View Full Version : Kim's quest for the 1/2 marathon

I decided that this was the best place for me to keep track of my ups and downs. Since I have about 21 weeks to get ready for the 15K and just over a year for the 1/2 I think it will be interesting to be able to look back all my training.
Have done some training already, only walking and stationary bike with a bit of weight training. I have picked this Sunday to kick it into high gear as it will be 21 weeks this Sunday will be the Minnie.
I also have to lose about 30 - 40 pds before I seriously train for the 1/2 and have given myself until May to lose that weight. The exercise for me isn't the problem I am really enjoying it. The eatting is the tough part, mostly with this time of the year. Also trying to learn to eat well for my training but eat less cause I need to lose weight. I know exercise alone won't do it if I still eat too many calories per day. After a 10K walk or 15K on my bike I am starving. Not sure if that means I am not eatting enough before I exercise but I have read that it is better to work out on a empty stomach as it burns your fat stores? This may be old info but it is what I am doing.
I haven't set any time goals for the 15K or 1/2. As I haven't walked any of these distances I have no idea, I did a 10K walk in 1 hour 33 mins. That was also during a snow storm and extra winter clothing so I was really happy with that. Maybe a gold will be do the 15K in that same time???? Sound realisitc?
Main goal is not to get swept!!!!
I hope checking in here on a daily basis will keep me motivated.
First goal nutrition wise is to cut out pepsi. My name is Kim and I am a popoholic!!!!

Hi Kim (from another Kim!)!!
Welcome to the WISH journals. I am also considering the 1/2 marathon for 2008. Well, not considering....more really really wanting to do it!
Keep us posted on your progress. We're all here for the same reason. To be healthier people. I've made some great friends through this board!
Cutting out the soda is a GREAT start!

Hi Kim
Thank you for the encouraging words. I have thought about the 1/2 for the last 2 years and just decided to do it. I am going to do the Minnie in May as well, I love Disney so to reward my weightloss with a run there is the best.
Hope to see you there in 08!!!!

Thank you Julie for the encouragement. It will be hard for me to give up pepsi, it is my only addiction but it is truly an addiction. I will be cutting back to slowly be able to give it up completely.
Exercise went great yesterday, I also had a great NSV, I went to grab a bag of chips which I did and normally would eat about 1/4 of the bag, had 4 chips and put them away......yaaaaa me.
Watched the documentary Super Size me last night.....OMG, I love McDonalds but I may never eat at a fast food restaurant again.....if that isn't motivation I don't know what is.
I hope to check in my progress daily.
To anyone reading my journal, have a great day.

Hey Kim,
Keep up the great work! Our starting points are just about the same. I would love to do the Minnie but I am afraid to make the commitment then fall short of training goals. Also I do not fly well and the timing for our family to go with me is not good because of high school sports schedules. I am always envious of people who do the races at WDW it must be so cool to round a corner and have all that in front of you- I think I would cry!!

Hey Kim,
A belated welcome to the WISH journal board!
How is the soda challenge going? I totally know the feeling, I used to drink so much soda every day, I am talking 4-5 cans a day, it was ridiculous. Well, first of all, I just stopped buying it at the supermarket, which limited the amount I drink at home. At work, I started out by limiting myself to one a day, and now I hardly ever even buy one at work. It was very hard in the beginning but after about 6 months, I hardly ever drink soday anymore. So, keep it up, it is very hard but you can do it!!!
Good Luck with your training!

hockeygirl and momof2minnies, thank you for the kind words, I have only had 2 sips of pepsi since Jan2nd. Really don't even crave it any more.
I am so pumped to do the big marathon in January, I have totally told myself if I want to do this I must eat clean and excercise and so far I am doing great.
How are you all doing??

Good morning Kim,
We are at the exact same weight but I have not measured myself. I am a little frustrated because I hit a plateau. I work out like crazy and my husband who doesn't even go for a walk is only 3 lbs. behind- he may have even passed me by now but is afraid to tell me. You sound like you are doing great. I'm glad you don't miss the pepsi I know that must be tough one. I can't give up my morning coffee.Keep me posted.

Hi Kim,
Sounds like everything is going well for you! Way to go on the soda challenge, I wish I could have given it up that quick! It took me almost 6 months to do what you did in a few weeks...Good for you! Keep up the good work!

Hi Linda, DH and I weight the same and I hate that. He is only about 4 inches taller then me but he is has alot of muscle....me no so much:rotfl2: . Keep up the good work, one thing I was told is that as I gain muscle I need more calories to sustain that so you need to eat a bit more so your body doesn't go into starvation. Makes sense I guess, I don't know how much fact there is behind that statement but thought I would pass it along.
Kim, thank you for the encouraging words again, you are awesome. Training is going good. I am working on distance right now, and some strength training. How are you doing????
Laurie, I was so surprised also I gave it up so quick I have tried many times before and didn't last the day. I think I just must have been ready cause it really wasn't that hard and I am so pleased about that, if I didn't get rid of the pop I would be consuming alot more calories per day and would be further behind in my progress. Since we both have hockey in our user names what is your connection to hockey? I love it, my fav sport, DH and I use to play and my DS played for a few years. DD played boys rep for many years then changed to girls rep but has recently gave it up for a social life, she use to be at the rink 4 to 6 nights per week and had no time for friends.
Thank you all again for the encouragement.

Hey Kim,
I love hockey, actually my favorite sport. I started playing about 6 years ago, because my ex-boyfriend played and I used to go see him all the time, so finally I borrowed equipment and started playing myself. I started out playing as a center/wing, but my team needed a goalie so I started playing goalie and here I am 6 years later still playing. I love it, right now I play on 3 teams, a women's team that travels around NY, NJ, CT, and PA playing other women's teams, and then I play on two different men's league teams at a local rink. I figure I better play as much as I can now because once I have kids I probably won't have the time to play as much. And my DBF also plays so that makes it easier for me to get out 3 nights a week to play, since he doesn't mind!

Laurie, that is great, definatley get it all in now, that is when I quit but DH conintued until about 3 years ago, but I was OK with it I was done had played my entire life. But still my favorite sport to watch.
Thank you for the info on the blisters, I am so worried this is going to stop me from getting in all the training I am going to have to do. I have given up the far fetched notion that I would do a Goofy, but haven't decided between the 1/2 and the full. Really want that Mickey Medal..;) but also want to have fun that weekend and not be freaked out if I can do it. I think I have some time to decide.

Hey Kim-I hope the training is going well....I saw your questions on the weekly thread about training programs and nutrition. Those people are great, there were so many good responses....now I am thinking about nutrition and what I need to do to eat better.
I hope the blisters are doing better!!! Take care of them now, don't worry too much about the training yet, just get your base training in and work your way up to the longer distances. It is great that you are looking for a training plan to follow. I am using Hal Higdon's novice half marathon program. I will officially start it on Feb. 5 to get ready for my half marathon in April.
Keep up the good work--and I see you lost 2 lbs this week!! Good for you!

Well I am back and gainned 7 pds!!!! This isn't good in a month and a 1/2 I gained 7 pds. I know why though so no blaming anyone but myself.
I am back with some new determination and I know what worked for me earlier in the year so I will just rededicate to myself and Get rrrrr done.
I am now in training for a 1/2 marathon on Sept 30th with another 1/2 on Jan 12....the big one .... Disneys 1/2 marathon.
I will do a weight and measure tomorrow morning and get back at er.

I am getting back at it again.....life just gets in my way sometimes....lol
I have one planned cheat day....Aug 18th is my family reunion, first one ever and there will be about 70 people there so I do plan on having a good time but I am back at it today. I will post measurements and weight tomorrow since I haven't done that in a long time but I think I am back to abou 170 and I am back drinking pop.
Starting this Sunday the pop will go again, I am gradually getting off it this week.
This Sunday it will be 6 weeks till my first ever 1/2 marathon so I hope to be down to about 165....about 15 pds...I know that sounds like alot but if I lose the pop and start eatting better I believe I can do it. Plus I don't want to carry around too much extra weight. 21K or 13.1 M is along way to be lugging my fat behind around.
Daily check ins to come...this is a promise to myself.
I have done great today, I also plan on getting in some walking tonight, nothing heavy about 4K. Also, I am borrowing a idea from a fellow WISH teammate and will do crunches and push ups each night.

Hey, Kim! I am sorry I haven 't been around. How you doin' girl? :) Thinking of you and hoping all is well. Good luck on your weight loss goal, but as I was just telling another WISH friend, I read a fellow WISHer's observation that we can control the amount and quality of what we put in our mouths and the amount and quality of exercise, but we have no control over whether our bodies drop the pounds. Yep, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Sounds like you are doing well to control what you can and hopefully, you'll see the results you want! Can't wait to see you at ToT!!

Finished a 1/2 marathon yesterday and I felt like crap after I was done. Lack of training and carrying around too much weight!!!!!! I have signed up for a full marathon in January and at this rate I don't have a hope in heck of finishing so I have 3.5 months to either make the change or give up the dream of a full marathon at disney.
My weight this morning was 187 however, I did not take measurements I will do that tonight.

Hi Kim! I was just reading your journal, and I had to post. Please don't give up on your dream of doing the marathon in Jan. You can do it!! First, set your goal to just finish and cross that finish line on marathon sunday.
I am not sure if you have a specific program you are following to prepare for the marathon, but if you don't, find one now....if you just finished a half a couple of weeks ago, your definetely can do a full in Jan. Keep at it and please don't loose hope!!!
I will be checking in on you to see how you are doing!!!!
