Here are some of my thoughts, I hope this helps!
Pros:
- Boat directly to MK from the FW marina
- Full kitchen in the cabins with a grill outside
- QUIET! I loved waking up to birds and not the guests in the next hotel room
- With a 3 year old, they will love all of the wildlife. While I have read that the peacocks are no longer there, there still are lizards, rabbits, and once in a while an armadillo!
- The cabins are more roomy then hotel rooms. If your little one needs a nap, you can easily put him down, while the adults either go outside on the deck, or simply take a load off at watch some Disney TV
CONS:
- I haven't been there for several years, but the bus system used to be sort of confusing. We would "get it" by about the 3rd day, but can be frustrating at first.
- The pools don't have theme's to them, but if you're like me, you just want to swim and don't care if the pool is shaped like Mickey or something.
I could go on and on, I hope this gives you some help. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll answer them as best I can!

Of all the resorts we've stayed at, the cabins are my favorite.
It's quiet, more room, everyone speaks English, I could go on and on.
I've never had a bad experience there. You could stay at the campground the whole trip and not get bored. Activities every day at the pool for the kids, movies with chip n dale every night by a campfire. Love it.
Just remember what color bus you need to take to get back to your loop and it's not too confusing. The bus drivers are always very helpful, just ask.

I agree with all the pros and have to disagree with one of the Cons - in reference to bus service. We just got back and even though we rented a golf cart the bus service is pretty easy to figure out and can be figured out before even getting to Ft Wilderness with a little planning. There are 3 internal bus routes. And there are plenty of buses running each internal route. You just have to remember the Purple route runs through the cabin area (there are about 4 stops by the cabins and 2 stops for the campground area with one of those being for the group camping and if no one is staying there I am not sure if they even stop) and then there is stop at either end - one at the Outpost bus stop and and one at the Settlement bus stop. The Orange route goes through the middle of Ft Wilderness from the Outpost bus stop to the Settlement bus stop with a stop in between at the Medows trading post which is the gift/grocery shop and also over there is a pool and the bike barn where you can rent bikes, golf carts, canoes, etc. And then there is the Yellow route which goes from the Outpost bus stop to the Settlement bus stop and passes through the campground section of the resort in between.
There are 2 TV's so you can put your little one down to sleep in the bedroom and be out in the living room and watching TV or out on the deck taking in the nature. Another nice thing is to have a full kitchen - it was nice knowing we didn't have to worry about if we didn't get food before we got back to the room and everything is closed because we had stuff to make in the cabin. Also there is a bbq grill at each cabin so you can have a nice bbq hamburger or whatever else you can bbq and spend a lot less for food than a normal Disney trip. Another thing I like about the cabins is that each one is your own unit - no sharing walls/floors with someone else. There are also horses there to see - in the front by the Outpost bus stop they have horses that can be taken on trail rides and then down by the Settlement area there is a few animals left at the Petting farm - then you can also wonder around the barn that houses the horses that pull the Main Street trolly over at MK. So I am sure you son will like that. All in all it is a much nicer experience than the hussle and bussle at both CSR and Pop. And you are in the MK area so its a nice peaceful boat ride to the MK and you don't have to worry about the buses.

I have never stayed in a cabin but I am familiar with the campground. Something that occured to my wife and I is with a cabin, assuming you have driven a car to DW, you park right beside your room! As a resort guest you get free parking at all the attractions and we found it easier to take our truck (we pulled our TT to FW) when going anywhere but the MK (the boat is definately easier to the MK). The traffic control is so excellent at DW and since you are already within DW property the routes you take never mix with those coming from off property. Basically you follow the DW busses. The routes are well marked and it is near impossible to get lost. When you park at Epcot or AK or MGM a tram will pick you up and drop you closer to the gate than where the busses would have. You are guaranteed a seat on the way home and you don't spend the time waiting for busses that can occur if you leave the park at closing. You then drive right into FW, right up to your cabin or RV, carry the kids (now sleeping) to there beds and collapse into yours while everyone else is transferring from the Ak/MGM/Epcot bus to the purple/orange/yellow/whatever bus and then walking from that stop (usually at the front of your loop if you're lucky) to your cabin.
