We school both of our school aged boys at home through a virtual charter school in PA. DS9 is gifted and ADHD, DS5 is gifted and has SID/ social phobia. Neither of their needs are meet in a traditional classroom setting. We've had great success with both of them, although there are many, many trying times. They both have teacher with whom we check in regularly and she checks their work samples every month. They also receive all their material and lesson plans from the school at no charge. It's extremely flexible and allows students to work at their own pace, which is great for our boys. It also helps that my DH is also a behavioral specialist, I can always bounce ideas off him or ask his advice when bumps come up.
