DME combined with downtown disney check in

Is it possible when returning from orlando to check our bags in at downtown disney (we are flying virgin) and still use the magical express to get us back to the airport?

You can do this but the downside is the DME buses tend to leave quite early to get you to the airport so you may not gain that much extra time.

Are you flying just virgin or through virgin holidays? If the latter then there is no charge, if just flights then you will have a charge to pay which I think is $5 each person

Yes you can. We did this in December. We checked in at DTD in the morning, then went back to the Yacht Club in time for the DME to pick us up at 2:30pm (Our flight was at 6:30pm) We had to pay $5 each to use DTD checkin as we had booked flights and hotels separately.
