Incase you're wondering, Disney filed papers for demolition at the Contemporary resort.

It is a standard Notice of Commencement and it states "general demolition work". I think anything on a large scale would not be referred to as "general".

The property address on the document is 4620 N. World Drive.
The address of the main building of Disney's Contemporary Resort is 4600 N. World Drive. So the property at 4620 N. World Drive is probably the north garden wing — which is the property that's currently out of service and fenced off.
The document refers to "Abatement and General Demolition Work."
"Abatement" is likely to refer to asbestos abatement. The Contemporary Resort was built at a time when asbestos was still widely used in spray-applied flame retardant. As long as the asbestos is left undisturbed, it's not generally considered to be a problem. For simple cosmetic updates (new carpet, wallpaper, bathroom fixtures, paint, and furniture), asbestos abatement would not be needed. But if the existing structure will demolished, and if it contains asbestos, then the building will require costly, time-consuming asbestos abatement before it can be demolished. To get to the asbestos, internal "general demolition" (to remove ceilings and walls) would be required. Complete demolition would only be possible after the asbestos is removed.
So, my reading of the document is that it's for the asbestos removal work that would be a prerequisite for complete demolition — but I could be wrong.
Until there's an official announcement, we can only guess what will happen to the north garden wing of the Contemporary. However, the evidence is mounting that it will be demolished to become the site of the next on-site DVC resort after the Animal Kingdom Villas.

And the document filed for the South Garden Wing did not use this terminology. It refered to refurbishment and upgrades.

In addition, there was some speculation that in order to grandfather in portions of the building in terms of wetlands protection issues and such, that they would be preserving at least some portion of the existing footprint.

We were in Disney in Feb. and rented a few boats out of the Contemporary to watch the fireworks. We were told by the 2 drivers of our boats that they are planning a waterpark for DVC members! :woohoo:

CM's are still being told that the North Wing is going to be refubished.
An extensive rehab sounds plausable but maybe that info is a red herring because they want to buy some time before they make an official announcement.
There is a lot of evidence out there that more is happening at the CR than a rehab --even more than a roof repacement.
I am still hoping for a DVC!
Time will tell.

mousermerf Could you please post some of the photos of the work on the CR North Wing that you posted on the other forum?
I am sure a lot of DIS'ners would be interested in seeing them.
Thanks!

The original rumors of the DVC Resort included a fairly extensive water area. That's what this means, but ny the time it got to those two it morphed into a "water park for DVC members". Funny how that happens, don't you think?

Yea, "we don't know nuthin' " until they finally announce their intentions. Rumors, as always, will abound, and as has been stated many times before on these very boards, we really do not know what is going on until the big cheese speaks.

Of course if we actually saw the North Wing come down that would indicate something new will go back up.
(It might not be 15 stories tall or even a DVC but I think they would replace it with something new.)

I noticed yesterday a construction fence around the parking lot and a guard shack at the entrance. Couldn't really see anything at the North wing other than a pile of empty pallots by the entrance.

Well, we will be going in a week and a half for our yearly Christmas visit. We make the rounds of all the resorts to check out their decorations and gingerbread buildings, so I think I'll throttle some CMs :teeth:{yes, it's a joke!} to see if I can get them to spill some of the beans on what's going on over at the CR.

You said you got back on the 19th. Was that in November? Was there much in the way of Christmas decorations that were lit up when you were there? How about the Osborne lights, were they on yet?

Well, as a couple of former New Jerseyans, we would love to have you guys along, but we already have a full {DVC resort} house this trip, so maybe next year. And we will probably PM you with a few more questions before we go....Thanks! :)

…Work on the Contemporary Resort's North Garden Wing appears at this time to be asbestos abatement in preparation for demolition in the near future. Rooms numbers for accommodations in the wing have been removed from the reservations system. We'll keep an eye on it to see what happens.

We were there from Nov. 4th - Nov. 11th. Walt Disney World had a lot of Christmas decorations up, trees, lights, garland, etc. They also had the Osborne Spectacle of Lights up. While we were at Disney MGM Studios, they had a preview of them. It was totally awesome. My Husband & I had seen them before but my Parents had not. It was really cool being with my Parents and seeing them. They all came on. After the initial cheering and clapping, we heard alot of ahhhhh, oooohh, wow, etc. It was a magical moment in a magical place. :wave2:
