I noticed that Southwest doesn't go any further out than six months so I can't use them to comparison shop.......yet, on the other hand, I have always heard that the sooner you buy your air tickets the better price you can get. I have been spoiled paying only $92.50 per RT ticket through SWA. Now the prices look to be between $200-$275/ticket on other airlines. With six of us that is quite an expense. My question is when is the best time to get lowest airfares? And when should I reserve a rental car. This is one of the first times we have planned in advance. Usually we just go when everything is on sale. Thanks for the advice!!!:)

I found the bset rates anywhere from 4-1 month before the trip. It's tough, though, because you want to pick dates, but want low airfare. Sometimes the airlines will give you a voucher if a fare goes down, though.

90% of the lowest fares are found in the 4 months preceeding your travel date.

We booked our flights for late June in August, and got a good price. We aren't very flexible, so we always book out as far as we can. If you are more flexible with your dates and times you fly, then you can wait, and just keep checking online for all the fares.
