Eyelets for scrapbooks?

I have noticed how eyelets are becoming popular for scrapbooking. Would someone like to tell me how you use them and decorate with them. I haven't been able to find any articles regarding this subject. Thanks for all the help.

It took me a bit to get started but now I am just pounding away. I believe they are specially coated with something.
