This is based on an experience I had today.
You're buying something.
You're given back too much change.
Do you bring the mistake to the attention of the clerk, or just go about your business?

I have to give it back!
I don't want someone to get in trouble if I can help it.

Once my dad and I were at the movies. Usually with us, we hardley ever go to the movies...and when we do we usually sneak in pop/candy, and buy a small popcorn. Well this time we figured, what the heck? We bought a small popcorn, and two medium drinks. When the guy rang it up, it came out to be like eight dollars or something like that.
My dad hand's him a ten. The guy at the cash register gives us our stuff, and hands us our change. As my dad is walking away, he notices that the guy gave us back our ten, and added in 50 cents to boot. Yes, we actually made money by buying consessions at the movie. Normally he would have talked to the person, but heck, stuff at the movies is so expensive nowdays that we figured we'd keep it.

I always count my change to make sure that they give me the correct amount. They have never given me too much change before. I suppose that I would probably give it back. I assume that registers have to keep a penny by penny tally of all of the money in the box.

It depends on how much it is. If it's like 30 cents, I wouldn't bother, but if it was 10 dollars or something I would.
After having been a cashier I'm more in tune to it now. You have to pay attention, especially if they're new bills. One time I was given $100 in 20's and they were new and 2 got stuck together and the lady walked off, luckily she noticed and was nice enough to bring it back to me.

So Sparx you didnt share...what happened and did u give back the money or keep it?
Well, I probably wouldn't notice that I'd been given the wrong amount of change. If I did notice... I might try to give back the extra, but, frankly, I might be too shy to.

How helpful, friendly, courteous, and cheerful* have the store personnel been to you in the past?
>>> stuff
Bad idea. Put the money back in your wallet. Otherwise next time you pull out your wallet, some of the crumpled bills may come out and fall on the floor, possibly unbeknownst to you.

Crinkle each "one" to be sure it is not two.

Clerk gives back too much change
(ye thinks to yeself) "Yes we actually made money on this, heck stuff at the movies is so expensive.."
(you didn't hear this) "The register is short so I'm going to take it out of your pay"
(you do hear this) "Fire! Fire!"
Everyone gets up in the dark and runs for the exits trampling everyone else.
(on the 11 o'clock news) "arson by a disgruntled employee"
(rewind; me, instead, at counter holding up the excessive change) "Uh, how much did the popcorn cost? (Ph.D. in math or my answer to your PM needed to understand this last sentence.)

This has only happened to me once.
I went ice skating and it cost nine
dollars for skates and to skat. I paid
with a twenty and somehow got
eighteen dollars back. I probably
would have said something but I
didn't even realize it until I got
home.
One time I was at the mall with
my friend and she bought something
for like two dollars with a five dollar
bill and they gave her ten dollars
back. She kept it and we called it
her karma (spelling?) money. She
ended up having really bad like
for the rest of the day.

I work at the register at a Marshalls. If i was to ever give someone to much change back I would appreciate it if they brought it to my attention and didnt just walk away with it.

i dont really count how much they give back to me, i just put it back in my purse. but if on a rare occasion, id count how much they gave me and they gave me too much, i would most likely give it back. but it depends on how much of a difference it was. if it was less than 2 dollars, no if it was more, yes.

The only few times I've noticed I've given it back.
But, I only really check how much money I got back if I need the money or it's not my money to begin with.

Funny thing happened to me with this situation.
I was at Target lately, and I bought something that came to a total of $21.37. I was at one of those self check-outs, and when i was done with my transaction, I put the money in. It started to say that i needed to put more in, so I did (just to let ya know, I'm not the brightest lightbulb in the closet). So i kept putting money in until finnaly it stopped. I put a grand total of $68.25 in, so I tried to call a manager over. Suddenly, the thing starts to pour out change and give dollar bills out. I flipped out, and fell over. Finnally, some employees came over to shut it off..
So, when I got my money back, I ran as far away from the matchines as fast I could and waited in Starbucks for my mom to come out. When I got there, I wanted a moca-frappachino, so I took the money out, and I found a fifty! I couldn't return it, because I was so scared to go back in there, so I donanted it to the Pecto next door.
I'll never use another Self checkout again..

Kind of a related story..
I woke up late Wednesday, and there was nothing I wanted to eat at home, so I decided I would drive to Dunkin Donuts and get a donut or a muffin or something. So I'm in a rush because I don't want to be late, and I order a hot chocolate and a donut. I got up to the window and I take out my wallet and I had a $10 bill and 3 $1 bills. I decided to break the $10 because I'd rather have the small bills than the $10. So she hands me the bag with the donut and I give her my money. I put the bag down in the passenger seat, and grab my hot chocolate. It was really really cold, and it must have frozen my brain, because I put the drink in my cup holder, and rolled up my window and drove away! I guess I thought I had already got my change back or something.. So I was still in a rush, and I spilled my hot chocolate all over my coat on the way to school, and I didn't realize I forgot my money til my second class of the day. Plus I had dance practice after school, and I didn't get home til about 5, so I wasn't gonna go back to Dunkins and be like "Hey, about 10 hours ago, I forgot to get my change" so I just gave that employee a really big tip, so I hope she enjoyed it!

If it's a small amount of money I would probably keep it but if it was bigger I would tell the cashier.
