View Full Version : Anyone else with POINTS ENVY?

OK, we bought 450 pts. You'd think that would be enough. After all, we have already enjoyed one nice stay in a 2BR and have another booked for July (and Christmas, but that's next year's points).

But DH finally gets curious enough to check out the DIS, and has some serious "points envy" (his term:rolleyes1 ). Besides wanting to extend our summer vacation longer, we know we will use the points every year. I keep telling him we can just borrow next year's points every year until we can afford to buy more.

Anyone with advice on how much is good to have, ideally? (One DVCer told us 700 is a good amount)

We're going to try out some other resorts before adding on any points. We have SSR, but DH thinks we might want to get some VB and maybe some at one of the other resorts or more at SSR. I think with the more rooms DVC adds on the 11 month window will be important.

Personally were probably looking to get to that 700ish point level too, but it will probably end up with more if DH wants to do VB yearly for spring break.

I think it really differs from person to person. For me, I'd ultimately like 765 points - 200 at BCV, 200 at VWL, 200 at AKV, and 165 at HH. That would get me a 2BR for 5 weeknights (Sunday - Thursday) in all but the Christmas/Easter week seasons. I could have a WDW vacation each quarter, or could combine 2 of the weeks if I wanted.

We like to change resorts and stay at the other Deluxes, so those 5 night stays would probably be augmented by a weekend at the Poly or the Yacht Club, but it would be nice to know we could also use points to stay at the moderates if we wanted.

So far I have the 165 HH points and 165 BCV points, so I'm not quite half way there!!!!

I'm in a reverse situation. We have too many points at the moment, but my wife doesn't want to unload any.

I guess there are worse problems! :thumbsup2

While it's not exactly "points envy", I do envy people who can take multiple and/or long vacations every year. We currently have 310 points, and although DH asked me if I'd want to do an add-on for AKV, I know that we couldn't use any more points right now, until he retires. The nature of his job only allows him to take vacations of a maximum length of 1 week a couple times a year. But when I see people who have lots of points, I envy the fact that they get to use that much vacation time in WDW.

The only time I had "points envy" was just before I purchased my first DVC contract! That cured that affliction! :)

Wow...I think I could use an unlimited number of points. It takes just under 1K to spend a week in most grand villas during the holidays...so maybe 3 or 4K would be perfect? Every time I start talking about an add on DH just thinks :sad2:

Let me know if you ever need help using all those extra points. I'd be happy to make the sacrifice.:lmao:

Everyone's situation is different - we have 800 points at 3 resorts across 6 contracts (all same UY) - we flip between having too many and not enough - let's just say if you got em you will use them regardless of how many you have

This thread made me feel awful. We only have 150 points. And at this stage can only dream about adding more. It looks to me like I have more than points envy!!!! More like points stravation.:sad1:

When we bought our first contract for 200 points, we thought that would be enough. After 3 months we did our first add-on. 6 months later, we realize that we still don't have enough, so added on again. Well, AKV rolls out and guess what, we add-on a third time.

When we first joined we totally underestimated our point use needs, plus how much we really, really love DVC. We originally thought that we would max out at around 500 points. That also has been revised and now we are thinking it might be around 1000 points eventually.

170 here with major points envy. Trying to convince DH that we should add on more at BWV or some at AKV.

We just did an add on at SSR during the F&F promo and afterward my DH says "OK, we're done now, right? I don't have to hear any more about add ons, right?" I just looked at him and smiled and said "we're done...for now.":lmao:

I get 5 weeks of vacation from my employer. We have 500 points right now at SSR. good for 3 weeks at WDW. We go October, December, and March, because the humidity and heat are not too bad in Florida then. We are waiting for the DVC Grand Californian announcement to happen. Then we will buy enough points for 2 weeks at DLR (May, and August) Months that (IMO) are way too hot, rainy, and humid in Florida. California summer weather is dry, sunny and not too hot (Mid 80's with low humidity) This will give us 5 weeks at Disney destinations spread evenly over a year!

I would LOVE to have a couple thousand points so I could stay winters in WDW, but I can't afford the maintenance on them, so I guess I'll have to be satisfied with what I have, and what I am adding on at AKV.

We have 530 points and that's more than we can use right now until I retire. I have vacation time envy. I'd love to be able to go to WDW more than twice each year but I can't get the time away from work to do that.

Well, I have MAJOR point envy.....:sad2: I have 200 SSR points and I love it:cool1:
However, AKL was always my dream DVC, now that it is a reality I am checking point charts and finances to see if I should be spending the money to do a small add-on of 48 points or so (I know it's a strange amount, but it's all I need).

Decisions, decisions:teacher:

This is torture:rotfl:

I'm really sorry if starting this was a bad idea - I just thought my husband's comment was funny. Not trying to start a contest of any kind. Just seemed like everybody he was reading had tons of points! I know there can be a wide range depending on family size, whether you choose to finance, how often you travel, where you live, etc. etc.

We started out with much smaller ideas, but after looking at points charts and talking it through for HOURS (DH gets a little obsessive) he decided on the 450. I was gulping all the way through the paper signing - but we live in a very modest house for our community, I just went back to work, and felt like this was something worth working for.

I certainly didn't intend for anyone to feel awful or sick, so I apologize if I stepped on any toes. I'm still new to DVC community and I'm so sorry if I committed a major faux pas!!:confused3

Hi, DM27. Don't sweat it. Threads like this are posted all the time. There is absolutely no need to feel bad for posting it.
Most everyone who has lots of points didn't start out with lots. The add ons start to accumulate over the years...

I don't see any of this as a "competition". We choose to spend our money on points, but I bet we have one of the least expensive homes of anyone here.
It's just how the individual family chooses to use their discretionary income. :)

LOL!!! MG I will see your least expensive home and raise you 1 shack!:lmao: We have a ton of points, but we also decided to stay put in our love shack and not upgrade. If I want to entertain family and friends, we will do it at WDW, the shack is just for us.:cloud9:

So it is all about priorities. I didnt want to be one of my coworkers, with the big house and no vacations so we chose DVC.

We've got 450 points also, I've got to many points at the moment, we purchased F&F at SSR and already added on at AKV. We recieved 300 points for our 06 Oct UY. I don't think we'll use them all and may have to rent or transfer some of them.
We have a cruised booked for April vacation on the Freedom of the Seas.I know I can bank whats leftover from 06 to 07 but if I didn't use them I would lose them? I was going to start a thread on this but maybe I can get some answers here?

You could have sailed on the Magic or Wonder, used up those points and saved the cash from the other cruise! :smokin:

I have the same prob as Simba's We have 450 points(used for 8 nights 2br at BWV in July every year cause i take my parents brother and his girlfriend) and I would get more points if i could use them, but eing a solo Doc I can't be away from my practice for more than a week and a half a year.

I think the point about how you use your points is the very important I have a collegue who has right around 2000 points and only uses half( at the most) a year and lets the rest expire.

I feel strange because we definitely have less points than many, but feel no envy. Once AKV goes through we'll have 290 points, not huge but enough for us. We might add 10 more just to round it out, but no big deal. We use the points we have and don't need to bank or borrow to excess. Though I must admit to occaisionally wondering what I could do with 1000 points, then I remember that I can't afford the dues.

We have 500 points because we are a family of five and need larger accomodations. if we were a family of 3 with 350 points we would actually be better off. So it really does depend on how you use your points.

I see your shack and raise it. We want to downsize our home to something alot smaller and maintenace free, so we can stay longer on our trips.

Why does this just make me want to cry?

So much could be done with those unused points. Heck, he could make a ressie and donate to charity. A lot of families would beg for a chance to take their kids to Disney (especially sick or disadvantaged kids). And churches could raise a lot with an auction. Unused points could become a charitable donation/tax writeoff.

I'll have some points envy when I hear the regulars talk about their 500+ points. But then I remember they are old timers and accrued that amount over time. Or 320 points is enough to give us 2-3 Disney vacations a year and still be able to do an extended family thing. Our max is 12 days in a 1 bedroom (9 in a 2 bedroom). Sometimes I think it'd be nice to have enough to make it an even 14 (2 weeks), but then I remember we can always add-on at the newer resorts.

Hey there...are you a chiro? Where in Illinois are you located? I have family in the field, and we are in Illinois too! We have been DVC since 94 and love it.

Can't keep up with the add ons, but grateful they offer them. We use most of our points for cruising...including going to the MED!

Exactly the way my husband and I feel. We have a nice home; it just wasn't THAT expensive so we're able to travel for two weeks every year at the end of December. We have some friends that never go anywhere because they "can't afford it" and don't see how we can. But they have a house that's twice as expensive as ours and isn't really that much larger (maybe 200 sq. ft. max). Oh, and they also buy new cars every other year...or should I say they FINANCE a new car every other year that includes the roll-over amount from old one.

It all comes down to what you want...we wanted a nice house, decent cars, and fabulous vacations.

When we first bought DH was contracting. For us to go to Disney it meant losing a paycheck. We bought 300 points and rented some of them out. Now he has a job that gives him 4 weeks of vacation a year. We bought more points. I home school so we can go whenever we want. We have added on twice now. We are up to 570 points. I think we have plenty but who knows.
