Help...my DD's French class is having their Mardi Gras party on Tuesday. Everyone has been selected to bring in certain items and DD has to bring in sliced bananas  for the crepes; however, she does not have French class until the end of the day. They will be allowed to store the items in the home economics class and use refrigerator if necessary, but who wants to eat brown, yucky bananas  . Someone suggested lemon juice, but will that change the taste of the bananas? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

add reconstituted or fresh lemon juice to cold water & 'bathe' the banana slices (or apples, pears etc) in that. IMHO it does not add to the taste.
Or DD could bring in the bananas & have her teacher bring in a plastic knife to slice them with at class time~
I say have her teacher bring the knife in becoz you do not need to be dealing with hysterical school officials!:teeth:

I agree with taking the bananas whole & having the teacher bring a plastic knife. But ask her what they've done in the past. It's likely that this is not the first time her class has done this, so she could tell you how they've handled this in the past.

Wouldn't the home ec classroom have knives......?

Yes, I am sure the home ec class has knives, but the teacher wants all items prepared before they get to school. She said there is only about 40 minutes for the "party", (they must report to class and then she will send students who have perishable items to the home ec class to pick up their items and return to class). The party is NOT in the home ec class because there are classes going on in their. Things must be prepared in advance so that everyone can make what they want and enjoy. Like jonestavern said I don't need any trouble over a plastic knife....thank you all for your suggestions:)

Otherwise Pampered Chef used to do a special kids knife which does not cut kids! I did see a trick once where you "sew" through the bananas in a circle, pull the thread then once you peel the bananas they are ready sliced! I bet if you googled it you could find the diagram:goodvibes

That's so funny, I remember when I was a kid my Dad did that once, and my sister, brother and I thought it was the coolest thing. Back then we thought he knew magic. Thank you for the suggestion.

You can get a plastic putty knife. That might get by while a plastic knife will not.

Dipping in lemon lime soda works the same as lemon juice. I've used it to keep apples from turning brown and since it's not as tart it doesn't mess with the flavor.
