DH just raided HD for paint cans for altering!
He purchased 6 gallons/ 10 quarts... so I get to decorate this weekend and next..
I watch several kids for about an hour afterschool.. so I thought I'd alter them each a qt. paint can and fill it with little goodies... I'm so excited!!
Than I'm decorating 3 for my kids and 2 for the teachers...and one for me! And the rest will be miscellaneous gifts... I can't wait!!! :)
I asked if he got any funny looks...and he said yes..but I thought maybe the 3 LGMH's may get my in trouble!!
He evidently had remember my discussion about LGMH's too! So, he took the last 3 they had! :rotfl2:

After thinking "Why would anyone ever want one!"...I ended up making 5 altered paintcans (or I will have 5 when I am done). My grandma is always hard, and half the time I hear, "the package was so pretty, I didn't want to open it" (I usually put a X-stitch ornament on it, or something) I figured an altered paint can would be perfect for her, because then she could keep the packaging! I got a gallon one, and filled it with random things, gift card, socks, dish towels. Then I got 4 quart ones...2 to hold stocking stuffers for my parents, and 2 for friends of the family, who are Disney fans too. These four will all have their favorite characters on the outside.

They are in the paint section, with the other supplies. I bought my quart cans at Ace Hardware because they were cheaper than HD and Lowes by half. But I also needed a gallon, and the ones at my Ace were ribbed on the sides, and I wanted smooth.
I did take a picture of my gallon one, but I haven't uploaded it yet, I will try to do so tomorrow. But if you search 2peas for paint cans, there are TONS.

Here are mine and what was in them. I made Ariel cans. :) I used paint chips for the albums inside.

They are cheapers at Home Depot by quarts 50 cents and by 1.25 on the gallons than Lowes.. I'll check Menards later this week..
I'll make a few more and take pictures this week... I have my Tink made but I'm not overly thrilled with it... I still have a bunch to make so I'm scraplifting the Ariel idea from Mickster!! Thanks Mickster!!! ;)

We just got back from HD. No paint cans for me, but Mickey heads! We took a bunch. My DS said that he needs them in Mickey colors so he can make a project. What it will be I don't know. My DD needed them in princess colors (Also for a mystery project). Not one person said anything to us or wondered why we also picked up alien green. ;)

I have one of Mickster's cans. The pictures are nice, but they don't do the can justice. It just so special in person. I even like it better than my own that I made.
So, what could your little angels be making with Mickey heads? Maybe little opposite albums with their faces in the bigger circle? You know sad/happy, scared/silly, looking up/looking down, mad/glad.

Oh ya I forgot. I saw in Walmart last week in the craft section, ribbon kinda like the one Mickster used. Only instead of circles hanging (which they had some in different colors of too) it had SEASHELLS!! How cool would that be? So I'm going to lift Mickster's ideas and change it just a little so I can still say it is mine. I think the shells were pink, so not quite the right color, but I'll make it work.
Mickster
12-04-2006, 10:12 AM
Believe it or not, but I have shells as well. I was going to use them, but with the circles, it was too much. Mine are on a turquoise ribbon, if you need them. I have enough to get around 6 cans, I think! :)
On to the other post, I don't know what the kids will come up with. I know I have to make a paper countdown chain for our Feb trip, so maybe something with that. Or journal boxes for DS's book (his own, not made by me...) I'll keep you posted. ;)

Ok, how does it look? I still have to add teachers name in black lollipop sizzix lettering...
Than fill it with goodies..but I need honest feed back.. how does it look?
This is a for a kindergarten teacher..but she loves teacher items for the classroom because of the young kids..
DS10's teacher is getting a winter themed one that I will work on later tonight.. my creative juices are flowing but the darn house is a mess and it must be cleaned.. :(
Look forward to hearing what you all think.. be honest...

Those are all sooooo cute. The teacher one is neat. I know someone who does the apple thing in her kitchen so minus the school daze ribbon that would be great for her. I may scraplift that for next year..This years gifts are almost already done. Neat idea.

You can buy the empty ones at the hardware stores.. the best price is Home Depot... 3.50 for a gallon; 2.00 for a quart...
Check twopeasinabucket.com search the gallery under paint cans.. that should help..
If you can't find them... let me know and I'll search for mine on the computer and send them to you..

Here are the quart cans I did for friends of the family who are Disney fans. One of them has a kitchen towel inside, the other is just getting some candy.
http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=28123&sort=2&cat=500&page=1
The Tinker Bell's are rubons, and the Jessica is a paper piecing.
To attach the paper, I just used photo stickers every couple of inches. However, the purple part on the Tink can was annoying. A 12" piece of paper doesn't quite go all the way around, so I covered the hole with purple cardstock. II think since the paper was heavier it didn't want to curve, so when I used the photo stickers the paper would pop off on one side. I ended up using a hot glue gun to do the sides, and it was fine. For the gallon and the other quart, I used lighter paper (the solid purple on the gallon can is from a Slab) and it was fine. Most of the instructions say use Mod Podge, but I didn't have any and I've seen where people have said that the paper can bubble if you use too much, and I didn't want to think about doing it wrong and having to redo.
Mickster
12-04-2006, 06:49 PM
That Jessica paper piecing is great! I love it!
I used the super sticky tape to hold my paper done. My kids used Mod Podge first and it was ok, but I didn't know how cardstock would be. I use that super sticky tape for everything! :rolleyes1

Now, I bought Pacer Basketball tickets for 12/30...so I think for DS6 I'm going to do a Pacer Paint can and put the tickets in there... The other kids know we are going to a Pacer game but he doesn't.. Actually we are going 12/30 and then on 12/31, SS and DS10 are playing at Conseco fieldhouse in a tournament and you have to have tickets for the 12/30 game or you can't get in.

Once I got my first one done, the rest didn't take long at all when I did them for the swap. My inside pieces took longer and they were no where near as great as some of the ones I got back.
I used the sticky red red tape - is it Art Accentz? Something like that, anyway it worked great on the thinner and thicker paper I used. The modge podge ones didn't look so good to me. Probably because I was using vellium and didn't smooth everything well enough. The glue dots worked well for the accent pieces.
So anyway, maybe 20-30 minutes at most for each can, less if you do them assembly line like.

Y'all have inspired me for a gift for my parents. We are kinda broke this year so lots of homemade stuff. My dad is getting a Hillbilly one with an outhouse on it so he can use it to keep his toiletries in. It will have mostly joke/gag gifts in it, like the famous hill billy bubble bath(beans in a bag with directions-cook, eat, wait one hour, take a bath :teeth: ) , bunches of stuff like that. I will do a teddybear one for my mom -at least on the outside, I may include a small teddy in it, but hers will have mostly gag stuff too like a do it yourself straw hat (bag of straw) OK my parents are weird and like bizarre things--my mother thinks gag gifts are cute. :confused3 Most cost will be buying the cans, I have almost everything else I need already.
Question...does anyone know of a good site that tells more instructions on making the cans -mainly the inside stuff? Thanks

hey are you using 2 sheets of paper for the gallon? If so the 1/2 inch circle punch from CM does the trick. Punch 1/2 way into the edge of the paper. The seams should line up 1/2 way around the hole for the handle. I'll take some pics of my cans tonight.

1 gallon empty paint can (try a local hardware store)
Paper 1 - 3 pieced of coordinating paper
adhesive tape
Embellishments as desired: stickers, buttons, ribbon, fibre, etc.
Step 1:
Instructions for Single patterned altered can: Cut two pieces of paper measuring 10 ½ “ long by 7 3/8 wide.
Instructions for decorating with two different patterned paper: Cut two pieces of paper approximately 10 ½ by 3 ½ and two pieces approximately 10 ½ by 4 ½”. You can play with the widths here, provided the end result is two sides measuring 10 ½ “ long by 7 3/8 wide. Where the papers overlap you can cover the seam with ribbon, tear, chalk, ink or leave as is.
Step 2:
Measure 1” from the top (length) of the paper and mark this location at each end of each piece of paper – this is the TOP of the hole. Use a circle punch, approx. 1” to cut out a half circle at the places marked. See diagram.

So I think I'm going to do this too. I usually give my coworkers gift cards and the quart size would be perfect to tuck them in with some candy. Now that my Christmas cards are officially mailed (Yay, me!) I have some time.
Why is the hardest part getting the barcode off the bottom? I tried Undu and made an even bigger mess. I think I'll end up covering the bottom too even though I didn't originally plan on it.
I'm going to try to do this without buying any new paper but I'm all out of 3 different kinds of adhesive so it'll be a challenge for me to go the store for those and skip the paper aisle. Do you think I can do it? ;)

Ugh about the barcodes.. My barcodes on the cans I have are on the can itself and imprinted on them...so they are easily covered.. (they were like stenciled on)..
Did you try soaking them w/ a washcloth?
I'm out of adhesive too.. I'll stop by on Sunday as we returned from basketball games! I refuse to go out tomorrow.. I want to finish my last few cans..and relax!! Next weekend DH and I are doing our shopping... Wish us luck!

I had coffee mugs made for Taly's teachers and want to wrap them in a can!
That sentence just made me laugh out loud! :lmao:
I failed at my task - I went to AC Moore and I *had* to go into the paper aisle, because I realized I had one person that will need a gallon can and I needed two pieces of paper for that and all the holiday papers I have at home are singles, but I only got 6 sheets of paper total! (3 times what I actually NEEDED but still very conservative for me.) ;)
I tried just about everything to get that paper barcode off. I bought extra cans so I'm just going to cover the barcode or leave it because who will look at the bottom anyway. We'll see how it goes. I think this Tuesday will be my "Paint Can Day."

How big is the bar code? Could you put an address label over it cover it? You could print out "Made by **** Christmas 2006" on the label. Or split it into two labels if you need to cover that much.
If you have a Disney freak on your list, put hidden Mickeys in the paper you use to cover the bottom.

Hmmm, I'm still not getting it...do you stick the paper to the paper (overlap) or do you butt the paper edges and stick the tape on the can...or is it both... OK so I'm being really slow, but I just can't get my mind around this thing...
I am however sending DH to the store for cans...LOL...I know I'll get these done...with everyones help...I will right guys? Please....ummm...guys....!!!! :teeth:

You do both.. I stick the double stick tape around the underneath rim piece of the can.. than I add my first paper... than, I do the next side and then the paper to paper on the overlap I added the tape to one side and adhered them..... mine didn't butt together.. My first measurements for the length for 10 3/4 inches.. but I bet there is still a small overlap at 10.5 inches...
Does that make sense... I'm a visual learner...

12-09-2006, 12:44 PM
Thanks Nancy. Yes, that was very clear.
I know what you mean about a visual learner. When I follow a pattern I always use the diagrams or the pics. My students are mostly using the word directions, and we always laugh as they are pointing to the "step" they are on, and I'm pointing at the diagram pic...makes for some fun classes though...
Thanks again, I think I get it now. I'll post pics when I get some done. One friend is a gardener, one is a butterfly lover who is very religious, one is a teddy bear lover, and DH fishes...I'm all set for ideas, just had no idea how to make it all stick right.
Thanks Buffy for the Altered can class with diagram. Very clear for us visual learners. And Love the idea of the "Made for you by____ " stickers AWM! You guys are the BEST!!! :teeth:

Thanks for the praise. Sometimes is it just so nice to be appreciated. Having an invisible mommy day here.
Anyway, I used the "Made by" labels for my cans because some of them have a "Modified by" label on them. I wanted to be sure I didn't credit for the cans I didn't make by myself. I had some great cans from the swap that I used for gift card holders. I just added a few details; ribbon here, tag there, sticker and rub-ons over there. I need to take a photo of the Chip'n'Dale can that I got from B&MB. I used some of the elements of rlovew's good'vs'evil swap on the can and it turned out so great. Like they were made for each other.
I also made a Tink can and a Marine can from scratch yesterday.
Need to figure out how to post pictures to show you all.

Went to price the cans today at Lowe's. GEEZ LOUISE! I was ready to ask if they were 24K gold underneath. They wanted $4.63- I think-for the gallon ones and $2.98 for the quart. UMMM no, I am so not paying that for an empty paint can. :sad2: I hit the True Value store nearby and what a differnce in price. $1.79 for the gallon and 99 cents for the quart. I got one of each so I can figure out the sizes for what I need. Plus True Value had tons of each and the key was free. Lowe's only had like 5 quart ones and wouldnt discount those that didnt have lids. :confused3 I think I will do the quart for my hillbilly one for my dad (the BF wants me to make one for his dad too) and the gallon for my mom so I can stuff a bigger Teddy in it to fill it up.

1. The key is a paint can opener. It is a carded thing, and Dh said they are around the paint cans, were hanging down on a hanger card display thing (this making any sense?). You could ask the paint mixer there I guess if you don't see them.
2. Buffy has a good class for the gallon can earlier in the thread. I'll have to make my own measurments for the quart ones, but the general rule it seems is to use 2 sheets, and overlap by at least 1/2"...that right guys?
3. The one for my friend that likes the bears will have a bag of kisses, and the tulip punch that she has been wanting and hasn't been able to find anywhere. I was able to score one on eBay. The gardening friend will have a gift card for lunch (with me of course :teeth: ) and some note cards with botanicals. My butterfly/religious friend will get the crystal cross that I'm making her, and a bag of kisses. And DH was going to get fishing lures in his, but, as stated before, he is now getting coal :rotfl2: Well, maybe I'll put a few lures in there and some tools in there too, since I already have them.
Anyway, that's what I'll be doing today and tomorrow :teeth:

When I made my quart ones, I used 1 sheet of 12 x 12 paper, cut down to almost fit in height. The 12 inches is a little short, so I used anohter sheet of cardstock as a "label" to fill the difference. I also used another piece of cardstock to fill in the top (about 1 inch). I then embellished the edges. I posted pictures of mine earlier in the thread. Ariel. Hope that helps. :)

12-10-2006, 12:33 PM
My quart cans are going to little ones... so I'm only sitting the lids on their cans..so they can just pull them off... I hadn't even thought about that.. Maybe you could tie them on a string... put the string 1/2 in the can.. close the lid, making sure the key is on the outside of the can (don't want a blonde moment realizing you put the key in the closed can) and than it's up to them what to do with the key when they open it!

I tried really thin ribbon, and the can closed. Think tape the ribbon inside, or use floral goop? not sure what will stick, the inside has a coating...

I put double sided tape on the inside of the can near the top and stuck the ribbon to it or you could attach the ribbon with tape to the inside of the lid.

I sent the gallon can to my Grandma, and she got it on Friday. She called me, and raved about the can, and where did I ever get such an idea. Then she called me again today because the rest of the family comes over for coffee klatch on Sundays, and they were all raving over the can. Apparently, my second cousin's husband is a manager at the Sherwin Williams and now he's having to get cans for everyone.
