Free dining and resorts ?

My friends are going with their entire family--grandparents, siblings, and kids in September. There will be 15 of them in all. Was wondering if they booked a place now and free dining came out--could they just add the package to the rooms they already have or would they need to cancel the room to book the package?

If they currently have a room only reservation and switch to a package later, the original reservation will be cancelled and they'll have to rebook. It's not complicated though, I've done it before with no problem.
