We are looking at getting a compact digital camera....and of course there are lots to pick from. Don't know where to start.....we have a canon rebel already. But we want something that we can put in a pocket and go. I am looking for reviews or suggestions. THANK YOU very much for any help.

I narrowed my choices to these 3 Canon PwerShot models.
S3 IS : 6 MP : 12x optital zoom ; 4 AA bateries : 2" screen (flip)
A710 IS : 7.1 MP : 6x optital zoom ; 2 AA bateries : 2.5" screen
A630 : 8 MP : 4x optital zoom ; 4 AA bateries : 2.5" screen (flip)
I let my wife choose what she liked best. She went with the S3, althoght it's not exactly pocket-sized.

Thanks Laura and Garris... :)
There are just so many to pick from. And sometimes even if they get good reviews they aren't that great. Any more opinions? Thanks :)

It depends on how compact you want to go. If you want to go really small, the Canon SD series are pretty good. My wife and sister-in-law have the SD600 and are happy with it. The picture quality can't compete with a DSLR like your Rebel but is quite good for its class. The movie mode has pretty good quality, too.

I have the Canon SD800. I have had two SD series camera prior to the 800. The 800 is awesome since it has optical stabilization built in, 28mm lens and 7 meg pics. My last WDW trip in OCt we took the Rebel Xti and the SD800. We took a bunch of pics with both cameras. The SD800 takes amazing pictures, including night shots. I took pics from my seat at a recent Aerosmith concert and had some experienced photo friends believing i had taken them with the Rebel. I can post some or email if you want an idea.
My best shot I took with the SD 800 (in terms of memories, not setting) is my daughters first ride on Aladin's carpet ride. She sat up front with my wife, so I held the camera out to the side even with them and snapped the shot (no way I am doing that with the Rebel). One shot she looked to the camera and it looks AWESOME.
As you can tell, I am a SD series fan. I like having both cameras being Canons since the menu system is similar.

Size wise we would like something that would fit in a loose pocket or my purse. Something with 6 mp at least. I like the idea of a movie mode, DH would love that......Thank you everyone for your help. :)

I just bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 . I'm very pleased with it took it for a test run during a PArade the other day and was really please. I had the Sony N1 and it was great for still shots but any movement and you would get Blurs.
It's very small ,takes the cheap (cost wise ) SD cards and easy to navigate through the menus

The Cannon Powershot SD800 tops all the review lists I've read
I have a Panasonic Lumix FX-8 from last year that I love.

Thanks for the information--I was looking for the same thing! I currently have a Canon Rebel SLR (35mm) and am bordering between a DSLR and a P&S (Canon A630 was at the top of my list), normally the DSLR would win but there are times I hate lugging my SLR around, I bang it on my kids heads when we are out and about LOL!! I want something smaller. I am worried about blur and catching the shot, I have "active" subjects! LOL
Anyway, thanks for the information!
I just got a Pentax Optio W20 because I work in construction management and don't like to take my dslr on to dusty construction sites. It is 7mp, dustproof and waterproof- you can take it 6' under water for 30 minutes. I think it was around $225 at B&H. And I can't wait until next summer so I can try some underwater shots of the kids in the pool! Here are a few samples from work...

I decided to get the Canon SD700. It's about the same thing and about the same size as the SD800, with image stabilization. It has a little more zoom (140mm or 4x relative to its widest angle compared with 105mm for the SD800) but not as wide of a maximum angle (38mm which is quite standard for a point-and-shoot instead of 28mm).

(mm focal length in 35mm film camera equivalents, not relative to the focal length stamped on the camera itself.)

I ended up with the Canon Rebel XTi DSLR and I am in love!!! So much for a P&S!

I have a Canon SD700 and I love it. When I bought it (about 3 months ago now) it had excellent reviews online, and it's definitely lived up to the hype. And size-wise it is awesome for Disney trips - it fits perfectly in a Passporter pouch with room left for money, tix, etc. :thumbsup2

I am hearing good things about the Canon SD700/SD800. I think we will go try them out and see if they work for us. :)
