Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

Musta been something in the air today. I had the most hideous, stonker, emotionally devastating run ever. 10 miles, most of the last 5 I walked. All mental stuff...just couldn't make myself do the intervals anymore after the first hour. Finished in 2:17.

Stephanie...congrats on your PR! What a great 5K time! Love the reindeer antlers!

AmyBeth... :wizard: for your injury!

Christy...great to see you back! Is Cheryl not running with you this year?

Anne...hope you had a great trip to WDW...we're going next week to see the lights! I had some of those same arguments with my brain today.

Kevin...real men wear zebra ;)

Lily...glad everything worked out with your new car! Are you planning to get the 'tiger' shorts ;)

Jen...good luck on your presentation?

Tiff...good to see you back! Here's a little kickstart for motivation :cool1:

Monica...I'm a full minute per mile slower on the TM than outside.

Jodi...we didn't get much out of PT for DD13. They gave her some stretching exercises and said our insurance wouldn't cover the 3x weekly that the orthopedist ordered.

Steve...hope the 20m went well.

Krista... :wizard: for your ITBS.

Teri...congrats on your pace!

Dave...hope the Xmas lights went well. I try to think of bad LR as the dress rehearsal for the race. Christa can correct me, but isn't a bad dress rehearsal supposed to mean a great performance?

Cam...great pace...you'll be great in the full!

Looks like the overall consensus is to keep the list at least until after marathon weekend, then consider shuffling it around as needed for 2008. I think it looks split on changing the name, with more of a lean toward keeping things the way they are. I'd like to try to get the word 'marathon' in the title somewhere so we could be found in a search, but I don't want our threads to be unwieldy. Looks like most folks get here through word of mouth anyway.

I don't ask for help easily, but I'm hoping you guys won't mind offering some advice. This kinda means a lot to me. I've been disappointed with my pace for awhile now and I'm wondering if I've been holding back too much. With my awful run today, after the fifth mile, I decided to just play around with what was left. I usually do my R4/W1 at a slow jogging pace. I decided to open it up and run. I was able to comfortably do between 9:30 and 10 mpm...and this was AFTER 5 miles of jogging. I can't sustain it for very long, but I can do it...and at times, I saw 8:30 on the Garmin. I've been nursing an injury since last March that's finally improved...I switched to the TM for SR to decrease impact from concrete that I run on daily and I've been trying not to push the pace and save up for the end of the run. Do you guys think I've been working against myself all this time? I go straight into training for the Sarasota half right after WDW, so I'd really like to push the pace. What's the best way to approach this?

TIA!

Oh...and could I get a little football :wizard: for the Gators? I can't believe USC lost...we could be in the national championship :faint:

:sad1: :sad1: :sad1: Nothing against you, you know I love ya!! I just can't afford any pixie dust for the Gators. It's the whole rivalry thing, ya know what I mean?! :p

Just a quick stop in to say Hi to everyone. Sorry I haven't been posting much. I have been so busy. I only got in two runs this week, some speed work and then my 10 miler yesterday. I felt really good during my run and finished at 1hr 40min exactly!! Next weekend I have my 24 miler, :scared1: :scared1: , I am really nervous about it. You would think, I have already done 20 and 22. 24 shouldn't make me that nervous but it definately does.

I promise to come back and chat with everyone a bit more later. For now, I am off to get the boys breakfast and the I am off to do more shopping for Christmas.

Good Morning Team!!!

Glad there is a new thread I hope I can keep up with the one. I hope to get to know you all better so I can comment. I guess coming in this close to the race you already all know each other. party:

Can't remember if I posted yesterday but I did another 15 K on my stationary bike, beat my previous time by 4 mins 7 seconds. This is huge for me. Just a background on me, I have about 30 pds to lose before I seriously start training for next Jan. :dance3:

Chimera, sorry I can't offer any advise I am just learning everything I need to know. But from what I have read here there is so much wonderful advise, glad to hear your injury is getting better

Going for a long walk today, since I am going to attempt the Minnie in May I need to start walking the distance before I add any jogging. I will post my time later this afternoon.

Off to have breakfast. Have a great morning all.

Good Morning Everyone -

Wow, I am beginning to think NOONE had a good run yesterday.

Matt- I did my 20 miler with nothing but powerade. I also got fatigued but but part of what you are doing on these long runs us teaching your body to run on little or no fuel. I find the middle miles are harder than the last few, I thnk its because you know how far you still have to go. You had great times so concentrate on that.

Mel- I imagine that after an injury it would be hard to push yourself. There is an emotional recovery as well as the physical recovery. Perhaps you need to experiement more often rather than sticking to a rigid routine. If the intervals aren't working for you, do what does work.

My "hip" is sore today. My coach told me not to crosstain today so I get an extra rest day this week. An extra day to get me mentally ready for my final 20 mile run on Saturday. After this saturday, my taper officially begins although they tell me I won't notice for a couple weeks.

Hang in there everyone, we can do this!!

Wow I have missed so much here.

WDW is so close and I feel so unready. Due to family stuff, my Mom had knee surgery and I have been playing nursemaid, I have only been able to get in about 5/6 miles a day, no long runs.
Do you guys think this will be enough to carry me through? I am gonna try to get a long possibly 15 in this week.

That is bad news , good news my pace is better and I can sustain a whole run for almost an hour without walking.

Anyone suggest a good R/W pace for the full? Need all the help I can get.

Hey Cecilia - I had a GREAT r/w yesterday! My best time ever for 5 miles!
hoping to back it up today with a great 12 miler!. Haven't had too many great workouts lately, so this made me happy!

Hi guys! Happy Sunday!

Mel: At the time of my last post, Cheryl was questioning if she would be able to make the trip. I'm happy to report that she's back on and excited for marathon weekend.

I had a decent LR yesterday. I only went 7 miles (scheduled for 11) but maintained right at a 12:30 minute mile. It definitely gave more confidence that I'll be able to run a good portion of the 1/2.

Here's hoping for a great training week for everyone!

Mel - Good luck w/ whatever you decide. I think whatever you do has to be a personal thing. When I increase my pace significantly (i do LR's in the 11mpm range but if i want to i can keep it in the 9's for around 10 miles and in the 8's for 3miles) i get hurt. i noticed last year when i tried to push the pace, the injuries increased. I ended up deciding i want to complete and not compete (not that my pace was that competitive anyway) I think the real struggle is mental though. As endurance athletes, we are always trying to find our limits and then push them. We had that struggle w/ adventure racing this year. As a team we did really well on sprint races (8-12hrs), but then found some of our limits (for now) on the longer courses w/ really bad weather. We felt pretty discouraged about it, but also realised that we were doing it for fun and fitness. I would say, if you can still have fun and you don't notice increase in injury, go for it. Also, don't beat yourself up if you find you don't need to increase your pace. It just means you found an endurnace boundry (for now :thumbsup2 ) Oh, and, maybe you are an ADHD athlete at heart (like lynn and I ) and you need to find some other fun aerobic activities to mix it up a little. (break out that kayak!! They wild todd must be ready by now) Lynn and I (and probably cecilia) would gladly talk bikes w/ you in january!! OK, I've gotten so excited sitting here typing about endurance events, endurance boudries and bike shopping that i'm sweating (really!) and it's 19deg here this morning :confused3

Jodi...we didn't get much out of PT for DD13. They gave her some stretching exercises and said our insurance wouldn't cover the 3x weekly that the orthopedist ordered.

Yeah - My insurance will pay for a certain amount of sessions per year but it just really seems like a waste.

I'm going to therapy twice a week and spend most of the time watching her help out the other people there. I'm thinking that working with my personal trainer is probably the way to go -- but I'm trying to make the best decision for me. I've asked my husband his opinion too and he agreed that I seem a little bit more upbeat after going to my personal trainer vs. physical therapist.

Decisions......hehe anyhow I'm going to threadmill it today, doing a fast paced walk. The muscle pull from last week is still a little sore.....don't want to do more damage - - I now have a book on stretching, so I will make sure I do a lot of stretching before and after.

I was able to comforably do between 9:30 and 10 mpm...and this was AFTER 5 miles of jogging. I can't sustain it for very long, but I can do it...and at times, I saw 8:30 on the Garmin.

I'm the same way - - I can get the Garmin at times down to 7:59, but I think just do what you can and don't push it! My personal opinion of course.

Wanted to get in my times before I jump in the hot tub to sooth my achy muscles.

Only did 10 K we are in the middle of a little snowstorm. Since this is our first time I don't have any times to compare it to but here it goes.

10K 93 mins 40 secs with a split at 45 mins 25 secs. Feel good but really hungry. Will be back on later.

I thought a lot about your question during today's run, and here are my thoughts.

I actually think you are going far too fast in your jog surges, which is causing several problems.

First off, your pace in the jog parts approaches the pace that Christa (gatorphipps) runs when training. Since I am none of these, I'll point out that Christa is young, light, and really fast. 9 mpm is cranking along and I think it is too much to ask of your body.

As you increase pace you increase geometrically the pressure and stress on each footstrike. So going from 10:30 per mile to 9:30 per mile significantly increases the pounding your body takes, and the chance of injury rises as well.

By going so fast you also are likely getting yourself into oxygen debt and producing lots of lactic acid in your legs. This makes your body fatigued at the end of your jog sessions, so your body needs a longer recovery period in the walk sessions. A cycle of jog too fast and then having to walk a bit longer each time will definately slow you down.

I must admit I have been skeptical of members of our group who are averaging, say 12 mpm while training, but doing this by jogging 9 mpm for bursts and then walking at what must be a pretty easy pace to be sitting on 12 mpm. 9 mpm is FAST, the equivalent of a sub-2 half and a sub-4 full. Sustaining that pace the entire distance will place anyone very high at the Disney races, at least the fastest 15% of the field. Since running hard early is always paid back and then some in long races, in my opinion doing the jog parts so fast is self-defeating. Yes you are really moving in short bursts, but the necessary walk to recover slows you and in a half or marathon by the end you will suffer.

And deep in my soul, well not really that deep, is a competitor. When I am in the pattern of a person or group who is jogging fast and then walking to recover I point out to myself that soon enough they will drop from my sight, which always happens. They just cannot carry that fast jog.

I think to see overall pace improvement you should try to target a pace which you can sustain for longer periods of time. By slowing down just a bit in your jog sessions you should be able to stretch the time of these session, perhaps enough to surprise yourself. Just as speeding up past comfort pace requires payback later, slowing down just a bit from comfort pace should allow you to sustain the jog sessions for a much longer time. If you can do this you'll change your proportions of jog vs. walk, and I think see a nice improvement in overall pace.

At least in theory. Good luck in practice.

Craig

All right, talking about aliens.
How could I resist the 5K for Special Olympics last night?
So, after doing 20 miles yesterday morning for myself, I walked the 5K last night for Sepcial Olympics. Overall pace, 14:10. But, at 2 miles, my time was 27:35, which I think is 13:47 or something like that. :teeth:

23.1 miles yesterday.

And I am on my feet today with almost no aches or pains. Heading out for errands and xmas shopping and then work.

Glad to see everyone here and putting in the steps. :cool1: Sending pixiedust: for all those with aches, injuries & pains. :grouphug:

Good afternoon everyone!

I'm typing this from our room at the POR. Got in last evening.

We're supposed to be out resort hopping, looking at Christmas decorations. But, the DW has come down with a bug. So, she's sleeping and I'm fixing to watch football. Kind of a bummer. I hope she's feeling better tommorrow, as we have tickets for MVMCP. Now I wish I would've brought my running gear.

Mel - Sorry to hear about your run. That's what happened to me last week.

To all of you getting your training in - Congrats.

Oh yeah, Mel, as a born and raised Ohioan, I will have to go with the Buckeyes to beat the Gators if they play for the Championship. :)

Mel,

You may want to look into Heart Rate Training methods. I've been doing this for almost a month now and I like the method (probably because I get to track data and play with gadgets). It's a really good way to regulate "easy" and "hard" training runs. I'm using the book "Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot" by John Parker.

Basically, easy runs are governed by a "Recovery Ceiling" that equals 70% of your maximum heart rate. At times, this rate seems excrutiatingly slow and sometimes you have to resist getting "happy feet" and force yourself to slow down or even walk to stay below 70%.

Hard runs are governed by trying to stay above a "Threshold Floor" of 85%. The hard runs start with an easy mile or two, followed by x miles at 85% and then finishing the last mile at the easy pace.

My results are yet to be tested, by my 5 mile runs (1m easy, 3m hard, 1 m easy) are taking the same amount of time as my pre heart rate monitoring 5 mile runs where I would run full out for the whole distance.

I tried to use the heart rate method during the X-Country Marathon at Alafia River State Park November 19th, but was sabotaged by grinding knee pain just past the 18 mile mark. I ended up walking the remainder of the race and finished in 6h 13m. Not a PR.

The big advantage for me, is that going "easy" and going "hard" are determined for me objectively and not subjectively.

1st of all! Craig - I LOVE YOU! Saying I am fast! :rotfl2: And YOUNG! :lmao: And Lite! :goodvibes

Mel - I have also thought about your question and was going to say that speed training would help you get faster...but at this point, I would not start it! I also agree with everything Craig said in his post (remember that I love him!) but for real...there is great wisdom in everything he says!

WOW the LRs were amazing this weekend...I know I have missed some so sorry!
Cam! You were flying and sounds like your recovery is going nice!
Dave - Is 20 miles supposed to feel good? Sounds like you did great! Don't worry about feeling like it was a stonker...The 1st time I trained for WDW (04) my 22 miler ended in tears. I told Ron (the guy who trained me and my beloved running partner Bree who went and got preg on me and now I have to run alone...oh sorry I was OT :lmao: ) that I would not and could not do this...but I did and everything was fine!
Krista - lots of :wizard: :wizard: to you! I know you will do great on marathon day.
Matt - Glad your 16 went well!

OK! About my LR! I ran for 2:40 and not sure how far I went! I cannot pull up the google GPS map so I cannot track how far I went! :furious: Was supposed to do 15...and I know I did that, and then I added on.....DH and BIL were running 15 and I did not want to sit in the car for a long time so I know for a fact I went 3 extra miles...maybe further.....
I have to say...It poured down the rain and the wind was so bad that at times it almost pushed me off the sidewalk. When I finished, I looked like I had jumped in a pool...Oh also, my shoe was all red and I thought I had stepped in mud (we have red clay here in NC)...but NO! My toenail was rubbing against my toe and I was bleeding...my sock is still red even after bleaching it....YUCK!

Good afternoon, everyone!

:grouphug: to all of those with stonker LRs this weekend. Hang in there! You guys are still my heroes!

:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for those nursing injuries, taking PT, and just downright don't feel good.

:wizard: for Florida now that they beat my team - the Razorbacks. :teeth:

Cam - good going! Whew!

Stephanie - congrats on your 5K. Where in AR was it held? The Russellville Reindeer run was cancelled this year. Bummer.

MelR - :offtopic: Have you participated in the Hotter than H*ll bike race in Texas? DH and I are going to sign up for it. He'll do the 100, I'll do the 50. :teeth:

Kim - sounds like you are on the right track for '08. :thumbsup2 I'm fairly new to the group as well. There's new people buzzing in all the time - all are welcomed. Of course, the focus is on '07 marathon weekend now. Pretty soon, '08 will be the focus. I just hope I can make it through '07. :)

I did my 8-miler W/R yesterday - on the dreadmill. It wasn't too bad. Not sure about my exact times but I think I maintained <15 min. pace. Some people mentioned earlier that it is harder for them to run on the treadmill vs. outside. Whenever I use the treadmill at the gym, I find it much easier than outside. I'm able to run longer - instead of 2 min. at a time, I can run up to 3 min. at a time. Not sure why.

I've got a question for you all - how long should I soak in the cold water bath after a run? I tried this for the first time yesterday and I nearly froze my touchie off after sitting in the tub for about 20 min. However, I'm not sore today so maybe it worked. :thumbsup2

Susie - i have not done that race. I have only race my bike in adv races and tri's. I've done a 50 and a 100 but they were w/ the tour de cure (thankfully, it was nnot a race b/c i was slow!!) You'll have to let me know how that one is. i assume it is in the summer :sunny:

did a lr of around 9 miles on the trail today. it was freezing and covered w/ snow. the resistance from the snow caused it to be pretty slow. i felt like it was meant to be since this is stonker week!!! I was miserable but i knew i had company!! :teeth: The really weird part is that i ran that trail on tues. morning in SHORTS and today it was double tights, tank top, 2 long sleeve shirts (one from last yrs dis) and a fleece. Also, my nighmare b/4 christmas hat (to intimidate anyone else on the trail - not that there was anyone b/c the trail was actually closed and the roads to it were patchy (except one adventure racer friend on his bike and my friend w/ me (can i have an aside in an aside?)))Anyway....my sweaty hair froze under my hat. that was gross.

Matt-I think you are too hard on yourself, you did great!!! :cheer2:

Christa-eeww, that cant feel good :wizard: for the toe

Vic- I hope DW gets better :wizard:

I did my 12 miler today. Went pretty good (especially considering the lack of training lately) My legs & feet were feeling it pretty good (and still are) But I'm happy its done!!! Only 1 more really LR & then its downhill from there.

Terri- Glad you had a great run :cool1: those always feel great!

Hi Everyone,

Well, I got some training in today -- I did some walking instead of the running (trying to take a little easy). I was able to do 5 miles at a 15:00/14.38 pace, it was a lot of work but not too too bad.

Is that a good pace for walking? I wanted to try and get it down lower but it is really tough because I'm was learning how to work a different set of muscles that walkers use. Any advice from all of you walkers?

My husband bought up something worth, I think, looking into for the marathon. I still very much want to run it (if I don't feel comfortable then I will walk it). Anyhow, back to the orginal thought.....he brought up that maybe if I don't feel better by my next check up with my doctor -- maybe ask if he recommends a cortizone shot -- Do you think that is a good idea? I know they tend to be painful but is it something worth looking into?

I might try and do some more walking tomorrow night -- I enjoyed it! but I think I need to stretch out my shins and calf muscles a little more.

Wow, 22 posts on the thread for this week already and it's only Sunday afternoon! We all have nothing better to do than hang out with our WISH team, right? :thumbsup2

Stephanie--great job on the 5k! Kudos on the PR!

Dave--sorry about the stonker run. But as Christa said, is 20 miles supposed to feel good? :confused3 Try not to fall off the roof putting up Christmas lights. I told Krista that there will be no lights on the upper parts of the house this year since I'm afraid of falling off the ladder, and it's waaaay to close to January 6th to be falling off ladders.

Cam--wow, WTG on the 23.1 miles! Please tell me you've been bragging to everyone you know that you did all that in one day. :)

WARNING: I have been thinking about the other things that were normal at this point in training last year. They include: Obsessive worry over every body ache! Paranoia around even the smallest sniffle or cough, extreme swings in affect, uncontrollable appetite!! just some more thing to look forward to over the next 4 weeks.!
MelR--yeah, that list brings back memories. I do indeed remember running full speed away from anyone who so much as sniffled or sneezed for the entire month of December last year.

Amy--so sorry about your inury. Good for you trying to keep a positive attitude. We'll be praying for you for your Sports Med meeting on Monday.

Sunny--way to go on your 19! Your story makes me want to find a Starbucks on my LR route. Although I'm a little apprehensive about stnading in line to order coffee at Starbucks after 10 or 15 sweaty miles. :teeth:

Lily--nice job on the 9 miles. Good luck on your 18 today. Try not to get sick.

Mel--don't worry about the 10. You have enough experience to know that one run doesn't matter. You'll be fine in 5 weeks, but I'm sure you already know that. :) I don't have much to add about speeding up the pacing that everyone else hasn't said already, but I know that when I push my pace for several weeks consecutively, I have a tendency to get injured if I'm not careful. I've always heard to either push the distance or push the pace--not both. So maybe you want to wait till after Disney to work on speed.

Kim--good job with the 15K on the bike. I know what you mean about setting PRs on the bike. I almost get more excited with a bike PR than a running PR (almost...)

Cecillia--couldn't agree with you more about the middle miles of a LR being the hardest. Mentally, I'm ok when I get to the 75% point of a LR, but the 25-75% stretch is a tough one.

Vic--I think I speak for everyone here when I say Im jealous of you being in WDW! Hope your DW feels better and you get to go to MVMCP. How's the weather down there now?

Chester--I second your opinion on HR training. Krista got me a Forerunner 305 this summer and I have been using the HR monitor for all of my runs since then. It makes it so much easier to tell when you're pushing yourself too hard or not hard enough. A lot of times, I'll base my LR pace on my HR instead of the actual pace per mile calculation. It's amazing how much your actual pace can vary for any given HR zone, especially because of weather, how your body feels that day, etc.

Christa--sorry to hear about the wind and rain for your run. Although I guess that's a good warm-up for the possibliity that we could have bad weather at Disney. BTW, has anyone thought about that? I know we don't want to talk about it, but has anyone mentally prepared for the "worst" weather/conditions at Disney?

Susie--I'm no expert, but I've always spent 15 min or so in the ice bath and it seems to work.

Well, based on the other LRs this weekend, I guess I should have had a stonker today (maybe mine is coming next week when everyone else has an awesome run  ), but I actually had a really good 20 miler today. The legs felt great throughout the run, and I had been worried about that after the 10 yesterday. Finished in 3:18 overall, and I felt good about the pace. I still have to take the good ole ice bath. I've been trying to put it off as long as possible. :)

Hope everyone has a good week and some great runs, both physically and mentally. And by the way, is anyone else getting really excited to meet everyone at the Friday night dinner? I was telling Krista yesterday that last year we weren't nearly as excited as we are this year. It will be great to see you all!

SportsAuthority has the Asics GT2110 Cushion Running Shoe (men's, women's) for $54 - 25% off NOVFF25 - $10 Google checkout = $30.49 w/ free shipping. :cool1:

I haven't even gotten to 100 miles yet on my Kayanos, but I was wanting to try these out as well, and for that price even to use as like a backup trail pair or rainy weather pair its too good to pass up...

Wow, awesome deal, Matt! You're right, you can't go wrong for $30. That reminds me, I need to try to get over to Dick's tonight. I have a "friends and family" discount coupon (a friend of mine works there) for 25% off anything in the store, plus a 10% employee discount. I know they carry the Kayanos, and I wouldn't mind getting a back up pair for less than $100.

I'll try to catch up on everyone's post later, but wanted to give my training results for the day and get your opinions. Just got out of a 20 min. ice soak (br-r-r-r) and have to run to the mall to pick up something I ordered.

I did 11 miles w/r today (had planned on 12, but the route I took ended up being only 11). Finished in 2:31:34 (which I think is about a 13:34mpm pace)
Although I was getting tired near the end, I didn't feel totally wiped out. For that I'm happy.
What I'm not happy about is that I got a blister again! I don't know what to do.
By the end of last year's Goofy I had a blood blister the size of half dollar on my foot. So musch for blister free socks
Yesterday I did 5 miles on the track and had no blister problems. Today I was on the sidewalks and blacktop and I have a combo (clear blister in the middle with two little blood blisters on either side. I wore my thicker smart wool socks and put vaseline on the area where I seem to get the blisters to try to reduce the friction.

Does anybody have any other ideas? My shoes are the Asics Kayanos (this is the 3rd time I've worn them). I don't want to suffer through the Goofy with more blisters. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

My family graciously allowed me to spend last night away from home so I could do a mini-Goofy -- a 7-mile trail run Saturday followed by a half marathon on Sunday (the Victory Junction Half Marathon). Now I am in severe family debt and need to do laundry, etc., etc. Photos and a race report are here:

Wendys Victory Junction Run Report (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1291501)

I know I'm being a terrible team member by not commenting on everyone's posts, but between Dad being in the hospital and all the training walks and the kids... please forgive me for just trying to keep my head above water right now. I hope to be able to meet many of you in January!

Wow, it looks like everyone is training hard.

Wendy --- SO COOL!! :thumbsup2

I wish I had more time to check in. WHile I will pop in to read for inspiration, I often do not post, one due to time or two, I just can't respond to all the great things I am reading!!

Anyway, DH and I ran 8 miles yesterday. Time: 1:51. We are slow but steady. I had to subtract 6 minutes off my watch! We found a yorkie wandering the streets and found his owners searching for him! He wandered off while they were hanging lites! We'll take all the good karma we can get so it was worth it!

I am a bit sore today, but proud of myself. I was sick last week and did not run or get to the gym at all!

Are any first timers nervous about training only calling to run 10 miles on your longest run? I am. DH says trust the penguin, so far it has been good!

Have a great week all!!!

We caught the edge of a storm and it was less than 30° and due to the patches of ice, I didn’t want to risk running outside and falling so I hit the TM
1 15:00
2 15:00 gatorade
3 14:08 half breakfast bar
4 15:03 water
5 14:37 half banana
6 14:00 gatorade
7 15:00 sports beans
8 14:19 gatorade
9 15:00 small muffin
10 14:17 water
11 14:35 sports beans
12 14:59 gatorade

The good: pace was good to go the distance. The bad: New socks seems to have helped blisters, but the problem isn’t completely gone. The ugly: short 5 miles. But it’s a new week and another chance to keep moving forward.

Quick drive-by...

I was supposed to do my 8 mile lr on Friday. But Friday was my day o' Goos, so I did it yesterday. I managed to get 6.5 in and then quit early. I misjudged how early it gets dark & I had to stop. I felt fine though & certainly could have kept going.

Today was supposed to be 50 mins. w/r. I stopped at 32 mins. - I simply had no energy. I guess that's why you should have a rest day after your long run, huh? I'll remember that next time I juggle things around!

I'll catch up everyone tomorrow!

One solution that works for lots of folks, including me is:

Vaseline on hot spot
Bandaid over hot spot
White athletic tape over bandaid, use enough to make sure it doesn't come off
Thin sock on skin
Double layer sock over thin sock
Vaseline on the hot spot on the sock
Vaseline on the shoe where the hot spot rubs

Another alternative is this stuff called "second skin." They apply it in the medical tents at Disney and it is heaven. It's a cool plastic with little fluid pockets in it. Put the 2nd skin on the spot and then layer up. You can find it at most pharmacies.

Good luck. Those blisters are real killers.

good evening everyone -- thought i'd jump back in after a couple crazy hectic weeks and found 3 pages already! :wave2:

i'll commiserate with everyone on a stinker LW(LR if you may) yesterday -- i'll repost from my BL report:

yesterday got my 8 miler done! i had a really hard time getting going -- downloading my tunes did not go well and i've never had trouble. it took my an hour to get the ipod straightened out and then it still acted up a bit. i'm reseting it and re-downloading before next walk outdoors. anyhow -- then i headed out (an hour later than i'd hoped thinking all along I should be 1/2 way done not just starting!) and took the path to my walking path and the wind was soooo strong, it was very brrrrr!; came to the hill and looked down and lo and behold the path was FLOODED! i was like, "C'mon!" so i turned and headed back to walk in the development -- no route planned just walked and walked for 2 hours and figured it was close to 8 miles. +/- no more than 1/2 mile. also -- since my route was detoured i had a dollar in my pocket and no where to stop and get my water bottle, so cleverly planned at 5.5 miles with a GU in my pocket. so i called DH and he brought me one just over and hour. what a guy  i was ever so glad to walk in my door and be done with it, then realized it didn't even seem like i was walking 2 hours. for me the first 2 are more a warm-up, getting my pace on, etc. after 4-5 i just go on auto-pilot. when i'm outside, this is why i dread TM time b/c i focus way to much on how much more i have to go. and not a bit sore, which is great seeing that i got new orthotics one week ago :goodvibes

just checked weather and it'll feel like a big ole' 1 degree tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. at my walk-time so i'll substitute my WATP (walk away the pound) for my normal 60 min walk. that's just toooooo cold!

getnthinr -- kudos on your event this weekend!!

i must say i'm not loving my shoes, but i feel its too late now to change them. i'm ready to splurge on a new fab pair of socks. my best socks now are the ones I bought to train for my first 1/2 in 2005, so they are like 2 yrs old! :smokin: but you know at most i wear them once a week - i always 'save' them for my long day. anyone else sock retentive?

I'll look for the 2nd skin and I printed out your other tips. I'll be taking them with me to WDW. Geez, besides all my other packing, it looks like I'll be packing a bunch of 1st aid supplies, too. Luckily, I have a friend coming down as part of my scream team who is also a nurse. She'll help if any medical (blister) issues pop up.

Hey, since you mentioned something about Russellville--do you know if they still have the Valentines 5K on the Bona Dea trails??? I've done it once, and it would be taper time for me this year, so it might fit my schedule well!

Good Morning Everyone-

On my second manditory rest day. Taper is going to KILL me!

Oh Mom - I am sock retnetive too. I still "save" my first pair of thorlos for my long runs.

MickeySp - I have 4 black toes - what causes them and what can I do for them? I figured that was just the price of 30 - 40 miles a week.

MelR - its so good to know that all these strange obsessions are completely normal. :lmao: I have been putting myself to bed at 9 pm hoping to prevent a cold. That and I refuse to volunteer at the kids school until after the marathon. That place is a germ factory!

Vic - Glad she is feeling better! Have fun today.

Nancy - I like that "Trust the Penguin" do we have room for another motto?

Ok, another question. I notice that alot of you are taking gu and eating during your long runs. My coaches have told me not to use anything on the long runs. I get powerade and thats it. (Granted, I drank 64 ounces of the stuff on my 20 mile run.) Also, I only eat a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast before my runs. Reason being that I probably won't eat much more than that before the marathon.

They did have me try different things, like gu and sport beans but only to see if my body could handle them. We tried them on short runs.

So I am confused, why are people using gu and gels etc during training?

MelRhoads
12-04-2006, 08:24 AM
Cecilia - I take a gel (about 100 calories) every 40 mins to 4 miles. I also use an electrolyte drink. I burn calories very quickly. I would not be able to finish w/o eating. Right now i'm using powergel and acceleraid. I have a friend who eats much less than me and could probably get by on using the aid stations alone. I'm sure you'll find what works for your body.

Cecelia, please don't take this the wrong way, but I am starting to question some of the things your coaches are telling you. Are these TNT coaches?

This has been bothering be for some time and I am only giving you my opinion because of concern for you. You are training for a marathon and it should be a positive experience :Pinkbounc , you always seem to be in pain. :faint: This is NOT normal. I really think your coaches are asking you to run way too many miles for your first marathon. I know we have had this discussion before, but LR's of 20 or 22 miles is all that is needed. Pushing more long runs is only asking for injury. Experienced marathoners put in these kind of miles, but first timers, in my opinion should not. Haven't you already ran at least one 22 miler or was it even a 24 miler?? :confused3

As for not taking any Gu or Powergel, that is a personal preference, but a lot of literature states that your carbs need to be replenished. Some people don't take gels, because they can't handle them and still finish. Competitive marathoners don't, but they are only out there for just over 2 hours. We will be out there for 4-5 hours!! I am a big girl and burn a lot of calories therefore I definitely need them. Again, do what is right for you, but I think you should at least experiment with them. You will be amazed how you feel during the race and your recovery will be that much quicker as well.

Just give it some thought, I would like to see you running for years to come!

WOW! I could not finish a marathon with only powerade! How are you at the end? I would be starving....Question? WHy do they not want you to eat during the LR? :confused3
I have always been told you really are supposed to eat the gels or something on the LRs. This really holds true if you are going to do it in the marathon. But I guess everyone is different. I normally take a gel every 6 miles...

Just peeking my head in - heading home from Orlando tonight after a spectacular 12 day vacation. I have been keeping up with my training, only blowing off one day, but I have a bad chest cold so it hasn't been easy. I am sure flying back to NY today and then flying for business at the end of the week will not help things any.

I am glad to see that everyone's hanging in there and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as we are in the final stages of this journey. Once I am back to reality tomorrow, I promise to catch up with this thread since I am anxious to see how everyone is doing.

Best of luck to all with training and LR's this week. We're so close and with the holiday's fast approaching, it'll be here in the blink of an eye.

Good Morning TEAM:

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts, advice, and encouragement after my 20 mile stonker run on Saturday. I really appreciate it, and you've already helped me deal with it, put it behind me, and get ready for my next week of training. Yesterday was a rest/recovery day for me. I did a 30 min soak in a cold bath, iced my legs a couple of times, and took a nap. My calfs are still a little tight and sore - so I'm planning on doing a SWOG (deep water run) today to give myself 2 full days to recover from the 20 miler before doing another run.

I wanted to try to catch up with my teammates, and believe me I'm thinking of all of you (even if I don't happen to catch you in my reply).

Amy- I hope your appointment at the doctors gives you some good news today. I'm so sorry to hear that you think your marathon dream may be slipping away. Hang in there!

Jodi- I wanted to WISH you PD :wizard: :wizard: for your injuries too. Keep it up, we're almost there. And as far as the PT goes, they showed me lots of stretches and exercises when I was there over the summer. I'm not that impressed with what you are reporting about your PT.

Judy- I wanted to WISH you all the best for Mist's trial. I hope it turns around soon!

Cam- WTG on your 20 miler followed up by a 5K!!! You rock girl! I hope Howard is doing OK with trying to burn the candle at both ends.

Krista- Thanks so much for your kind words about my 20 miler. I do feel better now, and proud that I finished 20 miles - even though the last 5 were at a walk. When I came in the door, my DW was sitting there and gave me a huge cheer that made me feel so good. You're right, it is an accomplishment. How 'bout them Steelers!!! Can't wait to beat up on the Brownies this week.

Steve- Awesome job on your 20 miler! Are you back home now?

Mel/Chimera- I don't have much advice about pace. Craig, as always, had some sage advice. In fact, I wonder if that was part of my trouble on my 20 miler - running to fast during my 4 min run sections. My first 10 miles were in the 10:20-10:30 mpm range (with 4R/1W intervals), and I wonder if that was just too fast and my knee stiffened up at mile 15 because of it. I would listen to Craig and not run faster during your running section. Maybe, if anything, try running for 5 or 6 min and walking 1.

Christa- Thanks for the encouragement. I must admit, when my 20 mile run stunk on Saturday, I had wondered if I had really gotten in over my head with this marathon. I'm so glad to have my teammates to "buck" me up. Now, you guys better be right!!! Great job on your run! Maybe instead of the "evil queen" you should be renamed the light, fast, young queen.

MelR- Great job on your 9 miler. Frozen hair??? How does that even happen?

Kristi- There's a huge billboard here in Rochester for the Goo Goo Dolls saying they are playing at some Casino in Niagara this month. I thought of you, and then saw that there was a sold out sign posted on the bill board.

Cecilia- I must admit, I have to agree it sounds strange not to take any gels or anything during your LR or marathon. That's a new one to me, and not consistent with the books I've read.

Carrie and Kevin- how are all the Michiganders dealing with UofM having to "settle" for the Rose Bowl? Actually, the prospect of losing to Ohio St twice was not appealing to me at all, and I'm kind of excited of playing USC in the Rose Bowl. That's a good, classic match up.

OK, I'm going to sneak my SWOG in now here at the University pool, and then work through lunch. I'll catch up more later.

Matt, Dave, Celcelia - EVeryone's said a little, but I'll reiterate. I did not finish my 18 last year. Here's what it did for me. 1. I learned night ebfore eating and drinking info. 2. I learned how much durign run fluids matter. 3. I learned hta tperhaps I was disocunting SRs adn XT a bit mcuh. 4. I turned a huge corner in trianign and finished my marathon!!! You will do it. Hang it there! As stated above, it's bestt to ger toyur stonker out of the way now!! :wizard: :wizard:

jodi, Amy, Krista - :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: Hope you're all healed soon! Krista & Amy, I'm very proud of you for stopping the run (or not startting ot) instead of becomming more injured.

Teri & nucpharm -  on teh PRs! Thanks fro the puic, too nucpharm.

Jen - Oh what a feeling! Those longest ever runs are great.

Steven - Hope teh 20-,iler went ok. BTW,w e all give you permission to wear teh tights! ;)

Solo - You picked a lousy day fro a llr. Hope it went ok! COngrats on the victory. I know you initially told me next week would still eb in teh snow boawl. the radio made it sound liek that might change. Any hoe of that?

Side note: I still worry that those of you going above and beyond the MfM plan remember tha tyou open yourself up to more injuries if you go up by m,ore than 10%.

BTW - There is a lot of good info in MfM. Re-reading or readign for the first time might help those suffering with injuries or lack of motivation or migh helo show you how far yu've really come.

OK, here's my scoop  :

I'll try to keep this short (ggod luck ;) ). I do not think I'm cut out fo 18-milers. This makes 2 straight years of calling it quits. We had to run on teh road due to snow and ice. We picked one that we thougth had minimal traffic, no snow and a plowed shoulder. Well, 9+ miles on and off the shoudler messed up my knees/hips and Scott's ankles. I kept thinking that if I could make it to the one plowed bike path I'd be ok. Well, I did, but barely. Unfortunatly, I had messed myself up too much by then and the pain did not go away. I followed my rule of thumb, that if I can't keep going without a limp, I must stop. On the bright side, I know my muscles were strong enough, unlike last year. So, I'm not worried aboout the 20-miler, or even the race, but we need to find a training spot. I'm trying to talk Scott into a one month gym membership, so that we can use the treadmill. Mentally, that would be tough for us, but physically may be the best option. (Scott's really not into that, but I think it's the best bet, so cross your fingers that I'll get through or ther is a miraculous weather change.)

I'm cross-training today so I can give the body an extra day off and then we'll run Tue and Thur if we can find a place. Right now it looks like back and forth on the 1.5 miles of cleared path, provided it's still clear.

So, we'll wait and see. There's not chance of snow melting this week adn the path across from us had about 6" of snow, partially melted and refroze. There's no way it will get clear until there's a melt.

So, I'm following my own advice and going to get over it. Now I just need to re-heal a bit, but I did a cold tub Saturday adn iced all weekend. Hopefully, I'll be good tomorrow.

Happy training everyone!

Sorry , you got no dust from me, but seemed to have gone in your favor anyway. :(

It is a hard balance btwn pushing too hard and not pushing enough. This year I am finally getting over, mostly, my fear of going to fast and not having anything left. It can be a much more mental issue than physical. Do you do your tempo pace exercises. TO me, this would be teh best way to impreove your pace, as opposed to biting off a whole run at a hightr pace. I must admit I was a powerful gu skeptic. I mean I've 50 years old, and I was running just fine way back before gu (as well as waffle trainers, synthetic clothing, etc.), and if it was good enough then it is good enough now.

After hearing the praise of the stuff from one on my undergraduates who ran Boston 2 years ago, I used it in the 2006 full marathon, and I've used it this fall in any training run longer than 9 miles. Honestly, I can feel the power coming back into my legs soon after gulping down in order, some powerade, half a gu, some water. One day I foolishly did 10 and forgot the trio and I really noticed it. So in my experience, the stuff works. It keeps strength in and fatigue out of my legs on long runs.

HockeyKim - Are you jumping in the hot tub right after workouts? That's not actually teh best thing to do. A cold tub will help inflamation and circulate blood better to promote healing those muscles. Let us know if you need the cold tub for whimps post. I'm thinking it would have been quite a match on neutral territory. Still wondering how a loss to teh undisputed #1 team in teh nation on their home field by 3 points compares to losing to Auburn, who was 11 at the time and not currently ranked, by 10 points. :confused3 Nothing against FLorida, but people weren't voting for #2 they were voting against a re-match.

I know that's abnormal, but you really do need more than just owereade if you're going more than 13. DH hate eating during the run, but has learned this year that it make a big diffreence. You'll want to see how you react on a LR before doing it in the race, though.

I haven't read anything in about a week and a half. I'll try to catch up later. But just wanted to tell you guys.....

NOT GUILTY on all five counts of abuse

The trial was a complete joke.

The Sanctuary is asking for extended custody until the civil suits are settled. In the meantime I have my attorney talking to...the abuser....and we put an offer on the table to buy Mist.

:sad2:

One good thing...I did nine miles on Saturday. I was shot from Friday, didn't sleep or eat well, but still had a pretty good run. of course, it helped that I'd get so angry as I was running that I'd speed up. Anyway, I was happy with it. It's the furthest I've ever gone.

Carrie, I jumped in the hot tub about 30 mins after we got back. I wanted to make sure my heart rate was back down and I had to eat I was starving.... :confused3

My hip was a little sore last night and did ice it. Not sure if I could jump in a cold tub. The hot tub feels so nice. I will give it a try.....tips will be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could offer input to you all as well. But I am learning so much from you all.

Thanks

Nothing against FLorida, but people weren't voting for #2 they were voting against a re-match.

I think that's probably true. To me, way down here, Ohio State/Michigan is a regional rivalry, like when we played FSU for the national championship 10 years ago. It was the most important thing in the world to us, but I imagine no one in the other 49 states really cared ;) .

But some credit to the Gators...the SEC was a miserably tough conference this year. I'm still surprised USC lost though and we're seriously in the big dance. How did they end up #2 anyway? And whatever happened to that little school...was it Boise State? Are they still undefeated?

Hi Team :wave2:

It sounds like everyone is working hard!

Here is a quick report on my 18 miler - first off I got a later start on Saturday than I planned, and then the DVD player acted up. That got me a little worried because I was counting on Season Three of 24 to get me through the day (when you mostly walk, it does seem like 18 miles takes the day). Anyway, DH came to the rescue, fixed the DVD player, and off I went. I was doing intervals of W4 @ 3.8 and R1(well for me it is a run!) at 4.5, which averages out to about a 15mpm pace. Things were going pretty well until DH decided to use a hair dryer to de-ice the backdoor.....yep you guessed it! He blew a fuse and the TM came to a dramatic stop! Fortunately I knew approximately how far and how long I had gone. Poor guy felt horrible though....I took advantage of the unexpected stop to make a quick pitstop while he went downstairs and re-set the circuit breakers. After that he decided to head out to a local park to take snow pictures and leave me to walk in peace.

A little after the 13 mile mark my knees were really hurting, actually a kind of burning ache. So I decided to slow things down. I did the last 5 miles at a lowly 17mpm pace, finisihing with a 15:51 average pace. Just barely ahead of the sweepers. But I know from experience that my TM time is always slower than when I am outside. I followed up with a cold tub soak! Yikes! Do we have a shivering smilie?? But I have to say it really does work because today I feel great!

Ok, with all this football talk I have to mention that DS is a student at OSU. He was at the Michigan game, and is still walking on air! In fact he brought home a hunk of goal line grass that I am now responsible for nurturing. He intends to plant it in his backyard someday!! The big game is going to be the 8th, which just happens to be the day after the full. I am going to have to find a way to watch some of it from the World!

Keep up the great work everyone. I am looking forward seeing you all real soon.

Judy -- So sorry to hear about the trial. I have been keeping Mist in my prayers in the hopes she can stay with you. pixiedust:

OMG! MelR thinks I am HARD CORE I feel like Rudolph when he was jumping around celebrating Clarice calling him "cute"! :teeth:  :lovestruc :faint:

Thank you to everyone who celebrated my effort! I still can't believe I am not as sore as I expected.

Kim -- I definitely recommend the cold bath thing. I did that a few weeks ago after a LR and felt so much better afterwards. I took the advice of various people here, though, and wore a sweatshirt and took a huge cup of hot tea with me to the bath tub.

Craig -- I have to say that I have always followed every bit of advice you have shared when it applied to anything I was undertaking, but I am just not sure I can bring myself to try the gu  I just can't imagine getting something of that consistency down, but maybe I'll force myself sometime over the next couple of weeks. I have to admit I've had one in my training bag every time I've gone out for a LW, but just haven't gotten desperate enough to try one yet. I'll have to get a different kind, though, if I'm going to try it. The one I have is a special version that has 2x or 3x the caffeine, and I have cut it out altogether because of the reappearance of my arrhythmia. Do you have a flavor you'd recommend?

Oh, and I am having a clif blocks crisis -- our EMS ran out of all but lime and no one else around here stocks them. Think I'll have to order strawberry on-line. Mel, I can't find your post where you said where you order it from. The good thing is with roadrunner sports vip membership, I don't have to pay shipping, but I'm not sure I want 12 packs of all one flavor.

Carrie -- so sorry your LR was so lousy, but I give you and Scott so much credit just for getting out there in that weather. I am such a wimp! I think a one-month gym membership would make a great early Christmas gift! Then again, be very careful -- I have heard that many runners overdo it on the TM if they are used to being outside and self-regulating on their pace, rather than relying on a machine that is unforgiving and unrelenting.

Cecilia -- I am so glad others have spoken up about your training. I am so excited that you are so geared up for the event, but definitely want you to stay healthy and uninjured and well nourished for the duration. Besides everything else, we want you to love the experience and not come out of it totally fried!

Oh, another thing about outdoor cold-weather running.

Saturday night was in the 40s and we were so COLD walking from the van to registration, back to the van, then to the start. Very cold! I was wearing a long-sleeved tech shirt, then a running pullover with the arms that come down over your hands, then a heavy cotton sweatshirt. I also had on a tech running hat (said "life is good") and running gloves. Very cold at the start. Within the first 100 yards, I was so hot! I stayed overwarm the entire time. ICK! I definitely could have done the race without the sweatshirt, though even the thought of it makes me shiver. If I hadn't pinned my race number to the sweatshirt, it would have come off very quickly.

Just consider this my friendly PSA for the day -- say it with me -- "disposable layers" and "pin your number somewhere other than the top layer". :confused3

Oh, and Saturday night, Andrew finished his first "running all the way" 5K! I think his time was around 28 minutes, so he wasn't as impressed with his pace as I think he should have been, but I am so proud that he ran the entire way! Howard said Andrew kept up with him for quite a while before dropping back a bit.

Cam - You dont HAVE to use Gu. IF what you did for your 20-miler worked, stick with it! (Except eat nmore pre-start). As far as Gu goes, I like orange, adn berry best. They have a little caffeine, but not much. Not like teh 2X or 3X or anything.

Judy - :wizard: Hope Misty gets to stay with you!

Mel - Boise state staid undefeated, but they are from a non-bcs conference. i.e., tehy still have to prove themselves. They did get a BSC bowl, though. I was not overly impressed with USC this year. The game against ND seemeed to be just a calamity. They lost to Orgeon State and had MANY close calls with other teams. Nope, USC did not impress me. We had 1 12-0 and 3 11-1 teams in teh Big 10 this year, one of which was OSU. I don't know why they're saying the SEC is so tough this year, but I guess that's what we'll see Jan 8. I must admit, I've never really followed teh SEC, though. ETA, OK, I see SEC had 3 in the top 10 and 4 (or 5?) in the top 17. That is pretty tough. Big 10 had 3 in the top 6.

Pat - I was goign to do the ESPN club on teh BW if UM made it. I think it would be cool to watch there. Now, it really doesn't outrank WDW time for me, though. ;)

Okay, that price is better than roadrunnersports, but the shipping at RRS is free for VIPs. Guess I'll order it there.

What flavors have you tried? I have now tried strawberry and cranrazz and like them both. The guy at EMS said the black cherry is good. Anyone tried that? I can't do the lemon-lime. For some reason, lemonlime anything gives me heartburn.

BTW -- sport beans fans -- EMS had fruit punch and blue raspberry as well as the orange and the lime.

Hi everyone-

Thanks for all the input.

As for long runs - my longest will be 20 miles and I will only do 2 20 milers. I think however, our plan calls for longer midweek runs (8 & 10 miles) than everyone elses so I guess I am wracking a bit more mileage per week.

As for hurting all the time, well, I admit, I tend to be a complainer. I have had lots of aches but really haven't experienced pain during a run until last week. That turned out to be a cramp and not an injury. I am just hyper paranoid about every little twinge.

As for not eating durig long runs, well, I wondered, which is why I asked. I haven't felt like I needed to eat during a run. I haven't been hungry. I have tried sport beans during shorter (8 & 10 mile) runs and found I liked the way they made me feel AFTER the run but didn't notice any power surge. I guess if I was slowing down at the end of a run, they might help but I tend to get faster at the end of my runs. On my 20 mile run, the last two miles were my fastest. I am taking everyone's advice though. Sifting through it to find what sounds best for me. I have my last long run this Saturday so I need to decide what to do.

Judy - Sorry about the verdict. I hope you get to keep Mist.

wtpclc- The Sec had as many as 4 teams in the top ten at one time. We are our own worst enemy because we end up kicking each other out of the top ten. I don't, however, think that Florida deserves to be playing in the National Championship game. They are always a good team though and we love to beat them :) (I went to Auburn) We gotta come up with a better system than what we have now.

Thank you, I feel much better now. :smokin:

Judy--- :grouphug:

Cam-- 23 miles!!! Wow, WTG!

Cecilia-- It does seem a little odd to me that someone would coach a first-time marathoner to stick with straight liquids throughout the race. Whatever works for you is great, but I might at least try the gels during a midweek run and see what you think.

My humble opinion on the BCS--- Well, I think in this case.... they got it right. :tiptoe: Or at least as right as they could under the current system. Until the NCAA and the university presidents decide they want a legitimate National Division I-A football championship under a playoff system, this will continue to get worse--- the system and formula are not fixable. That would require getting away from a multi-BILLION dollar coporate bowl system, so it'll probably take a while.....

Carrie-- NO JOKE! I only got halfway down my street and had to turn back. The snow wasn't too bad-- but not being able to see the ice underneath made things trecherous. And it was a win Saturday-- can't say much more than that. Can you believe we have a Sunday night game this week?!? :faint: It's going to be a looooong week. (Although it's pretty cool when my day-planner has "ESPN crew arrival" in it :thumbsup2 )

After my failed run yesterday, I was feeling pretty down about the world, so I decided to look over last year's training log and what sturck me was that, even though I feel like I'm not training like I'm supposed to, I'm actually doing better than I was last year. So long as I get these last couple of LLRs in, I'll be fine. The trouble I have been having is a crisis of confidence... and it's really not that bad after all.

Five miles today on the indoor track (cuz I am sure NOT going outside...)

Happy training all!

Sorry, I can't offer to much advice to those requesting it. I'm still learning training techniques myself and I have a hard time sticking to a training schedule.

I don't feel too bad today (after yesterday's 11 miler). A little stiffness. The only thing that's really sore is my blister and some tightness in my achilles. Today's an off day for me.

Susie--I've used both the GU and shot bloks--and from only a taste preference I prefer the shot bloks--I just gag on the GU, trying to swallow that pudding-like consistency just isn't for me--I've told DH that I could just eat the shot bloks like candy--like the cran-razz flavor.

Kevin--Yeah, when it comes down to it, no university president is going to be in favor of losing all that bowl money to get a playoff instead! Always, comes down to money doesn't it???

Did an easy 3 miler today. tomorrow will be 4--but since I"m babysitting all day, I'll have to get up at 5 to do it--We'll see if that happens!

I agree with this, Terri. Andrew was with me in the car when I talked with Judy Saturday and found this out and he said "oh, man, they wouldn't do that if it were a kid!" and we compared it to being a foster parent and having the child removed from your care and placed back in an abusive home. He was as traumatized at the prospect as I'd hoped. Judy and Mist are now in Andrew's prayers as well.

I thought it was cool to see you that fired up about Michigan Carrie. Go Blue!!! Although, even though I'm a true Blue Michigan fan, I have to say that I think the BCS got it as right as they could this time too. There will always be some team that has an argument as long as you don't have a playoff. Also, I know that Michigan only lost to OSU by 3 in their house, but (I think I need to be very careful here) I have to admit it seemed like OSU could score whenever they wanted to in that game. Michigan had the #1 rank run defense, right? But OSU was reeling off long runs for TDs whenever it wanted to. What was up with that?

Anyhow, I know I'm a transplant too, and just passed through Michigan for a little while. So maybe Carrie can forgive me for my heresy. Of course, no one better say any such thing about the Steelers...

Hi Team, I hope that everyone is having a happy Monday! :sunny: Is anyone else loving the Disboards Christmas decorations?? Okay, question time for the experts: do I run tonight or take a rest day? I can see the wisdom of both!! My IT band hurt pretty bad Saturday afternoon and evening after my run, but I have been icing my knee, take Tylenol and stretching and my knee/quad has not hurt Sunday or today. On one hand I would say rest because the rule of thumb says 3 days of rest per injury, but on the other hand I feel guilty resting!! pirate: (Which is a miracle in itself!! :lmao: )

Judy--I am so sorry about Mist. I just can't believe that monster was found not guilty. I have zero tolerance for people who abuse animals. Hopefully she will just sell Mist to you.

Carrie--Do not apologize for your football rants!! I completely understand your passion for the game. :teeth: I cannot believe that you and Scott trained in the snow and ice. Wow!! I am so glad you stopped before you seriously hurt yourself. I have to tell you, after I stopped at mile 13 on Saturday, I kept questioning myself and asking how was I going to go from 16 to 20 miles. And then I remembered that last year you went from 16 to 20 miles and you survived the marathon just fine. Thanks for being an inspiration and a voice of reason. :goodvibes

I haven't been very busy at work today, so I've been playing around on the Internet (shocking, I know ;) ). I was on Runners World and stumbled across this article about what happens when you don't have a good marathon and how to deal with it. Hopefully know will need it, but it was good for me to read, to kind of put the marathon in perspective.

I ask this because over my 4 days on Lido Beach in Sarasota my DF and I spent hours walking and light jogging on the shore line close to the beach. Absolutely wonderful experience and my hip/back/leg felt better than it has in months or really in an entire year. I'm back to being sore today but the 12 hr travel (4hrs lay over in Atlanta) is probably part of of that.

I wonder what I could find in nasty old cold Iowa that would compare to that type of surface? Okay nothing as beautiful or inspiring as the ocean shore but still the surface had an amazing affect on my ability to exercise

Wow, all this football talk and I haven't even managed to get in some smack talk at all! Of course, that's probably because we're all talking college ball, and I only follow NFL. Sometimes I wish I followed college, but there's only so much room in my heart for a team, and my right ventricle is black and the left ventricle is gold (go Stillers!!). :thumbsup2

Oh, funny story real quick. Remember that I'm out of town still? Well, I knew I needed to get an ice bath in yesterday after the 20 miler, but the tub in my room at the hotel would not put out cold water. I decided that I could get some ice from the ice machine down the hall, so I got one ice bucket full and poured it in the bathtub. It melted immediately. So....backup plan. I took the waste basket from the room, went down to the ice machine, and filled it up, too (about 6 ice buckets worth). Brought it back to the room and emptied it into the tub. The ice didn't melt right away, but I wanted to make sure it was cold enough, so I found a second waste basket in the room and brought both of them back to the ice machine. Problem was, I had used up all the ice on the third floor, so I had to take the elevator to the second floor to steal their ice. :) I filled up both waste baskets, picked up my 60 or so pounds of ice, got back in the elevator, and proceeded to go back to the third floor. In the meantime, I spilled several ice cubes on the elevator floor, so I was making quite a mess. So the door to the third floor opens, and much to my complete surpricse, there were about 6 people waiting to get on the elevator. They had been carrying on a conversation, and when they saw me, they stopped talking immediately. So here I am in my sweat pants and dirty t-shirt holding two garbage cans full of ice, dropping ice all over the elevator floor. I didn't know if I should explain myself, but then I realized that anything I said would sound stupid anyway, so I just walked off the elevator and said, "Howdy. Cold evening, huh?" I didn't look back as I walked towards the room.

Yeah, I felt pretty dumb. But I got my ice bath in. :)

Hey, eveyone!!

Princess Nancy/Nancy, I followed the MfM plan and trained for DL in September as my first half ever. I had the exact feelings you are having...even went so far as to ask JB himself at the expo if he could assure me that following his program and only doing 10 miles as the longest run was going to hold me up for the next day. Of course, he just thought it was the sillliest question ever! But, he did emphatically state, as all of our veterans here have, that I was good to go. And you know what? I was!! I did!! I have a castle medal to prove it! The best thing for me, I think, was how great I felt afterwards, Nancy. It was not just a "barely making it to the finish line and collapsing after" finish. If you have followed his program, you will be golden!

The World was great, not a drop of rain and when we drove to MK, I was saying, "This is where we'll be running in 5 weeks!" Instead of the water balloons, let's think...Lean Green Running/Walking Machines! Go Team!! :sunny:

Hi everyone. I have some internet access while I am in Las Vegas, so here I am. My presentation was this afternoon and I was told it went well. Once I get talking, I just go. It was an hour presentation and I didn't have a lot of time to "practice".

So on to training. I ran my 10 on Saturday. Yesterday was a rest day, which was good because between flight delays and just travelling, there was no way I was getting in training. Today was a forced rest day because I didn't have time with show set up and my presentation. The show went until 7:00 tonight. Tomorrow morning I will get up early and go to the health club to hit a treadmill. Then I have the conference.

My body clock is totally off. I was wide awake at 4:00 this morning!!! :sad2:

I forget who wrote what because there are 6 pages in 2 days!!! But...

Judy - :grouphug: I pray you can buy Mist!!!!

As for gels... I have only used Vanilla powergel. To me it tastes like melted frosting and I find it quite delightful. We don't have many places that sell the gels.

OK, I have to get off the internet, but GOOD LUCK to everyone training this week!!!

Hi Everyone,

Just popping in really quick -- I did my BOSU training last night for 45 minutes, plus a lot of stretching.

Today is my third day of therapy, hopefully this go around the woman will actually spend time with me :teeth: . I understand that they have other people but I'm paying just as the others are. :thumbsup2

Hi Dave  ,

How are your legs doing? Wow - 20 miles, I'm jealous....but I guess, my body is telling me to rest!

Jodi- I wanted to WISH you PD for your injuries too. Keep it up, we're almost there. And as far as the PT goes, they showed me lots of stretches and exercises when I was there over the summer. I'm not that impressed with what you are reporting about your PT.

Thanks Dave! Right now, I'm keeping up physically without the running, I hope that makes sense  . I've been keeping up with icing (although, probably not doing it as much as I should).....stretching a lot more - I think that was part of my problem, coupled of course with my overpronation! I'm fighting those Orthonics now - - but if I'm a couple of weeks in and I still don't feel better, maybe that is the way to go.

I'm also keeping up with my crosstraining, I may ride the stationary bike or walk the miles that I should be doing tonight.

My friend and I both have a back up plan of walking Goofy if need be. Hehe, can you believe my husband called me stubborn last night :confused3 :teeth: .

Good morning everyone! :sunny:

It's getting harder and harder for me to make my weekly drive-by. Christmas responsibilities are really interferring with posting and training. I find I'm missing nearly one SW per week due to elfy business. :guilty:

Anyway, count me as another one who had a horrible LW on Saturday. 12 miles produced nickle-size blisters under the ball of each big toe. Those socks have been demoted to "rest days" and I'll never again forget Body Glide on my soles. :sad2: The only consolation is that my pace didn't suffer too much. I came in at 13:36 versus an average of 13:05.

Oh, and my pedometer is surely dying. Some of the LED sections of the numerals don't show anymore. So an 8 looks like an E, a 9 looks like a 4, etc. I really really really hope Santa brings me that Garmin Forerunner 205 I wrote to him about. :cloud9:

UGH! I have done nothing since Saturday's 20 + 3.1. And it's not even because I am sore. Just time issues. Though I do think that going to 3 stores PLUS the mall for 6 hours on Sunday had to have counted for xt, right? And carrying all those packages, boxes and bags . . . strength training, right? :teeth:

It is not looking good for the gym tonight, either, with a WW meeting and errands and then our firm holiday party tomorrow night. Shooting for Thursday night.

Trying to come up with a plan for the next few weekends. I think my plan didn't call for 20 until 12/16, but since I want to get to at least 22 I did the 20 Saturday. Do you think I should "dial back" a bit this weekend and then ramp up again on the 16th to 22? Starting with last Saturday, the plan was for 18-8-20-10-6. Since I did 20, should I modify it to 20-8-22-10-6? Or 20-22-24-10-6? Just not sure how my body will react to any of this because I've never done it before. Looking for advice from my expert WISH friends.

Cam--It goes without saying that I'm NOT an expert, but I personally I would not go beyond 20 miles; maybe 21 or 22, but not 24. I think you are setting yourself up to a potential injury or run the risk of being overtrained. I've heard trainers and doctors advise against running the full distance (unless you are an elite runner) while training because of the impact 26.2 miles can do to your body and the rule of thumb is after the marathon take a day off from training for every mile. What's the difference between 24 miles and 26.2? Can the last 2 miles really be that bad that you need to take 26 days off from running after you finish the distance, but "only" running 24 does not effect you? I'd like to see what some other seasoned runners have to say about this, as I have only been running for a year and a half and I definitely do not know it all. :teeth:

Personally, I need the taper back week of 8 this Saturday to help recover from my 20 miler last Saturday, and prepare for the next really LR in 2 weeks. So I'm planning on doing 20-8-23-10-6. Although, I might do 20-6 (a local 10k run at training pace, not race pace, for a change of scenery) - 20-10-6. After my stonker 20 miler last Saturday I'm debating on whether I should try another 20 miler or go up to 23 miles like I planned. Regardless, I'm doing either 6 or 8 this week.

:rotfl2: So, if my leopard tights will get me stoned, what'll happen with the naked running?? :lmao:

Chimera-- Nah, zebra makes my butt look big. :teeth:

Steve-- I'm not an ice-bather, but that's some committment right there! :thumbsup2

Cam-- Honestly, I think less is more. Back off this week and then get another 20 in next week before taper. Definately don't shorten your taper up whatever you decide to do. I can understand wanting to respect the distance, but you don't want to go into it tired or even worse hurt.

So yesterday's run went very well-- 5 miles in 42:35, or 8:31/mile pace. I kind of don't know what I'm doing today--- last week of classes, crazy work schedule and it's STILL SNOWING. :guilty: I get something in, though.

Four weeks from right now, I'll be in Orlando. That's NUTS!! I can't believe it's coming up so quickly. I honestly believe I'm starting taper-madness early this year. I put in a huge order with RRS the other day, I'm starting to stress over my packing strategy and I got all excited last weekend when there was a college basketball tournament at the Milk House on TV... I had to tell my roomate all about the cool Expo stuff... to which he duly rolled his eyes. I'm so glad I'm busy this month.. I'd go bonkers if I had time on my hands...

Good morning Team.

Thank you all so much - you too Andrew - for your kind thoughts and good wishes. We have asked for an extension of custody until the civil suits are finished. So now we wait to see what happens. :guilty:

To all of you who asked "How can this be" I can tell you that the trial was a complete joke. I could go on and on about it, there was so much just plain wrong. The defense attorney made the abuser out to be the victim. Never mind that the horses, Mist included, were out in below zero temps all winter, with no water, and no food, some with very serious medical problems, hoofs so long they looked like slippers, no dental care...it makes me sick. My horse alone was 400 pounds underweight. She went WEEKS with no food or water, with no shelter in the middle of the winter. Oh and did I mention she was nursing a foal thru all this??? It is unfathomable to me how they could come up with a verdict of not guilty. :furious:

I wouldn't be at all surprised if I end up on some sort of medication by the end of this month. (Not seriously, but you know what I mean.) My emotions just this morning ran from "I won't let anyone take Mist from me!" :furious: to "OMG! A month from tomorrow I am RUNNING A HALF MARATHON!" to "Holy Moly! I have SOOO much to do! Packing! Shopping! Christmas Day meal planning!"

Then of course this morning I pick up the October RW and read about "Taper Tantrums", which, until this morning, I didn't even know I was supposed to have.

On the other hand, maybe that's what I am already doing.

Thank goodness for training. I really NEED it right now.

I did 60 min on the TM yesterday. I don't remember if I reported that. I also did 30 @ 4.2 @ 1% this morning. Then took the stationary bike for a spin.

I'm so far behind I can't even catch up with everyone so please forgive me if I have missed something significant.

Cam - I always thought you were Hard Core. :thumbsup2 Thank you and Andrew for your kind thoughts. It's true, if it was a human child they would be appalled. They obviously don't care a bit about those who can't speak for themselves.

Andrew - Congratulations on your first 5K! You did great!! :woohoo:

I went down to the University track and did 4 miles outside. I wanted to run on the track for a nice cushy surface. The battery on my Garmin went out right before I started, so I have no idea about time or pace, but it felt really good.

Anyhow, I was thinking about your question while I was running, and remembered this piece of advice from John Bingham. Remember, the rest days and rest weeks are when your body gets stronger. It needs that recovery time to repair itself, and you may find that your 20+ the following week will go that much better.

Cam - Good plan. I'd lean towards 20.5 or 21. ;)

Judy - SO, you're jumping from a 9-mile max to 13? That's almost 50%. (Yes, it is on total week's mileage, but it still seems like a huge jump to me.) Did you read Krista's article? ALthough I know many who tained for teh full added 2 miles to their 20 miler and were ok, please remeber that what you're suggesting is like adding 4 to teh full training compared to your training so far. If you feel you MUST go more, don't go more than an extra mile. Just my overly worrisome opinion. :goodvibes

Christa - :rotfl2: "Do what I type..." The differnce her is that your body has been doing this stuff (those distances) much longer than ours. So, I completely undertand when you do it. ALso, you use a plan that work syou up to that distance IIRC. Finally, you speak as someone who's not the world's laziest marathoner. ;)

Cam - Have you called the resort? DId you check the scret pocket on the garment bag? :p Not speaking from expereince or anything. ;) Writing my letter to sant for you now.

Note: Just randomly adding miles right now is not likely best. I see where you are coming from, truly I do. However, there's a diff btwn picking a plan that maxes at 24 and is longer to accomodate for such and just adding miles to your long run at the end. I know many have done it, but if your body tells you no, please listen. Stepping off of soap box.

The most you have done before is 9 miles, right? So, you are going from your longest run before your next one being 9 and then adding 2 miles to teh 11-miler to make it 13. (That would be the same as a full marathoner doing a longest run of 18 and jumping to 24 miles for our next one) I would stick to 11, but if you have to do more, don't add more than 1 mile, making it a 12-miler. That would be comparable to the people who didi 22-milers for the full instead of 20.

That time frame is fine. Having your longest run at 3 weeks before should let you taper just fine. That still seems like a huge jump to me, though.

No no! I've been paying attention to everyone here. :teeth: That LR would normally be 11 miles. So I was just going to make it 13. But my concern was that is was three weeks before the Half. is that too close?

Hey Judy, I agree with Carrie, those two extra miles (if you decide to do 13) will mean nothing at this point, but a solid 11 miles will allow your body to repair and restore and that will be worth millions! :thumbsup2

Vic, welcome back. Hope DW is feeling better.

Cam, did I read correctly, you did 20 miles in the morning and then another 5k that evening?? :cool1:

Ran an easy 4 miles today and now I am off until my half-marathon on Saturday on Kiawah Island. IT band is starting to act up again. I foolishly tried a new pairs of shoes Brooks Adrenalin. I think they had too much stability for me because I have a little lower knee pain that is new! Those are going back.

OK! My short run was supposed to be around 6 miles today but......
I got to 5.80 and a boys weight training class came in to the WO room....well I couldn't just stop as soon as they came in b/c they didn't know I was running an 8 something min mile (7.5 on the TM...not sure how fast that is).....so I pushed it up to an 8 on the TM and did another mile.....
Why, not sure...maybe I want to prove something or  I am just stupid. :rotfl2: Not sure what I need to prove to a bunch of 16 YO boys. :confused3 Maybe it wasn't the class but it could have been that "Pour Some Sugar On Me" came on...good song to run to.

Dave/nipple boy - you do know since many of us have never met, we are forming mental pics of everyone right now. Guess what my mental picture of you is :cool1: ...Batman. I had to have this same discussion w/ vic last week when we started in on the body hair talk!! Oh, and, btw, hair freezes when it is in the 20's and sweaty!! (or at least mine does) You would think that all the salt from the sweat would make it melt, but maybe it just makes it more cold. i'll ask phil about that one!!

Vic – SO glad you had a good trip. Hope DW is back to 100% now.

Dear Santa,
Cam has been such a good girl, please bring her a brand new sparkly Garmin...

Aren’t you sweet, Judy, but could you ask him to be sure it is the one with lime green trim and lettering? I am not sure they are all like that. And, well, it just wouldn’t be the same without lime green, ya know?

Carrie – I have checked every pocket of every bag, but am also going to call the resort. UGH!!! Now is when I wish there were a secret pocket in my mickey tapestry overnight bag to check! :(

Cam, did I read correctly, you did 20 miles in the morning and then another 5k that evening??
Yes. A little insane, right? Have I told you how passionate I am about the work of Special Olympics? When it came right down to it, having paid the registration fee would not have satisfied me. I had to put some sweat into it too. I know I am  Good luck with your half, and I hope your IT twinge gets better quickly.

Christa – You crack me up! Those 16 y.o. boys were probably checking you out! :cool1:

Okay, so we have Dave/NippleBoy and we have Stephen/Ice Man and we have Vic/Strong Nose Hair Guy. Who am I missing?

With all this talk about taper madness, lets not forget taper PARANOIA, which I have started big time.

I am not normally a germaphobic person, but I have already been wiping my phone at work with one of those anti-bacterial wipes (I am the only one that ever uses my phone!!). I've already bought Airborne to take before my company Xmas party and for the flight down to Orlando. I'm having DH do most of the Christmas shopping, so I am not in the malls for extended periods (ok I still go to the mall - I am not TOTALLY nuts!). When someone at work cleared his throat I took two steps backward! Every car on the road is a potential hazard! (I was actually bumped from behind when I was stopped at a light last year just before I left for the half!). I am being so careful out walking in the snow packed parking lots. I even think to be careful carrying the laundry downstairs to the washer. Gosh, I am driving myself nuts sometimes!!

But it will be so worth it when I get that Mickey medal!!

Happy training to all my wonderful WISH teammates!

Ok, I was skimming & maybe I missed this, but I just saw this on allears:

The Riverside Mill Food Court at Port Orleans Riverside will be closed from January 2 until mid-April for refurbishment. The food court will continue to offer a VERY limited menu for breakfast and dinner and a small number of "grab-and-go" items at lunch during the refurbishment.

Isn't this where we are meeting Friday night?! Is that still a go?

I am lovin' the nicknames! These boys need shirts with their new WISH names on them!!! :rotfl:

Back on topic, I just got back from 40 mins. on the bike at the Y.

Hopefully, I can get 8 hours sleep tonight since I am playing hookie tomorrow. Chad has an all-day test thing with Verizon, so I am using one of my many sick days that I am going to lose at year end. :teeth:

Hi Team!! This is just a drive-by post as some of you were wondering how my appointment with the sports med doc went. Well....I'm still not running :guilty: and they think it's a combination of things causing the nerve to be compressed and causing my pain. Piroformis Syndrome, Tilted Pelvis and a 2 cm leg length discrepancy. Basically, my right leg is a mess :(. I can walk with less pain now so that is certainly an improvement :) (trying SOOO hard to look on the bright side). Pretty much one of those things that's hard to diagnose and difficult to treat. I can run...basically....when there is no pain. Great! I'm starting to completely freak out. This week my schedule...instead of training...is like this:

Mon: Sports Med Doc (diagnosed w/ above issues)
Tues: Physical Therapy Appt. (ouch!) and Sports Massage/Stretching Appt.
Wed: Chiropractor
Thurs: Phys. Therapy again
Fri: Podiatrist

Soooo....does any of that count as XT or training ???? In all seriousness I'm going to do pilates tomorrow and thurs and yoga on friday.

This past weekend instead of my 18 mile long run....I did an 8 mile long walk. My butt muscles are sooo sore. Wow...didn't realize how different those muscle groups must be LOL! I give MAJOR kudos to all you marathon walkers out there. Wow..... that is TOUGH work! I'm really impressed with you folks who walk...anyone who says it's easy is CRAZY!!!!!

Just a few people I need to shout out:

Judy: :grouphug:

Krista: How are your legs feeling?

Dave: nananananananananaaaaa BATMAN!!!!! *POW* *SMASH* :rotfl2:

Jodi: How are you doing? :grouphug: I truly know what you're going through!!! I hope your injuries are beginning to feel MUCH better!

Cam: Wow...you are a machine!!! Goodness girl...please be careful with those miles!

Ok...gotta' try to catch up with you guys tomorrow. I'm having serious issues with the reality that I might not be able to run the marathon. But it's important for me to touch base and see how everyone is doing.

Amy - that is pretty much how my body is built too!! It is usually my left right leg that hurts, but my left leg is longer (i think i can't remember) Anyway, this year (since last february) my left booty has been sore and sometimes my left hamstring. Anyway. I feel your pain. I do some stretches for pirformis synd and they seem to help. I hope you get better over the next few weeks. You have put in the steps and it is pretty much taper time anyway. Don't worry, you'll be able to do it.

Amy, so sorry to hear about your difficulties. :grouphug:

Just remember all those months you put down a good base. It won't disappear in a week or two. Keep up with your treatments and cross training this week and see how things are next week.

Oh and yes, walking is hard! I started a 5 run 1 walk in an attempt to do that for the half and I was really sore after! You walkers rock! And those of you who walk 13, 14, 15 minute miles, all I can say is WOW, I could barely keep a 16 minute mile walk going!

Check out the new thread on the $40 off shoes I posted!

Was trying today to figure out how to work my LR since DH is working nights until forever it seems, and I hate imposing on dsis every weekend to watch the kids. SO tonight, I had this brilliant idea--after putting the kids to bed I was going to try to do my 14miler on the TM. :lmao: I bow down to those that do LR/LW consistently on the TM! :worship: I made it 12miles in 2:13. Now I feel like I'm going to die! Oh, and found out tonight that once you reach 99min99sec on my TM it comes to a screeching stop! No gradual slowdown--just stop! That was painful! Now it's off to soak and shower for me--then to collapse in bed!

Stephanie - Thanks for teh warning. As someone who could end up on a TM for LRs, who is a big TM novice, I appreciate that tip! Yikes. I can just see myself getting all healed and killing myself when the tm stopped.

Well, I did 1 min on teh TM and it hurt. So, I switched to teh eliptical and was ok. The progran changed and it hurt, though, and I could not figure out how to set it so that it felt good again. SO, 20 minutes on eliptical. FInished my 50 minuters on the bike. Boy do I have a lot to learn about gym equipment. I'm hurting today, but have to clean the house tonight. That will be XT as I clean out the upstairs bedroom. Sad that I'll likely have to ice after house cleaning.

Hi Everyone-

oo, Things are going wild here! I didn't hear the dog catcher story though. That I need to hear. I was once attacked by a mob of dogs on a run but it was the little dachsund that actually bit me. I have had no end of teasing about being bit on the thigh by a dachsund (I'm 5'7" - he jumped) Now, when I run alone, I carry pepper spray.

Iceman was my favorite charactor in Topgun. There is something about the way he chewed that ice..... And will I ever be able to look at Dave and not imagine a batman suit? lol.

Well I ran in my new shoes (Brooks again) and my new Super Feet insoles. The guy at Fleet feet was really pushing the Super Feet for there greater stability and cushioning. I am a pushover for anything with the word cushion in it. Well, I couldn't even feel the road. I am not sure this is a good thing. Nice for the knees but I think my stride was slightly off.
I am going back to my old shoes for my mid week run and will try the new ones again tomorrow.

I have decided to stick with just powerade for my long runs. I did alot of research and the majority of articles say that liquids are all you need DURING the run. Actually, I was surprised at how many advised against using gels/fuels and powerade/gatorade at the same time. I just want to stick with what works for me.

Happy Trails Everyone!

Good morning TEAM!!!!! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: I called my Mom this morning at 8:00 and told her she'll be running one month from today! I'm feeling pretty good today (thanks for asking Carrie), I ran last night for the first time since Saturday. I took it verrry easy, doing r3/w2 running at 10:54 and walking at 13:05--ave 12.07 miles, basically 2 minutes per mile slower than what I had been doing, but I think it helped. I did 3.5 miles (I couldn't decide if I should 3 or 4 miles :teeth: ) and I was basically okay. I had a little pain up in my quad, but it never worked it's way down to my knee, digging out my ITBS band probably helped with that. I may have to run the marathon a little slower than I hoped and I may not be able to do 5/1 like I planned, but I'm still going to be able to run the marathon and that make me want to :dancer: :dancer: :dancer: !

Amy--. I am so sorry. But you have an amazing base built up and I think you will do just fine in the marathon. Just keep up with your cross training for the next month and I really think you will be good to go. I read in Runners World a few months ago that some guy got hurt while training for a marathon and ended up doing all of his training on an elliptical machine. Not only did he finish his marathon, but he had a PR. It's completely possible to run a marathon when you can only cross train, once you have a solid base. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

MelR-- :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I would be a mess; I don't run with any jewelry on!!!!!

Andrew--Congrats on RUNNING your 5K!!!! Great job!!

Anne--I saw that article in Runners World. All I can say is

Carrie--I hear ya about housework being cross training. Between the marathon, Christmas, work, and day-to-day living, I've been neglecting my house. One of these days I'm going to have to pay the price though.

Cecelia - Last year, there was a lot of talk about the "Big Dogs" here. Then, when someone went missing, Lily would track them down and bring them back. Therefore, she was the Dog Catcher. DOi what you're comfortable with as far as food during the race. I have heard that you should not mix, although I ted to do it some, especially near the end. I am glad you have decided what to do with the eating/drinking. THis is something everyone has to decide for themselves......

Just an interesting fact I discovered.....You all may just go Duh, we already knew this, but here it goes.....
I tallied up my calories that I burn during an 18 mile LR (takes me about 2:40 and I am 113 lbs), I burn over 1500 cals during this amount of time....if you weight over 113, you would burn even more calories....DUDE! NOW THAT IS why I am hungry all the time! I need to tally my cal for the week b/c I do 30+ miles in a week...not including any weight training or xtraining.

Wow miss a couple of days and boom 7 more pages.

Cruella - I was told black toe is the result of your toe punding against your shoe, solution you need different shoes. I changed to Asics and no more black toe. Each runners feet are different so find what works.

Aladdin - great article, I loved they had advice for 1st timers. I am so nervous I think I may lose it on the plane down.

Ok question about gels - sorry if this has been answered already.

Are there any that are better sugar wise? My body does not tolerate sugar well. I tried the beans but the do not seem to give me any extra boost.

Cecelia - I KNOW my exercise physiologist agrees with people here, you need to replenish during a full. That is why they make it available. Your body will eat your stores and when they are gone it goes for muscle for energy. Hence faster fatigue. Also with so much liquid you need to watch for hyponetremia(sic), which can be worse than dehydration.

Doing what is right for you is always the correct choice. We're all different, and have had good and bad experiences with the seemingly infinite number of variable we face in long runs and races. When you are out on the Marathon course, although surrounded by others you are also completely alone, as no one else can get you around the course. Others can help, but those 1,000+ strides per mile for 26.22 miles have to come out of you.

Good luck in these last few weeks and in the race. I'm looking forward so much to the race, but today I literally couldn't get out bed, completely fatigued. I'm playing hookey today and hope I have some bounce in my legs tomorrow. 7 mile run? I don't need no stinkin' 7 mile run!

OK everyone ..... here is my humongous catch up!!

Mel - Congrats on making the National Championship Game!!

Craig - I agree with you about Gu. The stuff works miracles. However, be VERY careful with powerade and Gu. I learned that lesson the hard way last Saturday. I usually only take water on runs with me, but instead I took gatorade. Gu and gatorade don't mix especially Vanilla Gu and Mango Gatorade. I almost upchucked right then and there. It took everything I had to stomach down the rest of the Gu.

Judy - I am so sorry about Mists trial. I hope she accepts your offer to buy her.

Kim - Be careful about a hot tub after a run. I used to do that at the gym, get in the whirlpool about 30 minutes after my run, and I started getting shin splints something fierce. As soon as I stopped doing that and started taking ice baths the shins splints stopped.

Colleen - That was me too. I have run 20, 22, and will be running 24 on Saturday. Then I start my taper. You are also not the only one who's friends and family worries about them on LR, especially the ones in the dark. I run on an old Rail Trail, and before the sun comes up it can get a bit scary. There's woods on both sides of the trail, perfect place for someone to hide, and the only thing I carry with me is my cell phone. Then last Saturday I forgot my cell phone in the car and DH tried to call me, after about an hour of not being able to reach me he started driving out to the trail, and had already asked his parents to come help him look for me. Luckily I got back to the car and phone before he got to the trail, but he was scared to death. I HATE running alone.

Steve - Sounds like my plan for while we are at WDW. Except I am gonna get into a cold tub, and let DH do the ice runs for me!!

Kelley - Don't feel bad, you aren't the only one who has been having a hard time keeping up. Between this and the photo contests I feel like I am constantly behind.

Christa - Maybe this is why I was so sick during and after my 22 miler. See my response to Craig for details......From the article you posted "In addition, never wash down gel with a sports drink instead of water; if you do, you'll end up with a 'molasses stomach' (gel must always be swallowed with the right amount of plain water)." I guess I know what NOT to do this Saturday!!

Pat - you are definately not the only one feeling a bit paranoid. My kids both have horrible coughs, and I keep praying they don't pass it on to me. And Every day for the past 3-4 days there has been a car accident REALLY close to me (within a couple of cars), so I am hoping it's not my turn next.

Well, I have been a complete and total bum. I haven't run AT ALL since Saturday. I am not hurting, just not motivated. Add to that the fact that it is freakin' cold, and I just haven't been able to get my behind out of the house. When it's cold in the morning the last thing I want to do is stick poor little Lucas in a jogging stroller and make him suffer so I can get my run in. I have a 24 scheduled for this weekend, and then it's taper time!!! The low is supposed to be 38 on Saturday. I don't know how to run when it's that cold outside. This is Florida people it isn't supposed to get that cold. I keep telling myself to just suck it up and do it, that way if it is cold during the race I will be prepared for it, but at the same time I keep trying to talk myself out of it. So far I have tried telling myself that I already ran 20 (plus 3 mile walk), and 22, that I don't really need to do 24, and I can just start my taper now!! Does that work?! DH has tried to suggest that we buy him a bike and one of those buggies you attach to the back of the bike for the kids, and that he would just go with me so I wasn't running by myself. The problem is I don't know ANYTHING about bikes. I walked into Target yesterday and felt completely dumb. I don't know what all of these different things are for. I just want a bike we can attach a little trailer to that will go 24 miles!! By the way, if any of you bike savvy people have any advice I would be very greatful. ;)

With the holidays so close I feel like a chicken running around with it's head cut off. I have pies to bake for a family get together this weekend. I have cookies to bake for my son's Christmas party at school. I have an entire Christmas dinner to do for my family, and Michael just got invited to his first birthday party with friends at school. Try to add running in there, along with Christmas shopping, and keeping the house taken care of. Well, I'm sure you all know, it's enough to make me wanna bang my head on a wall!!

ok, I'v printed out the official marathon course map, and I wanted to put little stickers at the sweeper points. I have a copy next to my desk at work and on my TM for the LWs. The question has to do with the first sweeper location. According to the sweeper schedule it is at 2.7 miles, at Epcot's main entrance. Well, that can't be right because the blue course is along the back stretch of WS between miles 2 and 3. Anybody remember the location from last year? Of course all you speed demons probably zoomed past and probably never noticed a sweeper bus. I'm not overly concerned about being swept at that point, but it makes me wonder if there are any other irregularities with the course map.

On another note, my TM also times out at 99:59. The first time it happened it freaked me out a little because I was worried my TM was malfunctioning. Once I figured it out I just anticipate the stop ahead of time.

Keep up the good work everyone! We will be in WDW soon!!

Dana - It is not easy to get out in the cold. Besides the obvious discomfort, your body has to work harder to overcome the cold. If it is taht cold for you, you could shave a oucple miles off of your LR. However, last year it was 34 at the start of teh full. It as the same or colder fro the half. You may want to be rpepared. :wizard: :wizard: Trust me, I know how miserable it is.

Pat - I keep forgetting. I am so with you on your paranoia! have you purchased any Zycam. If teh airbone does not keep you healthy, taking Zycam as soon as you start feeling sick will cut down recovery time. Good luck! :wizard:

Pat, please explain. They sit there with the bus at certain points along the way and if you don't cross by there by the prescribed time they take you away on the bus, is that it?

OMG if that happens to me..they might as well put me in a hearse because I will DIE of embarrassment!!!

Just got back from the Y. I put in 4 miles around (and around) the track. It only about 30 degrees here today, so I chickened out & stayed inside!

I forgot to take a couple preventive puffs of albuterol before I left the house. And yes, I should always have my inhaler with me, but of course I didn't. After mile 1 I was feeling my lungs tighten up, so I went to all walking.
12:15
13:12
13:43
13:16
52:28

I was happy with that since miles 2-4 were all walking.

Someone asked about pepper spray. I ordered some online years ago since I walk into work in downtown Boston at 4am alone. You need to check with your state though. NH doesn't require anything to carry it. In MA you need special permission (or whatnot) from the police dept.

Judy - I also take the Gu like a shot! Who knew? :rotfl:

Judy -- No matter how much anyone said it to me last year, I still worried, but PLEASE believe me -- YOU WILL NOT BE SWEPT! You have been putting in the steps are so wayyyy ahead of the sweepers.

Of course, I owe our pace to Rhonda who kept us moving along and watched the Garmin like a hawk to make sure we stayed ahead of sweeper pace. Still not sure I'd have hustled without her. :lovestruc

Judy - ALthough I believe with all my heart that you will not be swept, if everything goes wrong race day, there is no shame in being swept. Even teh penguin did not finish his first marathon. (Keep in mind htat's why he develloped teh MfM plan.) With teh exception of the random sweeping in 05, I have heard nothing but nice things about the sweepers. I have heard that peole on bikes will warn you if you are getting close and tell you that if yuo do not pick up the pace by a certain point, you will have to get on teh bus. I must repeat, though, that YOU WILL NOT BE SWEPT.

I've got a question for all of you experts and pros: Should I get a flu shot or not? I have the opportunity to get one through my work but I'm worried about it for some reason. Stephen and I tease my Dad about this all time!! He is walking the half, but really isn't training at all. He does he long walks, but that's all the "training" he does. (I know :sad2: ) He walks about a 17:00 mile, obviously not fast enough at Disney. So Stephen and I always say that the sweeper bus is going to be chasing after him, right on his tail as he is frantically trying to stay ahead and they are going to chase him right up to the finish line and go crashing through the grand stands in the attempt to sweep him. :rotfl2:

Oh, and another thing Stephen says; we got my Mom and Dad matching shirts to wear for the marathon from www.runningbanana.com (awesome site and FANTASTIC customer service, by the way), on the front we printed 13.1 and on the back it says "got Donald?". Stephen says he's going to write "NO!" under Dad's "got Donald?" :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Don't worry about my Dad getting his feeling's hurt, he says he doesn't care if he gets swept or not. I know :sad2: :confused3 :sad2: .

Judy, Judy, Judy, I didn't mean to scare you, but yes I have seen the sweeper buses (or is it busses??) parked along the side of the road. I've never been swept, my pace is just (and I mean JUST) under the required 16mpm when you factor in pitstops. Just once I'd like to be able to stop and take a picture with one of the characters, instead of taking pics on the fly with strangers! in them....I'm glad to hear that there is some warning.....

I really don't think you have anything to worry about!! Soon you will be proudly wearing your medal. Oh, BTW, remember to wear it everywhere, and be sure to stop in at Epcot's Innoventions and do the email/picture thing - there are kiosks where you take your own picture and can email it to anyone. See my siggie for my pic from last year. It is a really cool thing to do.

Judy, Judy, Judy! I was so scared of the infamous sweeper buses last May during the Minnie. It's just natural! You will be fine. Your pace is great from what you've posted here. And I've noticed I go faster during a race than any training walk/run. Well, let's correct that. IF I took out my gazillion stops to take pis with characters, I'd be ahead of my training pace! :rotfl:

I am going to try really, really hard to beat a 3 hour half. That's what my Mom did last year & she runs. (and I am evil & want to beat her!) It's totally do-able for me, if not for the damn characters along the route! I am going to need help resisting that temptation. In this respect, I am kind of glad the half is now an out & back - less park time means less pics for me to take! ;)

Happy Trails!

Oh you guys! You have much more faith in me then I do. :grouphug:

Well, I just did the math, since I just so happen to have my splits from my last LR of nine miles. According to my ninth-grade math.....If last Saturday was the race, and if I did 4 more miles at the same pace...I'd be done in 2 hours 56 minutes. Now...this does not take into account pit stops and crowds. Or any other issues which I refuse to name at the moment.

So, on paper, I'm fine. It's just...that fear of the unknown....that fear of having trained for a year with this one race in mind then blowing it....that fear of coming home and telling everyone that doubted me that I didn't finish....

However, I know if I just draft off of Zebra Butt like I was planning on.... :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

Hey everyone!

Judy - You'll do fine.

Well, I've been going over my training schedule, and since I'm now in "catch-up" mode, I've come up with the following.

12/6 - 4 miles
12/7 - 4
12/10 - 8
12/12 - 4
12/14 - 4
12/16 - 5k race (maybe)
12/17 - 9
12/19 - 4
12/21 - 4
12/24 - 10
12/26 - 4
12/28 - 4
12/31 - 6
01/03 - 3
01/06 - 1/2 mary (ME FIXED IT!) :lmao:

I figure if I can get a 10 miler in I'd feel pretty comfortable for the race.

Whatcha think? :confused3 :)

No no! I've been paying attention to everyone here. :teeth: That LR would normally be 11 miles. So I was just going to make it 13. But my concern was that is was three weeks before the Half. is that too close?Judy, I'm hoping that you have decided not to do that many miles. Besides, that would be like doing the event before the event. Let this trip be your first. I know you will make it. I'll be behind ya (you go faster than me now). You will have the best time if your first time is in "The World." Stick with the original plan.

So, on paper, I'm fine. It's just...that fear of the unknown....that fear of having trained for a year with this one race in mind then blowing it....that fear of coming home and telling everyone that doubted me that I didn't finish.... As has been said, you WILL make it. You go first and I'll push you along.

Everyone, I'm feeling it too. ONE more LR for me and this is it! I have the excitement, those butterflies. I remember and know what you are all going through if it is your first. As you do the last LR, be it a good one or a stonker. Put it in your mind...start now. You can do this. You will do this. You have trained and it will happen. Now's the time for determination. The good news...I ran 2 miles tonight...straight through, no fussy intervals. Walked most of mile 3. Ran and walked mile 4. Total time was 51:14. I maybe one of the 10 most anal people in the world so the whole interval thing that's regimented with numbers to track has always appealed to me. I think my brain has been rebelling though, so I'm planning to make Wed night a freeform run where I just do what feels good.

The bad news...appt with podiatrist on the 18th. My foot's been complaining since the 10 miles on Sat. Looks like I may be asking Santa for orthotics.

Big thanks to everyone for helping with my training questions. I've put two heart rate training books on my Amazon wish list!

I'm eating everything that's not tied down lately, too. People have been bringing lots of goodies to our office...dangerous place to be this time of year!

Krista...thanks for the heads-up...I'm starting Donald Driver and Muhsin Muhammad this week. Still having tight end troubles.

Judy...you have no worries with the sweepers at that pace.

Zebra butt? Ya know, a black tshirt and hot pink feather boa would work with that...at least it did for Dennis Rodman :teeth:

Hi all:

Long time no anything. :confused3

I am in a bind. In just a few days I will be finished with finals (Dec 15) and I need to put some time and miles in to get ready for the Goofy. Any words of wisdom, a mini-training schedule to follow, advice, prayers, ANYTHING would be appreciated. I have done little running of late due to my very hectic grad school schedule. Unfortunately I signed up for the Goofy way before I decided to to back to get my MBA. I am sticking to my guns and going ahead with it, but I'll need some help from you all. :thumbsup2

Please e-mail me your thoughts and suggestions (keenho@aol.com) for a ramp up and ramp down for the final three weeks before the events. I will be putting in as many miles as I can up until the end of the year, then tapering down as rapidly as possible.

My goal is to take it easy and finish the Half in something around 2:30-2:45 and to have fun. I want to save myself for the Marathon the next day. I ran a Marathon earlier this year (in May) and I know what it'll take. I am not sure I have it in me right now. So, my goal for the Marathon is to finish.... no time desires. I just want to finish.

Thanks! Happy Taper-Madness!

Howard - i can't offer you any advice on a quick training plan (I have enough trouble getting my regular training in). But, you are in much better shape than I am and i think if you just take it easy and go with how your body feels, you'll definitely meet your goal of finishing.

Since you're not trying for a specific time finish, why not work out a training schedule that would have you doing a long run on marathon weekend? Since you haven't been doing much running all along, do you really need a taper?
(I don't know, maybe some of the more experienced runners can answer that.)

But I have no doubt in my mind that you will finish both races! :thumbsup2

Howard: LOADS of pixie dust to you as you get ready for the Goofy! I know the feeling...I'm still not running due to my mystery injury that is yet to be fixed lol. But I have every intention of getting to that starting line. I am in sheer panic mode right now as my longest run was only 16 miles :faint: . But honestly your story from last year inspired me to not give up and hang in there despite obstacles. So we all know what you are capable of! I know you'll reach your goals and I'll be thinking of you as you finish up finals and get into some training. I have no advice to offer unfortunately!!! Just be careful and don't push yourself too hard. What a year this has been for you!!!!

Colleen: Yep...lol....was just ordering from AG before I came here to the dis tonight. I've been getting stuff delivered left and right this week :). All the shopping helps to take the edge of the insanity that is building since I've stopped running LOL.

OK guys...once again...remind me....if my longest run was only 16 miles....just saying I don't get better in time to hit the 18 or 20. I can still do this thing right? :confused3 :guilty: I am so nervous I can't sleep (thus the late night posts lol). Hi Team,

Sorry I haven't been on much this week - - I had intended to get on more but work has been so busy.

Last night I did end up doing 5 miles on the threadmill
Mile 1: 15:45 min/mil
Mile 2: 11:45 min/mil
Mile 3: 15:45 min/mil
Mile 4: 11:45 min/mil
Mile 5: 15:45 min mil

I did loads of stretches before and after running/walking....my physical therapist said that I shouldn't baby it so much and start running but I'm just trying to be senseable about it! I am going to see the doctor on Monday, unless I am feeling better by then....don't get me wrong I am feeling a little bit better and I know it's probably a slow process.

I see the therapist this morning and I think I have my personal trainer session tonight but I still have to call her to confirm, I think I might have marked my calendar wrong.

So as Disney gets closer is everyone else becoming -- well for a lack of better wording -- becoming an air head? I just feel at work I can be doing so much better but my mind is so much on this race that my thoughts are just all over the place. Really people at work must be like :confused3 "What's up with her?"

Wow, I'm quite chatty this morning, huh? :teeth: Well, have to run......I hope to catch up with you all sometime soon :goodvibes

Where is that Sunny???

Christa - I was thinking of you in the car yesterday...I was listening to the radio and "Pour Some Sugar On Me" came on!!! :rotfl: I was driving around with it blaring - are we children of the 80s or what? :lmao:

Howard - I have no advice for your Goofy training. But if it makes you feel any better, Chad hasn't run at all in 3 weeks! :scared1: On a lighter note, he trained even less last year and did fine with the Goofy. In fact, he did much better than he expected to and felt fine afterwards!

I have 30 mins. xt on deck for today & I am doing it no matter what. Chad is in Boston for testing again today (don't even ask) - so I will pull out an exercise DVD during Zack's nap if I have to.

Howard - You still have a pretty strong base adn determiniation like no one I've ever known. However, I'm thinking you may want to take it very easy for teh half with a full elft for SUnday. Perhaps Judy can draft you? :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: Good luck with exams!!!

Amy - Yes, you can do it on 16. Penguin says so, SUnny knows people who did it on 16 the first time, you can do it. heck, I may be doing it on 16 myself if things don't get better, but I know that that is an overwhelming htought when it's your first marathon. The key is to be healed, though.

Mel - Congrats on teh 2 miles running!!! The rebel run sounds like a good change of pace. :rotfl: On the Dennis Rodman comment.

Awesome pics Wendy! (thank for linking us, Christa!)

Heather - :wave2:

Ok, after looking at those pics, I have a funny story. I think it was the 2005 marathon. I was doing my usual Kristi-Marathon of chasing Chad around the course, seeing him at as many points as I could. I saw Chad by the GF and monorailed back to TTC, to get a bus to Animal Kingdom. On the way to the TTC, this man was asking me questions about the route. I had the small course pocket map with me and showed him. I kept thinking he looked familiar, like one of those Petty NASCAR guys. I bused to Animal Kingdom and if I remember correctly, he bused to MGM instead.

Well, after seeing Richard Petty just now on the Victory Junction pics - it was him! Didn't his son run the full that year at WDW?

Of course I tell them they can't eat raw cookie dough because of Salmonella poisoning so they would never suspect where the dough goes. :rolleyes1 Cookie dough just doesn't taste as good if you don't have to sneak it.

I have done NOTHING since Saturday's miles, and had our firm holiday party last night so I am super-motivated to get to the gym tonight and do at least 4 miles. Tomorrow's cross training may end up being shopping. :guilty: The plan is for 8 in the wee hours of Saturday morning before coming in to work for as long as I can stand. Maybe not 4:30 a.m. wakeup like last Saturday, but early, for sure.

Good morning TEAM!!! Ahh! What a morning, we got hit with a snow storm right at rush hour. It took me an hour and a half to get to work!!! My back is hurting from sitting so tense in the car and my legs are killing me from riding my brakes down I-75. But I'm here all in one piece. :)

Hey full marathoners--Guess what we'll be doing one month from today!! :faint:

Colleen--I have a huge family (4 sisters, 3 brothers-in-law, 7 nieces and nephews on my side; 3 sisters, 3 brothers-in-law, and 2 nephews on Stephen's side; plus parents and grandparents) and I have done all of my Christmas shopping on-line. I only have 2 more presents to buy and I haven't even set foot in a store. Thankfully every place I bought from had free shipping. :thumbsup2

Howard--Carrie really did say it best and I can't add anymore to her advice. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Amy--You can absolutely do the full marathon with only a long run of 16 miles. Don't worry, your Wish team will be there to carry you through!!

Where is Sunny????

Wendy--Great picture!!!! You look fabulous!

Heather--Good to see you again! How is your training going?

I better get off here, with getting to work so late, I have quite a mess on my desk. At least I'll be busy today! But I will be back, I can't stand the thought of you guys having fun without me!

Amy - You are going to do fine. Last year Craig had some really encouraging posts concernining sweeper times. Anyway, if you run 16 at your training pace (which you already know you can do) and then totally bonk, you will probably still have enough time built in that you will have plenty of time to finish w/o fear of being swept. Phil did a really hard hilly marathon w/ me last year (his first one) w/out much running training at all. He ran about 2-4 long runs total with the longest being 15 miles. He ran most of the marathon w/ me (20 miles) at about a 10:30-11:00 pace and then took off for the last 6 miles. He finished 12 minutes ahead of me and had a lot left over. I think it was b/c he ran most of it slower than his natural pace. You have an endurance base w/ all of your cross training. You can do it!!! Are you in the 5:00hr gp? If so, you'll have lots of encouragement there!!

Good morning RACING TEAM! Whooo hoo! That's what we are, aren't we??!?!?

Duh. Like THAT just sunk it. OK, can you tell I'm getting excited!?!?! :cool1:

This morning I did 55 min @ 3.8 @ 1%. While watching White Christmas. Gosh, I love that movie!

Anyway, now I have a question....

Tights, capris, or shorts???

This question is mostly for the ladies, but hey, if you guys intend to be sporting capris, I say - More power to you! :teeth:

I have been looking at pictures of past WDW races to see what everyone else has worn. It looks like mostly shorts. I'm bringing all three, because who knows. I would really much prefer to wear my Danskin black tights though. They are very very light weight and so comfortable. I guess we can't be sure, since who knows what the weather will be, but what do you think you'll wear? Or, what did you wear last year? On top I'll be wearing my WISH t-shirt.

Is anyone going to the parks after the Half? We are planning on going back to POR to rest and shower and then head over to MGM. We'll take it slow and easy - no commando touring! But I think walking the park slowly and easily will be good for me afterwards. During training I have been doing my LR early on Saturday morning then doing barn chores and housework the rest of the day. That will sort of be the same.

Lily - Thank you for your advice. Guess I worry too much. :goodvibes

Melissa - YAY for your $50! :thumbsup2

Oh Christa - That picture in "Behind The Scenes"! How adorable!! :goodvibes

Mel - YAY for your work out! But oh, I'm sorry to hear about your foot. :wizard:

Howard - Oh Howard, I have no advice. I'm so new to all this. But I'm sending you all the :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: I can find! (P.S. I know where there is someone VERY AMAZING close at hand that can inspire you. And she lives right in the same house as you!)

Any - You were posting at midnight!! Oh my goodness, girl! Don't you sleep???? :faint:

Jodi - Please. They can't tell my "Taper Tantrum Airheadedness" from my usual "My job is a total bore Airheadedness". And besides, right about now, WHO CARES?? We're doing a marathon!

Carrie - HA! :lmao: That's a good one. Howard draft off of me? HA HA HA HA! :rotfl2:

"Totally bonk?" That's great. I think of it as the bear, blown legs, stuff like that. I like your review of the moment when your legs refuse to listen to instructions from the brain.

Howard

I've just sent you an e-mail to your aol account with some ideas and some of my running log from the last 10 weeks before last year's Goofy. I got both races and all 3 medals with long runs never past 13 miles. I had a lot of 10 to 13's, but nothing longer. I know you can make it. The specifics are in the e-mail. Good luck.

Disclaimer: I do realize I will be NOWHERE NEAR Kevin at any time. He'll be WAY gone by the time I'm just getting warmed up.

You know, y'all better be careful what you wish for. I am many things and shy is generally not one of them. Just sayin'

And I promise you I'm really not that fast, honest. (Not like I'm Christa or anything.....)

To answer your questions about what to wear... I say bring it all and make a decision the night before. For the full, I wore shorts and was fine-- a little chilly in the corrals, but once we got going I felt fine. (I did buy and use one of those throwaway jackets they sell for $7 at the Expo... highly recommended)

Pat-- I'm in full-on germaphobic mode too. I work with college kids and every single one of them is sick right now. I will admit that part of me wishes I would just go ahead and get sick so I can get it over with and hopefully be OK for the races.

Krista-- The boys are good, if a little clingy lately with us working so much. Sadly, they might have to go into the "spa" on Tuesday if we win Sunday night and we have to travel. (Who am I kidding... they love it there.) I do think one of them has amnesia, though.... he gets completely confused by the first couple of snowfalls every year.

Howard-- My finals are finished on the 13th, so I guess I get a couple of extra days on you. :teeth: I am very much in the same boat as you.... working full time, in school full time and tryin to pull off Goofy. I'm pretty darned undertrained too. Honestly, I think we'll be fine. Your base is good and this isn't your first rodeo, so you know what to expect. You'll be just fine. BUT, I would try and take as much taper as you can... don't force out miles ten days before hand just to make up for lost time--- get your taper in and show up ready to go on the 6th. (My two cents, anyhow..)

Yesterday evening, I got outside and did 5K in 28:-something, 9:12/mile. It was really nice out, actually. Cold, but not breathtakingly so. Some ice on the roads but nothing too bad. Some flurries, but you couldn't call it snowing. Nice.

Today is a rest day before the Friday/Saturday back to back (for which the weather looks good.... THANK GOODNESS!!). Sunday will be 24 hours of living insanity-- so I might be incommunicado from Saturday evening until sometime Monday. There is a 50/50 shot I could be out of town next weekend, when I would do my final LLRs, in which case they get pushed to Monday/Tuesday.

Ok, I better try and get a little more studying done....

Had a good 5 miler this morning. I'm like most of the rest of ya'll in full eating mode right now. Don't put food near me if you expect it to be there when you return! :rotfl2: But now after Christa's post of how many calories we're burning, I deserve all of those cookies, right? ;)

Oh, and last night before DH went to work, I recalled my story of the TM shutting off on me to him. And what did he do--just laugh! I told him that I could have really hurt myself--but he goes "you didn't right?" Well, no--so he said that since I wasn't hurt he could laugh! I still don't think it's funny

Heather--thanks for the link on the shoes--like I need another pair of shoes, but DH gave me the go ahead, so I ordered them. I had a shoe discussion with my dad this past weekend, and he thinks I should scrap the Nike's anyway. He says the toe box is too small for me--so New Balance is wider--we'll see. If nothing else, I'll sport those Lime green shoes in support of my WISH buddies!

Time to hop in the shower! Hope everyone has a great day! And for those of you in the snow and cold--stay warm and safe. :sunny:

MelR, good for you getting your ressie straightened. Lucky for them it wasn’t the taper madness person with whom they spoke.

Dave, thanks for posting up The Penguin info for us stalkers.

Krista, Yay! For new shoes. Tee hee on newfies wearing zebra tights. Whoa on your “goat.” I’ve heard bad stories on what those pups might eat. Don’t let him outta your sight near rocks, bricks, ummmm or anywhere.

Christa, thanks for posting up those links. Good luck with the half and the $$$$. I’m cheap here and have been saving my $ cuz I know I will be spending for stuff in Jan.

Mel, good you could run those 2 miles, sorry about the foot problems still being a problem. Orthotics, would hope you could get things resolved way before the race. Seems like it’s gonna be a close call though.

Howard, I have some thoughts I’ll be sending your way. You do have good base and I know you will finish. There is no question. Good luck with the finals.

Craig, I love to read your posts. You are truly inspirational.

Amy, yup! You too, you will finish. You might need to be a bit slower, but you will get there.

Jodi, good luck with your therapist apt and the trainer. I’m sure you will make it race weekend. With all the hype you’ll be feeling you will amaze yourself as you fly through the events.

Kristi, good luck with your XT. Whoa! DS and DH would have loved to have gotten to see Petty like that. They would have known, not me.

Carrie, our posts “whacked?” Whadaya mean?

Hi Heather, like those shoes. None in my size though. Whew! I’m glad. I’m trying to keep my spending down so for the Jan event will have more $$$ then.

Wendy, the pics on tricharlotte are cool. How fun was that!

Kim, glad you’re sticking with us. You will be in this frenzy before you know it. It will be fun for you.

Cam, your 8 will be a cake walk this weekend. Take it easy and enjoy the steps. I think you need them to de-stress some.

Judy, bring it all and bring it in the carry on! (Traveling for events according to “The Penguin.”) That’s what I did last year. You can better decide the night before when you are preparing that way. For the half last year I wore tights. Wear what makes you happy.

Kevin, good luck with the finals. Not a shy guy? Ok then Mr. Par-tay!

Stephanie, yup! Cookies are deserved…Mmmm!

Suzy, wow! Those finals are late. Good luck with them. You will be enjoying your time off January for sure coming right from brain drain.

Lots of snow here. I did TM last night. I coud feel stiffness in the knee so just took it slow and stead for the required time and stretched lots. I’m wondering about this and if I’m going to have to really be back of the pack majorly over this. Oh well, whatever I am going to make it. I know! Had Christmas party last night and one tonight to the TM time is very needed these days. I look forward to 8 miles outside this weekend. I hope it can be so; I don’t want to TM.

Hi Everyone-

Well, I managed to run my 6 miles today. This was by far my toughest run mentally. It was WAY WAY harder than the 10 miles I ran yesterday. I had been warned that the next two weeks were going to be tough but this was brutal. Making it worse was that it was on a treadmill. Here is how it went:

2.4 miles: I am hating life and running. Everything from the hips down aches a little. I cut the TM to a WALK and drink some powerade. I decide I will just run 3 miles. I crank up the speed to get it over with.

3.2 miles: oops I got distracted by the news and forgot to stop at 3. Might as well run 4 and try to salvage my pace for the day. Spend next .6 miles trying to figure out how long it will take me to get to a 10 mpm pace.

3.8 miles: I have almost regained my 10 mpm pace so I will go to 5. Crank up the speed a little to regain my pace faster.

4.9 miles: My favorite song is about to come on. Who programed my MP3 player? I will keep going so I can listen....Crank up the speed so I can run to the beat.

By the way, the aches went away at about mile 4. Which fits in with exactly what I was told to expect. I ended up running the 6 in 58 minutes for a pace of 9:40. Not to shabby for someone who was ready to quit at mile 2.

Judy, I agree with our fellow WISHers, come prepared for all possibilities. According to our experienced folks last year was colder than usual. Here is exactly what I wore:

wicking socks, the brand I always use, worn before, but not alot
my lucky lime green underwear and sports bra
a long sleeved heavier weight black wicking shirt
my short sleeved WISH wicking shirt over the long sleeved shirt
long black wicking pants
a light-weight zippered sweatjacket with hood
a very, very heavy weight hoody, cut up the front to the neck (my throwaway)
a black stocking cap
lime green scarf - thanks Lily! :wave2:
two pairs light weight gloves
fanny pack containing my necessary stuff
my garmin
and last but not least, my favorite shoes

Remember that it was cold last year, I was in the Epcot parking lot at 3:20AM, and I walked (vs running). I took off the extra pair of gloves when we finally got started, and discarded the heavy hoody midway in the MK. I took off the light weight sweat jacket in Epcot so that my WISH shirt showed up nicely in my finish picture!!

As far as after the half....I went back to my room, did the cold tub soak, slept for an hour (mostly because I was up at 2AM) and then headed to the parks. I was out until after 11PM and felt fine.

We are going to have so much fun!! :Pinkbounc

Judy - The will have Tyvek tols and bottoms for ~$7 each at the expo. We did not go to teh expo 'til Saturday last year, so they were out of pants, but the jackets were great. I'd go heavier than flannel. K-mart had great after X-mas sales last year for zipped sweatshirts. BTW, I worry more about chafing than wedgies. Boy shorts are not rated fro distances greater than 10 miles IMO.

Uh Oh, Carrie. I was planning on just running in my Danskin tights and WISH shirt. Isn't that enough? Remember I will be coming from New York where I will be acclimated to freezing temps during the day. I was planning on the flannel shirt and sweats as the throw away. You mean I need something heavier than flannel to run in???
No, you should be fine for teh race, but just a flannel shirt on top may not be fine for standing in the corrals for over an hour. DH and I had been running in 20 degrees and awful wind and snow, but just standing around in 34 degrees got kind of chilly. Sweats were gone almost instantly. WIndbreaker got taken off at about mile 4. Down to shorts and t around mile 10. It was unseasonably cold, but you just never know.

Yes, thats good thinking. I think I'll get something windproof. And a hat. I bought a nice black watch cap (Ohhh! $1.99 at Target!) And wore it last Saturday. Then washed it because...well, because I blew my nose in it. And when it came out of the wash it was small enough for a Cabbage Patch Doll!

Oh you guys are good. You definately keep me laughing.
I am raking in all these layering tips for my 20 mile run on Saturday.
I don't have to have throw aways though, because I can hand them to a coach at one of our water stops. I don't have anything to wear over my tights though - what does everyone think of wearing my silk undies UNDER my tights? I will probably get too hot, huh?
We are supposed to have record breaking low temps here tonight and tomorrow. Probably average temperature for some of you, but I live in the SOUTH. Lucky for me, no more running until Saturday. :) :happytv: :) :surfweb:

Saturday it is predicted to be in about 20 when we start and in the high 30s three to four hours later. Brrr.

I ain't wearin lime green drawers! :)

I agree, Vic. Lime green undies make my hips look big. :thumbsup2

Now pink (or zebra print)--sign me right up! And forget the "outer layer" of shorts. I'll wear those bad boys with a running singlet and call it a day. Maybe some gloves, too. Don't want the hands to get chilly. :)

Cecelia - I'd go fro windbreaker pants if you've got 'em.

Krista - Whereas I think the seam in my tights would not be so comfy.

Idid not run today and feel guilty, but just needed a day for myself. I do feel well rested for the first time in weeks!

Hope everyone's runs are good this weekend. DH is out of town so we will run on Sunday not Saturday. I am glad it is a shorter run!

OMG!! You guys are cracking me up. :rotfl2: I wore 2 pair of pants last year the top ones were throw aways that I kept on until about mile 6-7. I wore my LS marathon shirt we got in the bag. It was stinkin cold! And I had been training in that weather but it was very cold to be haning around in. I also had a big fleece sweatshirt I wore at the start & then put in my gear bag. I also needed it for the end.

I'm going to bring clothes for all possibilities. January in Florida is never predictabe.

Talk about germs, I am subbing at an elementary school that has the stomach virus & strep running rampant!!! The kids & teachers are dropping like pukin' flies! (pretty picture huh?)

My training is barely there with all that's going on & my ankle still bothering me.

Off to basketball practice!

Continue with the underwear talk :teeth:

Last year, I wore running tights/pants of Howard's but the seam down the front of the legs irritated my legs with the friction in the cold. Over them, I wore a pair of sweatpants that were from my 65 pound heavier days. On the top, I think I wore the long sleeved race shirt and then my WISH shirt on top of that and 2 throwaway sweatshirts again many sizes too big. I peeled off the oversized sweatpants and one of the sweatshirts before the start and then the other sweatshirt within the first mile. I was wayyy too warm by the finish, so I am disinclined this year to wear a long sleeved tee as the bottom layer.
Oh, and I found a pair of wicking underwear on junonia before the 1/2 last year and have used them for events -- I "save" them for events because I haven't been able to find another pair since then.
My plan this year is panties, bike shorts, running skirt (with the shorts cut out of them) and throwaway sweat pants. Top will be jogging undergarment, WISH shirt, throwaway long sleeve tee, and one or two throwaway sweatshirts. An old blanket will go with me to the start, first for stretching on the ground and then to wrap myself and fellow WISHers in, if necessary.
Oh, and I was on the junonia website today and found really cute wigwam brand wicking socks in lime green! I LOVE this brand ever since I borrowed a pair of Howard's recently and how cool is is that they had lime green? :teeth:

Cam--Under Armor makes moisture wicking undies, you can get them at Dick's Sporting Goods or on-line. They even make moisture wicking thongs. :rolleyes1

I ain't wearin no thong! :lmao:

I do wear UA compression shorts under my running shorts. Wicks the sweat away and they're pretty comfy. They're also good for keeping things from juggling around, if you know what I mean. :teeth:

I'll bring along a little of everything and make a decision Friday night. :)
