What do airlines use for ID for children. Our neice doesn't have picture ID, just a birth certificate. Is that enough ID? Both her parents will be there for the flight. This got me thinking last night.

If you're flying out of Canada to the US, everyone needs a passport -- infants and children included. Hopefully, they have enough time to apply for her.

FYI: children's passports last 3 yrs, not 5 yrs like adults. They are slightly less expensive.

For the airlines I don't think we were asked for anything for the kids...we flew domestically on Continental (from one US airport to another US airport), having driven across the border. At the land border we used their birth certs; for now you don't need photo id for kids that way. If you are flying from Canada though, you'll need that passport of course.

We are driving to Buffalo and flying to MCO from there. We were told to take their original birth certificates and a notarized consent letter from their parents.

As for the expiry date of the passports for kids, it depends on their age. My kids passports are good for 5 years ... they were 4 & 7 when we got them. I think it might be for kids under 3 that they are only good for 3yrs.

If flying out of the USA, security don't even want to look at ID for kids. I've handed them all 4 passports, and they hand them right back and insist that I only give them the adult ones. :confused3

You're absolutely right. I was thinking to when I last did my DDs. They are cheaper though. Age 3-15 is $37, under 3 is $22. Here's the link to the child application form:

I was pretty darned excited a couple of years ago when I had figured it would cost me 4x$87 and then it didn't 'cause the kids were cheaper! :cool1:
