me on lipitor and it did not make my cholesterol go down. I stopped taking because it did not agree with me at all. I was able to lower my cholesterol with excercise and diet changes. I also took my omega 3-6 vitamins. I did pretty well, but then I got married and I got really really lazy. So, I am back where I started a couple of years ago and working hard to get it back down again.
