They do it because the only way to get the Dining Plan is to add it to a room and ticket package. You only need buy a 1 day ticket to make your reservation a room & ticket package - no matter how many nights you stay.
Most of the people who buy the 1 day tickets to get the DIning Plan are frequent WDW visitors and already have APs or PAPs. Rather than using the 1 day ticket, they just keep it until it is time to buy a new AP/PAP (or renew one). At that time, they can turn the 1 day ticket in and get credit towards the AP/PAP.

When we went for free dining we had to get 4 1 day passes. We are DVC and my DH and I already had our AP's. We were able to use the 4 tickets as credit toward the 2 AP's my kids needed. So we got about a $260 credit towards them as well as our $200 for being DVC members, we also had $100 in Disney dollars from a referral split.
For us it worked out good.
It costs us $700ish for the room (sold 70 points to cover that) and then paid about $350 for 2 Ap's.
So 6 nights, 2 AP's and free dining for under $500.00
Fabulous deal!

Can you combine the DVC discount and the ticket upgrade on the same AP purchase? I have 2 one day tickets left from last year, and I just joined DVC this week. I was just planning on buying a 10 day ticket, but if i can combine that would be even better!!
Thanks

I also had an unused 1 day ticket from a dining package. I knew I could use it to get a credit on my annual pass purchase. Sadly, I had a CM at the international Gateway give me a very hard time. 1st tried to say I couldn't do it. I firmly insisted. He then claimed that my annual pass would be back dated to the day I purched the 1 day ticket. He was rather agitated about people taking a "part of a package and trying to use it in a way that was not intended." I had to work hard at that point to remian polite. I explained that I wasn't trying to pull off some kind of scam, just upgrade an unused ticket to an annual pass. It took a very long time.....It did finally get done. To this day I'm not sure why this was such a problem for him.
I went on to the Party for the Senses that night and promptly forgot about the ordeal until I saw this thread. Makes me wish I had asked another CM or supervisor if this should have been such a problem.
Just a little beware, be polite, but be firm when coming across someone who seems to have thier own set of rules.

TammyOr go to the Guest Relations in Downtown Disney - the CMs there are among the best trained and most professional in all of WDW.
Sammax - you can turn in one of your 1 day tickets towards a new AP or PAP and also get the DVC-discounted price on the AP/PAP. Of course you need the proper ID. :)
You cannot upgrade (or get a dollar credit) for more than one ticket per new ticket purchase and you cannot get credit for complimentary tickets (the ticket will say complimentary on the back).
