Good morning, everyone.
Should I be worried that my daughter really, really likes shoes?
That is, she is 14 months old, and she likes to eat them.

LOL, my 8 year old LOVES shoes.. always has. Even now, whenever we go into a store that sells shoes, I get, "Mom, can we please go look at the shoes!" She is a true girl! ;)
You, my friend, are doomed! :rotfl:

You had better start a shoe fund!! My poor DH does not even ask anymore about how much my shoes cost, he just knows it is the price he must pay to be married to me!! ::yes::

She tends to snack and nibble. She doesn't have access to expensive shoes in this household; I wonder if she will have expensive tastes? Could bring her to my sister's, where she could try some Pradas, but I think my sister would be annoyed at the tooth marks.
Oh besides shoes, she likes coconut-scented Doh-Doh island Play-Doh, especially hot pink.
What a connoisseur I am raising!

Prada is nice, but, personally, I like a nice Steve Madden.

for some real randomness here is the math on the great pyramids:
The Great Pyramid of Khufu from the Fourth Dynasty was a mathematical wonder:
It was laid out with geometric precision - a near-perfect square base, with sides of 230 meters that differ from each other by less than twenty centimeters, and faces that sloped upwards at an angle of 51º to reach an apex nearly 150 meters above the desert floor.
There are about 2,300,000 giant, heavy stone blocks in the pyramid, which are placed so close together that a knife blade can not be inserted between them! The sides of the square base have an error of less than 1/14,000, while the right angles have an error of less than 1/27,000.
Some people have made certain discoveries about the Great Pyramid, using maths:
When using the Egyptian cubit the perimeter is 365.24 - the amount of days in the year
When doubling the perimeter, the answer is equal to one minute of one degree at the equator
The apex to base slant is equal to 600th of a degree of latitude
The height x 10 to the power of 9 gives approximately the distance from the earth to the sun
The perimeter divided by 2 x the height of the pyramid is equal to pi - 3.1416
The weight of the pyramid x 10 to the power of 15 is equal to the approximate weight of the earth
When the cross diagonals of the base are added together, the answer is equal to the amount of time (in years) that it takes for the earth's polar axis to go back to its original starting point - 25,286.6 years
The measurements of the King's Chamber gives 2-5-3 and 3-4-5 which are basic Pythagorean triangles

OK, I just booked the hotel for our first annual "Back to Skool" trip to return to college for Homecoming.
I know skool is spelled wrong, but my friends think it's funny since we are all educators.
I should get some zazzle t-shirts or something!

The Dangers of Dr. Seuss
I was introducing DD3yo to the wonders of Dr. Seuss and rhyming, and was very proud when she started rhyming her own (mostly nonsense) words.
DD: "Daddy, I can rhyme! Rocket, locket, pocket, mocket, docket..."
Me: "Very good! That's great!!!"
DD: "Daddy, I can rhyme more! Luck, duck, muck, puck, buck..."
Me: "OK, let's play a different game now."

Random Lesson Learned: Mom's are not ALWAYS right....it's true
So, your mom is always the person that has the right answer....the person with the experience and know how to get you through something right?! Well tonight, my mom calls me and tells me she fell and hurt her foot and thinks it might be hurt pretty good. I go over there, and her toes are all swollen and it looks like she probably broke it. (No, not a medical doctor, I've just had four broken legs....I know broken LOL) Now, what does she want to do? Wrap it with an ace bandage with ice on it! She doesn't have health insurance started yet (she owns her own business) so she won't go to the hospital! GRRR...So, after some dinner I left her with some pain medication, elevated her foot and iced her up (and told her: 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off). I feel like the mother here. That, coupled with an email home from DS6 teacher (he sometimes doesn't re-tuck in shirt, what nonsense!) and DH being on an overnight trip for computer installation and I am at my whits end....anyone want chocolate ice cream???

I'm like totally stoked right now. I just got word from the Technical Theater director that I may have a new part-time job lined up...being a Student Conductor/Assistant to the Conductor for our local professional symphony! It's not set in stone yet (I still have to meet with the guy I'm working with), but the job may include conducting the symphony for rehearsal.
Oh my gosh...I think right now would be a good time for the "hand fluttering" and the "leik omgs!" It's the best way to express how I'm feeling.

lol BubbasFriend I was gonna say the same thing...I think it is funny though ;) So where are you all going?? :wizard: Hope you have a great trip!
DisneyFreak- I hate saying that...cant I just call you Princess??? Miss talking with you, hope you are on tonight when I get home from work. I am in need of minute cake!!!
Tishke my dear- Mom's are SO stubborn! I know you are over there today taking care of her...please try and convince her to get to the hospital. And make sure you give DH an extra big hug because I am sure he is tired from his long night :)
Fly- Dude that freakin' rocks!!! Congrats! You are so passionate about your music and that makes you a wonderful person. Music is important in life (my opinion). I pray that it all works out for you!
And on a sidenote...there is NOTHING worse than counting down the final days before your big vacation. Every trip to WDW I get really excited...well this time is 10 times more-so and we aren't even going to WDW...it is time for VEGAS! Maybe it is because DH and I have never been, but the anticipation is killing me! My mind is far from work and I am a walking zombie with the customers when I am there. Actually, I probably seem like a kid on crack or something because I am hyper all the time (more so than normal). So I have been doing busy work like sizing out clearance (yay for me :rolleyes1 ) and making sure my denim folds are perfect (yay for me again). So yeah...are we there yet????
Disneyfreak92
09-20-2005, 12:19 PM
Of course you can call me Princess. :) Disneyfreak92 is a username I have been using for years, and VMK wouldn't let me have it. But now I am glad because PrincessLynda is much more flattering. :rotfl:
And yes, mothers can be stubborn! A few months ago, my mother thought she had a tiny piece of shrimp caught in her throat. When she called the patient advisory nurse, she was told not to drive herself to the ER, so she drove to our house (20 minutes from hers) so that DH and I could take her to the ER near us because she had more faith in that ER than she did in the one hear her. Turns out there was nothing in her throat by the way, but DH teases her about it every chance he gets. :rotfl:

Yeah, I know...it drives me nuts, too, but I thought the school color rule would override the correctness of the grammar. LOL!
We are going back to Illinois State University at Bloomington-Normal. It's smack dab in the middle of IL. I'm soooooo excited! I think this will be my first time back since graduation three years ago. We've already got our plan in place to visit all the old hangouts! :teeth:
Oh, I forgot to mention...I think we might make inaugural t-shirts with "Back to Skool" on them. This is so my sense of humor, as most of us going back are educators...I think it would be pretty funny for us to wear these shirts! LOL!

Random Roll Your Eyes News: Schools are canceled here on Monday and Tuesday to help conserve power and gas due to Rita (I'm in GA). Umm...Okay, what rocket scientist came up with this idea?? Now parents have to find a place for their kids to go all day, since if school is closed, so are school run programs like after school. (Thank goodness I am no longer working!) So, two days extra with DS home....I would say I would take him downtown for a while to the big park in the city, but then I really wouldn't be conserving gas, now would I? Corpse Bride on Monday here we come

Wow! We're heading off to WDW in a week and a half or so, and just for the heck of it, DW has been calling the dining reservations sporadically, and...
...can you believe that we got Cinderella Royal Table for a princess lunch for 12 days from now?
We didn't really intend to do it (which is why we didn't try it at 90 or 90+10), but then thought it'd be kind of fun. We've never been to one before, and DD3yo has a small collection of princess dresses, which I guess we need to bring in now. Beast Princesses!

Wow, Monster Trucks? I... don't think, for some reason, it ever occurred to me that you might be a monster truck / demolition derby kinda person. Woot for you!
OK, in my continuing attempt to bore the heck out of everybody, DD3yo seems to have developed a bizarre phobia. The other night at bedtime, she announced that she was scared and didn't want to sleep. When asked what she was scared of, it became apparent that she was afraid of the number 8.
Huh?!? Yes, on our digital alarm clock, it was just after 8pm. What was so terrifying, so sinister, about the number 8? It made her think of dragons. I was required to cover the alarm clock with a tissue before she was willing to go to sleep.
This can't be normal. Octodracophobia? Maybe I can write it up and publish it in a psychobabble journal?
In other news, DD14mo is regularly enjoying toddling up and attempting to take a bite out of me. Grrrrr.... Can I have her de-fanged?

Not sure if this is too risque, but it is completely random:
Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent's house to visit her 95-year-old grandmother and comfort her. When she asked how her grandfather had died, her grandmother replied, he had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning." Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that two people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble. "Oh no, my dear," replied granny. "Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to do it was when the church bells would start to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too strenuous. Simply in on the Ding and out on the Dong." She paused to wipe away a tear, and continued, "He'd still be alive if the ice cream truck hadn't come along."
Ok, Give me a minute while I calm myself down from laughing so hard. LOL After reading the post by JeanJoe and then this one I seem to be having a difficult time to stop laughing! LOL. Of course my favorite thing to do is laugh!! rofl :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Here is something I got that I thought was funny:
What ever happened to those Disney Characters? LOL
MICKEY MOUSE - died of venereal disease after visiting multiple prostitutes because Minnie said "No" for 50 years.
DONALD DUCK - served as a main course at Epcot's China Pavilion.
PLUTO - caught by dogcatchers, put to sleep after he was never claimed.
GOOFY - assassinated during first term as President of the United States.
SCROOGE MCDUCK - died in extreme poverty after being audited by the IRS.
HUEY, DEWEY & LOUIE - involved in an underground child pornography ring.
SNOW WHITE - fell for the "apple trick" again.
DOPEY - 'nuff said.
SNEEZY - died of pneumonia with Jim Henson.
GRUMPY - executed after gunning down 15 people in a local McDonalds.
HAPPY - killed by insane gunman at a local McDonalds.

While we're on the topic of rather twisted things, who else would rather jump off a cliff than play Yet Another Round of Candyland with their kids? While lamenting this sad state of affairs, I came across a new game from a company called Smirk and Dagger Games (whose tagline is "A lot more fun when you can stab a friend in the back).
They have a game called Run for your life, Candyman! (http://www.smirkanddagger.com/candyman.htm).
http://www.smirkanddagger.com/img_candy/CMbox.gif
How can you not like a game, with packaging blurbs like:
Brutal and chaotic. Mean-spirited and a whole lot of fun. In an effort to escape the land, things get ugly. ... And so, this is a no-holds-barred gingerbread smackdown.
...
To help you along the way, you will be earning 'Special Treat' cards, special attacks and defenses like, "Candy Caning" (two shots to each leg), "Ginger Snap" (tear off a damaged arm and smack 'em with it) or equiping yourself with a ranged weapon like "Licorice Whip".
What do you all think? Good game for my 3 year old, to replace Candyland?

I would like to tell you about something that happened to me yesterday. Well, my dad and I were going to an Orioles game and we decided to stop at a game store. You will never believe what happened next. Just before we walked in, some teenage guy tried to steal an old lady's purse, and so the lady stabbed him in the hand with her car keys and he ran away. But he was with two girls and a guy [small gang!] and so my dad called them over to stand where he was so he could keep an eye on them. They came over and stood there, but when when my dad started asking questions, they got scared and one of the girls said, " I'm out of here" and ran away. :sad2:
While we were watching the girl, the guy that was left started running too...[go figure] :confused3 . Anyway, my dad tried to catch that guy, but he was too fast [the kid, not my dad... he is old :ssst: ]. If I would have opened the door, he would have crashed into it...that's how close he was..lol. Anyway, we did not catch him, but we did catch one of the girls who was in the gang. So the police came and started questioning her. She claimed she had no idea who they were... yeah right...I don't go up to people and just start beating up old ladies with them...lol.
Well, the police put her in the back of the police car so..it was nuts: helecopters everywere, police officers everywere questioning everyone about what happened. I don't think they found the guy but the girl might tell if she gets scared bad enough. Well anyway, we got to the game on time and we won the game :cheer2: :cheer2:, and that's the end of my day...long day I should say lol.
BTW, they did not make off with the old lady's purse, so it was a happy ending.

Oh... I did something like this when I was in college -- chased somebody who stole stuff from labs. I didn't catch them, either, but was able to give a pretty good description.
But afterwards, it was pointed out to me that this really isn't such a good idea. A fleeing criminal will not do any (immediate) harm. But, a cornered guy might decide it's easier just to turn around and, say, shoot you.
I think in this sort of situation, it might be better to let them go, rather than risk a tragedy. Still, I'm glad it all turned out well.

LEIK OMG!! OMG!! OMG!! I GOT IT!!!
OK...so I finish up my hour of practice time and walk back into the Recording Studio for my "Computers in Music Class." And as I walk in, my teacher is talking to the guy who was looking for that student conductor...apparently to put in some good words for me and talking it up with him, and he hands the phone to me...
...because I got the job!!! I'm going to be the guy's right hand man during the rehearsals and performances of the local ballet's production of The Nutcracker, which involves our local professional symphony's musicians. So I start private conducting/score-reading lessons with him next week...and by the rehearsals he said he'll have me run through the overture among other things with the orchestra. And if he has to run and resolve a conflict, I'll be his guy to pick up the baton.
:cool1:OMG OMG...I'm even more excited than I was before. Watch me do a happy dance!!:cool1:

We went to the Flames preseason home opener last week. We brought our boy to his first hockey game. (Well he went to a playoff game before he was born, but that doesn't really count)

Heading off to WDW in about 30 minutes until the end of the week, with the Beasts in tow.
I'll be sure to find a bench on Main Street, get some popcorn (since the real world seems to have people more effective at keeping their carts in working order), and try not to do too many of things Surferrat mentioned in his thread. (I keep on clicking my Beast's ignore button, but I can STILL hear her whining! Can I boot her?)

Hit it, Jamie!
**drum beat followed by bagpipe introduction, rest of band follows**
In the year of our lord 1806, we set sail from the fair cove of Cork.
We were bound far away with a cargo of bricks to the fine City Hall of New York.
And our very fine craft, she was rigged fore and aft,
And oh how the wild wind drove her.
She had twenty three masts and withstood several blasts
And we called her The Irish Rover.
**small piano instrumental**
There was Barney McGee from the banks of Dundee, there was Hogan from County Tyrone
And a chap called McGurk who was scared stiff of work and a man from Westmeath called Malone.
There was Slugger O’Toole who was drunk as a rule and Fighting Bill Treacy from Dover.
And your man, Mike McCann from the banks of the Bann was the skipper of the Irish Rover.
**small electric guitar instrumental**
We had one million bales of old billygoat tails we had two million buckets of stone.
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides, we had four million packets of bones
We had five million hogs, six million dogs, seven million barrels of porter.
We had eight million bags of the best Sligo rags in the hold of the Irish Rover.
**bagpipe leads the solo!**
We had sailed seven years when the measles broke out, and the ship lost her way in the fog.
And the whole of the crew was reduced unto two, ‘twas meself and the Captain’s old dog.
Then the ship struck a rock – terrible shock. And then she heeled right over
Turned nine times around and the poor old dog was drowned…
(Houston, we have a problem.)
I’m the last of the Irish Rovers.
**wraps it up**
Yeah.

Beware -- don't read. Boredom ahead
After getting back last night from an Oct 2-7 WDW trip, I'm slipping into withdrawal, so I thought I'd cheer myself up by writing some random notes about the recent trip DW, the Beasts (DD3yo aka Grumpy and DD14mo aka Beast), and I just had. It'll be boring -- you probably don't want to read this. This is just my personal withdrawal therapy.
This was a trip of firsts: our first trip back since joining DVC, and our first trip without the Beast's grandparents (aka, Beast-tamers) to help out. So, it was with anticipation, excitement, fear, trepidation, and knowledge of certain Horrors to Come that we set out. The plan was for a low-key visit, not trying to hit all the parks, not even trying to do full days.
The Boardwalk Villas -- OMG
We stayed in a 1BR at the Boardwalk Villas. Wow. Never stayed in a villa room before, and it was incredible -- now we can never, ever go back to staying in a regular room. Had a master bedroom with an adjacent room with whirlpool tub, a separate adjacent bathroom, full kitchen, living room with pull-out sofabed, 2 TV's, video/dvd player, sitting areas, walk-in closet, etc. We put a pack-n-play into the walk-in closet, where the toddler could sleep (the Beast Pen), the very sight of which at bed or naptime, would convert a quietly demonic Beast into a screaming Beast of Fury.
Location was AWESOME. From the Boardwalk, we could walk easily to MGM or to Epcot. After hearing so much about the Endless Hallways of the Boardwalk Villas, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were only ~175 step from the central area of the boardwalk (room 1119). Not a death march at all -- only a short toddler marathon. The great thing was that we were on the 1st floor (great with strollers) and directly across an exit leading to a quiet pool and the Community Hall. These became daily habits -- a quick swim and trip to Community Hall, where DD3yo colored, painted, strung necklaces, made a colored-sand genie bottle / a tissue paper Stitch mosaic. We would also rent a dvd or two every day (kids get up at 5am, so between then and park opening, it was a life-saver). DW and I invented a new game called Beast-handicapped air hockey, where we would attempt to play air hockey, each with a kid in one arm. It's difficult to play air hockey properly when a toddler is trying to take a bite out of you, or the pre-schooler is trying to jump onto the table.
On the first floor, of course, anyone walking by could peek in and watch us being overrun by the kids, but really, I think I saw more ducks and herons than people. Off the patio, we had a great view of the front of the Boardwalk Inn, and could see the higher Illuminations fireworks every night.
Who cares if it's hot, humid, and raining, if you are at WDW
One thing I didn't realize was how hot and humid it still was at the beginning of October; and there was more rain than usual (daily). No big deal for us, since we were happy not hitting the parks all the time, but I feel bad for people who did get rained out more.
Random thought and ruminations
This is boring enough without giving a blow-by-blow, so I'll just jot down some things that were more memorable (well, to me at least):
- riding It's a Small World multiple times in a day is made only more "special" by riding it back-to-back without a period of "recovery". Thanks to DD3yo for introducing me to the joys of non-stop IASW.
- thanks to inside information provided by an anonymous source, I was able to locate and identify "Cinderella's horse" on the carousel. Of course, every subsequent ride then necessitated a mad dash around the carousel to obtain the same horse each and every time -- NO other horse would be acceptable.
- another random carousel thought: it takes about 5-6 rides on the carousel to take the same time as 1 viewing of Philharmagic. Poor planning here: I got to see Philharmagic with DD3yo, while DW went around, and around, and around, and around. And, she gets motion sick. Not a happy DW. On the other hand, DD14mo loved it.
- it is possible to have 2 strawberry swirls (my favorite), a citrus swirl, and a mickey bar in one day without getting (too) ill. Didn't get a chance to get a Dole whip though! Doh!
- the new Pooh playground (where the submarine ride used to be) is nice for kids. It is also a good place for 3yo's to learn not to lean over and stare into an interactive fountain. I have a nice action shot of her unexpectedly getting hit in the face with a jet of water, and the ensuing response. Magic! OK, maybe not.
- Cinderella's Royal Table is a lot of fun! (First time I've gotten to see it, got lucky and must have snagged somebody's cancellation ~2 weeks before the trip.) We went for lunch. Got a table at the window overlooking the carousel and Dumbo. Beast enjoyed being held on the balcony, and blew kisses to the teeming hordes below, all the while doing her "princess wave."
- Epcot Food+Wine booths were great. Qlthough someday I'd like to do the "real" events, even bringing the Beasts along to the booths worked out OK. Managed to snack our way most of the way around the International showcase. DD3yo now wants to be a Chinese acrobat. I foresee many broken things in the house soon.
- speaking of food, I can eat a LOT of bread pudding from the 1900 Park Fare character breakfast. A lot. Too much. I think I still feel ill. Oh, and giant characters should know better than to sneak up on 14mo kids.
- got a Fairy Godmother to watch the Beasts our last night at WDW (the poor, poor woman... I hope she recovers. I left a big tip.) We wandered Epcot a little before having a late dinner at Bistro de Paris. We both decided to do the prix fixe taster menu, ordering different choices. I also learned that if you are at the end of the meal and already stuffed, that it serves me right for making fun of the waiter for not asking for our dessert choice if he then brings a platter wiht ALL five of the desserts. I missed the word "sampler"... Wow, getting 5 times as much dessert as expected was decadent. Rolling back "home" to the Boardwalk was painful.
- there were many times when I was sorely tempted to chuck the kids into the waterway outside our room and see whether they would just float to Epcot. I decided it wouldn't be nice -- the people in the Friendship boats would probably get upset when they ran over the Beasts. Might even have damaged the boats.
- speaking of Friendship boats, a high point was walking along the waterway between the Swan/Dolphin and Boardwalk, hearing a boat captain talking to people on the shore through the megaphone. Imagine a mean voice; maybe an army seargeant's voice, or maybe the mean guy in prison you don't want to cross. Imagine that voice over a megaphone, coming from the Friendship boat, bellowing out to some random 8yo boy walking along: "Yo Boy! You! YOU in the blue shirt! Run... You hear me, boy?!? RUN BOY!" The boy looks around confused, and then starts running. "Run faster! FASTER. LIKE YOU MEAN IT! RUN!" Boy runs faster, leaving family behind. Perhaps at this point the CM on the boat realized that maybe this was not such a good idea for continued employment where the Magic Lives. "You BOY! Stop! STOP!" Boy keeps running -- apparently the fear of the Friendship boat captain is strong. "OK, boy... Keep running then. RUN!" For all I know, the boy in the blue shirt is still running.
- DD3yo decided she will no longer accept her given name. She is now to be referred to only as Cinderella. She told that to the person at the Homeland Security TSA checkpoint who was trying to verify our identification for the return trip.
- really enjoyed meeting Disfaniam, TheWolf, PixieBell, LisainNC & DD, DisKrista & DH. Left a note with dznymagic at the Poly but didn't get to meet her :( Now I think I'm more tempted to try one of the "Dis Meet" things someday. TheWolf, how did the picture of Beast sitting in a tree turn out?

I am ranting about the cat!! I came into the kitchen this morning but before I got there noticed dirt in the living room on the carpet and a small basil plant! THE CAT! I get to the kitchen near the plant and there is another small basil plant on the floor and dirt everywhere. I have been working on growing that basil for what seems like months and I am furious with him. One of the plants was re-plantable, but the other was chewed on past the point of return. Darn cat.

Why have a complex..."We got a FastPass at Space Mountain exactly at 8:32:54 AM and walked to the TTA in approximately 1:36 minutes" trip report when a report like that was so rewarding Bezoar! Thanks for letting me wake up the entire house with that quote. I don't think my mom appreciated being awakened by my horrible laugh...and to something I'm reading on the Internet no less! ;)

Not being able to get into VMK reminds me off all the times I've been stuck on Disney rides. 3 times stuck on Splash mt, by the way it take approximately 20 minutes for them to reset the computers at Splash MT. Once stuck on Test track, another 20 minutes for the reset. And finally stuck on the Norway ride just after the hill. The Norway experience was interesting. We go down the hill, and bang, the brake comes up and we're at a sudden stop. We all look back anxiously. Will another boat ram into us? Ok we're sitting and sitting. Now the lights come on. We're still sitting. We with a rowdy crowd. Ok, now with all this water sitting around us we all have to use a restroom. Brave sole in 2nd row saws she gives them 5 more minutes or she's getting out and walking to the exit. Out comes a Norway CM. His English is not the best. But he tells us that we won't have much longer to wait. We ask if we can just walk to that exit a few feet away. He tells us to stay sitting and he'll be back. He comes back and the answer is no. Ok, the protests begin loudy. Out pops Mr. Mechanic. He tells us all on the count of 3 to rock the boat. 1-2-3 ROCK. Ok this is mass chaos everybody rocking, shouting and no one going the same direction. My baby begins to scream from the madness. I'm laughing hysterically because we're in the back seat and the ppl in front of us look so silly screaming and rocking. We stop and get quiet. We get some order about us and we rock off the brake. Mr. Mechanic jumps in the water behind us and pushes us to the boats exit.
What does this have to do with VMK? Same as at real park, they don't tell you what's going on. They just leave you there waiting.

I've heard that some people had fun tours, where everybody traded screen names, or if they hadn't played before, would all create characters at VMK central and get on each other's friends lists. In fact, I think with the very first tours, the name badge would actually have your VMK name?
Anyway, this is ON TOPIC for the forum! How dare we! This is supposed to be the OFF TOPIC thread ;)

I have a question.....when did young children start to develop such an attitude?? No, I am not blanketing and saying all young kids are disrespectful little people, but helping out my son's first grade class this morning really opened my eyes.
I help out with the Accelerated Reading program for my son's class. I help the kids with their books, help them test and record their grades. Nothing major, right? Today, was total mayhem. Kids throwing things, one crawling on the floor and the yelling....I feel bad for the real teacher. I was listening to one child work her way through a book, but we kept being interrupted by these two children and their talking. Every once in a while I would shoot "the look". You know, the look a mom can shoot and make a child stop midword? Yeah, that one. Finally, the look wasn't enough so I said "Well, I see two people who don't want to read today and earn more points". I figured that would be enough to have them stay quiet for the rest of reading time. The little boy looks at me, turns his head and mumbles "Psh, I don't care, you're not my real teacher anyways!" :earseek:
Okay, when did kids start thinking it was okay to talk to an adult that way?! I would never have dreamed of talking that way in class....espescially not to a teacher. And in the first grade???? Yikes!! Makes me wonder how it will go on Wednesday. :confused3

Deep parental thought of the evening: it is truly awe-inspiring how much toilet paper a 14 month old can liberate in less than 30 seconds of freedom.

Ooh Ooh me me!! I can answer this one! :)
I can tell you that the answer lies in a couple places. 1. parents and 2. television (secondary parent in this day and age)
If parents are unwilling to teach their children to be respectful because they are too busy working or doing their own thing, who are they going to learn it from?
Many kids these days are raised by television and how many kids do you see on TV making sarcastic comebacks to their parents/friends/teachers/siblings? It runs rampant.
It's a snapshot of our future society walking into a classroom, I can tell you that.
Oh, and a comeback to the "I dont' care" thing is this: "I didn't ask if you didn't care." Then go on to ask them a few questions such as:
What do you want to do when you grow up?
What do you have to do to get there?
If you don't do well in school, will you achieve that goal?
(likely if you can get them to stop saying I don't care they'll say something about do well in school, and they'll say no they can't achieve it)
Then ask: IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?
Then what do you need to do right now?
Are you willing to work? will you work?
We use this method in our district and it works beautifully. Get the kid to own up to their own mistake and have them see WHY they need to be doing what they should be doing.
I realize I went on a total tangent here, but trust me. I have used it from 4 year old kindergarten students through seniors in high school. It works if you know the right things to ask. :)

:goodvibes Thanks for the ideas, Shorts! It just threw me when I heard it. Here I am helping the teacher out (I feel so bad for now) and I heard that. The rest of the kids are very sweet little children and they get so excited on the day that I come. They are actually excited to read to someone
I think the problem lies with this one child and his home life. I found out that he also cut my son's hair the other day (while there was a substitute there) and likes to copy off of people. DS said "I bet he gets in a LOT of trouble at home". Sadly I had to tell him, "Probably not, and that is why he acts out".
On a good note though, in January I am considering applying to substitute here in the County. I have always been involved in my son's schools, so why not take it a step further?? :confused3

Hate to break it to you, but even those kids that are taught respect will act up from time to time.. I should know! lol I have done my best to raise my kids to have respect for themselves as well as others..especially adults. I am there for them 24/7. They come first. I know what is going on in school, know what they are doing for homework, etc.. Having that said, I still get attitude here and there. I know there is a difference in the type of behavior and parenting you are talking about, but just wanted to make it known that even the good kids have their days! lol OH, and shorts... I TOTALLY agree with the whole tv influence thing. One day, when my 6 year old said to me, "Oh snaps! My bad!" I knew it was time to turn off the t.v.! :badpc: :rotfl:

So THAT is the culprit who wanted to play babershop with your DS...VERY interesting to see it is the same child who acted out yesterday. I do feel sorry for him in a way though. He probably is not getting enough attention and love at home. Work with him Tishke...Shorts really has some great ideas. :) Try turning it around and give him positive attention. Tell him "Whale Done" (if you have not read that book you SHOULD)!
So we have learned, don't give him attention for negative behavior, but make sure you encourage positive behavior.
Also, so excited to hear about sub-teaching! I think you will be fantastic at it! I bet teaching is such a fulfilling job to have :) To be molding these little lives...makes me want to shed happy tears :) :umbrella:

I am not a teacher by training, however, I taught Spanish at my son's school for 2 years. I taught the 3 year olds up through to the 7th graders. A few of the classes had some problem kids with discipline issues. At first I tried to be nice. But these kids didn't need a friend. So as I adapted to teaching I quickly learned, for sanity's sake, that they actually liked discipline. They wanted to know what I expected of them. I was able to teach them and by using discipline in a loving and caring way, we had a great 2 years!
GB where were you 3 years ago! It took me a long time to figure out how to get them to realize their own mistakes and take responsibility.
Tv---yes a big influence. This is why we do not have cable.
video games---huge influence. Big robber of attention span. Sure a kid can sit and play game boy and such, but things change every 15 minutes robbing kids of patience and attention span. In fact, my son's youth pastor had a meeting with the parents to tell us how when they meet things change every 15 minutes in order to keep their attention.
parents---huge influence. However, my brother and I were raised the same. I became the model citizen and he became the rebel without a cause. It was a matter of he knew what was right, but he made poor choices.
On a completely different note, I spent a few hours yesterday with Mickeysfriend at Epcot. We went on Soarin' and we sat in the front row. By far, the 1st row is THE best experience on Soarin'! It was great!

I almost began a new thread with this my latest pondering, but with the onslaught of new threadiness after the maze fiasco, I remembered this one, and have thus added myself to the list of random randomizers.
I began thinking about our (read: anyone on VMK) natural ability to communicate most concepts, ideas, and phrasings even with the limited vocabulary we are so blessed with whilst wandering about our virtual lands.
It amazes me how we humans have such persistence in our inherent need to communicate that we have developed a new speak, a new dialect, based on a technology, and resulting from the good intent of our friend, the Big White Hand of Safety.
We say things like 'on hunt red credits' and talk about how we 'heart' this or 'hat' that. I'm sure you can add many more phrases that are not in the official VMK dictionary, but have wormed their way into our daily speech patterns so much so, that they begin to bleed into our real life daily talk also, outside of the cartoon world where we live from open to close. Funny.
I am a scuba diver among other things, and while under water, the lack of air in the space we must communicate in necessitates an alternate form of communication with a sign language that has become so common to people of like hobby that I can flash an 'OK' sign to a dive friend sitting in the same above water room and he or she will know exactly what I am saying: 'I am in a satisfactory state of existence, my systems are all functioning properly, and my ears don't hurt.'
In a nutshell (where did we get that phrase from?), we people types must talk and convey our moods, our ideas, our plans, and our state of general existence to each other. We must speak our intention to help someone in need or our displeasure with a 'taken' drone. We must. We are simply wired that way. And this has been seen since the dawn of time (pause while reflecting on Spaceship Earth ride in Epcot).
And the limitations of the VMK-nese dictionary, both the abridged and the unabridged (our own phraseology) versions have inadvertently become, rather than limitations, another language to learn.
And the Hand, in its well-intentioned efforts, has not safe-guarded its children players as well as they would like to believe they have. With our persistence in our need and drive to inflect and articulate in any environment, we give the Hand a new problem with this possibly valid solution: Rid VMK of the dictionary that shows inclusion of words allowed and instead create a list of words that we are not allowed to speak that may be considered vulgar - much like the G movies we have all come to know and love.
But then, what words are considered vulgar? Most of us were brought up to know them, and I certainly won't attempt a list of them here or anywhere else as 1) this is a family oriented message board and 2) I personally think said vulgarities indicate a total lack of intelligence and an unlearned or lack of mastery of the English language.
Ok, I am done thinking about this now. Have a nice day.

Ah yes, learning another language.
Brings back memories of high school. My French teacher was Mrs. Huang - the wife of a Taiwanese importer/exporter. She spoke seven different languages, but her English had a STRONG Chinese accent, so I can only imagine what her French was like.

Fine... leave it to the English degree to have to take on this subject.
Most of us were certainly brought up to recognize certain words and actions as being vulgar, certainly. However, the culture does not permit these to remain the "standards of debasement" for long, since so many of these inappropriate sayings and deeds have been absorbed into the vernacular through the pervasive media and the unrelenting population explosion. And time continues to remodel our vernacular to accommodate this ever-rolling tide. Consider that just eighty years ago, a female who's ankle was showing was thought of as scandalous, and sixty years ago that was the opinion of a female knee showing beneath a skirt. Now VMK has short skirts and exposed midriffs on the avatars. I won't use any grammatical examples so as not to offend any of you folks out there who still believe that a four-letter word is the verbal equivalent of clubbing baby seals while wearing a commie fur hat, but I do enjoin you to remember that what is crude language to us now will be seen as quaint to our grandchildren (for example, "egad" means nothing to us now, but search its etymology sometime... and consider that VMK allows us that blasphemy but will not let us say the word "God.").
And regarding the notion that vulgarities are an indication of a lesser grasp of the language, I must protest. Is that something people saw in Reader's Digest years ago and thought it seemed like a safe motto? "Dirty words" have always had a place in the common lexicon, and if you really believe they are a sign of a poor mastery of my beloved English language, please explain the anomalies of Shakespeare, Twain, Faulkner, Forster, Bradbury, Heller, Salinger, Steinbeck, Ginsburg, Morrison, Aristophanes... and plenty more can be found who have committed a vulgarity or two in their works. Besides that, the very word "vulgar" used to mean "characteristic of or belonging to the masses," back when the upper class was busy trying to keep the common folks down and out. It has since morphed into our colloquial speech as a term for "coarse language." Well, that just proves my point about how time changes our speech, doesn't it?
I'm not saying anyone needs to teach "four-letter words" to kids as they learn their ABCs, but I am saying that just because someone chooses to use such language does not mean they can't rub two words together. And I am also saying what we think is offensive today will be on Law and Order next week.

The opposite is also true -- I have it on good authority that the term 'hagen' will soon be considered quite vulgar.

Fine... leave it to the English degree to have to take on this subject.
Ah. I am but a lowly electronics engineer academically, and a blue-collar, curse slinging, wrench tweaker and glorified meter reader by trade.
And I am also saying what we think is offensive today will be on Law and Order next week.
hagen
Well said sir. I am just pondering, and my opinion was by no means an attack on those words that somehow move movie ratings closer to the end of the alpha-numeric order by those who decide those things (whatever those things are). I merely attempt to teach my children, both of which were adopted at the ages of 4 and 10 approximately ten years ago (my effort to help slow the population explosion), that the words my father taught me were wrong to say and improper are still wrong and improper, and that there are methods of expression in our limited language that will allow them to express themselves in a much more intelligent manner -- my efforts in helping to slow the ever changing "standards of debasement."
I stand in firm agreement with you, and amazement, as the words that were once considered as "common," or vulgar (for what the word means today) are slowly becoming more and more accepted by culture. Conversely, many words that once described a condition or a person are now considered to be derogatory in the name of political correctness, and carry the same shock value as an f-bomb once did. Seven Dwarves? Shudder. Song of the South? Oh my. And the movie Aladdin praised a certain god in it's script way before the 9-11 attack turned much of America (at least for a few days) into a flag flying, racial profiling, shrieking bald eagle of passion. I don't know if Disney would do/say that in a film today, but in its day, Aladdin The Disney Movie was all that and a bag of orange and black candy corn (Happy Night Before All Saints Day uh... season). Ever wonder how we may be speaking in 20 years? I would think that you do, as a student of the English language, and obviously as a scholar of the history of our language.
Well thanks for the great read Hagen... I will continue to sit back and observe the dynamic world we live in, and if I can stir up the pot of pondering as I ride this spinning ball, I shall! It's just too much darn (can I say that here?) fun.
One day, George Carlin will set us all straight again, but until then, EGADS!

Nat Cell Biol. 2005 Oct;7(10):1014-20. Epub 2005 Aug 28.

It's actually in a very highly regarded journal too. Who ever knew that others have been Nedding in their own way as well?

I think this is reason to request the addition of these fine words into the VMK dictionary. With all the bacon passing previously, and soon fried squid and lava warm wings going around when surferrat comes back, our protein accumulation could probably use some regulation.
Yes, I would like the Neddylation Station Lava Warm Wings please. Thank you. Followed up with a Deneddylation tea knee. ah.

Well, now it's weeks later and DD15mo still goes through the laundry and sticks underwear on her head. DW is wondering how long this fashion statement is going to continue, and is shooting me nasty looks every time DD15mo does it. (She tried to remove the "hat", and DD15mo started crying.)

Magical Disney moment happened to us today. Dh and I took our toddler to MGM Studios. We went to see Sorc Mickey. Our little one hugged him and squeezed his nose. He posed for pics. As we were getting ready to leave, I started putting his jacket on him. He began to fuss. Mickey came over to us and helped. Then he took our little guy by the hand, and they walked hand-in-hand. I've been thinking about that whole princess hat thing. Everyone is going around saying, oh they released it by mistake, yada, yada.. I truly wonder if that was a mistake though. It just doesn't seem very likely that it could be a mistake. The only way for it to be is that whomever is in charge of adding items to the shops, for some reason thought they were supposed to put it out, then someone else (in the know) saw later that it was there and told them to pull it. But why? :confused3
Was it really harmful for the item to be there? What difference does it really make? I'm beginning to really wonder about the motivation behind new items, lands and games in VMK. Oh to be a fly on the wall in a VMK staff meeting..
:listen:
Staff 1 : We need to release costumes for halloween
Staff 2 : Great, will we release all the new ones we've teased them with on the testers?
Staff 1: Heck no! Lets release just two or three new ones, and then bring back the ones they've already seen and own.
Staff 3: Which new ones then?
Staff1 : Well, since it is Halloween, I guess we sort of have to give them the haunted mansion suit, we’ll just release two colors, not all three. We’ll also release the blue princess dress, since we sort of fell asleep on releasing it to coincide with the Cinderella DVD.
(Everyone laughs)
Staff 1: Oh, and lets not forget that handsome yellow explorer suit.
Staff 2: Oh yes, they love to dress and play as explorers! They must, why else would they play jungle cruise more than any other game we have?
Staff 3: Is it time for the princess hat too?
Staff 1: Hmm.. I can’t decide on that yet, are we sure we’ve done enough testing on boys wearing it?
Staff 3: Yavn says that his boy testers wear it every chance they get, especially when alone in their secret rooms.
Staff 1: And all is ok with it?
Staff 3: He says it needs just a little more testing, more widespread in the game.
Staff 1: Ok, lets do this then, lets release it for about an hour in the daytime, that way our boy adult players will flock to buy it, especially after we plant a post on the dis boards and the fan site. If it does ok, we release it officially, but don’t be specific about when.
Staff 3: This is going to be a great week!
(everyone nods in agreement, patting each other on the back)

OK, I have nothing funny or witty to add to this thread  , but I am bursting with happiness because I am going to London!!!
Just booked the trip (in exchange for our now defunct, once-in-a-lifetime Cancun trip...and my heart goes out to all those affected by these awful hurricanes BTW).
We were going to go in less than 3 wks. Our London trip will be in just over a month though. We had to change the dates to get it to work out. I was playing "spin the globe" for a couple of days...we were considering Puerto Rico, Kauai, Quebec, Puerto Vallarta, etc. Nothing was working out for a variety of reasons. But DH found a killer deal on London...a place I have *always* dreamed of going. For some time it has been my #1 most wanted place to go. So I am a very happy camper. :teeth:
Thanks for letting me share. :goodvibes

good news, bad news, good news...lol
good news, looks like my gang and my brothers gang may be heading to WDW in march, rather than going in july like we first thought. still planning, will try and set up some meets once we settle on dates.
Bad news, wish me luck on my midterm tonight that i have to take in one of my night courses.
which brings me to good news:
the Prof. is letting us take it open book, and use all our notes. So i dont need much luck lol. (it only counts for 10% of our final grade, this dude is more concerned with writing papers during the semester  )
Anywho, see y'all later tonight, got to run to class now lol.
Edit: ok that was quick, multiple choice lol. and got out an hour early...woot! lol
And CONGRATS nmu! Just got into Kappa Delta Pi, the Education Honor Society, Myself, this semester. :teeth:

Halloween Party...Disney Style. Last night we went to Downtown Disney to Trick or Treat. It was every bit as well planned and fun as MNSSHP! There were FREE decorate your own pumpkin cookies. They were delicious! (Our toddler kept calling them cake, hehe...thought of my zeta sisters and their minute cake.) There were magic shows, and stilt walkers, costume parades, dancing, story telling, and of course trick or treating. Everything was free! This is a great alternative for those who can't get tickets for MNSSHP. Before we headed home we ate a Wolfgang Puck express...yum!

Luvthattink, we also went to DTD last Halloween night, did not expect to like it much, but ended up having a great time and staying until early in the morning. The Butternut Squash soup at Wolfgang express is fantastic!
Here is my thought for the day, "How am I supposed to save for Magic Carpet Ride Magic Pin if they keep coming out with new stuff to buy"? :confused3

Today is awards day it seems.....
DS6 came got in the car this afternoon at school with a paper inviting me to awards morning at his school tomorrow. He is being awarded for getting into the "pilot fish" club. (reading 50 gazillion accelerated reader books)
Then I got home and checked the mail and got a certificate for getting onto the President's list last quarter at school. (Higher than 3.96 GPA) Logged onto school and found out midterm grades were out and I've got A's so far *knock on wood*.
Now if only my day would end perfectly with DH folding the rest of the laundry.....a girl can dream, right??? princess:

Ok, several people have asked where I was October 15th through the 28th...Surferrat thought I was in WDW, and others just were not sure. I was in Cancun, Mexico for all of 4 and 1/2 days when Hurricane Wilma decided to invite herself to the party and then did not leave for 4 more days! We were stuck in a shelter in old downtown Cancun for a total of 5 and 1/2 days with very little food or water, which actually proved to be a good thing because this shelter (an elementary school) had no running water- thus you really did not want to have to go to the bathroom! The electricity had been cut off a full day before the storm hit too.
When the eye of the storm finally parked itself over us for something like 30 hours, the locals in the neighborhood began bringing hot pots of coffee and hot soups and freshly made tortillas. They even gave their own clean clothes to those who had gotten soaked when our shelter flooded in the rain. They really are just amazing people and we were so appreciative of everything they tried to do for all of us! We all helped them to start clearing the debris from their streets and sweeping water from their own damaged houses, but they were still more concerned for us! :grouphug:
I do not know how all the Florida and coastal residents can go through these storms time and time again- we were basically just inconvenienced on our vacation, but some of you lose your homes! :guilty:

Now...this is one to ponder over...
How can a husband misplace a bag of brown sugar?!?
I went to make my oatmeal tonight...went into the pantry...and alas, no brown sugar! It was a fairly new bag so not exactly on the light side :confused3
When I call DH at work to confront him about this (since clearly I did not touch it since I had oatmeal yesterday, and I don't think our dog has quite learned how to open the pantry door and climb up 3 shelves...), and his reaction was "I don't remember what I did with it. I moved things around in there. No, I don't remember if I threw it out".
