On check-in day (which will be Monday 1/22 for my son) is there time to get moved in and still do a Wal-Mart run? Is there any free time for errands the first few days before classes\work begin?

Haven't done it yet.. but will do it this season.
You have time between check-in and your first day of work (and Traditions) to do everything.
Tell your son to look out for Sabrina from disboards. :o)

As long as you get checked-in before, say, noon or one o'clock, you'll have plenty of time. If I recall correctly, all you have to do after you check-in is go to The Commons (I think) to go to a thing that Price Management does to let everyone know the rules of the apartments. I think that's sometime between four and six. I'm thinking six. So you have most of the day to check-in and go to Wal-Mart or whatever.
I had time to get checked-in, get settled-in, have lunch at Bahama Breeze, go to Wal-Mart, and lounge around the apartment and get to know my roommates a bit.
And, like Sabrina said, you'll have time after that if you forget or don't get the chance to do something.
Plenty of time the first day or two to run to Wal-Mart. Go to the one here:

Direction are from Chatham Square, they would obviously need to be adjusted if you are coming from Vista Way.
Do NOT go to the Walmart on S Kirkman Road, which was the first one we found. It is terrible, and way too hard to get to. Goodluck. Thanks.

There's a Wal-Mart only about 5 minutes up the road from CP housing. And, yes, you have an entire afternoon and evening to help unpack and get loaded up.
