This question might be better for the cruise boards, but I thought my fellow GLBT community could answer this with more honesty/experience. How does the crew/CM handle if someone becomes ill or injured:sick: ? Do they allow a same sex partner to be involved in treatments or decisions? :confused3

We just got back from a 4-night cruise, but I can't say I know the answer to this one. Neither of us required medical treatment while we were onboard.

I have been to the cruise medical center for treatment. I wasn't seriously ill, I was dehydrated due to the flu and needed to be on IV for about 3 hours. The treatment I received was excellent even with a major medical emergency happening at the same time (someone on crew was injured and picked up by helicopter). My partner dropped me off and picked me. Instructions were given to her since I was too sick - there was no problem at all. They were all very nice and the nurse who inserted my IV was so kind. I have 100% confidence in their professionalism.
Edited to add that the reason she didn't stay with me was not because she was asked to leave. It was because it was our day at the Castaway Cay and there was no point in us both missing it - I asked her to go and take pictures!!

thanks Iankh and Daisy-J&D,
I don't expect any problems, but just checking. My partner has MS, so there is always a possibility we could have a problem.

If that is a big concern, why not have legal papers drawn to allow you to legally make decisions if necessary. If you have it in writing, they have to comply... period. It would be best to do something like this now, so you never lose the power to make the decisions, whether on a cruise or at home.

We have all the paperwork possible, just is a pain to have to remember to bring paperwork. It really isn't a major concern, I was just curious if anyone has had any issues. If it seemed like there was a problem, I would get out the paperwork, make copies and put it in th lugage. On a side note, I really am not concerned. We are traveling in a group and one of my partners sisters is also going. So no worries for us.

Mike & Iankh, how did you do in terms of seating arrangements? We'll be cruising on Feb 4th for the first time. We were not raised by wolves but were a tad concerned about having to make small talk with a tablefull of diners remarking how we *muuuust* be sisters because we look so much alike :cutie:

I recommend that you both wear "I'm not gay but my girlfriend is" t-shirts to dinner the first night. That should get the conversation rolling. :)

Yeah...we went on our first cruise during our honeymoon and it took most of the table (5 couples including us) the full week to figure out that we were a couple rather than friends. This despite answering their first night "how do you know each other" question with "we're married".
That said, I have found that it is easiest to just be blunt and matter-of-fact to avoid the continued small-talk issues. Overall, I found the table conversation reasonable on both of the two cruises that I have taken. Enjoy!

We've been on 14 DCL cruises mostly all on the Magic including the eastbound panama repo and we're booked on the trans-atlantic westbound repo this august. We've never had any problems with us being a couple. In fact we actually were invited to the captains table at Palo's special room this past september on the Wonder's 11day sailing. We're treated as old friends/family as we know alot of the crew on the Magic. Also our friends(gay couple also)sail with us every year.
Most of your fellow cruisers/table mates never have a problem with us being gay--heck our 1st cruise on the Wonder we met a Dominatrix from L.A.

Joanjett .... hmmm ... mealtime, well that was an issue for us. I had requested that we have a table to ourselves and when we arrived for our first meal, we were at a table with 6 other people. I went and spoke to the head waiter, maitre de, or whatever they call the big cheese girl in charge and told him that we would much prefer to sit by ourselves and we were sure our tablemates would be much happier if we were sitting by ourselves. So, we got our own table, and happiness was abounding.
Not that we're antisocial or anything, but we can be rather shy as a couple and sometimes, people take one look at my other half, Hisselfness and for some reason, he scares the poop out of them, poor sheltered creatures that they are. Though a few kids did think he was one of the pirate characters, which was equally as funny.
The waitstaff will definitely try to accomodate you, and you will have a fabulous time. We loved it so much that we're going again!

We're both pretty outgoing, and like to meet new people. I have never encountered any sort of problems on a DCL cruise. The cast as well as the guests have always been great.
Now on Carnival........hmmm I'll skip that story for now. Just think Mr. and Mrs. Howell from Gilligans Island!:lmao:

There's also that perennial favorite t-shirt, "That's Doctor D____ to You."
Anybody, by any chance, cruising in mid-March? We'll be on the 3/15 3-day. Would love to say hey to some kindred spirits.

So basically you are recommending we show up on our first night to the table carrying a quart of Jack Daniels and scare the living bejeezus out of the table mates and trick THEM into changing their dining assignment?

:rotfl2: See my above post regarding the Carnival cruise! Mr. and Mrs. "Howell" were not amused, the people at the table next to us on the other hand begged us to have dinner with them the rest of the cruise! Oh well, it was a little crowded the first night anyway, now we have more room at the table!
Some people dont know how to have a good time I guess.....popcorn::

I've browsed these boards before, but I am brand new to any kind of posting forums like this, so not exactly sure of all the "etiquette". But my boyfriend and I have done 2 Disney Cruises and everyone and everything about it was great. At Palo they brought us out a special chocolate plate that said "Happy Anniversary" on it. Not only did the staff make us feel special, but even tables around us commented with "Congratulations" and such. We had no bad experience. And of course, we felt we were actually treated better than many, especially by the gay staff. We are booked already for the Eastbound Transatlantic in May. Any other gay couples going on that cruise by chance?

I'm glad to hear this. I had heard that DCL was more gay-positive than Disney's theme parks and resorts are in some regards. We are taking our first Disney cruise in about a month (4 night Bahamas), our next one this December for our 8th anniversary (7 night western Carib), and are thinking of booking the 15-night westbound Panama Canal crossing for May 2008!
I would have loved to do one of the transatlantic crossings, but they didn't work for us schedule-wise. I am sure you guys will have an awesome time.

You will love the Panama Canal Cruise. We did the eastbound in 2005 and loved it. We met several other gay couples on board and have on every Disney cruise we have taken(5). We are doing a 10 night Med. in August and are considering one of the repo cruises through the canal again since the ports are different.

Make that 5! We are seriously looking at booking the Westbound PC (90% sure we'll do it). We went in 2005 and had a wonderful time (minus the trading pin fiasco) and look forward to a repeat. We will then tack on a few days at Disneyland and take 3 full weeks off from work! (I just heard my boss screaming, how odd :lmao: ).
Once bookings open, and we all determine who may/may not be going, maybe we can get fresh thread going on this board versus the ones on the Cruise board.

The only thing that may be a rub for us for the westbound Panama Canal cruise is the number of days, 15. It's something we really want to do.
I would also love to go to Disneyland afterwards, but am not sure I can squeeze in another couple of days of vacation.
I sort of wish this was a 10 day cruise just so I could easily fit in DL.

Be careful. The prices tend to go up as more people book and by May the price could be significantly higher, even with the deals when booking on board. We are planning on booking on Jan 31 and seeing if we get a better deal while on board later.

I came to lurk... I'm trying to get my Aunt (60ish, single) to come onboard. I keep trying to convince her that Disney is lesbian friendly!!!!
For everyone else on this thread... anytime you are on a cruise that I'm on and you get an unfriendly dinner mate you come find my family and join us!!! You will always be a welcome addition to our table. One of our favorite parts about the cruises is meeting new people, couples (with or without kids!) from all parts of the world.

I found you on the other thread. Will stay in touch through that thread. Good thing that they are Gay Friendly since I already told everyone on the thread that we will be celebrating our anniverary. I came out of the closet ages ago and now it is hard for me to even stay in the house. I have found that it I take a matter of fact approach and and up front I get positive responses. Those that don't want to deal with it don't regonize what is being said and as such do not react to the information. I figure if others can talk about anniveraries so can I. It has worked well for 19 years and I plan to continue to be up fount. I am however aware that not everyone is this open and I am very careful when dealing with kids. I believe that it is up to the parents when to introduce the child to this info and their beliefs around it. Lois

My hunny and I are long time WDW and DCL people - she has at least 10 cruises to her name and I have 7...we have found that in the first 2 or 3 days one of us wears a pride shirt of some sort - voila...we get all kinds of "attention" from the cast and other family. This has worked to our benefit no matter where we have traveled! at the World, Land or ships.
Since she has a better collection than I do - she usually is the culprit, but her mom has a few shirts that say things like "I'm not gay - my daugher and her wife are"
We all travel together and that tends to toss people a loop or two - since I am between them in age, we have had some interesting mis-conceptions:lmao:
For the most part - I personally have had only one gay issue in all my trips to WDW (as a DVC member I go about 5 times a year), and that one was a non cast member. I was on the Magic in 2002, and had horrible table mates - they were rude, nasty and very verbal about how all gay's should be castrated/"fixed" and should never be allowed near children, yadda yadda, yadda. The (now ex) girlfriend and I were so upset we couldn't eat. The next night we ask the Head Chicky in Charge to move us - she did so, apologizing that the people we were going to be seated with didn't speak English...well, turns out they did (they were old friends who spoke D'agalo <spelling??> and since there were no others at the table - they reverted to their native lanuage) as soon as we joined them we got along famously and we were SO happy the Head Chicky in Charge switched us!! She was really upset about the first table's behavior and actually got them banned from the bars due to overly intoxicated misbehavior.

If that is a big concern, why not have legal papers drawn to allow you to legally make decisions if necessary. If you have it in writing, they have to comply... period. It would be best to do something like this now, so you never lose the power to make the decisions, whether on a cruise or at home.
A medical power of attorney is such a great thing to have anyway, even at home. Great idea! Your doctors may be aware of your relationship, but you never know what happens if you have to go to an emergency room or another doctor at home too. Additionally, I would "think," regardless of an official policy, so many people travel with non-related people, Disney would be sensitive to the ill person, not wanting them to be alone, etc...

Hey -- Does anyone know how they introduce "non-traditional" families as you board? It will be me, my partner, and his 9 year-old daughter. Just wondering!

The crew member with the microphone will ask you for your family name as you board. Just tell them how you would like to be announced. We gave both our names and they announced them both.
We got a very warm reception from the crew and our dinnermates were delightful.

Yes, although this depends on them being able to understand your names. They couldn't seem to understand any of our names and we got introduced as something odd--can't seem to remember exactly what.

That makes it even better. We would have just walked around calling each other by our new names for the rest of the cruise.

Hi Chris,
A) Leave it to my very very good friend Erik to beat me to a response to you! Erik, I know you'll be reading this--you work FAST :lmao:
B) Yes, we will obviously meet you on the ship. I see that you just joined the Disboards. There is a whole thread dedicated to this Repo cruise. There are currently 341 pages, so you would NEVER be able to start from the beginning, but go to this thread, and start with page 143 if you're interested. There are at least 3 gay couples we're aware of on the cruise, and one lesbian couple, and now you guys. Our other Dis friend Kelly (milestogo) has renamed this from the Repo cruise to the "gay cruise" :rotfl:

Now I'm fairly new to the boards myself, so I don't know if that link will work, but if not, cut and paste. Take care, thanks for the post!

If you want to get linked directly to page 143 on the repo cruise board (5/12/07), here's the link:
http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1064911&page=143
The top post on that page is the one that Chris (Scoobypop) described that has lots of details about the trip and the group we've got going. What stateroom are you guys in, if you don't mind me asking?

We are on the June 16 med cruise and the Aug Repo next year. Is anyone on either one of those????? I hate to think we are the only one's on the June 16 med. We've had such great luck in the past meeting other "Family" disney cruisers.

Donna here - we are going to the Med, but not until the Aug 8 cruise. I couldn't get us booked on the Aug 08 Panama Canal, but I will keep trying to and convince Joi after I do it. We are booked on the 5 day double dip after the Panama Canal cruise. Hope you guys are doing well and Alessa says to tell Billy hi.

We have selected our excursions and I will be up at 3AM on May 10 to make sure we get the ones we want. I check on the repo everyday and still no luck. I did try to book it the first day it was available, but couldn't get it then either.
Enjoy everyday with Billy because they grow up too quickly. It seems like yesterday ours were his age. He is a great kid and fun to be around. A reflection of his two dads.

Scott
This is good to hear.
We are going on our first Disney Cruise next month. And I was worried about how we would be treated as a gay couple, and not having kids.

Anybody booked, or thinking about booking, the Sept. 27th, 2008 Double Dip cruise?? My partner, Jason, and I just finished the EastBound TransAtlantic on the Magic and we booked the Double Dip while we were onboard. I know of at least one other queer couple on the ship and a few great queer-friendly straight families, too!
