Ever wonder how that all these people around you seem to be getting the guys/girls even though you don't think they are that attractive or even really that smart...or come to think about it, they don't have half the qualities you think you have or at least what a person of the opposite sex might be interested in? Ever wonder how you don't get half as many guys/girls as the person you always considered "below" you on the social scale or at least not as attractive as you does? Well...sometimes it isn't a matter of how "attractive" a person is...sometimes it's body language. There are ways guys and girls can pick up on who is available and who isn't and they, themselves, instinctively know how to show they are "interested" and also available. They may not be the catalog image and stereotype of the type of people who "catch" dates, but they probably naturally know how to detect and display this type of body language. Consider this:

The type of walk a female might display could "tell" a male that she is "leading-on". Or, her intentions might be totally off key. But the signals are still there. The "rolling" hips when walking might "lead" a guy on.

When talking to a guy, a girl who rubs her legs might tell him that she is available.

A guy who stands leaning against a wall or something like that with his hips slightly out and thumbs in pockets while resting hands on hips might lead a girl on just as the girl "walk" senario works. While either may or may not intend it to be a "lead", often times it attracts the other gender on and sometimes sends the wrong signals...those signals being that the person is available and interested or looking.

And you know what? Body language is involved with tons more than just the "intimate" aspect. You can tell a lot about a person's personality just by the way they present themselves.

Consider these observations: (I found this list online. I added some words to it, but for the most part, the following list comes from a website lol)

Walking briskly or erect could mean that a person is confident.

Standing with hands on hips could mean readiness or aggression.

Sitting with legs crossed, foot kicking slightly could mean Boredom

Sitting, legs apart could mean Open or relaxed

Arms crossed on chest could mean Defensiveness

Walking with hands in pockets, shoulders hunched could mean Dejection

Hand to cheek could mean Evaluation or thinking

Touching, slightly rubbing nose could mean Rejection or doubt or lying

Rubbing the eye could mean Doubt or disbelief

Hands clasped behind back could mean Anger or frustration or apprehension

Locked ankles could mean Apprehension

Head resting in hand, eyes downcast could mean Boredom

Rubbing hands could mean Anticipation

Sitting with hands clasped behind head, legs crossed could mean Confidence or superiority

Open palm could mean Sincerity or openness or innocence

Pinching bridge of nose, eyes closed could mean Negative evaluation

Tapping or drumming fingers could mean Impatience

Steepling fingers could mean Authoritative

Patting/fondling hair could mean Lack of self-confidence; insecurity

Tilted head could mean Interest

Stroking chin could mean Trying to make a decision

Looking down, face turned away could mean Disbelief

Biting nails Insecurity, nervousness

Pulling or tugging at ear could mean Indecision

A lot of the time, body language is done unconsciously rather than consciously. People use it to detect lies and that sort of thing also.

What do you guys think?

Wow. I never thought about it like that.

*Takes note to stop crossing arms, and foot tapping.*

I think that is intereseting. When I'm with people I don't know my body language is low slef-confident and stand offish. However, when I'm with people I know I am confident and flirty.
I can tell sometimes what people are feeling by their body language. I have to know the person while thought. With most of my friends I understand them and some people I don't know that well.
I think its very hard to tell boys body language sometimes.

weird... i cross my arms alot, i mainly walk with hands in pockets+shoulders hunched (though that might be because i have a heavy bag to carry around school) and when reading that i was doing signs of boredom :p

The whole guy with hands in his pockets thing.
I'm not a guy. But I do it all the time.
That's an odd way to look at body language.

I know. I always put my thumbs in my pockets. Though, from what I read, the way the hips are is the biggest lead off but yeah...I didn't exactly get into detail. Let your imaginations run wild rofl. Then, with hand resting on hips, they generally point somewhere...another detail I sort of left out haha. But apparently these motions send some girls a "signal". Like I said, it sometimes means nothing, but other times it could.

Then you must be a very confident person. :goodvibes

I always twirl my hair lol. I guess I have low self-confidence lol. I wouldn't doubt it heh. Though, my eyes are ALWAYS at a downcast, but I find that it's because I am constantly day-dreaming. heh, I guess school bores me often lol. Hey! Now that I think about it, in my most amusing classes I never daydream lol. It's all making sense to me now...

I've been finding myself looking down a lot. Then again, I only paid attention within the past few weeks. The past few months have been hard for me. I went through a lot emotionally, and I practically had no self - confidence whatsoever. Seriously.

But I'm building that back up.

I think you can see what a person is feeling, all based on their body language. I also think people can interpret it in different ways.

IDK alot of the things you said on the list didn;t surprise me too much, some of the confidence, boredum, self conscious ones for some reason just made complete sense to me. Some seem to be a lil out there likeOpen palm could mean Sincerity or openness or innocence
but others were like yah, that makes sense to me, when I'm bored I do those things etc. without even realizing it. Definatly unconscious is my p.o.v

i walk very fast. and people usually stare. it used to bother me. but it doesn't anymore.

arm folded for me means i'm just being very unpatient. watch out.

otherwise i'm a very open person. don't judge me on my body language.

most people in my grade don't though. which is good.

I cross my arms all the time, it just comes natural. :p

And the hands in pockets, whenever I walk, I need my hands in my pockets. No matter if it is my coat pocket, or my jeans pocket. :p

Walking briskly or erect: I have a fast stride.

Standing with hands on hips: sometimes putting pressure on the muscles on my sides alleviates pain. thats the only time I do that.

Sitting with legs crossed, foot kicking slightly: I do this all the time. Its a nervous habit. It does not mean boredom, with me.

Sitting, legs apart could mean: usually I have one elbow on each knee and my chin on my hands or my head in my hands.

Arms crossed on chest could mean: I naturally do this. Its an insecurity thing.

Walking with hands in pockets, shoulders hunched: I'm more comfortable this way. I have long arms. I like pockets. It doesn't mean dejection.

Hand to cheek could mean: I'm really freaking bored.

Touching, slightly rubbing nose could mean: once again, a nervous habit, I've done it since I was a child.

Rubbing the eye could mean: my eye itches.

Hands clasped behind back could mean: I never do this.

Locked ankles could mean: I don't do this either.

Head resting in hand, eyes downcast could mean:I'm tired.

Rubbing hands could mean: my hands feel dirty

Sitting with hands clasped behind head, legs crossed could mean: I'm incredibly uncomfortable in the current situation.

Open palm could mean: my palms are always open.

Pinching bridge of nose, eyes closed could mean: I have a migraine.

Tapping or drumming fingers could mean: I like repetitive sounds

Steepling fingers could mean: I'm popping my knuckles

Patting/fondling hair could mean: I'm having a bad hair day

Tilted head could mean: confusion.

Stroking chin could mean: i never do this.

Looking down, face turned away could mean: anger. but I'm too passive to show it off.

Biting nails:nervous habit.

Pulling or tugging at ear could mean: My ear itches.

just an example of, while some of these are right, they're really just over analyzing everything. Being a human, you have a natural sense of body language. You can tell if someone is uncomfortable, you can tell if someone is relaxed or tired. Aside from that, this list seems like someone with too much time to think came up with it.

Weird, I just realized... When I have nothing to hold in my hands, my hands are never in my front pockets, always in my back pockets. It's probably how I walk, like, with my straight body (there's probably some technical term but hey, it's 7:30 a.m. right now!! :O ) and i have these pants that are really soft on the inside, like there's faux in them and so in the pockets there's faux and it's really warm :goodvibes

I totally agree!!

Body language can tell so much. I think the main thing to think about is that most body language is subconcious. Most people have no idea that they are actually "talking" with their body. I know a lot of people deny the fact of what they do is considered how it is taken, but when something is subconcious, it isn't really known.

I think the main thing is, sometimes people don't even know when they are "leading" someone on. Intentionally or not, sometimes people can't control their body language when it comes to guys and girls. lol. And sometimes they don't even know it.

Not true lol. I still bit my nails despite wearing nail polish and nail polish remover didn't do much good either rofl. I have even tried fake nails for a while. Plastic leaves an awful taste in your mouth... rofl.

It's a really bad habit lol. It has reached the point where when I'm nervous, I can't stop myself from bitting my nails. It isn't so much me choosing to bite my nails as it is a natural thing now. I hate it. I get nervous a lot so it isn't uncommon. Man, I gotta find SOMETHING to stop it lol.

It actually tastes good. :rotfl: Some manicurist put it on my nails after I had them done. I wanted to see if it really did taste horrid... not really.
