View Full Version : Hello??? What's with the salmon around here?

I am a salmon-lover. You really have to botch it up for me to dislike it.

However, during my short December trip this year, I tried the salmon in several places, and it invariably fell far short of what I expected. My first time was at Sunshine Seasons in the Land. Some kind of "grilled salmon and rice". It had a mushy texture, and very little flavor.
Next time was at Cape May. Again, mushy, a little slimy....and really fishy. It was clearly too old, and a wonder I didn't get sick from it. Of course, all the food there was substandard as far as seafood goes.
Next was Boma. I held out hope for this one, as everything I've ever had there has been really, really good. But again, tasteless. The texture and all was better, and no old fishiness to it, but absolutely not what I'm accustomed to.

Anyone know why WDW can't do salmon?

Hmm, the only response I have is:

Artist Point.

I hear the salmon at Le Cellier is good, too. But I haven't had it there.

Yeah, I almost had the salmon at AP, but went with the buffalo instead, since I'd just had salmon for lunch. It looked like it would have been the best bet for preparation, too. I know I shouldn't judge the whole "world" from such limited experiences...but it was so surprising to get so many "bad salmon" meals in a row!

We've had pretty consistently great salmon, all over WDW, though Artist Point's is a little more special than the rest. Personally, though, I am not terribly impressed with the fact that they do salmon so well -- it's not a tough fish to cook properly -- it's very forgiving.

I AGREE!!! How on earth does a place so consistently botch up something that normally is so easy to do? Wondering if they got a shipment of bargain-basement salmon the week I was there.

Wondering if they got a shipment of bargain-basement salmon the week I was there. That sounds like a distinct possibility, since we've had so many salmon meals at WDW that were very good. One possibility is that they had to switch suppliers for a while.

As an Alaskan I am obligated to mention that most likely it was farmed salmon which every Alaskan knows is sub par and not even as good as Chum (which is what we feed our dogs). It's not salmon season so probably it was frozen and thawed. Friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon. (Well I've done my Alaskan duty for the year, whew).

You ordered salmon in a counter service restaurant and at two buffet restaurants. I wouldn't expect great food in that setting.

You would have a better experience at a table service restaurant which should cook your meal to order.

If it were all the food at the counter or buffet that was like this, I'd agree. But like always, the food at Boma was fantastic, and I enjoyed the other foods at the CS restaurants. It was only the salmon.

I have to agree with you there...nothing tops wild Pacific salmon. On the east coast, though, it always comes to us frozen. Even then, it's pretty darn good.
I usually don't object to the farmed stuff we get around here, although I do prefer the Pacific (even frozen and thawed). But this stuff bordered on inedible (if you knew me, you know what a harsh statement that really is!).

Ditto. Or go to Seattle!

I've had salmon at Cape May & Boma. It was better at Boma, but have to restrain your expectations as salmon generally doesn't do well at buffets. I've also had counter service salmon at Tusker House twice. Not bad at all and an excellent value for $8! But the salmon I've had at California Grill and Artist Point was as good as anything I had in Seattle.

That stinks! I usually eat tons of Salmon at WDW. It's usually the only fish choice, lol! I usually have great salmon. One of my favorites is at lunch at LTT. It is over spagetti squash and pumpkin bread - YUMMY.

Years ago the Prime Time had a Salmon they called Grampa's Fishing Trip - It was my favorite!

THE BEST Salmon I've ever had at WDW was at the Tusker House counter service restaurant at Animal Kingdom. I'm still thinking about the hunk of fish!

I had the salmon at Tusker House last year, too, and it was great! I believe I also had it at Boma and Sunshine Seasons last year (I'm likely to grab whatever salmon I can, I love it so much), and don't remember ever having a bad piece that time around. This is why I think they got a bad shipment this year.
