Wandered across this video of an old Walt Disney World commericial, from the early 70's and just creepy enough to scare any kids that might have wanted to go there. Doesn't help that they used the same narrator used in old horror movie trailers like the Amityville Horror. Check it out.

For comparison, The Amityville Horror (http://www.movie-list.com/a/amityville-horror.html)
Enjoy.

That was a great commercial, better than the touchy-feely junk they come up with these days. :sad2:
BTW, the narrators of the two links are not the same person. The Disney clip was done by Orson Welles, the other clip I can't quite place, but it sounds a lot like Andrew Duggan. :confused3

I sent the link to my DS-16 and he just IM'd me that he noticed it showed characters that don't even walk around anymore. Such an observant boy!

Good ear. I hadn't hear Mr. Welles in many years, since "No wine before it's time..."

Whoa! US Steel OWNED the Contemporary?
WebmasterCricket

I thought that sounded weird too. What other hotel did they build the Poly? Apparently, US Steel doesn't make trees because the landscaping looks like a parking lot.
DancingBear

Yeah, the Poly was the other one built in this manner.
From Mouseplanet:
U.S. Steel had leased the land under the hotels and would own the hotels themselves, while Disney would operate them. Roy O. Disney, who was now overseeing the whole project following his brother Walt's death, informed Donn Tatum (then president and vice chairman of the board of Walt Disney Productions) and Mike Bagnall (from the company treasurer's office, later Chief Financial Officer) that he wanted to buy out U.S. Steel. Tatum, who had conducted the earlier negotiation with U.S. Steel, was not happy about going back to the bargaining table.
Dick Nunis, who was heading up the operational aspect of the park, complained to Roy that the money would be better spent on more capacity for the park. Roy responded, “I'm doing you a favor. We're not going to be very good partners with them.” And so Disney gained control of their hotels, much in a similar fashion to the way that they bought out the leassees at Disneyland over a decade earlier.

Problem was, they were not able to "slide" the units back out when it was time for renovations, because of the warping of both the slide in unit, and the framing that the newly redone units were supposed to fit into. So maybe US Steel did not want to be associated with a concept that did not pan out the way it was planned.

I'm glad US Steel doesn't do commercials anymore, I remember when those industrial giants advertised (stock options?). . .anyone remember the old AlCoa commercials (we can't wait, till tomorrow. . .ALCOA CAN'T WAIT).
It's interesting that the Mad Hatter used to be masked, he's been a face character for years now.

I sure do. For the longest time, I thought they were saying "Our cola can't wait." and was trying to figure out which soft drink they made...

Thanks.
Very Interesting.
I wonder how this stuff makes it to YouTube.
VCRs certainly weren't around in 1971. Did some former ad exec. have a film reel sitting around his house and converted the film to video to put on the net?

What was the first video for anyway? Since I get scared on the smallest things could someone please tell me? Thanks.
EDIT: Never mind I just watched it.

The 1971 commercial seems like it was conceived and directed by someone who took 1 too many hits of acid.

that...is funny. :) maybe that's why Eastern Airlines is long out of biz. the character costumes are so sweet to see, though.
What a trip. Thanks for posting it.
Funny, I was at Disney World during Easter 1972.

We were all excited at the MNSSHP on 10/10, we wandered down a treat trail and there was Mr. Walrus--that was a treat!

Well, I searched several Alice in wonderland character sights, and apparentley, it had no name, as each site just called it "walrus".........

Okay....semi-creeped and semi-reminiscent. We used to fly Eastern to Florida for our trips. I do remember that commercial (slightly) but I don't remember being so creeped out by it as I do now. Oh Well....thanks for posting it.

If I remember correctly, The Walrus and The Carpenter was a parody poem based on some other poem that played the character of "The Walrus" as a political leaders inability or unwillingness to feel guilt or something like that. He was never actualy a character, but a story within a story told by the Tweedles to Alice. His name is never revealed other than "The Walrus".
Of course that was almost 20 years ago and I can barely remember my phone # nowadays so who knows.

This one - well there are no words. LOL! But the song is pretty catchy! And it gives you a great look at the MK before the "new" Tomorrowland, before Aladdin, before the SkyWay was taken down. A snapshot of WDW history.

Technically, not a Disney World commercial, but an Eastern Airlines commercial, just like the one re: the Contemporary is a US Steel commercial. In those days, Disney wasn't such a hardliner about allowing other companies to use their images/characters in commercials.
The US steel clip looks less like an ad and more like the sort of film that might be shown at a shareholder's meeting.
PS: Perhaps the poster who mentioned Eastern's demise meant that their advertising was more off-putting than inviting. Anyone remember the "Wings of Man" campaign? Snore.

Wow - these are incredible. That first one really is disturbing in a very basic way. Advertising history!
It kind of cracks me up at random times through the day that they were singing about how much MORE! there is and they are in what appears to be a barren -post-apocalyptic, empty Magic Kingdom. Also, gotta love the red jacket, white pants look!

I think it was pretty early on, 1972 or '73. :)
