Try clicking on the photo wherever you have it stored. Highlight but don't open. then I have a link that allows e-mail photo. If you click this link it allows you to downsize photos before sending. Just downsize and send to your own e-mail address. This is all assuming that you don't have a photo software to downsize photos. Hope this helps :thumbsup2

Grab IrfanView (www.irfanview.com) and install it. Use it to view your picture. Hit S (or File, Save As) and change the jpg quality to somewhere between 75% and 80%. Uncheck the boxes for saving exif, etc data. Check the file size then.
Note that there are size restrictions. If your picture is too big, ctrl-R brings up the resize dialog box in IrfanView, use that to resize the photo then save it.

photobucket has an option to change the picture to avatar size.
I ran into the same issue you did a while back. It is frustrating. I used PhotoShop Elements to save the file to a file size that was below 4K. Took a few tries though. The picture has to end up being VERRRRYYYY small.
Be sure to change the name of the file. Last thing you want to do is change the size of the original file. I always add at least another letter or number when I do a SaveAs.
Once you get the right size you will be able to change your avatar, however until you have made a minimum of 10 posts in these forum topics you wont be able post a picture or link. So if you continue to have trouble, just go to the birthday board and wish a bunch of people happy birthday to get your post total over 10, then post the picture here and I'm sure someone will be happy to help out.
Good luck.

x2abercrombie2x, I notice you've got a low post count. You might want to check the board rules. I believe you have to have a certain number of posts before you can have an avatar. That could be another reason you're having problems with posting a pic as an avatar. However, it's been awhile since I've seen the guidelines, so I could be wrong about that.
Hope you are able to get the avatar you want!

x2abercrombie2x - Don't you hate it when something that seems so simple isn't! I don't see your avatar so I'm guessing you haven't got this figured out yet. Let's see if we can help. Here's another thing to try:
Go to where your photo is hosted online.
Right click on the photo and then click on properties.
Select and copy the Address (URL)
Post that link on this thread
One of us - whoever sees it first, I'm sure, will resize it for you and send it back to you.

you have to have 10 posts before you can post a picture, I am guessing that it might be the same for an avatar

We have Earthlink service and when you try to send a photo by e-mail there is a POP-UP (I called it a link) that asks if you want to make your pictures smaller or keep original file size. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

the avatar limit is very small.
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 3.9 KB (whichever is smaller).
I had the hardest time getting my palm tree that small. By the time I resized it to 100 pixels wide it was still way too big of a file. Until I did "save for web" in photo shop and it dropped the file size by about 80%. Have your friend try that, or send it my way.

See my earlier post about IrfanView. I just added an avatar and had to set quality down to 80% to get it under the 4k barrier. Just follow the instructions from there and if the picture is still too big, resave it with a slightly lower quality level until it's small enough. It's easier than it sounds.
