I am leaving in about 5-10 minutes to take photos of the launch tonight... I saw this photo online...

And I would LOVE to take something similar, my camera has manual settings, any idea on what I would use for this. Thanks!!

ETA: Hopefully without the people in the view but I'm talking about the whole launch trail.

Tripod, DEFINATELY, and it looks like about a 5 second, maybe longer shutter speed.

I've got the tripod packed and ready to go, I'm pretty excited to try it out, although I know I've got one shot...lol! It's not like I can say, ok back to the launch pad, let's try this again...;o)

Any idea on the other settings, I can adjust the aperature, shutter speed, um...ISO.

If it's not to late...
I would use ISO 200, shutter priority and try for a 6 second shot. I don't know what kind of camera you have. IF you have a dSLR, then put it in manual, set shutter to Bulb, Aperture to f/8 and when the shuttle launches fire the shutter, then close the shutter when you think you've got a long enough trail. Use a remote shutter release or wire shutter release to avoid camera shake. Hopefully it will be fairly dark, otherwise settins will have to be different and you may need a dark filter.
Good luck.

What a beautiful launch! A bit chilly outside but so worth it, I'll post the photos after I've uploaded them, which I'm doing now.

Due to the traffic I stuck around and about 8pm tonight I set up the tripod and opened up the shutter for a 32 second shot of the pier. I really like how it turned out.

Thanks Kelly, I am pretty excited about what I got with my simple camera. Compared to most of the cameras out there yesterday, they were huge, costing $1,000's of dollars easily.

That's my photo you started this thread with :-) You could have just emailed me. It came up in a search.
Five seconds...try five minutes for that shot. They aren't THAT fast.
You need a camera, for future reference, that has a bulb or timer setting and you can keep open for several minutes. You also need a very wide angle lens (17mm or wider on a 35mm film camera).

2angels, gorgeous photos. If I have any other comments, it's that the first one looks crooked. It probably is straight, but something about the jetty makes it look like the camera is on an angle to the right.

See, as it's been said before, it's about the photographer behind the camera! Great job.

That is a beautiful shot! I agree that if you straighten out the photo based on the jetty, it would be absolutely perfect.
Great Job! :thumbsup2

Ben, that is a beautiful shot! Are you coming to the next launch or the shuttle, hopefully in June? I'm working with only a Kodak Z760 Point and Shot...lol. Hope it was ok that I posted the photo here, if not just let me know.
I agree I need to tilt the photos, sadly my PS trail has run out any know of a good program I can use to fix them? I fixed them at one point but can't find the files now. =o(

Ben, was looking at your gallery and all I can say is "WOW", those are gorgeous shots! Stunning! I was able to go to the press site once back in JHS when our class was the first ever JHS to cover a launch from the press site but of course working with a disposable camera my pictures look nothing like yours...lol. This was more than 10 years ago...lol.
Awesome work!

2angels, I use Google's Picasa to straighten my photos. It's a free download.

I agree with the recommendation for Picasa2. The Picasa straighten tool is the easiest to use of any I have seen - and I need simple!

Thanks for your comments. It's no problem, next time just provide a link I guess.
I will be there for all upcoming launches, I wouldn't miss the shuttle. If you got to go to the press site you are very lucky. Don't forget that experience.
Sure if you need any more advice just ask.
