News from WebmasterAlex - Boards will down starting Friday 12/22 at 5:00 PM

Very important information from WebmasterAlex:

Over the holiday weekend we will be upgrading the boards to the latest version of the VBulletin software. This upgrade will involve major downtime for the boards. I will be bringing them down around 5pm on Friday and it will take 24 to 48 hours to upgrade them.
The new VBulletin has a host of exciting new features, this should really make the boards a better place for all of us.

As someone who has done more than my share of system upgrades, this is the ideal time of year to do things like this. Historically, server loads on Christmas/New Year's are significantly lower than other times of the year.

Now, as a user, I can agree that it will be difficult to be away from the DIS for that long, but please don't take it out on the webmasters.

Theirs is a thankless job. I know, I've had that job many times in my 26 years of IT! Nobody ever says, "Thanks for doing a great job keeping the - fill in blank here - system up and running 99% of the time." It's always, "Hey, why did you take it down NOW?"

I'm sure Doc has a system roll-back plan in effect, so if something goes horribly wrong, he/she will just put it back the way it is now, and try again another time.

Relax, print out anything that you would need/want to recreate in the event of a major disaster (which you should do anyway), and be thankful that YOU don't have to work this weekend!

And send major pixie dust to the system team, because I can tell you, upgrades NEVER go as planned, regardless of how many hours you spend thinking of every possible contingency. As we say, "There's always one more bug."

Oh dear I hope we do not get a vbPlaza.. lol It's just my opinion, but I think it makes the profiles messy, and something that I can not see the Dis Boards having.. But anywho I am happy for the upgrade and can not see what it has in store for us.
