I've never heard of this until I joined these boards.

It's a sort-of global treasure hunt. People hide a box or container containing small prizes or objects, then list the GPS coordinates and a small clue where to look. People can then find those coordinates on their GPS hardware and go look for it. You're suposed to take one item from the cache, and leave another. People usually make the stuff they leave a personalized item.
