Okay DVC, how about stocking some GOOD beer at the DVC commissaries??

I mean, Bud and Heineken are, well,... okay, but we really need some quality American brew....

Oh my! Did I hear somebody say "Sam Adams"?

I like my beer while on vacation, and the whole Budweiser thing is essentially just carbonated water with a bit of food coloring. Heiny is one step above that, but still week.
We need some real, robust beer that actually has flavor.
I do NOT want to leave Disney/DVC to go to the grocery store in order to purchase quality beer.

Would anyone else like to see better beer (ahem... Sam Adams) in the DVC commissaries?? :drinking1

I'm not sure if they still have it but i think SSR has the Old Saratoga Lager. It is good and based on your Sam Adams comments, I'd think you'd like it.

Other than that I agree completely. Bud..... come on with that stuff.

Perhaps my post was confusing, but I was trying to say that Sam Adams is a great, high quality beer. I really wish the Disney/DVC resorts would stock it in the gift shop coolers.
If not Sam, than another quality brew would do. I just don't care much for carbonated water with yellow food coloring. :teeth:

a rotating selection of craft beers from every state in the nation. Where I live we have literally dozens of pubs that brew their own. They are very good, and almost always better than any of the national brands, including...gulp...Sam Adams(DON"T HIT ME!!).

While I also enjoy Sam Adams, there are just too many choices of brands and styles out there to be locked into a select few megabrands.

BTW, Bud=headache after only one, for me at least. I think it is the rice.

Kindest regards,

Yes, I've had the Saratoga beer and thought it was good. When I had it, I was at the pool bar. Was it available in the gift shop? If so, that's a step in the right direction (not to mention a big plus for SSR!).

Ahhhh.......this is MY kind of thread. I, too, think DVC should improve the quality of beer they offer at the resorts. The heiny is.....ok.....and I don't even touch anything else.

The Safari Amber they brew at AK would taste great back in my DVC room at night (or afternoon). Maybe they could bottle it?

Sam Adams isn't great (IMHO) but it sure beats the Heiny and anything else they offer. I know you can get Yuengling at a few of the pool bars, so maybe they could offer that? Just theorizing......

I second the call for Yuengling.

I'm sitting here in Chandler, AZ enjoying the West Coast version of that beer - Dos Equis Amber. A good 'Vienna Style' lager in the DVC markets would go a long way toward establishing good-will among the beer loving ownership.

Barring that, Crew's Cup does have have some decent beer options and probably contribtes to BCV's outrageous resale pricing.

Luckily, we drive and come stocked with our own stash. If we run out, then we drive to the nearest Publix and get more.

I will pay WDW prices for some of the draft beer in the World Showcase, but other than that, we take a "resort break" and head back to the room for a while. Sam, Bud, microbrew... I still have trouble paying that much for a six-pack.

If you stay at BWV or BCV, you could probably hike over to the gas station. They have somewhat more of a selection (not really, but at least you can branch out from Bud) and much better prices. I think some of the grocery delivery places will deliver beer if you call and ask, as well.

Maistre Gracey, I too enjoy a quality beer. In my attempts to find one, I've discovered some strange liquor license issues. For instance, you can get a Bass or Guinness at the Great Britain pavillion in EPCOT, but you can't carry one with you through the international gateway onto the boardwalk. At least I was stopped and told I had to finish my beer in the park. Guinness is not for chugging. Likewise, Big River Brewing has some nice craft brews, but you can only drink them in their restaurant. You can't take one to sip on the boardwalk. When I asked the manager why, he said, "Our liquor license doesn't talk to Disney's license." Anyway, I agree with you, the situation could be improved.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to drive to WDW so I usually bring my own. It is hard for me to plunk down the coin that the Disney stores want for one brew (remember this is beer not some vintage high dollar wine). Currently drinking Warsteiner but usually vary brands and try new stuff till I find a new gem. As I get older, I am finding that my taste is starting to diminish somewhat so I'm tending towards more robust brews.

YES, once went to corp. training with a bunch of Australians, at the bar later that night there was a Foster's poster "Foster Australian for Beer" thier comment was "Fosters Australian for crap beer we sell to Americans".
I'm a Guinness drinker lots of people hate it so I guess it's all good if it's what you enjoy. Also like Yuengling Lager, once considered swill now it's right up therewith the premiums. Amazing what a little marketing can do.

Good beer is subjective, it should be good be that _____your name, likes.

I for one love Samuel Smith's oatmeal stout. I am very picky about my beer and it has to be darker than molasses and about as thick without a bitter ending.

I love stouts but I have a hard time finding them here.

Now for more interesting information. Before I hit the moose and took it to my head, I hated beer! I never drank it and despised the taste. Now, I drink heavy dark stouts and love it.

Weird??

Count me in for maybe Blue Moon, a good Heffeweizen--even Killians for goodness sake. Or Smithwicks?? Or maybe a Lancaster Strawberry Wheat--a fine beer!!
Funny about Yungling---here in Pa. it's at every biker bar, VFW hall, and roadside restaurant in the state. You cannot escape it!! But seems to have picked up quite a following outside Pa. Not a bad beer to be sure, but--
The standard "Sam" is a bit too bitter for my taste--but their Octoberfest and Winter Lager are pretty good.
Maybe I can convince the place we have in Hanover Pa. to open up in WDW--Kclingers it's called--40 rotating drafts and 620 different bottle selections!!

We talk--but it's all a dream, I'm afraid.

fishermouse, now I like me some Guinness. But I recently moved to Maryland, and I can not understand this love for Yuengling. Before I knew anything about it, I had a glass on tap. Well-perhaps not THAT bad!!

Here's another beer rant (while we're on the subject). Just last night went to a nice restaurant in Timonium , Md (Michaels. Great crabcakes!!) Wine list printed-by the glass, bottle. But not a word on the menu about beer. I ask the server what's on draft--the answer was the usual-- Bud, Miller Light, Coors--then she stopped, looked at the ceiling and says-"and some others".
Well I should hope so.
But you see the point--lots of times beer isn't listed anywhere on the menu and if you need to ask the server, good chance they won't even know.

The regular Yuengling is pretty bad the lager is not bad (for american beer) If we're going to get right down to it anything not made in Ireland or Germany is just OK at best. This ought to start a war! But for parties and sharing Yuengling will do, at $30 -$40 a case I keep the good stuff for myself. Then again I keep Segrams on the bar and the 12 year old Jamesons for myself. Present company excluded, most people don't know good alcohol, and drink way to fast and irresponsibly to enjoy quality. I'm not sure if you're serious or kidding, but if you're serious, you're really missing the boat when it comes to US made craft beer, Belgian ales and Czech pilsners (just to name a few).

As for Yuengling, they're done a great job with marketing, but it's not even the best lager made in PA. Victory, Penn Brewery and Stoudt's make lagers which are much better, and true to the style, than Yuengling.

I think WDW is really missing the boat when it comes to what they could do with the beer and food selections in the American pavillion at Epcot WS. There are lots of excellent regional Amercian specialties (think about it-- lobster rolls, cheesesteaks, crabcakes, gumbo, Chicago hot dogs, TexMex, just to name a few) and great local/regional American beers to go along with them.

With all this talk about Yuengling, I am surprised no one has mentioned their Porter. It's pretty good, but hard to find. Yuengling Lager is better than swill, but no Sam Smith's ya know. It's nice to get down there at WDW, because I no longer live in Philly and it is a taste of home when I go to Florida.

As for the beer selection, I ranted on this after my trip this past January. The selection in the gift shops is horrible. When I bought DVC in 2001, I would go and grab a Bass($3.00 I think) and sit next to the fireplace outcove on the 2nd floor in the WL. I loved doing that. Now, fugghetaboutit! And I want to rip up those little blue menus that are the same in every stinken restaurant and bar at WDW. Why should the drinks be the same at Tambu Lounge, Martha's Vineyard, Victoria Falls, Meizner's, Territory Lounge, AND ESPN? C'mon.

I say, "Better beer selection at WDW. Man Law?"

Blue Moon is a Coors product. Based upon the beers that are sold in WDW, my guess is that at least for the domestics, WDW's deal is with Anheuser Busch.

Brown Derby still has La Fin du Monde along with Trois Pistoles - these two along with Maudite (only at Cellier) can't be beat.

We usually stop at the ABC's on 535 right from the Airport and stock up. It's weird drinking some belgian triple/quad or a hefewiezen out of a big red plastic cup by the pool instead of the proper glassware but it works I guess...and some of the belgians at ABC are cheaper than any place I've found in NY/CT.

Someone mentioned Safari Amber - it's actually Michelob Amber Bock renamed.

Now, here are the list of beers I wished I could buy at WDW:

* Stone Brewing Arrogant *******
* Bell's Hop Slam
* Great Lakes Brewing Nosferatu
* Alaskan Brewing Smoked Porter (it is a wish list, right?)
* Green Flash IPA

Just a start.....

Now you're talking!! :thumbsup2

I'd have to add a few locals (Victory and Dogfish Head) to the list. :)

What about those grocery delivery services? Will they deliver beer? I'm thinking they can't, but if they can do they have a better selection?

MG

Gardengrocer brought us some Yeungling Black and Tan when I wrote them a request in the notes at the end of the ordering process. We can't get Yuengling in Minnesota, so I was really glad that they were able to pick that up for us. I didn't know until we got there whether it would be in the order or not, though.

In Dec we went to Goodings and they had a pretty big selection of beers. Not a ton of foriegn ones though. As long as I was able to get Yuengling I was happy.

Man, if I wasn't consumed with and blinded by the SSR threads, I would have been all over this thread! Not to mention, if someone had pointed out SSR served a quality brew, that would have been a hugely compelling argument for me!!!

I always want my Guinness! I would also love to see Smithwicks, I fell in love with that brew when we visited Ireland a few ago before it was being imported! I was psyched the first time I saw it here. I am also partial to Long Trail, Anchor Steam, and Magic Hat #9 and Blind Faith.

Of course, I still prefer my own brews, and have shipped them down ahead of me on a few occasions!

Unfortunately, the evil empire which is Budweiser I'm sure has too strong a contract with WDW for us to see any substantial variety of beer, other than the occasional brew that compliments a theme.

I would like to throw a Belgium selection, Chimay Grand Reserve.

My personal favorite.

I can't even begin to imagine what they would charge for that. They already knock your socks off for everything else.

OK, my favorite American brews are almost always from New England, which replicates the British style the most authetically. Here's the best if you haven't had them before....

Old Thumper (From Shipyard)
Sea Dog's India Pale Ale
Geary's Summer Ale (not sweet like most Summer brews can be)
Fisherman's Brew (small, tough to find, but just awesome!)

Haven't seen anyone mention the new Irish Pub in DTD - anyone been there? What's their selection like?

It's pretty good, at least by WDW standards. They have a # of drafts, and also sampler "flights" that you can get. The one I got had Stella, Boddingtons, Smithwicks, and Tucher heffeweizen.

And on the subject of belgians.. I just got a case of "The Best of Belgium"--which aside from Stella, had Leffe Blond and Hoegaarden. The latter tasting somewhat like Blue Moon.

You know, I started thinking...

Perhaps the reason the DVC stores don't carry the premium brews is that they only carry beer in cans.
Most premium beers are bottled, and I'm sure they don't want glass in the pool area and such.

Can anyone think of a beer that is sold in glass bottles at the resort stores?

Also, just what affect do those plastic bottles have on beer? I'm personally not a fan of beer in a can.

Old Saratoga ale @ SSR. It came in a glass bottle last time I was there.

Only place I've ever seen Beer in the plastic bottles is at a ball park. I was Hot and the beer was cold so I did not notice a difference. I agree about cans only get them if I have no choice.

Boy, there would be some drunk a-- people stumbling around WDW if that was available. Good, but potent! Did a pub crawl in NYC years ago and hold those Belgian monks personally responsible for not being able to remember half the night, waking up in a hotel lobby, and not being able to move off the bathroom floor until 3pm the next day......

Wintergreen: I got it at in Baltimore, at Wells Discount Liquors (They have a large beer selection).
If this helps, it's Imported by INBEV USA, Norwalk Conn.

And it can be obtained online here:

The store is in Blacksburg Va.

To answer an earlier question:

Better beer at DVC: Man(kind) law (gender equity in beer is a good thing).

A few other observations:
-when they named it Heiny, they weren't kidding. Who knew a name could be so literal.
-there is a good can beer -- Guiness. But that does require a glass.
-I think they should stock the king of all American beers:

After reading this thread I had to have a beer, and I'm a wine drinker. So my DH and I went to our local Bennigans for dinner and he had Smithwicks and I had a Sam Adams Winter Lager. It was good :thumbsup2 . In disney my DH likes Boddingtons, Anchor Steam, Bass and some German beer I can't remember. We usually drive or rent a car and always buy beer offsite. It would be great if they offered better beer at DVC, would save a trip.
Uncleromulus, have you ever tried Red Brick Station at White Marsh? We like the Avenue Ale there.:) It is a bit of a hike for you from Glen Rock though.

Been there several times! M-in-law lives near Belair Rd. and the beltway, so we're in that area often. Can recall years back when I lived in Parkville and had some friends in what was once "old" Whitemarsh. Back then, the mall, the Avenue--NONE of it was there!! Just fields ,farms and even some marshland.

Also like DuClaw, off RT 24 near Belair. They haven't been open tho since the fire. They had a special heffeweizen there once--slightly flavored with bannana and clove. Outststanding!!!

That sounds interesting! We have been to DuClaw at Arundel Mills but not in Belair.
