Well we got our documents. I am not sure who can be a notary in Ontario. Does it have to be our lawyer who did our house mortgage.
looking for suggestions thanks :)

Think I must have done something wrong. We just signed and sent it back, that was 6 weeks ago and I've not had a call about it.
Good luck with the purchase, and happy planning!

All lawyers in Ontario are notaries. If you have a lawyer that you've used in the past I expect they will meet with you and notarize any documents you require either for free or for a very nominal fee (ask when you call so there are no surprises.)

I looked online when we did our papers and found a group call Red Seal Notary. You call a central number and they find one close to you and make the appointment for you.
You just show up with the papers and ID, give them your money and they sign your papers.
Easy-peasy!

...not quite true...All lawyers are entitled to be appointed as notaries but it doesn't happen automatically. A certificate of appointment has to be obtained from the Province of Ontario. However, all lawyers in Ontario are commissioners for taking affidavits, which does not help if you need a document notarized.
It appears that some municipalities will help you out for a fee (the link refers to a commissioner of oaths but it looks like they will notarize documents too):

Chances are he or she will be a Notary, and if you have an existing relationship, they may not charge you. Just make sure that when they sign they do so as a Notary (as opposed to indicating they are a Barrister and Solicitor) and that they seal it with their Notary seal.
Congratulations on your purchase!

I was working at a large financial institution at the time of my purchase, and a fellow from legal notarized for me at no charge!
