Okay.
So I'm on my schools volleyball team.
being a player who doesn't play often, I've sat on the bench for a long time. Now, it doesn't matter how hard I try I end up sitting next to this little girl named Brooke.
Now, I'm against cheering. I just can't stand it, I hate it when people yell in my ears. I hate it, i hate it. And Brooke, no she doesn't just you know cheer. She screams. She cheers loud enough for the entire building to hear. And my school is pretty big. She's loud enough to cheer for the entire team itself.
Now her dad, is one of the coaches. And he says:
"All the points we get aren't from the players on the court, but the players on the bench."
I highly disagree. I do not think me cheering will make a difference in how my team plays. I actually find, cheering quite distracting. It pysches you out, it distracts you, etc. And, in volleyball, it's a mean sport. You only really cheer when the other team messes up. And my team insists on cheering when you're about to serve. Nothing can mess up a serve more than someone cheering for you.
Honestly, when someone cheers 'Nice try' to me when I screw up, it makes me madder. Because when I mess up, I get mad at myself. When they tell me that I tried for it, I know that in their heads they're saying 'She's awful. Why aren't I playing?'

I agree.
I think negative yelling can have an effect on how you play, but saying you can do better next time makes no difference.

I agree with you! i played vball 5-9th grade + club ball but i'mm done with it now, but yes yelling and cheering at your own players who are serving is absolutly distracting! unless the player is good at blocking it out, you cheer when u get a point and ace a kill etc. not so it distracts your players! I have never been at a game though where teams have gotten points taken off for being to loud on the bench---wow. :sad2:

I find cheering makes me want to do better, and it makes me want to prove that I can do anything. I guess it's different for every person.. it distracts some people and it helps otherss :upsidedow

One thing that is annoying.
Is actually, the other team have an ace. and They do this little hand clap on the ground go 'ACE!' and throw their hands up. It's annoying.
Also, doing any cheer or action everytime you get a point (in volleyball)

ok hil, take this from a fellow volleyball player and take no offense please.

volleyball is ALL ABOUT cheering and being loud and having fun. i have always been taught to be loud and cheer and encourage the other girls, even when they screw up. just bcuz you miss a serve, doesnt mean the other girls are thinking 'OMG! she sucks!'. if they say 'Nice try! Get it next time!', it means they are helping you and trying to encourage you and help you get better.

and with the 'ACE Cheer', it really doesnt hurt to have one. it tells the other team you have team spirit and that you are full of energy and are a good team.

so really what im trying to say is that volleyball is ALL ABOUT cheering and face it, it'll get worse in years to come! :confused3 :)

I'm not playing again after this year.
I've faced the fact that I'm not really good, and I'd rather not make a fool of myself next year.
And trust me, your team isn't the same as mine. Mine is a bunch of snotty rich kids. And a lot of them are spare grade sixes. And when you're put on before them (when you're playing a bad team) and you mess up your serve, they are thinking 'I'm sick of sitting on the bench. She's not that good. I want on.'
I absolutely cannot stand ace cheers. They are annoying, and a lot of the time, it messes up the other team. and it's not fun to play a team that's not trying because there's no rallying. No competition.

And plus.
I'm anti-spirit. It's not in my nature and I don't play many sports, so I don't see the point in being loud.

I can so relate to you.. Being loud doesn't help at all, especially when ur the one playing. I was on a softball team once that had girls on it that just would not stop cheering, and if you didn't cheer with them, they would consider you to be rude. I'm not really the type to scream at the batter and sing rude songs to the other team. I used to be one of the best girls on my team when it came to catching and batting, so they always would "help me" by singing an annoying song that would always distract me..

If you want to cheer along with ur team, fine do it at a GOOD point in the game, not when people are standing next to you (as said earlier with Babyjustrun) or trying to concintrate. it really doesn't help anyone... :sad2:

cheering just plain annoys me. it distracts me. i dont know what its like in volley ball but i found it very very distracting on the netball court and i must have dead silence when i'm show-jumping or i'll turn the wrong way(it's happened)

but you could always just get used to the noise(which i have) and use it to distract the other players :stir:

Okay. I play volleyball also, and sometimes I'm loud and sometimes I'm not. I mean I have lots of spirit, but I show more of it when I'm on the court. But I also hate when people cheer when I serve because it distracts me then I have to block it out while I serve and its hard for me to block things out.

But when your sitting next to that girl thats loud then just askk her to quiet down a little becuase your ears hurt or something.

I don't know about playing volleyball, but I guess cheering (to me) depends on the circumstances. I mean, I played basketball (a long, long time ago), and I would have found it extremely distracting to have people cheering. But for the band, it makes you feel better; that people are responding to what you're doing. So I don't know, it just depends.

And the "Good try" thing? That just annoys me; I hate it when people say that.

I think it's distracting too. When I used to play softball, I hated people cheering. I'd get so nervous that I'd sometimes strike out or hit really badly (like directly to first base). I did better when no one was really paying attention..
