USA has changed the deadline for passports from Jan. 2007 to June 2009.
Also they are investigating another form of ID that will be acceptable call the Smart Card ... a ID card with pic and a barcode that will be swipped at customs to display needed personal info. They will be cheaper... approx. $20 -$30 for adults and $10-$15 for kids.
Just saw it on CTV News....
We travel abroad so we will stick with our passport. But its a money saver for those who only travel to the States :thumbsup2

I knew they would do this as we decided to get passports for our trip and figures that they have now extended the deadline and are thinking of changing things and prices by lowering the price and making things cheaper. Oh well I will just have to make the most of my passport and use it to go someplace that I really need it for like Europe :)

The issue is how long will these travel cards be good for the US was maing a big stink about having to get passports to come over here so the US has now had to try and play nice about it. I would still rather have a passport the travel card is fine for the occasional trip across the border but is still not going to be enough for when you go on a cruise etc.

I just checked on CTV online, and it seems that the Jan. 1st requirement for passports if you fly is still in effect. they were just talking about new ID cards in the US, and they also mentionned the change to the border crossings by land changes made a few weeks ago.

I'm from the US but have been looking into this since I'm hoping to fly out of Calgary in January. According to the State Dept. website the Jan 1, 2007 deadline for air travel into the US has been changed to Jan 8, 2007 (to make for an easier transition during the holiday travel).

I plan to leave on Jan 4, which according to this will be fine without a passport. I'm assuming there will be no problem coming back into Canada on Jan 10 without a passport.

I wouldn't be to sure of that as I would make sure before you leave that you will be ok without a passport. I know I would hate to go away only to find out that they won't let me come back into Canada without oneI'm from the US but have been looking into this since I'm hoping to fly out of Calgary in January.
