We are planning our first trip to DL - yippee! I'm the type of person who likes to be "in the know" about everything... so I was wondering if all you DL experts could let me in on some of the little secrets and hidden surprises that we might otherwise overlook. I don't want to miss any small detail because I don't know if we'll ever be able to make it back there again. Thanks in advance for helping to make our trip special! :)

Here is one I just found out about in December. Go to the Bazaar in Adventure land (shop). In the back there is a magic lamp. If you insert $.50 the genie will grant you a wish. It works, my wish was granted in December.

This is high end secret info :)

1. When you are on the Haunted Mansion you will hit the Birthday Party scene when all the ghosts are dancing around. On the table, are 3 plates shaped like a hidden Mickey, look fast.

2. If staying at a DLR hotel, you can request special things from Guest Services, like ressies at certain restraurants and events.

3. Next to the fire station at DL's entry point/ Town Square is the real "Walt Disney's Apartment" with the light on, it has been on 24/7.

4. At Tom Sawyers Island, the guns at the fort really fire (make sounds) a little girl lost part of her finger jumping down from the gun because her finger was stuck, and last but not least there is no food on the Island.

5. Someone was recently killed because a piece of metal broke off the Columbia ship while pulling away from the dock.

6. A CM was decapitated in the building which houses Innoventions.

7. A child had his brain crushed on Roger Rabbits Cartoon Spin, its still closed.

8. There is a vent that blows the smell of baked goods onto Main Street.

9. There is a private restraurant above New Orleans Square, meant to prop Walt friends, but it has become a club, Club 33, for the connected ones to dine and booze above the average Disneyland cits.

10. The statue of Walt and Mickey at the centerpiece of DL would be something that Walt would tear down, because he felt that the fantasy world should be separate from the mortal man that envisioned it.

I could go on, but I am not sure what you already know.

Redhit - some of those are really gory
I remember the one about the cast member - that's when it was America Sings (1975), and she stood up and got caught between the moving walls.

Walt's apartment is above the firehouse - the lamp would be turned off when someone would be staying there, but I understand no one has stayed there for awhile.

As you walk through the castle, look down for a brass spike head in the ground - before Toontown, that was the exact center of Disneyland.

In Fantasyland - go into the Villain shop and turn the key of the cage that holds the witch.

Above Snow White's Adventures, you can see the wicked queen open the curtains and peer down. Also, just before you get on the ride, there is a brass apple - touch it & see what happens.

All the "green water" - Rivers of America, castle moat, Jungle cruise river... are connected.

New Orleans Square - at different times during the day they throw mardi gras beads to the guests - sometimes from the balcony, and sometimes the band members do it. If it's someone's b-day, they'll sing a jazz version of Happy Birthday. You can go to City Hall and get a birthday sticker to wear, and that person will get special attention all day long.

Bill Hill & the Hillbillies - is a funny show to watch - try & sit in one of the booths next to the stage.

The gallery above Pirates was built to be Walt & Roy's apartment, but they never used it.

Club 33 - the entrance is a door with a sign next to it that says 33.

The one to the right, while facing the stage was Walts.

11. Tarzans Treehouse used to be Swiss Family Robinsons Tree house.

12. The chocolate chip cookies on Main Street can be bought at most grocery stores, they are Nestle Toll House.

The Tiki Room was the first use of audio-animatronics in Disneyland.

Lincoln from Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln was first seen at the '64 World's Fair, then moved to Disneyland as the first human audioanimatronic. That later led to the animatronics seen in attractions like Pirates.

When you're walking down the queue on Indy, push the pole in the spike room.

Also in Indy's queue, when you enter the show room (with the slides), above you is a sign from the Eeyore parking lot (hard to see without both knowing where to look and a flashlight). That's because where you're standing was once the Eeyore parking lot.

On Tarzan's Treehouse, there are three things (that I know of) that remain from Swiss Family -- the first is the "watch thy head" label on a low beam. Second is the "Swissapolka" music playing in the Professor's work area at the bottom. Third is the little elephant also in that area.

The Haunted Mansion stood up but empty for several years before it finally opened to the public.

When riding Splash Mountain, while you're going around outside, listen for a snoring sound coming from Brer Bear's hole. That sound used to be the snoring of a bear for simple atmosphere when Critter Country was known as Bear Country.

I believe this is where this one is -- in one of the two theaters of Country Bears, the littlest bear (who holds a teddy bear) wears a cub scout uniform. That was donated by a cub scout who thought the bear should have the right uniform.

People once used to be able to fish in the Rivers of America from Tom Sawyer's Island.

The mill on TSI is a real working mill, and at one time they used to have it open so you could watch grain being crushed.

The Columbia is a scale duplicate of the first American ship to sail around the world. There's a museum inside the ship where you can see how the captain and crew lived.

On Thunder Mountain, the little village at the queue and end, and the rainbow caverns inside, are both remnants from an earlier train ride that used to be in the same place.

On Casey Jr. train, the open cars are actually refurbished seats from the carousel.

As you're coming around Matterhorn Way (?? -- the path to Fantasyland around the castle by way of the Matterhorn and Alice) -- look for the footprint of the Yeti. Lined up pretty much between that and Ariel's grotto is a vine-covered green concrete block. This is where the Montsano (sp?) House of the Future used to stand and is all that remains in the park of that futuristic structure. Which, by the way, had to be dismantled by hand because the wrecking ball just bounced off of it -- the house was made of plastic.

I'll stop there to leave tips for others to give ;)

I just remembered another one. Inside the Indiana Jones que there is writing on the walls. It appears to be an ancient language. When the ride first opened the CM would give you a decoder so that while you are standing in line you could translate the ancient writing. Try

Mara Font - Indiana Jones (http://www.spacey.net/tshaw/Images/Disneyland/maradecoder.gif)

Have fun :D

Oh my goodness, Tink 33! Decoding the ancient writing would be awesome to my teenagers! I tried the link, but it said that the web page was not found. Is there another way to get the decoder code?

Thanks, Rajah and Redhit96, for more great insights! And, thanks for the link! You guys are the best! I can't wait for April!!!

MaryJo, you are AWESOME! I was able to get to the "Official Mara Font Page" with your link! Thanks so much! :) As I was printing the code, my daughter walked into the room and asked what it was. When I told her that we could use it to find out what was printed on the walls in the line for the Indiana Jones ride, she said, "That's really cool!"

Many thanks also to Tink33 for telling us about the decoder! :)

One of the things I liked best was the canal ride by Casey's railroad. We did that one night and along the canal there are miniature castles and villiages from several Disney stories. They were really beautiful at night all lit up and lots of detail. I was disappointed when I realized that WDW didn't have anything like this.

<font color=navy>What else can we think up. :)

A couple of weeks ago, I was at DL on Main Street when they brought the American Flag down. They do this with honors, and it touched me to see so many Americans stand there with their hands over their hearts, singing our national anthem. If you have the time, and remember. I recommend watching it. I did take pictures, just have to find someplace to upload them so I can share.

Have you ever watched Tink fly down from the Matterhorn past the castle? Have you ever wondered where she landed? Well, ride Casey Jr. Circus Train and you'll see where she lands! They still catch her the old fashioned way - there's a big mattress against the back wall that softens the blow when she lands.

There is a gesture to honor the Jewish guests.... on Main Street, next to the Watch Shop - there is a door that has a little bar about eye level next to the door. This was (is?) customary in Jewish homes, and brings good luck (supercarrie, WDWFanatic, & CalifGirl should remember seeing that :) ).

Have you ever looked down on the ground at Frontierland? You might see some hoofprints...

Disney and America - great combination. There is a western shop next to the Golden Horseshoe - there are some nice Disney patriotic shirts & stuff in there that are worth checking out.

It's a Small World has a clock that chimes every 15 minutes - it's such a cute show -- Time your visit to the attraction to coincide with the clock chiming.

Fantasia Gardens (the covered area by the Matterhorn) - the water there used to be a motorboat ride- worth a C ticket in those days, but you couldn't steer or anything - just rode around -- still, it was fun for the little ones. :)

Can anyone think of any others?

I found 2 really cool books on DL hidden secrets and facts the other day in the bookstore in DTD. They are:
Disneyland Detective by Kendra Trahan and 101 Things You Never Knew About Disneyland by Kevin Yee and Jason Schultz. The first had tons of DL facts, trivia and lots that I didn't know in regards to history, etc... of various rides, props, and it tells about each of the names on the Main Street windows. Plus, not only did it have the Indy decoder in it, it actually translated all the messages that are in the queue. Saved me a lot of work, esp since now you don't spend much time standing next to a lot of them. Also included are the Disney myths behind rides like the Haunted Mansion and BTM. I did notice a few innaccuracies, though, such as in the description of Space Mountain. It compared the DL and WDW versions and for the WDW version it says that riders sit side-by-side whereas at DL they're single file. It's actually the opposite. Both books address Disney urban legends as well.

* Try to catch a glimpse of the basketball court housed inside the top of Matterhorn Mountain. :Pinkbounc

* The smell of vanilla is pumped through ground level vents along Main Street to tempt the taste buds of guests. During the holidays, the scent is changed to peppermint. ::MickeyMo

* The asphalt in DL is a mixture of asphalt and rubber, to make it more comfortable for guests to walk on. :paw:

* The morse code message that you can hear being tapped out at the train station, is Walt's openng day speech. :listen:

Redhit96 are you okay? LOL Thanks for the morbid Disney history my 10 year old daughter will love that. (don't ask she likes morbid stuff)

My advise is to learn the fast pass system and learn it well it will save you a lot of precious time :flower:

Every ride has a hidden Mickey and if you goggle hidden Mickey's at Disneyland you can get a list and look for them. They are very hard to find unless you have the list because they are Hidden!!!!

Have a great Trip!

7. A child had his brain crushed on Roger Rabbits Cartoon Spin, its still closed.

Was this recent??? I don't remember hearing anything about this in the news. I remember when the one guest was killed by something coming off the Columbia and someone was injured on Big Thunder Mountain RR, they were all over the news.

I also have one of the original Indiana Jones decoder cards from when the ride first opened (with the AT&T logo on them and a different layout than the current cards). I think these ones are pretty rare, since I hardly ever see them anywhere. Though when I do see one on eBay, it doesn't go for much. Not that I plan to sell mine :teeth:

Also, I have a little fact to add for those who don't already know about it: When riding the Haunted Mansion, look closely at the chair with the "demon" face on it. The face is actually an abstract of Donald Duck's face. It's hard to see at first, but when you catch it, it's impossible to see it as anything else!

Oh my goodness! In preparing for another trip to Disneyland, I was very surprised and absolutely amazed to find this thread on Page 1!!!! :rotfl: I started this thread over five years ago while planning our "once in a lifetime" family trip to DL! Needless to say, we had a fantastic time thanks to all of you on the DIS Boards! We especially enjoyed decoding the hieroglyphics in Indy!

Six months after that wonderful trip, my DNiece and her family moved to Southern California, just twenty minutes from DL! They had just given birth to triplet sons and now also have a daughter, so I've made many trips to California each year to help out. Most of those times, I'd been VERY fortunate to be able to make it to Disneyland! I will soon be making my fifteenth trip (as an adult because I don't remember my first visit at all) to DL!!!! Woohoo! My DH and I are heading out for the triplet's fifth birthday party and will be staying at the Disneyland Hotel. (We've stayed at all three DL hotels!)

Now for some sad news... my DNiece and her family are moving to the Midwest next month. So, my frequent DL visits are soon going to be over. I will truly miss Southern California and all the fun things there are to do in the area. But, I have LOTS of very happy memories from the last five years. I will truly cherish every moment of this next DL trip. My only regret as a true Disney fanatic is that I was never lucky enough to get a peek into Club 33.

So thanks, DIS Boards, for keeping this thread alive for over five years and for ALWAYS being so helpful! You're the BEST! :thumbsup2

Go to the Main Street train station and ask the conductor at the station if you can ride the tender of the C.K. Holiday or the E.P. Ripley. If you are granted a ride you will essentially be riding in the locomotive with the engineer and fireman. Alternatively, ask the conductor at the Main Street Station if you can ride in the Lille Belle. This is a private VIP car which was constructed from one of the original cars built for the Disneyland rail road. There is a cloak hanging in the car which they will tell you was left there by Mrs. Disney. If you are real nice the conductor will grant you a ride in this car.

You can also supposedly get a photocopy of an original Mara translator card for free from the shop across the way...just ask at the checkout. I've never had to ask, because I carry the last one I got in my wallet. The ride kept breaking down when it was new, so the cards were a great way to pass the time. Does anyone know why they changed to track of Indy? The last time I went as a kid, it was still entering the temple of Mara, but when I went back a couple of years ago as an adult, they had changed it to a more staid ride.

If I get you right you actually switch entrances to the "temple" depending on time, day and fullness. There are actually three "entrances" one is youth, one wealth and I believe the last fame. You never know which you will enter.

Indy does not have "track" as is common with most rides, it does have a simple leader to move the car but all the motion outside forward motion is created by the car itself. It is a very unique design to the ride and was passed on to WDW for Dinosaur.

I would love to get a decoder though I don't think I have tried to do that since the ride first opened!

The RRCS accident referred to happened in September 2000. The ride has been open each time I have gone over the last 4 years. It wasn't a ride malfunction, the child tried to reach down to grab something he dropped and fell.

I see....maybe that does sound vaguely familiar. He didn't pass away, right? But suffered terrible brain damage?

How horribly sad!! I can't imagine going to DL and having something awful happen to your child while there. :sad1:

I believe the cast member loaded the vehicle with the parent on the inside and the 4-year old on the outside. Also I don't think the ride vehicle had doors at the time and therefore the boy fell out.

Children are supposed to be placed on the inside. And now the vehicles have doors.

If you go to http://www.snopes.com you can read real stories/urban legends about Disney and Disneyland.

Some of the things stated above in bold are not entirely accurate.

This lists the actual deaths that have occured at Disneyand - http://www.snopes.com/disney/parks/deaths.asp

And this talks about the castmember killed on America Sings (innoventions building.) She was not decapitated. http://www.snopes.com/disney/parks/amersing.asp

As you walk through the castle, look down for a brass spike head in the ground - before Toontown, that was the exact center of Disneyland.

For the geocachers out there, this is one of three virtual cache's at DLR

Wait, the CM in America Sings was not decapitated. She was killed by the moving stage walls though. The Columbia ship death occured in 1998 so it was not recent.

If you really want some great insight into Walt and his motivations for building Disneyland go check out the Steamers Foundation in Griffith Park, third Sunday of every month. They have Walt's Carolwood Railroad which he had in his back yard when he was alive and his collection of miniature trains as well as his personal barn and all the goodies inside. Check it out, it is a great piece of Walt and LA history.
