Hey, what if we all just invade Chicago or somewhere like that....somewhere in the middle? :D

OMG, you guys are so funny! :)
Jay, of course you can come. It wouldn't be the same without you, and the family! :D
Tia, you'll never find airfare to Barto!!!!! LOL I can spit from one end of the town to the other! (no, I really wouldn't do that!) I fly out of Allentown, PA. It's only 30 minutes from my house. You can fly to Philly, too. But that's a hour and half to me.
Dayna, I would never ask you to behave! What fun would that be!?!?!? Besides, you don't have to be on your best behavior here. We're VERY laid back. All I ask is that you flush the toilets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D
I have a pool, not a big one, but enough for swimming in shifts. LOL We have a pond with fish, frogs, and maybe a snake. (ick) We have plenty of room for volleyball, softball, or whatever. (be nice)
But, if it would be easier to meet in the middle, we can do that, too. (hey, isn't there a song about meeting in the middle?!) I just don't want to wait for a whole year to come around again!!!!!

I can't wait another year, either...which is why I plan to return in April. :)

At some point in the summer I will drive my kids to church camp near Johnstown, PA. I want to hang out on the east coast afterwards to meet DISers.....so maybe Barto could be on THAT trip! :)

OK Barb's house is BIG!!!! Her yard is real BIG so you can all put up tents....oh by the way if everyone coming to Barb's house this summer I'll definately be there, but I'll have to bring the girls. Little Zach would have 3 built in baby sitters.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I am about 90 minutes northwest of Philly. We're about that same distant from Hershey, too. We're 35-40 minutes from Reading (the outlet capital of the world) and about 35-40 minutes from Allentown (think Billy Joel song). We're also about 25-30 minutes from Dorney Park, which is an amusement park owned by the same people as Cedar Point. Centrally located to all sorts of interesting things, including Pennsylvania Dutch Country if you're into things like trains, outlets and great food. Lancaster has some great train attractions-model and full size. :)
I'm more than willing to have a get together here, if you all think you want to work on this. :D

DaisyDebbie

Well you're just a hop, skip and a jump from here. I make it to Hershey in about 3 1/2 hours. Sounds like fun. Been wanting to take the kids to Lancaster, hmmm, this could work.:)

Hey, John! Does this mean I have to plan another Cedar Point & Six Flags WoA trip this Memorial Day? And yes, Barto is definitelycloser for you than Cape Cod!

Barry, you've got to put Dorney on your park itinerary. :D Maybe we can organize some parks meets along with going to Barb's.

Now about those tents...... Iwill NEVER get Barry to stay in a tent. He is from Brooklyn & far too much a city boy for that to happen. I'll pull out the AAA book & start looking there for someplace to stay.

I talked to Sue about bringing the family and making a weekend of the event. Perhaps we could visit Philly or Easton during our trip eastward. Who knows. I also mentioned Memorial Day to Sue and she thought that it would be a lot of fun to make our picnic an annual event.

Ok, now we're talking!!!! :D The best hotel near me would be the Comfort Inn in Pottstown. That's only 15 minutes from me and it's very nice. We need to come up with a good date for everyone. Should it be a Saturday/Sunday event or just one day?
Hey, John, we might just be able to make a Memorial weekend trip! :)

You guys need to give me some input for dates. I was leaning towards the end of July, or beginning of August. We're on vacation at the end of June/early July, and late August is when the boys go back to college. I already mentioned the Comfort Inn. There is also a mom and pop motel about 5 minutes from me. It's a no frills type of place, but basically pretty clean. There are also two or three B & B's near me. I haven't been inside any of them, but I know the reputation of 2 and they come very highly rated. So, we need dates here and then I can work on accommodations! :D :D :D

Towncrier's for Memorial Day & Barb's at the end of July or early Aug???? Sounds good to me!

I think I'd better get another job & start saving up for all this!

Barry, to do Coastermaina, you go th John's for Memorial day, then 6 Flags WoA in Aurora OH (right near John's!), then Cedar point for Coastermania! We did that trip last year! It was great!

I'm about an hour east of Philly - for anyone familiar with NJ, I'm 10 minutes outside of Ocean City. I already have plans for WDW over the 4th of July, and want to make one more trip in mid/late August before my AP runs out! This would be fantastic!

Why don't we work from these three dates and see what we get? July 20/21, July 27/28, and August 3/4. Do you want to do this on just Saturday or should we get together Sunday morning, too? We could do some sort of brunch before everyone heads home. Thoughts?

Any dates are good for me in the summer. We'll be there! Catie has been reading the post and wants to know if she'll be able to sleep in the house...and Amanda wants to know if there is going to be a version of Drinks Around The World. She said we could call it Drinks Around The Ott House!!! (A drink in the living room, a drink on the patio, one by the pool, one by the pond, etc.) She thought she was really clever with that idea and made me promise to post it. The girls are already getting excited, they just like coming down to your house! What does Bill think of all this?

Normally we would be down at WDW during end of July/beginning of August, but this year we are going to do the Disney Cruise so that shoots the WDW budget big time. So anytime this summer should work. I checked with Sue and Memorial Day is a go. More details to follow as we get closer to the actual date.

Dayna - Our house is about 4 hours closer to yours than Barbs (if that matters), so you won't have to pack quite so many CD's. :)

This is getting more and more exciting! Memorial Day with TC sounds great! Barb...just pick a weekend...any weekend! (Although I like July 27 and 28 the best! :))And while I'm that far east, it would be a good time to meet some DISers in NY and NJ, as well as head to the DC area . :D

Just checked Expedia for hotels in Pottstown, and there's also a Holiday Inn Express, a Days Inn, and a Travelodge. For my preferred dates (July 27-28), the Holiday Inn Express is a little less expensive than the Comfort Inn, and I think the HIExpress has a more substantial continental breakfast than Comfort Inns.

Barb - There are a bunch of airports that your DH can use that are "nearby". I have personally flown out of Wadsworth (to Orlando of all places). The airport in Medina is literally in my sister's backyard (about 30 minutes south of us). For a slightly larger airport, there's Cuyahoga County community airport which is about 30 minutes north of us. Just let me know and we can come pick you up if you decide to fly in.

How many days until Memorial Day???

Barb
12-11-2001, 01:45 PM
Ok, so far we have a vote for July27 & 28. Anyone else have a preference?
Nancy, stay away from the Travelodge. It's just plain nasty. ick And, if I'm thinking of the right place, the Days Inn is worse. The Holiday Inn Express is nice, but further away from my house. The Comfort Inn is the nicest and closest place to me. (about 10-15 minutes) As soon as we nail down a date, I can do some investigating for room rates and such.

I'm really looking forward to this! Barto, PA will never know what hit it! It's a very small, kind of backward area here. (there's rumors of inbreeding up in the hills!) Should I contact the Comfort Inn about rooms? For what nights? Or should I check out the mom and pop motel? I was told last night that it's been well taken care of since the new owners have it. But, it fills up fast during the summer. We also have a raceway (dirt track) just 5-10 minutes from my house. I suspect that's where the racer's stay. Anyone into racing ever hear of Grandview Raceway? If you're spiritual at all, Barto is the home of the Shrine for Padre Pio. He was the priest that suffered from stigmata. We get buses from all over the country coming here to visit the shrine. It's really quite beautiful. Ok, enough travel talk-who needs/wants rooms?

disneycub
12-12-2001, 11:06 AM
::checking calendar, checking Mapquest::

Barb, you are 1,712 miles away from Denver, which would mean I would by flying-for-real. So I'd probably come in the 26th, fly back out on the 28th, so guess I'd need a room for 2 nights. Then again, there's a strong possibility that I will be living in Orlando by that time, but I'd still need a place to hang my (princess) hat. I've never been to Pennsylvania afore....

NancyIL
12-12-2001, 11:17 AM
I think people will most likely want rooms for Friday and Saturday nights. (I know I will.) The nice thing about the Comfort Inn is that it provides a continental breakfast. The AAA/internet rate for July 26 and 27 is $71.10, and there's a "Home for the Holidays" rate of $69. Wonder if I should reserve it now?

** Surprisingly enough, Priceline has hotel rooms in Pottstown! Once the dates are definite, I may just give Priceline a shot for a 2* hotel!

Let me see what happens firstest, Barb. So, I know this has been addressed before somewhere in the note, but is Erie the closest airport to Barto?

Barb
12-12-2001, 02:05 PM
If you're flying, the closest and most convenient airport to me is Allentown, PA. The next closest is Philly, which is about a hour to a hour 1/2 away depending on time of time and traffic.
I just called the Comfort Inn to inquire about some sort of group rate. I estimated about 6 rooms. She said they don't start group rates until we need 10 rooms. So she recommended that everyone just make their own reservations. Using AAA or AARP would get you a rate of $71 a night.(is that what you got Nancy or did you do better?) She also said the hotel was completely remodeled last year and the continental breakfast (as Nancy mentioned) was upgraded to include a make your waffle station. I've been over there a few times and it a nice place. Here's the phone number directly to the hotel: 610-326-5000
I also called the local mom & pop motel (the Mel Dor Hotel).A room with a queen is $48 plus tax. A room with 2 doubles is $51 plus tax. They do have availability as of right now. Phone #610-367-2626
They do have a continental breakfast, but no pool. (the Comfort Inn has a heated outdoor pool) I haven't had to stay there in years, but I'm told it's kept up nice and it's clean.
Oh, boy-we're making plans now! I even have a friend who runs a butcher shop/meat market lined up for food! :D

NancyIL
12-12-2001, 02:13 PM
Not a huge difference in price, but if you make your Comfort Inn reservations online (at www.comfortinn.com ) - there's a "Home for the Holidays" rate that's $69 for a room with 2 double beds.

I LOVE making plans! It's half the fun of going on a trip. :D

Book me a room at the "Ott Motel" We'll probably be there a few days early, I don't know when we'd leave because we'll probably drive up to CT to visit Kim.
Just an FYI for everyone else...we've stayed in the Comfort Inn many times and it's really nice. It's also very easy to get to Barb's from there. For those that are into history, Valley Forge is pretty close. This sounds like it's going to be tons of fun. The kids are getting really excited.( So am I, for that matter!!)

Boy, I miss reading this thread for a day or two, and it sounds like everything is planned! I like the datesof 7/26 & 7/27! :D I'm on my way to the Comfort Inn site shortly! :D

Guess one of the benefits of not being able to sleep is that I can catch up on things!

Now, how many Nancys are going to be there? So far I've counted 3 of us! :D

Well, okay, I'm still up! :D

I just booked the Comfort inn Pottstown for the 26th & 27th. :bounce:

I know our trip will include a stop at Dorney Park in Allentown. Right now I'm planning that for the 28th (4pm admission) & 29th (all day). Anyone else want to join us? I'm not sure if we will do any other parks on this trip. Depends on what season passes we decide to get this year & how the vacation budget looks, but I'm leaning towards adding Knobels to the list as well.

By the way Patrick.....next time let her find it herslef...I do not think that you needed to ICQ, IM, email, phone...sky write....Brat! You wanted me to get in trouble....lol :p

Keep the fun and details comin' though.....I love reading this thread. :)

Thanks Barb, I can use all the support I can muster since glo is saying these terrible things about me. For the record, YES SHE DID KICK ME. It was for no reason, from the back, a sneak attack. To top it off it hurt. I do not forget such things:smooth: :p Glo, I will speak with Marsha anytime I like, especially if you are acting up again:D

I'll go to Dorney Park and Knobel's with you, Barry and Nancy. I was also considering going to Hershey Park too. I'm trying to think of the park with Lightning Racer. I think it is in PA, but I'm not sure.

WebmasterBarry

I checked www.rcdb.com and Lightning Racer is in Hersheypark. I'd like to visit the following parks in PA:

Hershey Park
Knobel's
Kennywood
Dorney Park

That will be 4 days and 2 days at Barb Con. The first and last day will be a flight out.

Kennywood is supposed to be an awesome amusement park. It's truly one of the oldies, but goodies. Sounds like you have a plan, Barry.
Now, Glo and Patrick, I thought you too were buddies?!? ;) :D You go through all this stuff here, but you're inseparable in person-so we all know you too really do like each other, FOR REAL! :D:p :p :D

I'll definately be there with the 3 girls, they were talking about maybe going to Sesame Place..neat waterpark for the younger kids. Hershey Park sounds like fun, I haven't been there since before I was married.

We went to Hershey Park last year. Lightening Racer is awesome, but so is their Wildcat! They also have Great Bear, a suspended coaster, and an old woodie, Comet, I think that gives a good ride. There's a couple of other coasters there, too, but we didn't like them as well. Oh, and their Wild Mouse is good, too.

Kennywood is a nice little park, but based on our experience there DO NOT go there on Friday night! The crowd that came in at 5 PM was extermely rough! It was fine all day, then all of a sudden......phew! We just got out of there fast. It is a pretty long drive across PA to get there from Barb's, so I don't think we will be doing that one. I hear their newest coaster, Phantom's Revenge is a pretty good ride, though.

Knobels is a small, historic family park with a great carousel (one of the 2 we've found where you can still catch the brass ring - the other being at Coney Island). They have 2 great coasters, the Phoenix, and a new woodie whose name escapes me now because I haven't ridden it yet. Phoenix has incredible air time, especially from the back. :bounce:

Dorney is a definite for us because it's, well, right there! Besides, I really liked Steel Force, I want to ride their new suspended coaster, Talon, and they have a great waterpark.

I'm thinking at this point we will drive East from Dorney to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ because it is also a great park with about 10 coastyers (I think) and a drive through Safari. We will probably also have Six Flags seasons passes again. It's also a fairly short drive from Allentown to NJ, and on the way home, sort of, for us.

Barry, we'd love to have you join us at any of the parks we're going to, & anyone else who wants to come, too. Oh, and Barry, I promise NO SCAVENGER HUNTS! :earseek:

So I think after all Nancy's park reviews here, the itinerary we will be following for Barb-Con is:
Fri 7/26 - Drive to PA. Check in at Comfort Inn. Opening reception?????
Sat 7/26-Meet at Barb's
Sun 7/28 - Farewell Breakfast meet at Barb's???? (are you doing that, Barb?)
Drive to Dorney for 4PM admission (we may go earlier if we get Cedar Point season
passes :D Dorney is open till 10 PM.
Mon 7/29 -Dorney Park
Tues 7/30 - Six Flags Great Adventure
Wed 7/31 - Great Adventure Animal Safari, maybe some time in park then drive home :(

I might fly in on the Saturday before Barb Con and leave on Sunday afternoon. That'll give me about 8-9 days of fun! I may take a day off on Monday just to recover. I wish I had an extra day off from DIS Con to recover! :)

I feel ignorant, but where in PA is Barto? What's the nearest airport serving the city?

Ya know....., we usually try and plan a summer trip to visit relatives in CT and NY. I also have an uncle in Wyomissing, is that anywhere near you Barb?

Barb
12-16-2001, 11:24 PM
WOW! Nancy, I can't believe you have this all mapped out already! Yes, I thought we'd do something Friday night, for who ever's here. Don't know what yet, that will come later. Saturday is the picnic and Sunday we can do some sort of brunch type thing at my house before everyone goes their own way.
Barry, Allentown is the closest airport (& the most convenient) to me. I am northwest of Philly. Closest bigger town would be Pottstown. If anyone is an American Legion baseball fan, they would know the town of Boyertown. (which is closer, still) It's a huge baseball town when it comes to Legion ball.
Leslie, Wyomissing is about 35 minutes from me. So, it's not far at all. I shop at the malls in Wyomissing all the time.
FYI-there are no straight roads in PA, and you can't get there from here. Rules to live by if you live in PA. :) :)
Great, Steve! How cool!! :D
OMG, Pat, that is a great picture! John, you look practically devious!! ;) See, I knew Patrick couldn't be as bad as all that! :p :p
