We want to stay somewhere safe and nice but not with a huge price. Any suggestions?

We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Old Town. (I have their discount card. If you don't, you can join for free too.)
We also have stayed at the Best Western on Coronado Island.
And a third, a Super 8 on Rose Cran, that was cheap. We got what we paid for. (The plus -- there was a Starbuck's next door.)
Of these three, the Comfort Inn was nice and reasonably close to the zoo.
The only downside for us was I think they thought they were doing us a favor by giving us a bay view room. It was more of a soft industry view room over the main interstate. (Noisy) So no great room views there, but the rate was reasonable and the room was newly remodeled and clean, and easy access to the main highway.
There are nicer hotels down the street that are higher priced but more for the tourist staying directly there.
If you belong to AAA, you should pick up one of their guide books. I have one on hand if you want me to look up anything.
The Zoo is in Balboa Park, and I don't recall seeing any chains directly in that area.

The zoo itself, while in a beautiful park, is not in the best part of town. I would suggest either the old-town area or the hotel circle area for easy access to the zoo, while still being in a safe area.

We are going in Sept. 29 and have booked a room at the Best Western Seven Seas. It looks OK. It looks close to everything. We got a king bed for two nights, and tickets to the San Diago Zoo and Sea World for two days in the package, plus breakfast both days for $350. Check out the picture on their web site.

Thanks for the info. We know absolutely nothing about anywhere in California. Knowing what areas to look in are a big help. We just figured the closer to the park the better. I guess that isn't always the case. I had noticed some of the motels that had addresses on Hotel Circle. I will look at those.
Luv2Roam--- how do you get their discount card? Can you just ask for it?
JMM7171---was that for 2 people?
Thanks a bunch.

It was 5 minutes from Sea World, and not too far from the zoo, either. They offered breakfast, too. We had a mini suite for six of us, and I was very pleased with it.

MaryJo - Was that Comfort Inn just down the street from Old Town? If it was, that's where we stayed too!

thinkerbell - I got my Comfort Inn discount just by signing up with them. It's called the Guest Privileges program.
I also belong to the same type of program with Super 8 and Holiday Inn.
To be honest, I forget what the privileges are now! I probably just used my AAA card anyway.
The web address is:

There are many hotels on Hotel Circle. It's just an access road of hotel, after hotel, after hotel......
I did like the ease of getting in and out of Comfort Inn. It seemed that we were at the zoo in no time -- maybe ten minutes

The more I recall, I did use my AAA card for a discount. I signed up with the Priv Club because we stayed at nothing but CI last CA visit. And I figured I might as well get something out of it in the long run.

Yes, That was for two people and it is on Hotel Circle. It's very close to Sea World and the Zoo. Check it out by using yahoo and entering Best Western Seven Seas, it will give you the web site.
