Animals... we've got animals! With 2 dogs, 5 cats & a hamster - I've got lots of subjects!
Here's a "creative" one! This is Daphne our "middle" cat who gave us five kittens earlier this year. We kept two of the babies!

Here are Princess & Maia
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/makasper/Pets/PETSPrincessandMaia.jpg
Emmie and Cassie - They were here first.... so not happy about all the newer residence. Yes, the have both fallen in the pool from time to time! It does not seem to bother them when their tales lay on the water!
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/makasper/Pets/PetsCassieandEmmie11_20_05.jpg
Kovu and Simba - Daphne's boys - in fact the ONLY boys who live in our house!

Here is my baby - Ginny. Hard to get a good pic of an all black cat...

...and Dude...

Molly and Dude were both shelter kitties and had FeLV - I wasn't aware of their sickness until Dude got sick and died last year. Molly followed soon after. Ginny may just be a carrier so she may never get sick but she'll have to be an only kitty because she's very contagious. She's our sweet baby. :)

Ok you got me started...
here is the little puff ball at three months when we first got her. Her name is Q
http://mnmstudios.smugmug.com/photos/8309778-M.jpg
this was mid wrestling and she is plotting an attack while resting...
She is a very smart one. Among other things she can roll down the windows in my truck.
Long first day at the new house:
http://mnmstudios.smugmug.com/photos/7518806-M.jpg
later I snapped this shot:
http://mnmstudios.smugmug.com/photos/10292367-L.jpg
and it was picked for "photo of the day" by kodak and was on the Kodak times square billboard:
http://mnmstudios.smugmug.com/photos/11688453-M.jpg
She is now just over 2 years old and marcie has recently added fred:

not as many pics of him.Marcie has more....
Hope you like them

Here is one I took tonight. I have to find the ones I did out in the backyard. I put my camera almost on the ground to snap the pics eye-level with him and it turned out so cool! His name is Thumper....real original huh? lol

Mike, your dogs are gorgeous! I love looking at everyone's pets. Here's one more of my other puffball. Her name is Sabrina. She is the only cat I have ever had who rolls over on her back and literally begs you to rub her tummy. She also likes to spread her toes apart and rub your fingers between each one. Strange kitty!

How long have you been taking photo's? Did you ever take any classes for it or is it all "self taught"? Mines all been self taught. My pics from 10 years ago are embarrassing! The backgrounds alone.........I should scan them and crop and clone, lol. That is a cute pic. What kind of dogs are they?
I can't believe how good all of your pics are! Some are cute and some are funny, lol.

Just practice and reading. Much reading at www.dpreview.com on their forums. They are sorted by camera model or manufacturere so you can get realy accurate and detailed info to help with learning. But the dis photography forum has widened my eyes. Like that Disney co. shot from the top of a garbage can, WOW! (sorry I can't remember who shot it, translated into too tired to scroll the low light pics thread)
I started with a minolta x700 film camera maybe 8 years ago. Ran that for a while then got a Sony 717. I have had the Rebel for less than a year.
Digital is great for learning. Just keep trying every setting. I always shoot what I think to be the right settings then try another shot more or less exposed. More or less DOF etc...
The key to a good gallery is.... Only post the good pics, heheheheee
Just like sculpting, simply carve away everthing that does not look like an elephant.
Mikeeee
and thanks for the comments Jenn
Ok the pic deserved a shout
It was by pea-n-me
here is the link, page 10 post 140. Just awesome exposure and not bad garbage can cleaning either!

But the times square shot was from a volunteer from dpreview who was local. I am northwest of chicago and would not have had the financing to go to new york to just take a picture. The color is nice because it was a cloudy day and I love the compositon which included the bustling street.

Your pups are very sweet... I can see why you were happy about getting home one day early to see them. When we go away - which is not often living here... everyone comes to see us.... leaving all the animals behind is that hardest part!

Is this a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel? I think these dogs are absolutely adorable! I unfortunately had to put my 17 year old Lhasa Apso down in January. :guilty: But when the time comes to get a puppy, we're highly considering a KCCS...they are just too cute!
Here's a picture of my little guy, Coco. Please excuse the poor quality of the photo, it was taken with my camera phone, but I just had to show him off.

This is Shadow. It may not look like a special picture, but Shadow celebrated her 19th birthday on August 17th and she doesn't get around much anymore, especially not outside. A couple of days ago she was at the back door wanting out and actually went down off the deck and explored the backyard, something she hasn't done for years. So I had to get out the camera and get some pics of her.

I have a black torti cat with orange patches sort of, so she is difficult to get a good picture of. I am going to post one to see if anyone can offer suggestions on how I can capture her without my picture being too dark.

Very cute!!
My cat's mother was a torti. Shadow is pretty much just black, but in the right light, I can see a bit of orange spots on her.
As far as tkaing her picture, maybe if you were able to take pictures out in the sunlight, if she goes out....or with the sunlight coming in the window onto her.

Thanks so much for the kind words Pea-n-Me. The Shilohs are brother and sister but were born 1 year and 10 days apart. Nico is the younger of the two but outweighs his sister by at least 20 pounds now. He is huge!
So is are your brother/sister pair Shilohs as well? If so, what breeder did you buy from? Can't wait to see the pics.

How big are they? I've only had GSDs, but the two I had for many years were also brother and sister one year apart. Here is their picture (and I've added it to the first post), taken in 1993, when Kayla, the female, was only about 6 months old [and just spayed] and Cody was about a year and a half. This is from a framed picture I keep in my bedroom, had to scan it in, etc, but it's one of my favorites of the two of them.
When she was fully grown, Kayla ended up larger than Cody - she was about 106 lbs, he was about 88. Kayla is the dog in the OP sniffing the kitten, and Cody is the one laying with and licking the kitten. They were so gentle. One day when I was visiting my brother's house with them, my DH called me to come see something, and there they were sitting on the front porch with a friendly neighborhood cat between them, all three of them relaxed and scanning the neighborhood, LOL. I miss them so much, they were two of the best dogs you could ask for. :sad1:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y69/paulandlinda/Plymouth176.jpg
This is also one of my favorite pictures of them. They were around 5 and 6 years old, my twins were about 5 weeks old, this was our Christmas card that year. (I've got to do something about the red-eye.)

What a cute photo of your dogs and twins, Pea-n-Me! If you want some tips on how to get rid of red eye on the dogs, I remember a thread that was either started on here or had the topic brought up in it on how to get rid of the flash reflection in dogs' eyes. You might want to see if you can turn that up in a search.
Pea-n-Me
01-24-2007, 01:33 PM
Thanks, guys! I've tried to remove the red eye with the basic imaging software installed on our computer to no avail. But we recently installed Photoshop so I think we'll have better luck with that, and maybe we can even sharpen the colors. Will try tonight. I think I'm also going to try to get up to the beach today to see if I can get some shots of my dog with my new S3. It's :cold: up there, though...

Really great looking dogs! I love the attentive look from both of them on the shot at the beach.
To answer your question, Nico is at least 120 (I am guessing 130 but I haven't had him weighed in a while) and Belle is around 100. My wife is 5'4" and Nico can stand with his front paws on her shoulders and is as tall as her. But he is the most gentle dog I have ever owned. He is a huge momma's boy and is extremely gentle with the cats and our much smaller Chow Chow.

I love this picture! Shows that sweet side of cats together! Our two 11 year olds don't really spend much time together but the crazy, hyper one likes to shake her 'booty', then ambush the sedate one with a big SMOOCH on the head and then a two or three minute cleaning session. We just get such a kick out of the whole thing! What an act!!!!

mla973 - thanks a lot. Your photos instigated some long please from DS of "awww, why can't we get one of those?"! (Of course, he loves all types of animals - I imagine when he grows up he's going to have a house full!)

OMG, this one made my heart jump, she looks just like our dog Gizmo that we had to put down about a year ago. He was a shepard/samoyed mix and your Jasmine is a spitting image of him.
Im so sorry about Gizmo (love the name)

And Lily
http://jenniferd.smugmug.com/photos/126277224-M.jpg
Both of them together. Eli is really camera shy - Lily is a total ham and will lay for hours letting me take photos of her. I had a horrible time trying to get Eli to stay next to Lily for any length of time - so I had to make due with this photo. I was not crazy about the way the background looked - so I had some fun with photoshop (obviously).

Again these are some stunning photos!
My only beef, most of the cats look under fed compared to my Alaska born cats *lmbo*. Of course my AZ friends think my cats need a wee-bit of a diet. ha ha ha
Two of the three are 25#+ and solid little buggers. One looks big but is all fur.

I heard some noise today and I looked over to see my kitten Stitch pull open our laptop bag (actually pulled open the bag with the zipper) and climbed inside. Our older cat was curious to see what the noise was and I took some photos...

This is Ian, our beloved bordie collie who left us August 7, 2006 at the ripe old age of 16. I miss that sweet old gray face every single day.
http://demonllama.smugmug.com/photos/116618337-L.jpg
This is Katy, our younger border collie, age 6, who is misses Ian almost as much as I do.
http://demonllama.smugmug.com/photos/116618324-M.jpg
This is Fisher, our cat of 8 years. Fisher is largely a PITA and Katy typically wants to sit like this, inches from Fisher, at all times which totally pisses Fisher off. Fisher, we just found out this past September when we changed vets, is NOT a he, but a she. Yes, after 8 years. And yes, we still say "he." We think his/her bad attitude must stem in part from the gender confusion.
http://demonllama.smugmug.com/photos/116618916-M.jpg
Finally, here is Faith, our newest addition, a five year old sweetheart who generally ignores Fisher's bad moods and could care less about Katy's cat-staring issues. This is one of the only pics I have from work of her. Here, she has just licked my daughter's toes as I snapped the picture.

Skye, my lhasa apso cross. She is 15 years old, blind and deaf, and I love her to bits. She is a bit of a nagging old lady, but she is allowed to be. She is also "top dog" in the house!!
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k6/hjd0411/DSCN0165.jpg
This is Charlotte, my nearly 2 year old German Shepherd. (In the photo she is just over 1 year). She is a delight - and loves posing for photos!! This is her waiting patiently (NOT!!) for her balls to be thrown in the park. She obeys all that Skye asks of her...

And this is Shadow, the oldest of the crew. She is 16 years old now, and lives most of her days in the pot plant on my front deck!
Thanks everyone for sharing - what a lovely idea for a thread. All the photos are gorgeous.

This is our 15 year old terrier mutt. She's quite the challenge to photograph. If you get too much light in her eyes, they glow solid green. not enough and you'll never see her eyes at all because the dark fur and big eyebrows. The black fur really draws in the light too. A bounce flash seems to produce the best results.
On a sadder note, the vet told us yesterday that her kidneys have pretty much failed and she's only got a couple of days left. We've got some great photos and memories to remember her though. It's hard enough on my wife and I (we got her as a puppy from my folks shortly after we were married) but explaining it to my 5 year old is even harder.

rtphokie, your girl is beautiful, and I'm sorry to hear she's ill. We lost our two dogs (pictured in OP) when our twins were around the same age as your child. One of their teachers was a dog lover, and lent us a copy of this book http://www.amazon.com/Dog-Heaven-Cynthia-Rylant/dp/0590417010 It helped our kids understand, but really I think I got more out of it than they did. It's sold at Borders and such places, hope it might help your family. :grouphug:
I noticed the "green eye" phenomenon as our dogs aged too, especially in one of them who had the eye disease pannus. I think you've done a great job getting the effect you want without showing a lot of the green.

rtphokie - So sorry about the news your vet gave you. It's amazing how they become family and it's so difficult to say goodbye, especially after having them since puppies. DH and I had to put down our first dog last year, we got him as a pup at a local animal shelter when we were first married and the day we had to put him down was such a difficult day for all of us (DD also who was 12).
This is our beloved Gizmo (this was taken when he was younger and it's the one I thought of when I saw the picture BethanyF posted of her dog). I posted our shih tzu's and cat when this thread first started but I just came across these in an old email from my mother so I'm happy to be able to post a picture of him since my pictures of him are on my other computer.

I would have guessed German Shepard (long nose & ears) and Keeshond or Elkhond (coloring, feathery leg hairs and the fluffy tail)

Bear with me, this may not happen on the first go round.

Love those cats, Merry.
You seem to have a Disney name thing going. Does this extend to the doggies too?
Ah, Snappy came by her name from her behavior of making a snapping noise with her jaws when she gets excited. She is basically a pretty laid back gal but when she is stirred up for whatever reason, those jaws start a snapping.
No biting, just a nice sound.

Our house is a zoo. :rotfl: I'm sure we'd have more if the kids would let us. Buddy and the 2 cats are rescues. The other two dogs are purebred. All are spoiled rotten.
Yes, we have a Disney thing going with the cat names, but not the dogs. J. Cricket came first, so when Ro came along and he looked like Figaro, we just didn't even think about anything else. Our bichons are Holly Noel and Sasha Marie and our spaniel-chow mix (or spow as my DH calls him) is named Buddy Hackett. :lmao: My daughter named him that.
I'll work on getting a couple of pictures of them up later. DD is hogging the computer tonight. So maybe tomorrow?

Buddy Hackett???? There MUST be a good story behind that one.
OK spill the beans, Merry.
Thanks, Linda for the compliment on the floors. I was really taking a picture of the floors but Snappy horned in on the picture.:rotfl:
Not really, I think DD11 took the picture.
I did tell you our new camera was chosen based not necessarily on the quality of the pictures but on its sturdiness?
It is pretty good though, it is an Olympus, supposed to be able to withstand a lot of punishment, read as major use by a teen and a preteen. And the very next time I go deep sea diving, I am so taking that camera since it is waterproof (not sure if I am though). Ha!

Okay. Let's see if I can tell it right. Buddy adopted us. He just sort of appeared one day and decided to stay. I said "No way! We don't need another dog!" and the kids and DH gave me the sad-eyed look. They said it was our Christian duty to find him a home and not turn him out on his own. So I finally agreed as long as there were certain ground rules:
1. We were not naming him. (My experience has been that once they're named, you're hooked for life.)
2. We were just keeping him long enough to find his owner or a new home.
3. We would keep him in the yard, not the house.
Well, we ended up calling him Buddy. They assured me it was not his NAME, but just something to call him other than "hey dog". He's been with us for 7 or 8 years now, so I guess he's staying. :rolleyes1 And he comes in in the summer to get cool and in the winter to get warm. My rules all went right out the window. But I do love him. He's a very sweet dog.
Eventually, DD said that his name should be more than just plain Buddy. All the other pets had more than one name and he was pitiful. We joked about Buddy Holly, but since we have a Holly we decided that would be confusing to everyone. DD loves musicals, so she thought of The Music Man and Buddy Hackett. Buddy is silly as a pup and always dancing around and spinning in circles, so she proclaimed that Hackett was the perfect name for him. And Buddy had a coughing fit which made her even more sure that Hackett was the right choice. So maybe he's trying to carry on the Disney tradition. Buddy Hackett was in the Love Bug movies and in The Little Mermaid.

Sorry I'm so slow. Here is a picture of Buddy Hackett. :rotfl: He doesn't like sitting still for photos, so it's not very flattering. He always thinks he's getting into trouble. And if you try to take natural photos of him he's a blur.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/jaschones/Buddy012.jpg
And this is a picture of our two bichons at Halloween. The larger one is Sasha and the smaller one is Holly. They are double cousins. The breeder has several dogs. Sasha's mother and Holly's dad are brother and sister. Same with Sasha's dad and Holly's mother. And yet they don't look that much alike.

My favorite pictures of my dogs are usually ones I take outside for that reason. Some people have good luck using a "bounce flash" - one which bounces light of the ceiling and not in the dogs' eyes. I think it's an external unit. Good luck, lets see some of your pets!

OK, so that was my first post of photographs to this board. Why are they so huge compared to others? What settings do you all usually use? I think photobucket resized them to 1024 X 768. Should they be more like 800 X 600?

I think that is about right on the size of my photos. I re-sized them all in photobucket so they look a bit more normal now. Lets try one more:
The raccoon was in the original picture, but he must have walked away:
