View Full Version : The Christmas 2006 Tree Swap Now Closed!

UrsulasShadow
10-16-2006, 10:24 PM
This swap is now closed! Here are the lists...please contact the person before or after you in the swap to set up a swap time/ meeting place/ drop off point. If you don't hear from the person before/after you in a reasonable amount of time, please let me know and we'll bump them off the list and try to rearrange somewhat. If, for whatever reason, you're unable to participate, please PM me and I'll take you off the lists. I have PMs out to some people who, it turns out, top their list. If I don't hear from them in a couple of days, I'll drop them off and ask the next person in line to supply a tree. Any questions? Either post or PM me, and I'll try to answer promptly. It won't be long now...some folks are leaving in 3 weeks!

Here's the list...there is some switching between resorts, so make a note of that. The ones with :santa: next to their names are responsible for providing the tree.

That would be great! Usually, it plays like this...a person or family who stays at WDW at the beginning of the holiday season brings a small, (cheap)decorated tree with them for their stay. When they leave, instead of packing the tree up in their souvenir-overloaded suitcases, they pass the tree on to another family just arriving for their holiday vacation. If there's enough people involved in the swap, many times the tree never has to leave its resort-of-origin, but sometimes folks meet up in a convenient location to do the pass-off. Sometimes there's a day or two of overlap, then it can be decided between the parties when they want to pass off the tree. If in the course of this thread, you find someone you want to meet up with, post it here and I'll update it, otherwise, I'll try to match you up as best I can near the end. Sound good? Let me know and I'll put you on the list.

I'm interested in the swap. We'll be at the Yacht Club from 12/23 -12/27. I'll actually have a tree I wouldn't mind swapping. It'll be a small snowman decorated live tree - .

Edited: to add the link for the tree I'll have. It will be about 26 inches high. Kinda cute

Here it is, the thread you've all been waiting for...The Official Resort Christmas Tree Swap Thread! No, really, without all the fanfare, this is a fun way to meet other DISers and get your resort decorating needs met. Many of us like to put a little Christmas (or holiday) tree as part of our resort room decorations during this festive time of year, but who wants to pack it all up and take it home at the end of the trip? Not me, anyway. So instead, we find another DISer who has just arrived for their "fun in the winter holiday sun" vacation, and pass the tree on to them! They might be in the same resort, or if both parties are willing to do the swap, in resorts that are convenient for one or the other to travel to.
I've included a list of folks who have already expressed an interest in this, so jump right in and let us know where you'll be and when, and I'll add you to the list. When we get closer to the holidays, we'll work out all the details of which tree to whom and where. You can use any tree you like, fake or real, prelit or not, decorated in any way you want...it just has to be portable. If you have a link to trees that can be bought online, please share that, too!

Here's the list so far....

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. I think Triplefigs closed it the 3rd week in October, but I thought I'd keep it running until the 1st of November, since I started it a little late. We don't have anyone on the swap arriving before Thanksgiving yet, but if we do, I may adjust the closing date to give everyone a chance to get the tree ordered or bought (esp. if buying online it might take time). How does that sound? Any thoughts on this?

Hi UrsulasShadow,

I didn't know this thread existed. We are sharing a tree for the first 1/2 of our trip over at OKW via a thread on the DVC board. I'm bringing down at least one tree (maybe two) or shipping them ahead. But I'd love a tree to finish off our trip - 11/22-24 at BC - if there's one available. Or maybe I can ship a third and leave it there.

Over on the DVC Tree share board - we will leave an envelope inside the box and folks can share the shipping expense back to the owner at the end of the holiday season. Is that similar to what you've done in the past?

Let me know if you need me to supply a tree. I haven't boxed them up yet because our trip is still a surprise for my kids and I don't want them catching on too early. But I have a bunch of minature trees, lights and ornaments. What I don't have in ornaments I can buy in a few weeks...

In the past (okay, last year is the only one I've participated in :goodvibes ), we didn't bother shipping back, but the last person with the tree was responsible with the ultimate fate of the tree...they could keep it, they could donate it to their local nursing home, they could arrange to ship it back, or they could do what I did...leave it as a holiday tip for Mousekeeping. If you'd like to arrange it otherwise, feel free to pm all parties in your swap-line (when we finally have one!) and set up whatever works for you. The first person in the swap line will be responsible for supplying the tree, so if this doesn't work for you, maybe you can pm the others in your line and ask them to share expenses. I keep the tree cheap, and I'd have one anyway, and I'd leave it for Mousekeeping anyway, so it isn't an extra expense for me...but if it is prohibitive for anyone, I'm sure we'll all understand.

I was the only one at SSR last year! If you don't mind traveling, you can arrange to pick it up at another resort. I arranged to pick up mine from the desk at Contemporary, since the DISer I was getting it from and I couldn't figure out a mutually-agreeable time, so she left it there for me with my name on it. On my arrival day I was having dinner at the CG, so it was convenient to pick it up then. (The addendum to this little story is...I forgot to pick it up  , but the next morning there was a knock on my door, and there was the nicest CM, standing there holding my tree! I don't recommend this as a method, but it was the first of the pixie dust I got on that trip!).

We'll know better when I start setting things up, but you're pretty early, so you may be first in your line. I'm going to hunt online for inexpensive trees, and when I have some links, I'll post them. If anyone else has links, please post them here!

Actually, I think the shipping it back part might be hard for most. I'll check and see if I can pre-pay for UPS and then someone could just leave it at the front desk. I have the trees and the decorations....it's just that I have a bunch that I use outside. I do a lot of holiday stuff including running a Holiday House Tour. I never know when I might need them! I have a basement full of decorations - boxes and boxes of stuff. I'm not only a DIS and Disney aholic ....I'm a Christmas decoration aholic. They are all nightmarish diseases to catch. :lmao:

At this time I think we will bow out. We've talked as a family and have decided that we will pass on the tree but it will be to a family that will be checking in on the day we check out. We decided to do this so we wouldn't have to worry about trying to get two people together to make the swap. Thanks for the great ideas though

Have a wonderful WDW holiday!

Thanks, Paula. Just now noticed you said you could provide a tree, so I updated the list to mention that. Thanks for that!

Everyone, check the list to make sure I have everything right on it, okay? I'm not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree when it comes to these things (chuckle, snicker, snort).

You know, I just thought of something. Seems like there's quite a few people arriving later in the month that can provide trees. I know I'm shipping mine down to the resort beforehand, so I thought I might just ship it down earlier to an earlier arrival, and they can pass it on to me when I arrive. Is anyone else thinking this may work for them?

We are going 12/1-12/9. We arrive on Friday 12/1 and we will be staying at ASMO. The first evening we have ADR's @ Kona and we plan on taking a monorail tour of all of the monorail resorts Holiday Decorations so I can pick up a tree up at any of these resorts.

I am a frequent disboarder on the weddings and honeymoon page. We are getting married at Disney in December. We have 2 stays and would love a tree for both or at least one part of the stay.

We are staying at the Port Orleans Riverside from 12/7 - 12/11/06. The only tough part would be getting the tree to the next person on the 11th. That is the day of our wedding.

The next part of the stay is from 12/12 - 12/16/06 at the Port Orleans French Quarter.

The night of our wedding (12/11) we are staying at the Grand Floridian - Disney pays for it. :goodvibes

Thanks for setting this up. I would be unable to bring a tree since we will be traveling from NJ with all of our wedding stuff. :wizard:

Thanks again for organizing this!!!

We will be staying at Saratoga Springs from December 16 - 22nd. We will be coming from the Disney Magic, so we will not be able to bring a tree but would love to swap and such! This will be a great addition to our honeymoon! Please add us to the list, hopefully it will work out! Oh, we will be leaving on December 22 at 10:00AM, so we would have to swap the tree on the 21st.

Thanks,

Okay, I've added you in.
I'm putting this out there for everyone...seems like more people are putting in requests for trees than volunteering to bring trees...especially for the early December arrivals. If anyone who isn't marked down for volunteering a tree can bring or ship one (esp. late Nov/early Dec. arrivals), would you please PM me? I'd hate to set all this up, only to find that there's no tree to swap!

Just copied this from the American Airlines website..... :thumbsup2
Dimensions, Weight and Number of Pieces

For flights wholly within the United States and between the United States and Canada
The maximum amount of baggage each ticketed passenger is allowed free of charge is:
2 pieces checked and one carry-on
Please note that one carry-on personal item (see "Carry-on Allowance") does not count toward the free bag allowance.

The size limitation of your luggage is calculated by adding the total outside dimensions of each bag, that is, length + width + height.
Two checked bags at 62 in/157 cm each

One carry-on bag at 45 in/114 cm
The maximum weight per checked bag is 50 lbs/23 kgs.
The maximum weight per carry-on bag is 40 lbs/18 kgs.

However I saw someone on the list that was arriving at the POLY on Dec. 16th so I could probably leave it at the front desk I would think. Also I saw someone was leaving from the POLY on the 10th...maybe we could work something out that morning when they leave or the night before on the 9th? I feel that cdndislvr had a great idea with gathering airline information for our trips. I know many here on the DIS fly Southwest so I though I would copy their baggage policy. This is right from their site.

Southwest Airlines Baggage Information
Checked and Carryon Baggage

Checked BaggageScreening and Identification: Checked baggage will be screened and is subject to physical inspection as mandated by the TSA. Customers may be required to present identification. Regulations require name identification on the outside. We recommend placing identification on the inside of baggage, too. Name labels are available at Southwest Airlines ticket counters. Once you've checked your luggage, make sure you receive a separate claim check for each piece of baggage you've checked. Check to make sure that the city shown on the claim check(s) matches your final destination.
Please see the TSA's web site for a list of prohibited items.

Baggage Allowance: For each ticketed Customer, Southwest allows three (3) checked pieces with size limitations for each individual piece.

Excess Baggage: Excess baggage will be charged at the rate of $50.00 for the first (1st) through the ninth (9th) extra bag and $110.00 for each piece checked thereafter.

Weight and Size Allowance: Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage. Effective March 1, 2005, overweight items from 51 to 70 pounds will be accepted for a charge of $25.00 per item. Items weighing from 71 to 100 pounds and oversized items in excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches (i.e., surfboards, bicycles, vaulting poles) will be accepted for a charge of $50.00 per item. Any item weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped as Air Cargo. However, Customers cannot use SWA Cargo unless classified as a Known Shipper as defined by the FAA or FAA approved Indirect Air Carriers (IAC). For all Cargo inquires please call the Cargo Sales and Service Center at 1-800-533-1222.

:bounce: :santa: :bounce: Those of us flying Southwest can have Three .... 3 checked items ! Woo Hoo now I know I don't have to ship a tree. :thumbsup2

I thought this would help some others.

Tomorrow will be the last day to sign up (Halloween). I close the swap to any newcomers 11/1 first thing in the morning (I'll count the overnight submissions). I will post the lists within a day or two of that, and I will start PM'ing the "first in line" people to see if they're still in, and will be supplying a tree. If they bow out, I'll take them off the list and ask the 2nd in line, and so on. As soon as the list is posted, you can start PM'ing the person before and after you in line in order to set up your own swap. Please let me know if you get no response from the people you're swapping with, so I can bump them off the list and rearrange. So, as you can see, the sooner you let me know where you stand, the easier it is for me, and everyone else involved.

Thanks, everyone, for your involvement in this! It really does add a sparkle to the holiday vacations!

You may be the recipient of a tree from the YC, since they're so close by. I'll do my best with the lists, so that the swap occurs as close as possible to one person's checkin/ the other person's checkout, but that may mean going between resorts a little. As soon as I work the lists, it may become a little clearer.

Okay, everyone, I posted the lists on page 1! Got it done sooner than I originally planned, because I suspect there's going to be some changes requested, and wanted to give us some time to work with them. Look over everything on the list, PM the people before and after you on your list to set up drop off/ pick up times and places. If you have a santa next to your name, that means you're bringing a tree (or shipping one, bless you, paper1225!). If this doesn't work for you, PM me ASAP! This only works if everyone participates, and I don't want to see anyone disappointed (not that anyone can be disappointed in WDW around Christmastime!). Thanks for all your involvement, and see you around the holidays!

Now the front desk will definately hold the tree for a few days if there is a gap between days, correct?

UrsulasShadow
11-03-2006, 08:41 AM
I'm counting on it...they have always done it before. Just make sure to put the full name of the recipient, the check-in date, and the resort they're from (if it's different from the resort they're picking up at), along with "Hold for Check-In" on the package. They hold packages shipped to them in this way, so I don't think it will be a problem. I'd make sure it's in a bag or box, though.

EDITED TO ADD:
Okay, that answer wasn't definite enough, and I hate wishy-washy answers! So I called up Coronado Springs directly, spoke to Thomas (thanks, Thomas!), and he said it's no problem to leave a package for someone checking in later. Leave it with Bell Services, and remember, that's where you will be directed to pick it up as well, at Bell Services. There! A REAL answer!

How nice. I wish I would have seen this one sooner, our dates would have worked well with Swap 5. Oh well, maybe next time.

Well, I can't believe that it's been 20 days since we left! OMG where does the time go?? It was a whirlwind but the best time we have ever had! Domi's little head exploded and we all had a riot! As he says... it was SUPERWICKED!!
We had a perfect trip from the start.. leaving on Thanksgiving Day was the best! Not a soul at the airport in the early am! No lines for anything, including security! Traveling was a joy! Then we were upgraded from a garden wing to a tower room at the Contemporary! It wasn't the MK side but who's complaining!? It was the trip of our dreams! They sure made our wishes come true!
The swap went great!! I thought I was only a few minutes late meeting JennsmominRI but when I got back to our room, I think I was actually over 1 hr late!! No wonder she was so surprised that we actually ran into each other!! I have to apologize to her but I did not realize that our clocks must have been 1 hr off!! Anyway, I met a lovely woman, her friend and her husband and made the swap. Unknown how I will get my tree back as the last person in the swap has not responded to me but oh well....I will keep trying so I don't lose it! The message to return the tree was going to go along with it and all my information is on it so I am hoping to see it again someday so that I can use it for next year!!
I will post a photo as soon as I can figure out how to attach it to my message. It looks like the site is having issues.
Anyway, I hope everyones' swaps go as well as ours and that they have just as good of a time! I big Thank You to UrsulasShadow for putting this together! It was an awesome idea and the only souveniers we really bought were ornaments! It was lovely to see the tree in the room at night with the new ornaments for the day and now we will use them at home to remember this great adventure!!
Booking the next trip right away!! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to everyone!!

Bad news. :( Somewhere between the AKL and Pop, Disney lost tree swap 7's tree. :( I had them looking everywhere, but it they can't find it. It was no one in the swap, but Disney dropped the ball. *tear* But hey, we're still having a fantastic time here - just did the Keys to the Kingdom tour and now it's time for a nap!!! Talk to you all when we get back!

Yup, happened in my swap, too, at least one of them. I'm hoping it still might show up. I'm also thinking that maybe bringing them to luggage services to hold might work out better, since the front desk doesn't seem terribly well-equipped to handle this. Let us know what worked for you!

Miracle on Tree Swap 7 street!!! They found it! The day after posting this they found it laying in the back of luggage services. :) So we get it for 2 days and Cinderella Fan's DM can get it too! HOORAY!

Thanks to UrsulaShadow for all your work. Our tree was waiting for us at check in and we loved it! It was on for our whole trip...which went by too quickly, of course. WDW at Christmas is wonderful! We've only visited in the summer before.
The concierge at POP was very helpful when I brought the tree back upon leaving. He put several tags on the box, so I hope the swap worked.

I'm glad this worked out for many of you. I keep hearing about lost trees that really shouldn't have been lost, but are found later. I think the front desk is really overburdened, and doesn't have a clear policy on how to deal with packages. Some are found in Bell services, some in luggage handling, some just appear out of nowhere in the rooms! So my advice is, whoever takes over the tree swap next year, advise folks to make their swaps IN PERSON if possible! I don't think it'll be me doing this next year, as I have to save a little money for retirement and skip Disney!

So happy to hear of the swaps that worked, though, and happy to hear that everyone has been having great vacations! Mine was fantastic, and too short!

Unfortunately, Swap 11 didn't happen. I got a message from Diane when I checked in that she never got the tree at her resort. Another lost tree, I guess.

It was great being at WDW during Christmastime anyway!:goodvibes :santa:

Stauncie,

I was there from 12/16-12/26...and never got the tree. The hotel said it was never left. I checked on it everyday and had several hotel front desk managers looking for it. The tree was never located or left for us by CinderellaIam. I tried to call her several times and left messages, but got no call back. I assume she took the tree when she left.

Thanks,

Ben Martin

Ben,

As we discussed before I left, the tree was left at the front desk for you with your name on it on 12/14. They said it would be brought over to bell services but if you asked for it at the desk they would refer you to the bell desk. I feel bad that you didn't get it.

Stauncie went through a lot of trouble finding me to make sure I got the tree, and then I took a trip (via AK) to the AKL and back to make sure you got the tree. Not sure where you called me, as I checked out of BCV on 12/14 and the only messages I received were from Stauncie :confused3

To imply that I took the tree...that is very insulting and rude.

Stauncie, if you need help in locating the tree, please let me know and I will make as many phone calls as necessary to track down your tree.

LIKE I SAID...

The front desks do NOT seem to be well-equipped to handle the swaps. There doesn't seem to be a firm protocol on this. Trees were getting lost, NOT DUE to anything the swap members did or did not do, but because the front desks seem overburdened. It's not fair to accuse anyone of not doing their part in this, especially when I posted just a couple posts earlier that trees are getting misplaced by the resort staff. And, as frustrating as it is, it's not really their job, either. This is probably somewhat my fault, as I organized this swap without fully understanding the limitations of the resorts. It seemed to go so much more smoothly last year, and there were SEVERAL inter-resort swaps arranged. I don't know what happened, but please, LET'S NOT blame each other! Blame me if you must.

I will blame myself, first. I wasn't organized, and didn't communicate myself with everyone in swap #1. Sorry, guys. Goodness, I didn't even think to get CinderellaIam's REAL name!!! Disney does NOT know her as CinderellaIam ;)
Besides the fact that we had a HORRIBLE stay, found out our reservation had been cancelled just 2 days before we left for our trip, and then they had given away our room, so we ended up staying at the AKL reg room(nice, but NOT the concierge room we had originally booked at the Yacht Club) I called my son at home, had him check the DIS board to see if cinderellaIam had left me her contact info. Rest assured that Disney does NOT give out your info. It took 1 cast member and 1 manager at the AKL, and then 2 desk clerks and someone from the back office at the Beack Club to finally contact CinderellaIam, using the clues I had.

Ben -
I am so sorry that you didn't get a chance to use the tree. Please accept my apologies.

CinderellaIam,

If you can let my know WHICH desk you left it at (Yacht Club or Beach Club), and any claim #'s or names you left with it, it would help in finding the box.
Poor Momma spent almost 2 hours at the Beach Club yesterday looking for the tree. She is a cast member, so she was personally checking bell services, and said that it was a TOTAL MESS in there.
There IS a 10 ft tree they kept trying to give her, left last February!! :lmao:

Oh, stauncie, I'm so sad that you had a difficult time of it! I hope your entire vacation isn't ruined. I love the AKL, but if you were counting on an entirely different area and concierge to boot, wow, that is a let-down (esp. if you didn't even get a room with a savannah view).

If anyone decides to do this swap next year, make sure that people end up meeting face-to-face to swap. If that can't work, I don't think it would be worth it to go through this much trouble.

Stauncie,

As I said, you went through some awesome hoops to locate me, and I appreciated it. I went the same day we spoke to AKL and picked up the tree. I, in turn, left it for Ben Martin (this is the name I put on the box) on 12/14 at the Beach Club front desk. They had a bellman come over for it, I don't remember his name, but I do remember that his name tag said he was from West Islip, NY - I remember this because that is where the airport is located that we were flying into that evening. At least we thought so, our flight was cancelled due to fog on the ground In West Islip-after we were already checked in.

I did have a claim ticket, however in the mayhem of re-booking our flight, re-claiming our luggage and finding a hotel for both my and my sister's families for the night, I misplaced it. I spent a good amount of time this morning going through all my bags, pockets, etc. again this morning to no avail.

I will call the Beach Club in the morning with this information and hopefully they will locate the tree.

Thanks so much to UrsulasShadow for all the work she did organizing this swap and for the wonderful tree she provided for us. Our tree was missing for a few days (we checked everywhere in the hotel we could think of......even the gift shop) and then it magically appeared in our room. We have no idea where it had been, why it wasn't located when we checked in, but it was such a beautiful little tree when we finally did receive it and it made all the difference to our undecorated room. Just a note for people doing this next year, make sure you exchange both names before going on your trip. UrsulasShadow had our name but I did not think ahead enough to get her name. I felt a little silly when the CSR staff kept asking me the name of the guest who left it for me...ahhh......UrsulasShadow? Kind of funny.....I did PM UrsulasShadow from the resort and got the info but probably would have been smart to do that ahead of time. Although I wonder if it really would have made any difference because our tree arrived with our names clearly written on it.

Thanks again UrsulasShadow.....the Christmas trees really make a difference when you're away from home during the Christmas season.

Well, unfortunately tree swap #3 had some problems, too. I called every day during our stay and the front desk told me there were two trees left but someone had already taken them. So who knows what happened! We still had a wonderful time and I thank you UrsulaShadow for all the hard work you put into this!

Hi Phisigprincess!!! I am DomisDisAunt and the first supplier of the Christmas tree for the Swap 7 this last Christmas! I am soooo glad that they finally found the tree for you and you were able to use it for at least a couple of days! When reading your notes it sounded like you got the tree from the girl that I swapped with and not pyrxtc. I am trying to track it down as I never got it back and I was curious about who you got it from. I know you were going to forward it onto Cinderella Fan, were you able to make the swap. I had written her both before we left and after we returned and I have gotten no response from her. When and where did you meet? How did the swap go? Any details that you can tell me on how to reach her? I have tried to contact her again by e mail but that does not seem like it will be good enough. I was just trying to either recoup it for next year or make sure it was donated to someone before she returned yet, I haven't heard a word! It was a very nice tree and I can't believe someone that got a chance to share in having it would just ignore returning it so that someone else would have a chance to use it next year but no replys are making me wonder!
Thanks for any help you can give me!! I appreciate that you passed it on and kept the swap going! Again, I hope you had a terrific time at WDW!! We sure did and planning again already for Thanksgiving next year!!
