Here is Hershey after her/our big, scary ordeal 2 weeks ago. DH took her hiking up Mt Jefferson on the same Tues that my DD and I flew to AZ to visit a friend. She ended up with heat exhaustion and 4 badly cut paws. She gave up 1/2 way down the mt. DH gave her the rest of the water he had then hiked down and filled his water bottles and brought more water to her. She still wouldn't continue. Finally he decided to carry her a 1/4 mile down to a stream to cool her down- the dog weighs over 90lbs- DH is 135lbs. I have no idea how he did it. I guess you do get super strength when you need it. After a 1/2 hr in the water she crawled out and laid down in a ditch and would not go anymore. With no one else around DH had to leave her there to go get help. He hiked a mile down to the cog railway station- there was no one there to help him but the caretaker told him he could use the stretcher they had. He called our 19y.o. DD to see if she could round up some friends and come help(2.5 hr drive away)DH carried the stretcher back up to Hershey- where he found 6 or 8 other hikers with the dog- a few of them building a stretcher out of 2 branches and their own shirts and jackets! DH called DD and told her to turn around that he had gotten help. This group all took turns carrying her down to the car on the stretcher:goodvibes I'd hate to hear what they may have been saying when they found this poor dog abandoned on the trail, tho! Anyway- I got many calls from DH after they made it to the car. I panicked each time he called for fear she wasn't ok. He was extremely worried about her- it was close to 11pm by the time they got home. She ended up at the emergency vet the next day. Almost $900 in vet bills later, Hershey is doing great- no permanent damage- feet are all healed. The vet said if he hadn't gotten her to water to cool her down her body would have shut down. Just to let everyone know- Hershey is a hiker. She is in great shape- has hiked 46 of the 48 4000footers in NH, some multiple times so it wasn't like he took her with no conditioning. The vet said it was a freak thing but after it happens once they are prone to it. So no more summer hiking for Hershey. She is gonna be bummed the next time DH gets his pack out to go and he doesn't take her:( She gets all excited when she sees hiking gear.

To the PP with the Husky Nali... BEAUTIFUL DOG!!!

Here's my dog Lilo giving my DS a kiss... this was really his first time being around Lilo, so I was happy to see Lilo only kissed him...and didn't eat him. LOL

That's super scary! Dogs are funny creatures like this...they'll go hard until they can't go anymore and there are little to no signs of anything wrong. You've really gotta watch for it especially in any working/sporting dog. We have a 2 year old English Cocker (can't tell her apart from a springer though). She's the same way.

I missed this post... guess I don't check the updates regularly. Anyway, glad that Hershey is o.k. That sounds like it was really scary.

Yes. I've been walking and running our Husky this summer and she pushes herself hard. She also gives no signs if she starts to get too hot. The only way I can check her body heat is to stick my finger in to the back of her mouth and feel her gums. If she's getting too hot, you can feel it there. I check her about every 1/2 mile if we're out in the middle of the day and maybe every 1 mile if it's the early a.m. or late afternoon.

Yeah- we almost found out the hard way. We were told later that labs will go go go til they drop. Thats pretty much what she did. This summer has been very weird up here. She is late shedding her coat since it didn't really get warm until the end of July, the hot humid weather just arrived recently- lots of rain and cool weather. That may have had an impact. She's hiked the previous 3 summers without a prob.
DH did have a hard time leaving her there. Hershey never lets him out of her sight when we hike- it must have been awful for her.
She has 2 more peaks to bag to get all 48- we will continue when it cools off in Sept/Oct. The last of her bloodwork should be back today to make sure there was no permanent damage done.

Todd- will the gums actually feel hot? That is something good to know.

I will tell you another great thing to carry when hiking. Vetrap! We carry a roll with us all the time. Its what the vet wrapped her feet in. Dh used it on her cut feet on the trail. Its just like the medical tape they sell for people in the pharmacy only Vetrap is meant for horses legs.(its not sticky tape- its puckered, stretchy- the human one is usually white- good for sprains, cuts, etc..)Vetrap is $1.50 roll at a horse supply/feed store. The human version is $5-$6 for a smaller roll. Its not sticky but it does stick to itself when applied properly so no tape is needed. DD used it on her leg after a softball injury- we used to use it on the horses when we had them-excellent stuff! And it come in cool colors:thumbsup2

I hope everything goes well with the bloodwork.

Actually, let me clarify that statement about the gums. For my Husky, I can feel her gums and tell if she's getting too hot because they will be very dry and a bit warmer than normal, but the sure sign is that they will also start to change color (a bright red). She will also have that white stuff around her mouth (which is really your first warning sign that it's time for a water break).

We hiked almost 10 miles yesterday up Mt Passaconaway. First hike back. She's back to herself.
We'd been trying to get her to drop a little weight. Not easy! She is the queen of beggars! She has many, many hikes under her belt so she is in very, good shape even tho she doesn't look it- the vet wants her weight down mostly to protect her joints. She was almost 95lbs, now she is just over 90. The vet saw her last week and said maybe drop a few more. Originally he wanted her around 80lbs but she is a big girl so now he says she looks really good but maybe just lose a few lbs more.

I feel your pain about trying to get a Chocolate Lab to drop a little weight. Our lab Rocky went to the vet recently because he was limping and was diagnosed with arthritis and mild hip dysplasia and the vet told us that she would like us to drop him from around 107 pounds to around 100.

We were SHOCKED that he weighed over 100 pounds, because he isn't pudgy looking at all, he's just a big dog. Tall, muscular, but all around. Since then, he has lost about 3 pounds. He's on supplements which have allowed him to run around again---alleviating the pain of his arthritis and we cut out 2 cups of food between our 2 dogs per day. It's a slow and steady process and now, instead of doggy icecream for a treat on a hot summer day, he gets watermelon. :rotfl:

(please forgive the horrible back yard, it was spring, so the grass was juuuust starting to grow in :))

When we hike she will go up to a complete stranger at the summit and check out what they are eating and more often than not she will get a bite One time she took a pop tart right out of a kid's hand! And the drool! OMG! Anytime we eat and she is near its down my leg, on my feet, a puddle on the floor. Its crazy. My kids always tell me I won't get fat as long as she's around since I share with her just to stop the drool:rotfl:
As for exercise, she gets more than your average dog. She is def. not a couch potoato. We take her hiking, we walk a local rail trail and our town forest a few times week. We'll take her to the lake in the canoe and let her out to swim, we take her to the beach to run. She'll run around with other dogs, chases my parents chickens:scared1: She does NOT retrieve. So no throwing the ball in the backyard. She won't go get it.
Good luck getting Rocky slimmer! Not an easy task. Btw...Hershey never liked watermelon but while on top of the mt yesterday we met a couple with a dog- they shared their watermelon with us and Hershey ate 3-4 pieces!

We've cut her dry food down and I now buy her small dog treats rather than ones for large dogs but she begs like no ones business!

Our dogs only eat dry food, wet food makes me want to gag. :rotfl2: They eat Merrick brand which is $50 per bag, so considering we go through about 3 bags per month---there is no way I'm spending another dollar if I don't have to!!

And the drool! OMG! Anytime we eat and she is near its down my leg, on my feet, a puddle on the floor. Its crazy. My kids always tell me I won't get fat as long as she's around since I share with her just to stop the drool

Our Golden Retriever is the major drooler. Both are really good about not begging, but I literally wear a blanket on my legs at all times when on the couch to keep the drool from soaking my clothes. :rotfl:

She does NOT retrieve. So no throwing the ball in the backyard. She won't go get it.

Rocky doesn't retrieve either. That picture of him that I posted of him with the King Wubba was after he stole if from our Golden Retriever (who LOVES fetch) and wouldn't give it back. Our Golden, Mickey, plays fetch like nobody's business---Rocky plays keep away like nobody's business. :headache:

Hershey never liked watermelon but while on top of the mt yesterday we met a couple with a dog- they shared their watermelon with us and Hershey ate 3-4 pieces!

This is the first year we have tried feeding them watermelon and they ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. It's quite possibly my favorite summer activity with them now. We cut it into slices like a human would eat and then eat the red part all the way until the rind is left in a cresent moon shape. It's so cute to watch them nibble along where the red meets green and know that they are supposed to stop after the fleshy part is gone.

That being said, if Hershey ever eats a lot of watermelon at once, make sure you aren't leaving the house anytime shortly thereafter. The first time our dogs ate watermelon I completely forgot that (duh!) it was mostly water. They ate like 4 pieces each, and we went out to dinner. I felt so bad when we came home and one had peed right next to the back door. I won't be making that mistake again.

$50 a bag! Yikes:scared1::scared1:
I've found if I switch Hershey off Iams large breed- her coat gets dull. So I get that and mix it with another brand which I switch around. Newmans, Rachel Ray, Kibbles and Bits, just so she's not eating the same old stuff all the time. We give her 1/2 can of food a day. Only the ones with 'chunks' so she feels like she's getting something. The 6 cats also split a can or 2 each day.
So she isn't the only retriever that won't retrieve? Funny! She'll just give me a look like you want me to chase that? Are you crazy? I thought throwing sticks in the ocean or lake would get her running and swimming. Nope.
Thanks for the watermelon warning!

It's hard, I'm usually too busy holding it for them to eat!!

However, I do have a whole watermelon that is perfectly ripe sitting on my kitchen counter---and since it is the last weekend of summer, maybe I'll make my DH feed them and I'll bust out the camera for their last watermelony treat of the year. :thumbsup2

AWWW! I love my dachshunds! Is he a barker and a submissive pee'er like mine is?

Unfortunately he is a dog that should be in one dog family. He is a barker but he can be agressive when the others get excited. My friend is looking for a home for him where he can be the only spoiled one. She has to watch him closely when the others start barking or getting excited for any reason. He is very loveable but also very protective of her and can't deal when he isnt the center of attention.

My Jack has to be the center of attention too. He has to be touched constantly and if you take your hand off of him for a second, he barks at you. Thankfully he isn't agressive, but I can totally see it in his eyes and the way he quivers his lips, that he could be. We love him to death but he can be a bit annoying. We always joke that we could never give him away because someone would kill him. Wait, that wasn't really a joke though...well it is to us.

I ask Franklin all the time where he came from. We live in a residential neighborhood, not very many, if any, homeless cats. I wonder if someone drove him here and dropped him off? Or he just wandered and got lost? It will always be a mystery- he's not talking! He's staked claim to my bed- he only goes out late at night, which is funny because when he 1st showed up, he would only come late at night. Now he will cry under my bedroom window to come in anywhere from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.:rolleyes1 He didn't leave the house once from last Oct. when DH brought him in, until summer when it warmed up.

I'm just glad she found us before she got pregnant. I figured even if she wanders away now (which I doubt) she will not be contributing to the overpopulation of cats!! :thumbsup2

I just checked on her and her surgery site still looks a little rough so I'm going to keep her in a few days longer. She's separate from the other animals though because that would possibly be WW3 if they all met!

Update on JoJo the DISDog. He is really beginning to show his age of 16. He hobbles when he walks and has a fairly persistent cough. Late in August while with us on vacation he took a bad fall and we nearly lost him but he has bounced back. He is eating well and his bathroom habits are normal again. A lot of people on this board and other friends have said a lot of prayers for him.

Here is a recent photo of him with us on vacation in the mountains of NC.

This is Olive...she showed up as a starving 2 steps from death stray about 2 months ago and was supposed to be an outside cat. I kept her inside for about a week after I got her spayed and she decided that inside was where she wanted to be! :confused3 Their is still a lot of hissing between her and the other 3 resident cats right now. Here she is in her "safe zone" I can't get good pictures of her, she never looks as pretty in pictures as she is in real life.

Very cute, boB. How are you liking the G11?

Canon's G11 is an interesting camera and it fills a gap in our lineup. We have dSLRs and bought a tiny Canon SD1100 for casual use but it has real trouble with even ISO 400. The G11 looked like something we could carry when we don't want the bulk of a SLR (and we have small SLRs).

The G11 has all the manual controls anyone could want, captures RAW, and does HDR sets. ISO 800 is easily good enough for web use and with a f/2.8 IS lens that makes the G11 a potentially decent night camera. I may actually carry it for a day at WDW to see just how it does in the real world.

I won't post this photo to avoid getting in trouble in a pet photo thread, this is a G11 HDR view from my office window and shows that the G11 may be a real camera:

Michelle, I'm sorry to hear Ivan was sick. I hope he's feeling better now. :flower3: It must be really great to have a horse as a pet (lots of hard work, I'm sure).

Bob, hoping you share lots more of your pet photos taken w/ your G11. Always good to see what a camera like that can do. :thumbsup2 I was just looking over some settings from my S3 and noticed the aperture on it goes to f/2.7 at its widest. What's your opinion of whether this on the S3 differs in any way from that on the G11? Is the sensor bigger on the G11? What's the zoom like on the G11? (Sorry to discuss here but I'm curious. As the OP, I say it's ok. :teeth: )

We rescued a stray cat about 2 months ago when she was about 2 steps from death. Poor thing weighed only 5 pounds and you could feel every bone in her body. We wanted her to be a barn cat, but she had other ideas so she's in the house now! We weighed her the other day and she is 11 pounds!! She over doubled her weight in 2 months so that just shows you how starved she was!

She is finally venturing out of the bedroom that she calls "home". Here she is checking out the litter boxes that belong to the other 3 cats...

Great story:goodvibes We had 6 cats up until mid Sept. We had to have our old girl put to sleep:( My DD was calling me the crazy cat lady. We live in a 3 bedroom ranch on .34acres in a residential neighborhood and I don't think we have too many. They aren't a problem at all. Though, we use a kids plastic swimming pool for a litter box:rolleyes1 Its in the basement and it works out great! They love it. 4 of the 5 are in and out cats and 1 is an indoor cat. I think it becomes 'crazy' when you have so many you can't take care of them properly.

Wow...just realized I haven't had any photos in here of my cat Mickey since last February, when she had only just been an indoor cat for a month, after having lived outside my house for the first 7 months (I first started feeding her as a stray at about 4-6 weeks old in June 2008).

She's now roughly 1 1/2 years old, but never got any bigger than 6-7lbs - she must have been the runt, and stayed small...she also retains a bunch of kitten energy! Here's a few various recent shots of Mickey around the house:

Staring out the window to see what things happen by is always a favorite pasttime:
http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/113202965.jpg

One of Mickey's favorite toys...a little mouse (I know...sacreligious!):
http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/113202968.jpg

One of the interesting resting positions:
http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/113202970.jpg

Having a bite to eat, with a little lick to clean up:
http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/119514925.jpg

Another favorite toy...a lizard! Fortunately for the toy, this one is outside the window as it doesn't end as happily for the toy when they're inside! (you can just make out the lizard on the other side of the glass right in front of Mickey's face):
http://www.pbase.com/zackiedawg/image/118695281.jpg

And at night, sleeping in front of the fireplace:

Thanks, Sha and everyone for your nice words about my Grace. She is so sweet and trusting, always at my side and willing to do whatever I ask of her--I found her little elf costume, so I'll have to dress her up.
Augusta, on the other hand, would have had that hat off in a second and torn to bits in the next two, just to teach me a lesson about humiliating her! In fact, if Augusta would have seen this hat on Grace, she would have removed it from her head in an instant as if to say, "What's the matter with you! You're a Labrador Retriever, for Pete's sake, not some dress up doll. Don't put up with any of that nonsense. I'm embarassed for you, do you know that?"
LOL

So Liesl "helped"with the renovation?

I can only imagine how helpful the Naj would be.:rolleyes1

When we go visiting, he's not very trustworthy (not that he is 100% at home either!), so I found a diaper for him because he really doesn't like to be left at home.:)

For the first time in a long time we have a new pet in the house. :goodvibes

This is Gus. He's a black teddy bear hamster. The dog loves watching him (and he doesn't seem bothered by her at all, lol).

I have had a sad day today - I had to have my dear little Skye put to sleep. She has been with us for 18 years, and was most definitely the leader of my small pack! :)
She had been off colour for a couple of days, but was very listless on Sunday, and on Sunday night I discovered a very large and hard lump in her tummy that the vet thought could be a tumour on her mammary gland. (She showed no sign of that until Sunday.) She was in some discomfort, so we decided that the best thing for her was to end her discomfort.
As I write this through many tears that have been shed for her, I firmly believe that she is now much more comfortable, and back to her lively younger self where she can see, hear and run in the grass like she did.
I will miss her every day.

Aww, Heather, I'm so sorry about Skye. She was beautiful. :sad1:

FROM FRIEND TO FRIEND

You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

hjd0411, I am so sorry for your loss. She was such a beautiful dog. On a related note though, I do have one question for everyone on here. Whenever you hear of a fellow DISer or fellow pet owner losing a friend like this, do you find yourself overly emotional for the next few days?? Ever since I heard about this, I have become emotional towards my own dog who is barely even one year old and in good health. But I find myself thinking about that dreadful reality that is hopefully years away, and it almost brings me to tears. We become so close to our pets that it doesn't seem fair that we only get to spend such a short time with them. I've even been asking myself this week if I would ever get another pet after this one because the heartache will be too much. I know so much one here especially, we focus on the photography of our pets but I wanted to kind of touch on this subject so that it might help others and myself deal with this. :sad1:

Thanks PhotobearSam :flower3:. I know I had been thinking for a couple of years that Skye would be not with us for too much longer, but, as I have said to my lovely friends, no matter how prepared you think you might be for this to happen, you never are. But I think of the good times and laughs that she gave us.

Thank you RBennett :flower3: I do find myself very emotional like you. I have another dog who is nearly 5 (Charlotte) and I have looked at her over the last few days thinking about her going, too (hopefully in the very far off future). But I couldn't be without her - she has been so loving - she came over and licked my face when I was crying for Skye, as if to say "It's OK Mum, I'm here to help you". I know some people get a new pet almost straight away after they lose an old friend, but I don't think I could do that. But that doesn't mean that I wouldn't get another dog. I love the companionship and I think the years of love that you get from them far outweighs the grief that you feel when they are gone. Everyone is different, I know, and you will know what is right for you at the time. But when you see those brown puppy eyes and smell that puppy, milky breath - it melts my heart!! :lovestruc

Thank you to everyone who has sent their wishes . It means so much that people I don't even really know, care enough to comment. Skye will be sadly missed, but I know it will get easier to think of her, without tears. A great big hug and pat to all your fur babies - and I still love to see everyone's photos - they are special little people in our lives and they are treasured for ever.
