Cam--Under Armor makes moisture wicking undies, you can get them at Dick's Sporting Goods or on-line. They even make moisture wicking thongs. :rolleyes1

Krista -- I am outrageously flattered that you think they'd make a size that would fit me.

I am with Anne -- :rotfl2: :lmao: :happytv: (this guy needs to be sitting in front of a computer!) :rotfl: pirate:  popcorn:: :rolleyes1

The undies are cracking me up!

I am getting some great tips on what to wear for my full. The cold didn't bother me for the half last year.

I figure it will be pretty warm by the end of my full, I plan on using every minute!

I did my 20 miler today, OMG what have I got myself into!!! I am actually feeling pretty good, funny thing is my butt hurts more than anything. I think I need some really tight tights to keep it from jiggling around.

Getting Goofy nervous!!

For those who asked what to wear at the start of the race, this is what people from south FL look like when it's 35 degrees outside at 4am.

http://www.asiorders.com/view_user_photo.asp?PID=&EVENTID=8161&PWD=&ID=20186053&FROM=browser&START=673&SHOW=48&CAT=83844&SUB=25450

And, since we're asking, commando all the way  I usually wear tights with shorts over them...don't need a third layer

My eyes!! My mind!!! Zebra butts, lime nose hairs, and commando..oh my!! We still have 4 weeks to go and we are barely hanging on..

All I can say is it's going to be an interesting WISH team photo this year :thumbsup2

As for keeping warm before the race: check out Target when they mark down the Christmas throw blankets. I bought a ton of them a couple years ago when the were marked down from $10 to $1! I still have a few, and they are Chad's (and now my) throw away blankets for keeping warm in the corrals.

If memory serves, I saw the blankets that cheap again last year too.

MickeySP - :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Yeah, my butt tends to hurt too. Must be that extra layer I wear. lol :teeth:

Anne - Thanks for asking about the gym. I actually made most of my faux pas (sp?) in my hotel gym in Houston last month, so I thought I'd be teh experienced one. ;) I've been power house cleanign the last 2 nigths, though and have not been cak. (yes, the house is that bad. ) WIll go back tomorrow.

Christa - Any decision on that half?

Vic - :rotfl:

Lily - The way we're heading, someone (or maybe everyone) will get banned by teh time taper madness really hits. ;) CAn you put in a good word with teh powers that be for us and get us off on temporary insanity? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

OK, DH and I deceided that we did nto have time for the gym last night. Plus my hip was really botehring me adn I knew that house cleaning and up and down the stairs would eb hardd enough w/o adding a work out. Excuses, I know, but I was hurting pretty bad after 2.5 hours of power cleaning, so I think it was the right choice. I don't know how it feels today as it's still frozen from icing on the way to work. If it's ok at the end of the day, I'll do 8 on teh TM tomorrow. If not, I'll do teh eliptical for 1.5 hours :scared:.

BTW, when did Vic's nose hairs go lime???? How'd I miss that?

Stranded in Philly on business (please don't get me started on US Air) working on 3 hours of sleep, but I had to comment on the underwear issue!!! :confused3

Commando for sure. :thumbsup2 I have never thought about wearing anything under spandex tights or running shorts with a built-in liner. I would feel like I was wearing a diaper or something.

I am so very jealous of all I have been missing around here due to vacation and business travel. I am doing a 20 miler tomorrow (if US Air can actually get me back home today) and promise to once again be a full-time WISH'er next week once my life is back to being relatively normal again.

I really have missed this thread and I hope you guys are doing wonderfully. I haven't even had time to skim posts or I would comment.

Best of luck to all in their training and LR's this weekend. :cheer2: :cool1:

TOO FUNNY!
I meant that wearing undies under running tights would seem to be very uncomfortable. B/C the tights are, well, tight.......so what is the reason for wearing them.....
Commando for sure. I have never thought about wearing anything under spandex tights or running shorts with a built-in liner. I would feel like I was wearing a diaper or something.
this says it best....

Good morning team!! Happy Friday!!! :cool1: Have I said lately how much I love you guys? Seriously, I do, and I love that we are training for this marathon together. I remember last year before the Wish dinner I felt indifferent about meeting, I was glad to meet, but if we didn't make it, it wouldn't be the end of the world. This year is totally different, I am so excited to meet every one on Friday, cheer on those doing the half on Saturday, run with those doing the full on Sunday, and celebrate with every one on Monday. The difference? I think we have a real connection this year, we're all friends. We can get on here and bring our problems and fears and somebody has the answer and every one is supportive and encouraging. We can share our victories and disappointments. And we all know we can laugh and have fun together. I am so glad I have my Wish Team!!

Okay, mushy time over! Who wants to hear my dingbat story? I think I see a hand, so here goes...you know how I hurt my IT band on Saturday and I have had IT band issues in the past, so I already had an ITBS band for my knee. On Tuesday, about 5-6 minutes into my run, I realized that I forgot to get my ITBS band out of our running drawer (we have a drawer in our dresser that hold all of our running junk--Garmins, mp3 players, chargers, Body Glide, etc), so I stopped the treadmill and went upstairs to get my band. There was only one band in there, so I grabbed it and put it on. I thought it felt funny, I didn't remember there being a metal plate in the band and it was tiny!! I'm a fairly small person, I weigh 115lbs, so my legs are small, but I could hardly get the band around my leg--it was so tight! I got back on the treadmill and ran a couple more minutes and had to stop because I knew something was not right with this band. Back upstairs I went and searched the drawer, but I couldn't find anything else, so I finished my 3.5 miles with this band pinched around my lower thigh. I got off the treadmill, took the band off and I had marks on my leg because the band was so tight, but my IT band didn't hurt, so I didn't really question it, I did show Stephen the mark on my leg, but I don't really think he was paying attention. Fast forward to yesterday and my 4 mile run (by the way it was a good run, ran slower again, ave 11:26 miles, but zero pain) with my "ITBS band", again it was super tight and I had to stop 2 or 3 times to take it off and let my leg get some relief from the tightness. I thought to myself, how can I run for 5+ hours with this band on my leg when it's cutting off my circulation after 45 minutes? After my run, I went upstairs to change my clothes and I laid my band on the dresser. Later in the evening when Stephen and I were getting ready for bed, Stephen picks up my ITBS band and asks why I was running with that. I said "it's my band for ITBS", well Stephen started rolling on the floor, laughing and said "that's not an ITBS band, that's a band for runners knee--it goes BELOW your knee!!! here's your ITBS band" and he proceeds to dig my band out of a gym bag. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: That's why the other band was so tight!! It's made for a smaller part of the leg!!! I was so happy to see my correct ITBS band--big and stretchy!!!!! I swear my hair is not blonde! (Sorry Heather and all of the other blondes out there!)

Dave--How 'bout them Stillers???? Why couldn't they have played like that all year?? I truly think Ben is 100% now and that's the difference.

Vic--You are a riot! Why didn't you find us sooner??

cheering on my fellow WISH team members :cheer2:
celebrating everyone's great training sessions
WISHing everyone pixiedust: and :goodvibes:
and
:lmao: :rotfl:

No training last night except hustling from office to home to boy scouts to grocery store to boy scouts to unloading groceries to cooking for 2 hours. Thank God I only have to do 8 miles tomorrow. :thumbsup2

Christmas decorating tonight and grocery shopping again for a dinner guests Sunday. Up very early tomorrow to get to the Y and then working all day, then cooking for Sunday, then hopefully cleaning the fully-decorated house.

I'm so behind... I have been reading when I get a chance, but kept waiting to post until I had enough time to respond. Oh well.

I haven't ran or done any exercise since my 19 miles on Saturday. DS has been sick with a stomach bug and cough and congestion. I got the stomach bug from him and haven't been able to do much of anything. He now has bronchitis. It's been a rough week.

Amy-- I have everything you mentioned plus more :sad2: My pain has been excrutiating this week. I can't stay in bed long enough to get a full night's rest. I can't get dressed in the morning or brush my teeth without gasping. But just like you, it doesn't hurt when I run. In fact, this week has been a good experiment to help settle in my mind that running is not causing the pain. Here's :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for you!

But I have to be honest and admit that I really don't feel like I am properly trained for Goofy. I've ditched the idea of doing the full many times over these past few days and then tell myself, "well it doesn't hurt to show up at the start line and just try..." then I tell myself, "but you won't just try, you'll push no matter how you feel and that could spell trouble", then I tell myself, "wow, you are insane with all these conversations rumbling around inside your head". UGH. I'm so upset with myself for not bouncing back by this point. I really thought I'd have made more improvement since the summer trauma. I have no confidence and it's zapping the joy out of everything.

But I must say, reading about lime green nose hairs, zebra butts, batman nipples and commando tights has helped lighten my mood. It's nly going to get wierder from here...

Good morning all. T.G.I.F! :dumbo:

Brr! Holy Moly! :cold: There was a 40 degree drop between yesterday morning and this morning!

Today was a XT day so I just did 30 min @ 3.8 @ 1% then took the stationary bike for a spin. I was really really tired this morning. I worked outside, hauling very heavy wheelbarrow loads of wet disgusting hay last night. I'm glad I got it done though because this morning it would have been frozen. I think that counts as XT. Weight lifting at least!

OK, without getting too intimate here...I can not go commando. I'm in the wrong age bracket for that. You ladies may know what I mean. You guys....butt out. No pun intended. Let me just say the Danskin tights I am wearing are I think made for dancing. They are very very light. Not that I am anything like a dancer, but I just like the way they feel.

Krista and Steve - OMG you guys! :rotfl:

Cam - You're wearing a skirt? Hmmm...I may be too underdressed for this occasion. I must admit I have NO intention of wearing any makeup! :teeth:

Oh Vic - You're a character! I can tell! :lmao:

Mel - Who takes that interesting WISH Team photo? Charlie and I won't be bringing our camera to the Half. Who is that in the picture? Man, I better get more clearance clothes!

Kristi - Yes! Excellent idea! :thumbsup2 I plan on hitting Target as soon as the sales start.

Krista - Oh Krista! Ha ha ha! :rotfl2:

Do you think we scared The Nip Man away?? :confused3

PSA: One thing I learned from all our Bird Flu prep around here was that when you wash your hands....sing Happy Birthday and scrub your hands with soap for as long as it takes to sing that. Then rinse thoroughly. That is the proper way to remove germs. However, I can't recommend singing out loud unless it actually is your birthday or the birthday of someone who happens to be in the bathroom with you at the time. :teeth:

Hi Everyone!

Its a REST day for me!!!

Dh read MelR's article on the Monster month and so he now refers to any strangeness from me as Monster madness. He is gonna see a bunch of it tomorrow when I get home from my 20 mile run in the Freezing cold! Its supposed to be in the teens tomorrow with a windchill in the single digits. I am contemplating going to the store for more layers. But that requires leaving my house and I am resting. Gees rest days are hard.

ALL my tights are loose at the top so I wear undies with them. I can not imagine wearing form fitting pants where people could see me. That might hurt someone.
When I wear those tight thigh grabbing things (what do you call them?) under shorts, I sweat too much and it starts to look um, well, um, like I wet my pants. I guess my thighs just like to snuggle.

Do you think we scared The Nip Man away?? :confused3 Ha, I'm here... although, I'm thinking DW really wouldn't be thrilled with the nipple-boy nickname. I'm lurking, but I've actually been pretty swamped at work this week.

Got my run in yesterday. 40 min on the treadmill at a 10 mpm pace. It felt pretty good. I had some soreness in my lower legs, but nothing too major. I actually think I'm getting stronger. I used to have to take a lot of Allieve when I got up in the morning and throughout the day, but I haven't been having to take it at all recently. And that's even with the 20 mile run last Saturday. This week I've alternated swogging and running, and my legs have been fine. I think it really helped that I flip-flopped the running and x-training days to give myself a full 48 hours from running the 20 miles and the next time I ran. My legs have been OK this week. I have a rest day today, and tomorrow I'm running a local 10k + I might do 2 miles to warmup so I get my full 8 in. I'm only going to do my LR pace though - 4R/1W. I don't want to hurt myself at this point by trying to race the 10k.

PD :wizard: :wizard: to all those hurting out there - Amy and Sunny come to mind in particular.

Krista- Yay Stillers!!! Not that I could see the game last night... rotten NFL Network. But I did have Willie Parker starting on my fantasy team :thumbsup2! Yeah, I'll take those 200+ yards and a TD in this playoff game for me. Yahoo!!! Plus, he got them against the dreaded Browns. I hate the Brownies... sorry Lily

OK, I really gotta work now.

 You know, Dave, you're right. I'm sorry about that. Blame the Taper. :blush:No, no, no apologies necessary. I didn't mean that as an admonishment. It was just a statement. No worries.

As far as the Commando discussion goes, let me say that I had been wearing some "running" undies/briefs under my shorts and tights, but I was getting some, ummm, errr, uncomfortable chafing issues. I will say those chafing issues went away when I stopped wearing the undies. I think they get too damp and don't dry out. I was always worried that the briefs in the running shorts wouldn't provide enough support, but I was wrong.

Plus, he got them against the dreaded Browns. I hate the Brownies... sorry LilyHey hey hey there. How 'bout them Browns! :rotfl2: So, what's there to hate these days. They show up and make most teams look good!
:confused3
So, I'm here thinking that taking the various forms of asprin might make me feel better. I have now added a back issue to my knee thingy.

Ok Dave, I guess maybe we need to find you another nickname huh? Hmmm must think on it some.

Cam, sorry about those time stealing issues you've got going on. Sheesh, you'd think work/home/Mom/Wife/holidays...would slow some. You're training! Do what you can. You'll make it.

Judy, I heard that about the birthday song. Now every time (lots) I gotta wash up I can't get that darn song out of my head. :rolleyes1

Thanks about the after holiday sales idea for warm blankies to toss. Great idea, I may have to seek out stuff for layering too. I'll wait til after holidays to check my stuff first. If not hoping our Goodwill or other stores should have something maybe.

Sunny, glad you checked in. Sorry you are so up and down over it all.

Sara, welcome back. I hope you'll get to join in more too.

Commando, now the saying "Boxers or Briefs" will never have the same meaning.

Good morning everyone!

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful TGIF.

I've been able to get in two 4 mile runs on the TM, Wednesday and Thursday, after work. Ankle is feeling pretty good. Still swells a little, but nothing we can't handle.

I have an 8 miler scheduled for Sunday. Not sure if it will be on the TM or outside. Depends on how much of a girly-man I am.

Glad to see most everyone is doing well with their training. Keep it up. :thumbsup2

For those hurting, good thoughts are enroute from Niceville. :)

Y'all take care. :wave2:

Judy , Dh is a KOOK (Keeper of Odd Knowledge) and came home with that bit of info..only his was to sing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". He'll be so glad to hear that it has spread to the boards, though! OF COURSE moving wet hay counts as cross training..DUH!! :goodvibes
Sunny , so glad you checked in. Do you think the cold weather and lack of sleep is contributing to the joint pain? We really do understand how frustrating all of this is for you. To go from a healthy runner to being in debilitating pain is mentally just as tough as physically. Your IC is still working, though! You come rant any time!! That's what team mates are for..the good, the bad, the ugly.
Carrie Hope once your hip thaws, it feels better!! Krista suggested Vic dye his nose hairs on page 16.
Cam and Howard , NO LADDERS as Steve says..when decorating the house.
Lily , That's one of my favorite WISH pictures!! :rotfl: We're changing your nickname from Dogcatcher to Fashion Model!!

We'll get to experience a cold start tomorrow for our six miler as North Florida will be in 30's by 10 am. We're supposed to hit 16 tonight!! :cold: Cecilia, bundle up for that run!

Hi Guys...OMG :rotfl2: the past few pages have been very very funny!

Carrie: Hope that hip feels better :grouphug: . I'm glad you're listening to your body and resting as needed!

Dave: Sounds like training is going well! Glad to hear you aren't in too much pain these days. Definitely a good sign!!!

Sunny: :grouphug: Your pain sounds awful. I feel bad complaining knowing all that you've been through. Unfortunately for me it hurts when I walk/run but it doesn't hurt when I'm not active. I guess that in the big scheme of things...I should be thankful for that! My doctors have told me no running until the pain is gone...b/c it is a nerve pain meaning there's compression there and I can do damage to it if I push through it (not that i have the capacity to do that anyway). But back to you....I really have been thinking about you often and hope that you are feeling much better when you read this!!!

Krista: :cheer2: :woohoo: Great job...so glad your knee is feeling better. I don't know how you managed to run with that tight band around your thigh!! OUCH!!!!!!!!

So for me....the pain is NOT as bad :). I have been doing pilates and yoga all week. I even did 30 minutes of cardio yesterday :teeth: . I think all the doctors/PT/etc have helped me :). I still can't run but walking is NOT painful!!! :woohoo:

I have no idea how you train and live your life with so much pain, you truly are a strong person. It's okay if you are not able to go Goofy this year, it's going to be there next year and the next and the next. Take care of yourself and do what you need to do. Even if you don't make it to the start line of the half or full, you are still a hero to me.

Dave,

I've been using the Adidas Erickson Baggy Dual Shorts for the last year. they have a built in compression liner = lots of support, and long enough to prevent chafing. The downside is they only have a small pocket built into the middle of the back, just below the waist. If I need to carry more than about 3 gels or sports beans, I strap on a small amphipod fanny pack.

We're getting ready to head out to WDW tonight for our annual Xmas weekend at VWL. One of the few times of the year when I'm glad it's cold...nothing like being in the WL at the fire when it's cold.

Have a good weekend!

:rotfl2: Sorry Kevin. Didn't want to bug you. I know how busy you've been! Hey, when's game time? (no, way to cold to want to watch in person, but I can have it on while we deck our halls.) Oh, please remeber. It was not I who started teh ZB comments. :rolleyes1

Sunny - I do not want you to hurt yourself. I can't imagine you gettign to WDW and being able to keep yourself from the Goofy. WHat if you hung back with the Just Want to Finish pace groups? Maybe hanging with WISHers would help you not want to push too hard and I'm sur they'd love the encouragement.

Mel - Have a great weekend!!!!

Did my LR of 10 miles on the TM this morning. I am a wimp and could not take the temp in the teens with a wind chill of 10....
I now have 2 heros:
1) Anyone who runs in any temp below 20
2) Anyone who can run on the TM for longer than 10 miles!
Did 10 in 1:25 with only H2O....AHHHHHHH!

Carrie- I'm glad I swallowed by the time that pic came up. As it was I was laughing so hard snot was coming out of my nose. (great visual , huh) I figure with all this comando talk, we aren't a dainty group  \

Krista- :grouphug: I feel the same way about all of you too!!!!!! Love the blonde moment story. And you not only did it once, but twice. That's something I would do. (and I have very dark hair, really, I do)

It was windchill of 3* here today. And yes that is farenheit. I live in AL for goodness sake NOT NORMAL! Granted I am pretty much at the TN state line but still in AL, still south of the Mason-Dixon line :confused3 It did warm up to a wind chill of 20 though. :sunny:

Cam-I'm there with you on the lack of training. Nothing since my 12 miler last Sunday. That's o.k. top athletes like us will be fine. No worries of sweeper buses for us :cheer2:

Sunny-good to hear from you. Please dont be so discouraged. You are doing what you can & it is way more than others in your situation would do. Most would have thrown in the towel & resigned to a life on the sofa. Not you, you rock girl! I agree with Cam , slow it down & you should be golden. I also agree with her in that you are an inspiration. You were one of the main ones that inspired me before my 1st half last year & here I am preparing (somewhat) for my 3rd half marathon in a year. Take it easy on yourself. Do what you can without hurting yourself! We love you whether you do goofy or just one of the races. Still more than 95% of people do.

Mel-once again, almost spit drink on the screen when reading about your homeless look.

Stay healthy everyone. We're in the home stretch now!

I hope this is ok to post, but I think I've seen others post things like this before, so here goes:

My Mom, Debby, is running the Disney Half Marathon through the AT Children's Project charity. A-T is short for ataxia-telangiectasia, a rare fatal genetic disease that attacks children, causing the combined symptoms of cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, immune deficiencies, muscular dystrophy and cancer. The A-T Children's Project is a public charity that raises funds to support and coordinate biomedical research aimed at finding a cure or life-improving therapies for A-T.

If any of you are so inclined, donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated. It's a fabulous organization. If I wasn't so concerned about meeting the minimum requirements, I would race for them each & every time. Being a part of their group at Disneyland this past September was wonderful! And to me, any children's charity is especially dear to my heart.

Here's my Mom's webpage for A-T. I know it says donations are due by Dec. 1st, but she upped the date a little on purpose. They can always accept donations.

Anyone else get this? Now I just have to decide if it's worth it to buy a "non refundable non transferable" entry given I'm active military and probably have a 50/50 chance of being deployed during that timeframe.

Thisplace cracks me up, I am so glad to be able to get back in the groove. My doubts are beginning to subside, I may just make my Goofy after all.I thought I would be so sore from my LR, but nothing. My butt is still sore but everything else feels just fine - YAHOO!!!

Anyone else doing the 5K on Friday @ MGM? I couldn't resist, but am gonna just walk it, well maybe run a small part.

Carrie - Yep, definitely need to take care of the jiggle. But that's ok, my BF likes to run behind me LOL

Krista - OMG!!! I fell on the floor. Moments like those are why I changed my blonde hair to brunette

Lily - Have you tried Tylenol 8 hour? I pop one before each 1/2 and one after works wonders.

Carrie - OMG!!!

Sunny - I hope you feel better. It would be hard to pass on the Goofy.

Colleen - Good Luck on the 1/2!!

Kristi - I am running for A-T myself. It is a great organization. Maybe I will see your Mom at the get togethers, tell her to look for the chubby chick who looks like she can't make a mile - never mind 39.3!

Matt - yep got it. Although being on Labor Day just stinks. I ran this with my DS last year and wanted to make this a family tradition, but Labor Day. Plus last year was on my birthday, it was fun runninf and having everyone yell Happy Birthday.

I got the email, too, but we are definitely not going to be doing that, especially since it is labor day. I am still fantasizing about doing the race for the taste, just to have something between the Minnie and the 2008 Marathon weekend.

Howard called me with GREAT news this morning -- after my call to Disney's Hilton Head resort last night, we got a call this morning saying that they found my Garmin. I am so relieved and thankful.

No workout this morning. Was up till almost 2 -- got the Christmas tree up and a lot of the other decorations, including my snowman collection. I think Andrew is going to work on lights on our bushes/shrubs today (we've never done that but he is very into it). Howard is done 2.5 final exams and studying for the other 1.5. I also got 5 sizes worth of clothes sorted and disseminated -- a box sent to a good friend; bags set aside for a friend who will visit over Christmas; tons to Goodwill yesterday (thanks, hon!) and 57 items to Dress for Success. So, the safety net is completely gone and I'd better get myself over to the 'working on weight loss during training" thread to keep on track -- otherwise I'll have nothing to wear!

Working today for about another 5 hours, then picking Jenn up on campus for a quick trip home, making 5 trays of lasagna for holiday dinners at our house and my office, and wrapping presents for our friends who are visiting tomorrow to celebrate Hannukah/Christmas with us.

Did I say "no workout" today? :teeth:

Hope everyone is enjoying their LRs today. Christa -- I know you wanted to do that half, but I'm glad you aren't out in that cold.

Braved the cold this am (for us southerner's it was cold--upper 20s) I thought I had dressed too warmly, but it worked out great. Ran 8 in 75:00 with the only other one of our group that showed up--what wimps! ;)

Just a quick question for those that might know--since I'm not doing the marathon this year, when do they open registration for 2008? Want to register early so I have that goal in the back of my head and don't slack off after my marathon in March.

Hope everyone had great runs this weekend! :sunny:

Good Afternoon Everyone-

Wow, what a beautiful day for a run. The sky was so blue. It was 18 degrees out when we started out. Lucky for me, my husband is an avid bike rider and he loaned me his balacava that covers his whole face. I wore 3 layers on top, loose tights on bottom and I was fine the entire run.

I never even had a sore muscle the whole time. I felt good from start to finish! A little tired at the end, but not too bad. I stuck with just powerade like I had planned and it was enough.

20 miles in 3 hours 21 minutes. Including some blistering hills.

Now all my really high mile runs are behind me - until the marathon that is!

I hope everyone else had good runs today!

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

OK, step back week for me this week. I was scheduled to run 8 miles in MfM, but I found a local 10K to run so I ran that. I ran 1 mile to warm up before the race (in 9:49 min), and then I ran the 10K - 6.27 miles/65:49 min (10:30 mpm). I took 1 min walk breaks at every mile point. Here's a picture of me finishing the race. I finished 203 out of 220 runners and DFL in my age group.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f135/dparfitt1/freezeroo1dbp.jpg

The weather was cold. It was 30 degrees at the 10:00am start. That wasn't so bad, but the bad thing was the wind. The wind was about 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. The last mile of the race was directly into the wind. It was difficult and cold.

So can I say something? This is going to seem extremely trivial, especially when so many of our team mates are dealing with such severe injuries and such. Anyway, here goes. I feel like I'm getting slower, not faster. In May I ran a 10K with 10:06 mpm, and in October I ran a half-marathon with 10:14 mpm. I know I took walk breaks in this race, but I think I had to. I don't think I could have ran the whole 10K without stopping. Now can someone assure me I'm getting into better shape? Is it just the cumulation of my training, the fact that I ran a 20 miler the week before that is taking a toll on my legs?

Yes, yes, & yes. At least that is what everyone keeps telling me. Several of our group were struggling yesterday and the coaches kept reminding us (from their nice warm cars) that it won't be this hard on race day. All the experience marathoners assured us that we would be faster on race day than we were yesterday. You are going to be fine. :)

Another week, another race report! Well actually I didn't race last week since I did that first ever 16 miler, and I won't be next week since I'll be doing the first ever 20 miler. But today my plan called for a sort of tune up race, it's been a step back week between those two hugely long runs, so it was to work more on speed.

The race was the Holiday Half Marathon in Point Clear, AL. It was by far the flattest half I have ever done, pancake flat down a highway next to the bay, right out onto this peninsula with the bay all around you and a great view, turnaround then hang a right up another road, turnaround and right back onto the main road back to the finish. There was also an 8k which my wife ran as she builds her long run back up in preparation for the half.

Weather was coooold, almost wore warmups for the race but decided against it, my legs warmed up fast enough as it was so shorts were fine. I did wear the "balaclava" (sp?) someone else mentioned that I normally wear snowboarding, minus the face mask I just tucked that into the top of the hat. Definitely kept my ears warm, and I wore gloves as well as my long sleeve DL half t-shirt.

Didn't really have any specific goals, was just hoping to still get sub 2 hours like a few weeks ago, and be somewhere around 9mpm. Went out much too fast as usual, and the last few miles I felt like I was REALLY fading, opposite of that previous race. There were only a few water stops and only 1 had gatorade, so that might have been part of the problem. Was pretty happy with my even splits for miles 2-8, and even though I was reeling coming in, I didn't lose as much time as I expected.

Mile splits: 8:26, 8:48, 8:52, 8:55, 8:51, 8:49, 8:48, 8:53, 9:02, 8:59, 9:08, 9:20, 9:16, 1:17 (garmin said 13.19)
Total: 1:57:30 PR! 8:54mpm avg

Beat my old time by about 1:20. Really sore today, but that's because afterward we went to an outlet mall and various other errands all day and I never got to ice bath. I think I ran so well because it was almost a non-running week, all I managed was a 3 miler on Tuesday after last Sat's 16, and then rested 3 straight days before the race. I was on the night flying schedule during that period, leaving around 11am and not coming home until between 2-3am and basically instantly falling asleep until it was time to go again, so fitting in running was pretty impossible.

This week is supposed to be 5, 3, R, 4, R, 20, but the highest I've gone in mileage so far is 26, so 32 seems like too much of a jump. Probably will shorten and/or skip Monday or skip Tuesday. I certainly wouldn't have been able to go much farther than I did yesterday at that pace, so sub 4 continues to be unreasonable, and my goal of 4:22 (10mpm pace) continues to seem realistic.

"Is it just the cumulation of my training, the fact that I ran a 20 miler the week before that is taking a toll on my legs?"

I would sat definitely. I took 1 day off after my LR and could barely manage 4 miles. It really took everything I had to get through it.

But it gave me a great idea of what I need to do for the Goofy. So next weekend, I am gonna try to LR back to back.

Now I need some advice. I keep getting a blister on the same toe. I never had this problem until the DL half, now it seems chronic. Any ideas on what to do?
I am afraid this will crop up in WDW.

Congrats to all of you getting your training runs in, and running races, this weekend.

It would have fit perfectly with my training schedule, but we were unsure whether we would be in town this weekend. I thought I might go and late register that morning, but when I saw the temperature.. :sad2: . I figure it might be cold at WDW, but no way was it going to be 20 degrees! I have to run & get ready now, I will try to catch up with you guys later. We are having a little gathering at my nephew Nate's gravesite this afternoon. Great job, Cecilia, Matt and Dave (and anyone else who was racing this week). :thumbsup2

I've had a crappy weekend. As careful as i've been trying to be, I've caught a cold! :sad2: I have congestion in my head and chest. Working out is not an option. I'm huffing and puffing just walking around the house. Hopefully, another day or two and it'll work it's way through my system.

Then yesterday, we had our family Christmas gathering. Since some family live about a 2 hour drive away (and didn't want to drive both ways on Christmas day) we decided to have an early get-together so the family could all see each other. It was going fine until about 1/2 way through the day when we had to take my Mom to the hospital. She thought she was having a heart attack! She spent the night in the hosp. and they ran several tests. They weren.t sure if it was a heart attack or possibly a blood clot that went to her lungs. Luckily, it was none of those things. Turned out to be a pulled/strained muscle in her chest. She was very relieved (as were we all).
It was a hectic weekend and I wasn't thrilled with spending hours in the hosp. (I kept thinking I'm already sick, I don't want to catch any more germs here!).

Hey guys! Guess what? Only two weeks till Christmas!! What? Christmas? What's that?? Ok, here's a better one--only 26 days till marathon weekend! :woohoo:

Terri--so glad everything worked out with your mom. What a scare!

Dave/Matt--great job on your races this weekend! Dave, I wouldn't worry about getting slower. As you build up mileage, that tends to happen, and it makes sense, really. The more long, slow runs you do, the more your body gets accustomed to the long, slow running. But hey, you're building distance right now, not speed, right? I've noticed that my pace has slowed slightly over the past two months, but I'm not too worried about it.

Vic--I thought I was the only one that was this late putting out Christmas decorations. I spent an hour and a half last night throwing (almost literally) lights on the bushes outside. Didn't want to be the only house on the street with no outside Christmas lights. Although some days, I just want to put a sign in the yard that says, "We're training for a marathon. Deal with it." :)

Sunny--good to hear from you again.

The weekend runs went well. It was a taper back, so I had 7 yesterday and 12 today. It felt good to give the legs a rest this week after last weeks high mileage. Only one more monster week left....

Krista said to tell everyone hi. She said she would post tonight, but she's up to her ears in cookie dough. She's baking all the cookies that she plans to bring to all of our family get-togethers over the next few weeks. I secretly think she's been eating half the cookie dough before she bakes the cookies, because when she takes the tray out of the oven, there are only like 3 or 4 cookies on it. :confused3 :rotfl2:

Hope everyone had a great weekend and to everyone nursing injuries and other high stress situations--get some rest. Talk to you all later.

Steve

As I promised Sunny awhile back, here are some pics of Chad's Christmas lights! It is very hard to take pics of lights. I never think they come out nearly as good as they look in person. The snowflakes on the roof are input into a bunch of animation controllers - so they flash, fade in & out, etc. randomly.
