View Full Version : How Can We Organise A Bigger Dis Meet

Hi
We had a dis meet recently in London. I had a great time, but I think it would be great if we could organise a bigger a dis meet perhaps bring children a long. What do you think? I am new to organising meets, so in a way it was easier to organise a small meet. This time I thought we could choose a location, date etc and have a few of us to organise the event. Am I too keen :lmao:
Any ideas, locations, volunteers etc please please post here and let me know. More the merrier. I think London maybe a little difficult for some people to come I dont know? Any ideas would be fantastic.

When we had the very first UK DIS meets these included children , and we met up at Lakeside so that we could be indoors in case of bad weather and thought that the size of the food court could easily accommodate us all and we were free to eat and drink or go off to the shops, plus it's motorway location ...........
BUT!!! - on the second or third meet, a jobsworth came along who had decided that we were connected with the shops in some way, and weren't using the rooms provided for meetings!!! LOL! I was nominated (yeah, thanks guys, I haven't forgotten  ) to remonstrate with her - I explained we were merely friends meeting up from various places , and since we all had drinks and snacks and were replenishing these regularly, plus there were loads of empty chairs etc in tyhe food court, we were entitled to be there, so we won the day.
However, she contrinued to lurk in the shadows, watching me with a very suspicious look!
So........ we gravitated to using child-friendly pubs that have restaurants- the organiser would visit the pub and discuss with the landlord/lady if they would be okay with an influx of x number of people on such and such a date - ask if you can book a table or tables in advance, some pubs like you to ask DISers to select from their menus in advance so they know what and how much they need. - this has worked well.
You can also make a weekend of it, so those travelling further can have somewhere to stay. Usually someone has a pub and/or nearby places of interest to children locally.

What about a theme park such as Chessington or American Adventure?

We have attended a few meets now, along the lines of what Shirley has said. Even a weekend one in Exeter and one in Cardiff :teeth:

Following on from the pub suggestion some pubs have those huge play barns in, think they are called Charlie Chalks

Hi
All good ideas. Any locations people would be able to come to.
We live in Rainham, Kent we wont mind driving for upto 2-3 hours as we will stay the weekend. I would imagine the run up to xmas it wont prob happen till Feb/March?

I think location is a very important factor as we are flung all over, so somewhere central would work best probably. I liked the idea of Alton Towers, and come the summer, what about a weekend at the seaside for us all? I bet we could get discount with a hotel for a group rate.
So location, good planning with venues, and most importantly plenty of notice so no one has an excuse of a prior arrangement :teeth:

Wow, maybe DLP is a goer then. Not to step on your toes Michelle, but I have sent an inquiry to Eurostar about a group rate for travel so we'll see what reply I get. Am happy to help as much as poss, this could be great :thumbsup2

I know the hotels - the ones just outside of DLRP do group discounts too! I booked 20 rooms at the Explorers hotel for a work getaway last time and good a really good deal!
If people are up for DLP then we should have a poll on which weekend would be best, and then im happy to contact some hotels and see what sort of rates they can do once we have an idea of people etc.

Hi
Wow sounds great. I dont mind at all Claire I would not of thought of that.
Thanks Laura for offering it will be a great help. So if Claire, Laura and I start finding out some information at the mo I am using one hand so I am slow with everything.
Bruce did say we are off to NY in March and due to prices it would be good idea to look go away say Apr/May? People have time to save up. What do you think? We go on the 14th March and all my holiday entitlement is gone until the 1st April. Weekends are still classed as normal days where I work
Let me know what you think. Honestly Claire dont worry about enquiring its a great help I really appreciate it.
Wahoo DLRP I am so excited.

Personally it would be easier for e and my future hubbie if it is a weekend as he doesnt get much time off work. But if everyone else wants a midweek then im sure i can arrange something.
Just a thought, but if people have exams and things, why dont we try and arrange the trip for afterwards - something to look forward to.

A weekend would be good, from the Friday to the Sunday. I've been looking at hotel prices and to be reasonable we could look at the Movenpick or Explorers to stay on a budget. the other place thats quite good is the hotel in Val de Europe, but if people really want the onsite hotel then thats what we'll do I guess.
Can honestly say I have no plans from march to june so any weekend is fine with me. was going to say avoid easter but it looks like we're doing that anyway.
Will keep in touch about the quote when I get it back, was thinking we might want to put this over on the DLP board as well as I bet there are plenty of peeps over there who know what they're talking about.

this sounds fab and seeing as it looks increasingly likely that florida wont be happening in june this would be a fab little filler....and my friend Sam would probably come too....just a point on the travelling side of things though we dont have cars or anything. Sam can drive but doesn't own a car here and refuses to drive anywhere other than england.
Again without looking too much into it I'm certainly very interested, dates and finances pending....

Its a shame about FL you were really looking forward to it. I think the best option would be to get a train into waterloo the night before and stay around that area and then get the euro star to Paris disneyland.

That would be great Laura. I think we need to know how many are in coming in each party so we can get an idea on how manypeople are coming and to find out what discount we might get.
For us its 2 adults and 3 children
