After many trips to WDW, I'm taking the whole crew back to my roots (I grew up in Huntington Beach.) Myself, DW, and DS's (12,12 and 8) are going to spend 3 or 4 nts. on property. We were there in 2000 (without one DS) and it was smack dab in the middle of the DCA construction. It was fun, but many, many rides were down.
Here's what I need to know:
1. Will many rides be down for the removal of the holiday overlay?
2. Distance wise, which hotel is the best for getting to the parks?
3. What are the usual hours for Jan. 1 through 7? Are the crowds bad?
thanks in advance for all your wisdom

You can check the www.disneyland.com or www.mouseplanet.com sites for most of the answers to your questions.
Here's my best guess based upon past experiences:
1. Haunted Mansion and It's a small world will be down. Although I don't know when exactly they start this disassembly.
2. The answer to this question is dependent upon your budget. Hands down you can't get closer than the Grand Californian. 2nd place goes to the Disneyland Hotel. If your budget is tight then any of the hotels on the Harbor Ave side will do. I don't think that Paradise Pier is any closer than any of those properties.
3. Crowds in January are at a minimum. You will have the park practically to yourself.

Calendar is up for January.
My guess is the first week in January will still be busy. Our school district doesn't go back in session until Jan. 8th. Looks like the park has longer hours that week still.

I called DL and they weren't sure when both HM or SW would be down to remove the overlay, but that it would be in the first two weeks of January. HM would be first, then SW. Everything else should be up, but those are my two favorites! Is there any other good sites to go to for info? :confused3
