Driving vs Flying

Flying is still the safest way to travel. Over 41,000 traffic fatalities per year have been reported over the past few years in the United States. Not to minimize what happened on September 11th but this is a reality.

I was always a nervous flyer, even before 9/11, but I am also a very logical person so that's how I convince myself to get on a plane (plus the fact that it's two hours vs. a twenty-hour drive). With the internet, statistics are readily available. I've research air crashes extensively, even down to know just how many miles it takes before flying becomes statistically safer than driving. Even though Monday's crash has made me even more nervous about our Thanksgiving weekend trip, I am still going. After that, we have nine more Disney cruises booked through the end of 2002, and we already have flight arrangements made for three of them. Don't let the terrorists scare you away from having fun!! No matter how scary it seems, the odds are still with you.

41,000 deaths in cars would be equal to about 165 planes crashing killing 250 people each. Plane crashes are horrific but so are some car crashes. Flying will always be safer.
