View Full Version : Do you guys post on other photoboards/sites?

I am just curious. I love to learn from other folks... this place is the best but you guys don't post much :rotfl2: or enough to keep me busy.

I was wondering if you guys post photos in other places?

I sometimes post on www.phototakers.com (http://www.phototakers.com) but not often. It is a serious photog board and they are a bit clickish, but they have some great info and photos to learn from.

I post over at nikonians.org, but there is far more traffic in general over here (at least compared to the topics I look at which are generally only the D50 forum, Nikkor forum and 3rd Party lens forum).

I lurk on ILP.com but they too are a clickish group. Heaven forbid you are not perfect and all be dog gonned if you are not the Photoshop King/Queen ;( Makes me mad, I'd say 95-99% of the photos posted there are heavily photoshopped. And if your photos even remotely look like they are from a point and shoot-- forget it.

I asked the same questions there, as I did here and got not ONE reply :( I thought they were good questions (flash and lens).

I want a fun, friendly place that will teach me to be a better photographer.

I have learned a lot from www.photography-on-the.net (http://www.photography-on-the.net) which is primarily a Canon forum, but all are welcome. Mid way down the page is a link to the actual forums. Very friendly with loads of very good advice.

Rachel - I check in at the Digital Photography School forums (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/) everyday. I've only posted a few times but folks there are very nice and I've learned tons from reading their posts.

i made the mistake of posting a few times on there, mostly got totally ignored ( like on one thread every single other post one of the mods responded to but mine :confused3 :rotfl: ) and got really blasted with not constructive criticism, just blatant meanness :scared1: from a different moderator there when i asked for advice about a photo( that i might say when i asked the same ? here got lots of helpful advice) . it seems like a lot of them posted to some flickr site before and kind of had a "club" going...maybe not so much now that there are more posters there, this was one of the first weeks the forum was up and running...
so i figured they must not like my "kind" and due to my lack ofadoring verbal abuse :) i took all my posts off there .
i still occasionally read the newsletter wouldn't make the mistake of posting there unless i develop a rhino hide , i mean they honestly made me cry :rotfl:

That's awful!! I'm so sorry. I haven't had that experience there at all. The few posts I've made have gotten very nice responses and people have been pretty helpful. Although, I gotta say, no one is as nice as people on the Disney boards in my experience.

There are more than 1000 people over there now so maybe you're right in that the original group was cliquish and these newer follks are nicer. What a bummer though.

Ugh, you mean "mommies with cameras"? That is the biggest bunch of lemmings I've ever encountered. I've gotten far better (and REASONED) responses here than I'd ever hope to get over there. If you post anything but a cookie cutter image, you'll either get ignored or blasted. Cutesy rules the day!

I like www.dpreview.com. They have some excellent folks on their forums (as well as some jerks...) and I have benefitted greatly by the expertise of many of them. One very beneficial aspect of the forums, at least for me, is being able to see posted examples of pix taken with different cameras and lenses. This was very helpful in recent decision-making prior to major purchase.

Besides dpreview which has already been discussed - I also post occasionally on Nikon Cafe (http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/index.php), Digital Grin (http://www.dgrin.com/index.php), Tampa Forums (http://www.tampaforums.com/forums/art-photography/) (Local forum w/ Art & Photo Section), and Skyscraper City (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=346) (Work related- but has lots of Architectural Photography)

I truly do enjoy the DISboards as most of the others- particularly the 'serious photography' sites are way to stuffy and clickish for me.

You sound about like me. I read many of these, but almost never post. It is not that I do not think that I will be welcome; I just don't have the time to keep up with threads on too many places. I basically just read the ones with subjects that interest me. You cannot beat the group we have going here right now. Even though we do not always agree on things, it never seems to get hostile. We also do not seem to ignore people that browse over here from other boards. It does not hurt that many of us also lurk on other DIS boards. I usually avoid posting on the community board b/c it just moves sooooo fast. Posts move to the second page in a matter of minutes over there.

I like Fred Miranda site (http://www.fredmiranda.com/). Lots of really great photos and work by some serious amateurs and pros as well. I lurk mostly, but have learned a bunch from the some of the posts.

I also check out the Strobist site (http://strobist.blogspot.com/) and the Flicker accompanying site with several different groups.

Sorry to hear that you got a bad response Jann! Some of these guys/gals are pretty full of themselves.......:sad2:

These are exactly who I mean! I have never been so hurt by comments (and not even to me!) then as this group. I have done very little posting because of the harsh comments. And it is on the side that is non-commercial! And in the beginner's forums. :(

What amazes me is how much people photoshop their photos. I am talking about people who have the whole studio set up, the top camera and equipment and they still need to heavily photoshop photos! And then have the kahunas to go off on someone who is shooting straight out of the camera and to be honest it is a NICE photo.

I went to an ILP meet last Spring and this lady had an amazing home studio. Lights, the works. Well she showed up photos from IN the studio and some from outside... *I* take better photos then she does (coming right off the camera) but I do not know how to photoshop. She was charging over $1000 for each package! Kudos to her for knowing some amazing photoshop techniques.
AND boy her excuses... wow! Why they came out crummy... She blamed the parent (the little girl had dark skin with a white dress/hat on and the clothes were blown out bad) and I can't remember what the little boy's 'problem' was but it was not her fault... :sad2:

I think that is what makes me so mad. They add a 'little filtering' to the photos (in reality it is a lot of filtering) to perfect their photos. They do not tell you how much post editing they actually do. Makes you feel so stupid because you will never achieve what they have (of course not, you don't photoshop -not to the extent they do).
It is fine if you photoshop, but for pete's sake, tell people! Don't make people think it came out of the camera looking that way! Believe me, they do tell people that (it's right out of the camera!) when you can tell it is photoshopped!

I wanted to get side work taking photos here in Phoenix (which a lot of them do) but it will never happen. I can't even remotely compete.

It is a great place *if* all you do is read. I have learned some great things. Only by reading, never commenting unless I am 110% lost and really want to know something. Watch out though if you post.

I just found this link which has links to great tips. Again, I just read. I think my last post was sometime last spring.

Oh - I totally forgot - I also check out The Magic in Pixels forums (http://www.themagicinpixels.com/forum/index.php) everyday. They are relatively new. They are one of the Disney boards that I was talking about when I said Disney folks are really nice.

Thanks Barrie, I am going to check out the Magic in Pixels.

I do like DPReview (I have been there as long as I have been here if not longer), but there is mostly technical. I do not see a lot of people sharing photos like you do here :) They do, but there is generally a reason behind it.

Man I am picky! LOL

While POTN has taught me a lot, I have one major grudge with those guys, they have cost me a ton of money. The first time I went there, I had a Rebel XT and kit lens - that was it. Now I have three more lenses, two bags and a flash (with assorted filters, cards, batteries, etc). With a few more lenses, tripod, monopod, etc on the way.

For those of us who try to compensate for a lack of talent with better equipment, that place is dangerous!
