I understand that DVC can't "guarantee" special room requests, but any advice about making non-smoking room reservations. Are those requests on a first come/first served basis? Any experiences not having that request honored? (My mom has a lung disease and I know if we are in a smoking room, she'll be on the first plane home.)

Thanks

Most of the time there is a very good chance of getting a non-smoking room. Especially if you check in earlier in the day. But as you check in much later in the evening, your chances get worse. You could always request non-smoking for medical reasons. Have your mother provide something from her physician if that might help.

Most DVC rooms are classified as non-smoking. The odds are very much in your favor. If you haven't already, call and ask MS to note your non-smoking request on the reservation - ask for it to be noted as a medical request due to your mother's lung disease.

Then (as Deb posted), try to arrive early in the day. Nearly all who get a smoking room (that didn't request one) get stuck in one because that was all that was left when they arrived.

If you happen to get a non-smoking room that a previous occupant used for smoking (very bad, but it happens), ask to be moved. There is not much chance of this, so please don't worry about it.

Best wishes -

Forgot to note that we got a smoking optional room at the BCV once. I was there about 7:30AM to check in while the rest of the family slept at the AKL and this room was available. I couldn't smell any smoke in the room at all. Maybe I was just lucky, but it wasn't a problem for me and I really don't like the smell of stale smoke or any tobacco smoke.

DD has asthma and can't sleep in a smoking room at all. We have always put "non smoking for medical reasons" in our requests and have never gotten a smoking room at WDW.

Funny thing, for our next trip, I was so busy cancelling 2 trips, figuring out deadlines and so forth, I forgot to make a single request. But .. when we got the conformation, "non smoking for medical reasons" was on there. I found out they have it as a permanate resquest.

Thanks for the replies. They were encouraging and the fact that the question didn't provoke any hardluck stories was even more encouraging. It was one of the last questions I had before taking the leap to buy into DVC (signing contract today) and these boards have been great for feedback and for getting a feel for how the club really works. :sunny:
