View Full Version : Disk Protect??

I have an older Sony Mavica camera that uses floppies. I recently bought some new ones (Memorex). Several of them are giving me a Disk Protect message on my camera right out of the box. Others I can use them once or twice and then I get that message.

The old floppies I have (Imation brand) have done that too but it's very rare.

My questions are, first of all, what does Disk Protect mean? Why does it happen especially to a floppie that's never even been used once? What can I do to make it stop?! :teeth:

Floppies are getting hard to find. Wal Mart use to have a wide variety to choose from but these Memorex ones were the only brand that was still available.

Thanks for any help with this! :sunny:

Usually on the bottom of the floppy is a small black box that can be slid up or down, that is how you write protect a floppy. I don't know what position the box(switch) should be, either up or down, but compare the ones that are giving you this msg to one that is not and make sure the switch is in the correct position.

Thanks. Even though they all "Looked" the same I tried pushing the lock thingy on one of the disks that was telling me it was protected. For whatever reason, that solved the problem. :confused3

They must just be really touchy. :teeth:

If the latch thingy (is that the technical term for it?) gets lost, you can still make the disk writeable by putting a piece of electrical tape over the hole. Most of the cameras or PCs will test to see if the hole is covered but are not smart enough to know what is covering the opening. It gets you by in a bind.
